Starting point is 00:03:20 What's up? I got my dog, yo Nacho, yo Tig, how you what, man? I'm chilling, bro, I got my Jord it. I'm gonna do it. I'm gonna do it. I'm gonna do it. I'm gonna do it. I'm gonna do it. I'm gonna do it. I'm gonna do it. I'm gonna do it. I'm gonna do it. I'm gonna do it.
Starting point is 00:03:30 I'm gonna do it. I'm gonna do it. I'm gonna do it. I'm gonna do it. I'm gonna do it. I'm gonna do it. I'm gonna do it. I'm gonna do it.
Starting point is 00:03:36 I'm gonna do it. I'm gonna do it. I'm gonna do it. I'm gonna do it. I'm gonna do it. I'm gonna do it. I'm gonna do it. I'm gonna do it.
Starting point is 00:03:43 I'm gonna do it. I'm gonna do it. I'm gonna do it. I'm gonna do it. I'm gonna do it. I'm gonna do it. I'm gonna do it. You know what I mean? Respect to the brand. You crazy, but to my left, the man who actually has the shoe, listen man, champion, champion, champion, one of the coldest to ever do it. Youngest killing the NBA. They never accomplish everything you can do at a young age.
Starting point is 00:03:55 You still got more to build. Man, we got the champion, Jason Tadam in the building. Appreciate you pulling up, big dog. No, I appreciate y'all having me. He finally can say he champ like me. I'm hyped for you, my boy. Ah, there you did do it first, Ray J. I did it first, bro.
Starting point is 00:04:09 You know what I mean? Call him Ray J. Anything but Ray J, boy. Nah, actually, nah. Better than your cousin, Olenno Brown. He Ray J me. Wait, well, he got the champ here, man. I'm hyped, bro, cause this is my bro, man.
Starting point is 00:04:19 He cool. We got a Midwest group chat. We always show love in there, so I'm hyped to have him on the show, bro. Hey man, shout out to the game. Listen, we got lots to talk about with you. We'll talk about the first time y'all met, man. When y'all first linked up in Boston.
Starting point is 00:04:31 You came to save the Celtics, man? I came to save them, man. You know what I mean? The whole history of line. You know what I mean? Thank you, JT. Is that nigga be lying? He had my jersey number first, but I let him keep it.
Starting point is 00:04:43 So I had to go 55. You know, I was originally zero. Did you ask for it? What, 55? No, fuck no. Did you ask for your jersey? Zero. I said, is it available?
Starting point is 00:04:53 No, you did not. I said, is it available? I said, is it available? No, I asked for it. I respected what he did, but I ain't know I was gonna lose my name in the process, but it's all good. The real JT.
Starting point is 00:05:07 Yeah, I lost my number and my name was crazy. I didn't even have no identity out there. That's crazy. So this is my whole identity, bro. That's crazy. It's cool though. Man, that's funny. Listen, now we're gonna start with the orders up B here.
Starting point is 00:05:22 He's super tapped in, you know what I'm saying? With the high school at AAU. He was definitely on one of the coast AAU teams for sure. Yeah, it was at the St. Louis Eagles. Yeah, bro, you gave boys hell back in the day. Back in the day, any memorable matchups you had back then? So I know you led the EYBL in scoring. He was gunning.
Starting point is 00:05:40 26 and I think 10. 26 and 10 light. I think for me, I mean, it's like everybody, we all grew up playing against guys that's in the league now. Like Harry Giles, one of my best friends, we played against each other all the time. We got one of the best AAU games, I feel like, of all time, we played on ESPN semifinals
Starting point is 00:06:03 to go to Peace Jam. And we was down 20 and a half, we came back and my point guard Jordan Barnes, who went to Indiana State, playing overseas, and he had a half court shot at the buzzer. And that was, it was crazy because, you know, HG was number one player in the country, playing against the best team to go to the finals. And I committed to Duke on TV right after that game.
Starting point is 00:06:24 Grant Williams was out there, Johnson Coates was out there. I don't think y'all never talked about that game. It was like five or six pros out there and we was at Peach Jam. CP was on the bench coaching. So that's like one of my favorite AAU games I've ever been a part of.
Starting point is 00:06:40 You gave boys buckets. You gave Miles Bridges 40. Markel Foles 40. Damn, I forgot who the other name was in high school. I think it was your senior year, you went crazy. I mean, I've been all right for a while. I seen a highlight when you and Jalen Brunson was going at it in high school.
Starting point is 00:06:59 So I ain't gonna lie, Jalen Brunson, he gave us 50. We played in West Virginia. Yeah. I was a junior, he gave us 50. We played in West Virginia. I was a junior, he was a senior. And that was one of the times I left and I was like, no, we got cooked. But we ended up winning the game, but it's just cool to look back on those matchups. It's like, man, people think Jalen Brunson
Starting point is 00:07:22 may be a late bloomer, but he like been killin' since. He was in high school. Yeah, even in the USA, like the U-19 team, like he was going crazy. No, he wasn't on my team. He wasn't on your team? What do you think, what year after that? Oh, U-19, yeah, not 2019.
Starting point is 00:07:36 U-19, yeah. He won MVP. Yeah, he was killin'. So he was in, yeah, we tapped in, you see our facts, we get you, we'll straighten you out now. Paul. That was crazy. That was crazy.
Starting point is 00:07:49 He was going crazy. It was like three of us were still in high school. Some was going to college and some had just finished like their freshman year in college. It was cool to have a mix of different guys, but no, JB, he put us on his back and we was in, I think it was in Greece and we won the gold medal. Right killing.
Starting point is 00:08:07 Being from St. Louis and being a star high school player, like why you choose Duke? I know Emil here in Duke, but he was at Duke for 20 years. But why'd you choose Duke? What is that? Dave, I'm gonna call the shot. That's my friend. We're bond, baby.
Starting point is 00:08:23 That's my new big 13, man. My fault, my fault. He my new big three teammate. My fault, my fault. He my new big three teammate. Is that Shiloh? Yeah, he Shiloh. Yeah, I pocket. Respect, Lord.
Starting point is 00:08:34 My fault. He a legend at Duke. For sure. No, Mill, Mill a legend. Shout out to Mill. For sure, man. He was the first. To be honest, man, growing up,
Starting point is 00:08:43 I never thought that I was going to Duke. I just didn't think people where I came from went to Duke. I didn't think that Coach K would come to my crib. I wanted to go to Ohio State. Greg Oden, Mike Conley, having turned to those as my favorite players in college. So I thought that's where I was going. You didn't watch Wake Forest?
Starting point is 00:09:03 Never. Oh God, just making sure. Shut up and see Pito. You a bull fucker. He popped the day. I did watch it a little bit this season. It's all good. And I was just like.
Starting point is 00:09:18 All right, that's what we're gonna do. I'm gonna trade life. Oh, man, y'all are crazy. Obviously, you said high school people were going crazy and ended up going to Duke. What was that transition like, you know what I'm saying? Because obviously, how they talk to people in high school, you get to Duke.
Starting point is 00:09:34 Duke is a place that's like none other tradition. It's very important. You got a Hall of Fame coach and institution that's more than any player. You to come in, like, it's humble to be in that situation. How was that? You know, they always say like when you want to, that's the first big decision you make as a young man. And for me, I
Starting point is 00:09:51 only took one official visit. Like I took one official visit and I got there on like Friday morning by Saturday. I remember I was at the bookstore, my mom like, yo, like we need to start buying hoodies like I'm coming to Duke. Damn, I just felt that the vibe of the team, how they felt about coach and, and how they talked about him and how close they was. I was like, man, I don't want to waste no time. We're going to no other visits. I was like, man, I want to go to Duke.
Starting point is 00:10:16 So that was like one of the best decisions I ever could have made. Um, some of my best friends I ever met from Duke, Shout out to John Shire, that's somebody I talk to every other day still. We always talk about the brotherhood and that's a real thing. Regardless of if you ever played with them or if they was there 25 years before you, it's always love whenever you see anybody that had that uniform.
Starting point is 00:10:42 And I just wanted to be a part of something that was bigger than myself. And knowing that I was only gonna go to college for one year. Damn, you knew that. That's a blessing, boy. Yeah, I did, I knew that. I wanted to be somewhere that was gonna set me up
Starting point is 00:10:58 for the big stage, right? You go to Duke, that's the best, no disrespect to nobody else, but that's the best, one of the best college programs. Right, we always on national TV. The expectations is high, media training, all those things is just preparing you for the next level.
Starting point is 00:11:13 And I was gonna ask like, you know what I'm saying, I know that's lit, but what was that experience like that first time playing in Cameron and Doran? Like what was that first, cause y'all fans crazy as hell. Yeah, so I mean, a lot of people don't know, I got hurt in our second pro day. So we had our second pro day.
Starting point is 00:11:28 I ended up, I had like a little stress fracture in my toe and I missed our first 12 games. I remember that. My first time playing, I think we played like Tennessee State at home and it was no load management, no many restrictions. I played like 22 minutes straight. I caught a cramp.
Starting point is 00:11:49 So my first game was a little up and down, but no, we got the best fans. A lot of people when they come to Duke, they don't understand it like this is the gym. Like it's so small, they won't pass. They think that's where we practice at. It's only like 5,000, 6,000 people in there, but they definitely support and the energy is crazy.
Starting point is 00:12:08 And it's bittersweet. I only got to experience that for one year, but it definitely was a great experience. How was it playing for Coach, I'm about to say Coach K. Mike Sheskey. I'm playing for Cal, my dog. I'm sorry.
Starting point is 00:12:22 You know. Print flow here. Thinking about that money. Family. You know what I mean? head. Thinking about that money. Family. You know what I mean? Shout out to the gang. Now how was that playing for Coach K though, bro? I heard he got in your ass a couple times.
Starting point is 00:12:30 Hey, yo. All right, Jason. He's trying to get... He called him Jason up here. Get out of here, lost my man. He ain't Jason. He Jason up here, yeah. All right.
Starting point is 00:12:43 Playing for Coach K was great. I mean, the thing I respect most about Coach is he's a leader of men and he really understands how to galvanize a team and how to get you to really compete and play hard. And I think that's the biggest thing for kids that's coming out of high school. Everybody is talented, but how can you work well
Starting point is 00:13:03 with a team? How do you learn how to compete? How do you learn how to compete? How do you learn how to get outside yourself, get outside your comfort zone? I think Coach K was great at motivating, and he wanted the best for me. Like he wanted me to be the best for I could be. He wanted me to be one and done.
Starting point is 00:13:18 He wanted me to go be where I'm at. And I think that was important and that was special because you hear a lot of stories of coaches that want to hold guys back, want to keep them. Coach K, he pushes you to be the best version of yourself. And that's something like, Coach K texted me today, even at 77, he still tapped in and we talk all the time. Did he ever troll you just to get you to play better
Starting point is 00:13:43 or did he have his little antics with you? No, he definitely was a master manipulator. I mean, we was playing Virginia, Virginia, we was playing half Virginia. And it was the best game I had in college at the time. I had two points at halftime, but we was winning. I thought I was playing defense. I came at halftime, I'm dapping everybody up.
Starting point is 00:14:06 I'm like, yo, like, you know, just keep it going. We're going to win. Like, keep playing the right way. No lie. I'm sitting next to Mill. Coach K came in. I'm like, I'm leaning forward. I'm like, yo, like, let's go. K-Man took his jacket off and he threw it at me.
Starting point is 00:14:22 He was like, you soft ass St. Louis kid. He said, if I knew you was going to play like this, I would have left you back in St. Louis. Damn. I'm telling you, he cussed me out the whole 12 minutes and like mills, he could tell, I don't get mad. Like, I don't like nobody call me soft and I don't want nobody disrespect where I'm from.
Starting point is 00:14:39 Yeah, that's how I nearly talked to Murphy Lee. Yeah, true. That's his cousin. St. Louis cousin. That's his cousin. That's his cousin. That's his cousin. That's his cousin. That's his cousin. You don't rely on a brother, my cousin.
Starting point is 00:14:51 That's his cousin. That's a hell of a family reunion. I can't believe my kid talking like that. My man, man, finish your story, bro. I just had a flash, man, bro. But I think Coach was just good at like, he knew how to push your buttons. And I scored 28 points in the second half
Starting point is 00:15:06 because I was just angry. And at the time I didn't understand, but after I realized like, he just knew how to coach certain players. He was excellent at that. That's hard. 28 points in the second half. Damn, you didn't get no shots.
Starting point is 00:15:19 He ain't swiggin' the bill for anything. Me ain't getting no shots, bro. It's all good, though. I've been there. I've been there. My man ain't got no mic. He can't hear me. I'm just saying, I've been man, like, no shots, bro. It's all good, though. I've been there. I've been there. Yo, chill, my man ain't got no mic. He can't be feeling it. I'm just saying, I've been there.
Starting point is 00:15:29 I know the feeling, bro. I played on the Celtics, bro. I've been there. Oh, man. Oh, man. Man, hey, it was a different time in my life. All right. For sure, man.
Starting point is 00:15:39 It's funny, you know what I'm saying, the ACC, people regard it as the best conference, basketball. He was in there, you in there? Yeah, yeah. Yeah, you know what I'm saying, salute to you people guard the best conference, basketball, you was in there, you in there? Yeah, yeah. Yeah, you know what I'm saying, salute to you, but I definitely hated you at the time period because I'm a little of a fan and we did not have a chance to get y'all.
Starting point is 00:15:52 One of the worst times of my life during that period because every co-player was going to Duke and we didn't have a chance at all. Nah, nah, Duke is a tough place to play. I mean, I killed, it was a tough place to play though. What you do at Cameron and Dor? Probably like 26. I'm used to using school. Dang, I ain't and Dior? Probably like 26. I'm a year late in school.
Starting point is 00:16:05 Dang. I ain't got one and done. All right, I had two. I had two. I was already. They're talking. That's a question. They don't play.
Starting point is 00:16:14 He trying to be funny. He know I did two years, bro. Trying to be funny. I could have been one and done. What you having this way for is you remember? He ain't getting no buckets. We locked that up. I ain't play good.
Starting point is 00:16:24 Yeah. You know I couldn't. Nah? He ain't get no buckets, we locked that up. I ain't play good. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. You know, we ain't going bro. Yeah, we ain't going. Stupid ass motorcycle. Yeah, Coach K when we played him. Blow the smoke.
Starting point is 00:16:33 We blew the smoke at Coach K, right? And he started coughing before the game. He gonna call in ACC and tell them that we can't do the motorcycle no more. We beat him that game anyway, but I had 26 as a first. Motorcycle on the basketball court. What y'all do? And y'all probably only do that when y'all play Duke.
Starting point is 00:16:50 I had 26 and we beat him. I ain't care. That's the problem. Everybody pull out their best tricks when Duke come to town. That was every game. I'll do that. I was nice, I'll wait for it.
Starting point is 00:17:00 When I got to your team, our leg was gone. I ain't no more bounce, I had none of that. Who was the hardest ACC team you faced against though? Wait for it. Stop. I know he ain't gonna say that. Honestly, North Carolina,
Starting point is 00:17:15 they won the championship that year. Yeah, I just watched. They won a job year too. They won one when I was in school too. They had Joe Berry, Justin Jackson, ACC played a year. Kennedy Meeks, Theo Pinson. We ended up, we played them three times. We went two on one.
Starting point is 00:17:29 And if we ain't get cheated against South Carolina, we would have met them in the championship. Hell of South Carolina. They went to the Final Four. They did, bro. But we was gonna smack y'all. That was out of shape, Glenn Davis built Kennedy Meeks too.
Starting point is 00:17:44 Killer. Oh, you're, Bill Kennedy mix too. Killer. Oh, you're no Carolina fan. Killer. Absolutely. So you like Coach Cal. Right, but I fuck with UNC. I fuck with Coach Cal off the court. We'll talk later.
Starting point is 00:17:55 I did the family business, they just quit snitching. And two different ministries. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Walking through the pot. Don't worry about that. Obviously you said you knew he was gonna be a wonderduh. You know what I'm saying? Season ends.
Starting point is 00:18:06 How was that like knowing it was like, it's time to get paid, like transition to be a pro. Like dream come true. How was that moment? How was that summer? I ain't gonna lie. We lost to South Carolina and I was upset. Like, cause I was fully involved.
Starting point is 00:18:20 Like I was at Duke. I was like, I wanna see this through. I wanted to win the championship. The start of the season wasn't great, but we end up, we won the ACC tournament. We won four games in four days. Nobody had ever done that. So we ended up being a two seed.
Starting point is 00:18:34 So I'm thinking like, yo, we really gonna win the championship. We lost in the second round. And after the game, I was like devastated. I was sick. Did media, I'm in a locker room. And then I remember I got to the crowd and I went to go see my mom and it just clicked.
Starting point is 00:18:51 I was like, damn, my dream about to come true. Damn. And at that moment, it wasn't like I didn't care that we just lost it. It was like, man, this is what I been working towards my whole life. And it was like, I saw my mom. I was like, yo, I'm about to change my mom life.
Starting point is 00:19:04 And at that moment, I wasn't that sad no more. Like I was, I was damn near excited. But I remember I was a little nervous calling Coach K of like, telling him like, yo, I'm not coming back to school. And coach was like, you pick your agent yet? You ready? I was like, damn, coach like, you don't want me to come back? He's like, no, like you gotta go.
Starting point is 00:19:26 That's real. Yeah, that's real for sure. But like I always was gonna leave, but I had just built the connection and relationship at Duke and you know, still tied into this day. And you know, I was just happy to be a part of that program. Starting point is 00:23:16 So listen to Moms Who Puck, a production of iHeart Women's Sports and Deep Blue Sports and Entertainment on the iHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Presented by Capital One, founding partner of iHeart Women's Sports. Hi, this is Alex Kanczewicz.
Starting point is 00:23:32 I'm the host of Big Technology Podcast, a longtime reporter and an on-air contributor to CNBC. And if you're like me, you're trying to figure out how artificial intelligence is changing the business world and our lives. So each week on Big Technology, I bring on key actors from companies building AI tech and outsiders trying to influence it. Asking where this is all going, they come from places like Nvidia, Microsoft, Amazon and plenty more. On Wednesdays, I feature interviews with
Starting point is 00:23:58 top leaders like Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky. Well I'm in the details, let me just say this. I actually stay in the details of the product. And on Fridays, analysts Ron John Roy and I recap the week's news, looking at everything that's happened in the world of AI. That is an emoji red flag for me. I'm putting it up. Three emoji red flags.
Starting point is 00:24:16 They told me they're going to fix Siri. I dreamed. I dreamed. So if you want to be smart with your wallet, your career choices, in meetings with your colleagues, and at dinner parties, listen to Big Technology Podcast on the iHeart Radio app, Apple podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts. No, that's dope, man.
Starting point is 00:24:33 A lot of people don't get that experience where they coach wants you to leave and like telling you pick an agent and stuff. Our coach was nothing like that, bro. He was ready for them niggas to go. Yeah, he was hating on us doing the draft. He was telling two people we was bad teammates, all type of stuff, it was crazy. So that's dope that Coach K did that for y'all, for real.
Starting point is 00:24:52 Yeah, that's love. Listen, we know where you went in the draft, but did you think you was going number one? Mm-mm. You didn't think so? Who went number one in your draft? Markel. Markel. They out the park. And then two was Lazo.
Starting point is 00:25:03 I ain't gonna lie, Markel Fos was cold and college. He was raw. Nah, facts, he was hard to watch. Yeah, you under there. Markel. Markel. And then two was Lonzo. I ain't gonna lie, Markel Fos was cold and college. He was raw. Nah, facts, he was hard to watch. Yeah, he was nice. When I watched him, I was like, yeah, he special. Lonzo was nice, but LaVar Balls, marketing skills, that entire summer. Yeah, that was him.
Starting point is 00:25:16 That was crazy. That should be spoken on more, because I mean, Lonzo was cold, obviously, he was deserving. He was raw. But LaVar, so him so high, for real, he so him so high, going on campaign. Who else parent was on ESop, obviously he was deserving. But LeVar, so him so high, for real, he so him so high, going on campaign, who else parent was on ESPN, bro?
Starting point is 00:25:28 Before they, like he really went crazy for that. He's daddy's gotta do better. I'm glad you ain't go. What they gonna be on SportsCenter, bro? You ain't got no privilege. Yeah, daddy's wasn't involved, like they gotta do better. But it was a blessing not to go to LA for me, for you.
Starting point is 00:25:42 I'm glad you ain't go to LA. I mean, he probably would have been filthy out there anyway, but I think Boston was just perfect. No, I mean, it definitely worked out. But like you said, during that process, the narrative was, it was consensus that Markel was going number one. And when the Lakers got the second pick,
Starting point is 00:25:59 it was like, Lonzo was going too. So it was never a thought in my mind. It was like, I just felt like everybody had their mind made up. Dang. And I was in LA. So Philly had the number one pick at first they came to watch me work out. The Celtics came to watch me work out. I'm sorry, the Celtics had the number one pick at the time they came to watch me in Phoenix. So Phoenix was four. So I work out for all
Starting point is 00:26:23 of them. They come watch me. Everybody was raving about the workout. But then somebody, I ain't gonna say his name, but somebody on the Celtics front office was like, yo, one of the best workouts I've seen. He was like, good luck in your career. But you know, we got the number one pick. We probably not gonna pick you. So at the time I was like, damn.
Starting point is 00:26:40 I don't wanna go down. Damn Brad, you did that. No, it wasn't that. I'm just playing. Let me stop for a minute. I'm sorry, Brad. Hey, good Brad. Come on, bro. Damn, Brad, you did that. No, it wasn't Brad. I'm just playing, let me stop. I'm sorry, Brad. Hey, good Brad, come on, bro. Don't do my guy like that.
Starting point is 00:26:48 Nah, Brad my guy too, I'm sorry, Brad. For me, I grew up a Kobe fan. I always wanted to play for the Lakers. So, for them to have the number two pick, and it was like, they didn't even, it wasn't even a thought that I was gonna get drafted. That was kinda devastating. So, I never worked out for the Lakers.
Starting point is 00:27:05 They never came to watch me work out. And then it was like a week before the draft. Philly and Boston traded the 31-3. And I wanted to go to Phoenix. Phoenix had the fourth pick. Errol Watson was the coach. I went out there. I was looking at houses.
Starting point is 00:27:21 The weather was nice. They had a young team. I was like, man, I'm gonna go get the play. And then I remember Coach K was like, yo, Boston wouldn't have you for a second workout. You should go. I'm like, coach, they just came off the Eastern Conference Finals.
Starting point is 00:27:34 They got a veteran team. I'm probably not gonna play. I don't wanna go. And he was raving about Brad Stevens. He was like, Brad's one of the best coaches in the league. Just go for another workout. And I remember I went up to Boston like three days before the draft.
Starting point is 00:27:48 I had another workout. And I didn't know where I was getting drafted until they called my name. But you know, the rest was history and it all worked out. For sure. That's crazy. Cause I know from the outside looking in, like you said, we fell for some of the propaganda
Starting point is 00:28:01 from the Bob-Obs. We didn't know it was sold up like that. So to hear you say like the Lakers was that locked in, that's crazy. Yeah, I was sick too, because I was like, man, I was so close to my dream and I might play for the Lakers. It was like best case scenario.
Starting point is 00:28:15 And they was, they mind was made up. They didn't want to come watch me work out or had me come in. I was like, man. So you didn't think he was going to play at all in Boston? And then I get drafted, Gordon Hayward signed with the Celtics. I called my agent like, yo, I gotta get traded.
Starting point is 00:28:32 Yeah, facts. I'm in summer league before I ever play a game like, yo, he like relaxed, just waited out. Yeah, man, he doing too much. Basically he's like, you gotta chill. I'm like, yo, I'm trying to play. I don't, I didn't get drafted to come off the bench and not start.
Starting point is 00:28:47 He was like, yo, just like, you in a great organization. They gonna teach you how to play the right way. I ain't gonna lie, I would have been worried too. I mean, JB. I was gonna talk about Bryce Young. Yeah. Grab the headset, JT. They picked up Jordan, and then JB just got drafted
Starting point is 00:29:05 the year before. And JB didn't even play that much this year. Yeah, he didn't. They picked up Jordan and then JB just got drafted the year before. And JB didn't even play that much this first year. Yeah, he didn't. So I would have been concerned too, I ain't gonna lie. So at first I'm like, this was before Kai even came. But then when Kai came it was cool because we traded a lot of people for Kai, I ain't gonna lie.
Starting point is 00:29:19 But y'all went in the mouse. Yeah, y'all got real moves. That was a hell of a trade. Yeah, you had one that like, you had, I'll rock with you purely off the skill, but I think what's so crazy about you is like, you accomplished so much in a short little time that people like want to downplay it.
Starting point is 00:29:33 It's just like, it's not his fault that he came in the league killing. A lot of people take adjustment periods. You was on a veteran team, with a lot of people trying to get contracts, but a lot of people try to prove themselves and still flourish. Like I had a crazy,
Starting point is 00:29:45 I'm working here, y'all went crazy, man. Yeah. That was, at that time, that was like the most fun I ever had playing basketball. Like we lost our first two games and Gordon got hurt on opening night, which was, that was like tragic. Yeah, unfortunately.
Starting point is 00:29:59 I mean, we lost to Cleveland, played back to back. We lost to Milwaukee. I was like, damn, this is gonna be a tough year. But we won 16 games straight. And that's when I was like, Kyrie might be the best basketball player I've ever seen. My favorite player ever. Kyrie won the college basketball.
Starting point is 00:30:12 Kyrie is so cool. Then he got hurt. And we had like 23 games left. And I remember it was me, Smart, T-Row, Marcus Morris, Bangs, Al. And we was already the two seed. And we had 23 games to like play, like learn how to play with each other.
Starting point is 00:30:29 And then we got to the playoffs and it was like, man, we was just like everybody favorite team because we was all young. Nobody expected us to beat Giannis in the Bucks. Then we beat Joel. Then we played Bron in the Conference Finals. We was rolling, I ain't go a lot. We was just out there like having a ball.
Starting point is 00:30:45 For sure. I gotta ask man, how was it going to send LeBron to tweet to follow you back to Duncan on him in the playoffs? Like that's a hell of a transition. No, it was definitely a full circle moment. And I remember like when we beat, we beat Philly and they had swept Toronto.
Starting point is 00:31:03 That's when the tweets started going viral. I made that tweet in eighth grade, like when I first got on Twitter. Yeah, we know, we see the times there, but it's just funny as hell. It was like 2012 or something like that. He was a fan. Ugh.
Starting point is 00:31:15 Oh, that was never a tweet. Did he take a picture with Brian? Yeah, he took a picture. He was a kid. Oh my God. He was 12. He he take a picture with Brian? Yeah, but when I took the picture. He was a king. I was like, Brian. He was 12. He did, he did take a picture. I think it was already 6'3".
Starting point is 00:31:30 Then Brian held him on top of his head. Yeah. You on Dex King. I was like, nah, when I took that picture. You on Dex King was crazy. So, clip that, Luis. All right. I was a king.
Starting point is 00:31:46 Nah, that's funny. That's funny. No, I want you to speak on though for real. I wanna, I love bro Terry Rozier game bro. T-Raw, the legend. I was there playing with him man, that little stint that y'all had bro. Bro, so T-Know like in the, right before the season, before training camp,
Starting point is 00:32:03 guys start coming in like two, three weeks before. And the younger guys, I was in there like a month and we was having like open runs. And I remember the first time I called back home and I called back and said, yo, Terry Rozier is like that. And you know, when you're younger, you think the guys that come off the bench are not starting.
Starting point is 00:32:22 You think they just bums or average. Man, when I seen T-Roy in that first pickup game, I was like, nah, Terry really got game. Nah, he called me. And for 95% of the league, you gotta be in the right spot and have an opportunity. It's only a handful of guys that can go on any team and be who they are.
Starting point is 00:32:42 And that don't mean that the other guy's not that good, it's just those 5% of players are really that good. So, you know, obviously you don't never wanna see somebody get hurt, but it was a blessing in disguise for Kyrie to get hurt. T-Roy got the show, you know, leaving the team and being the starting point guard and, you know, do all those things. But I remember like it was September or whatever.
Starting point is 00:33:04 I called back home, I was like, yo, T-Roy is cold. You was killing, bro, but I feel like he was y'all leader, bro. He was y'all dog. And that run that was on, he was going crazy. JT was in the cut, you feel me? He was doing your thing. He was nigga at the front, what's happening?
Starting point is 00:33:19 When he tried to dunk on Braun, that's when it got crazy. Yeah. That was in our last game. Yeah, I was like, yeah, he ready to go home. You know, he done enough. I'm just trying to shit down. But the movement was crazy. It was a scary and scary
Starting point is 00:33:30 because our boy act like, Eric Busser didn't act like he know who he was, bro. Then it got smoky. That snatch back. Oh. Clippy Lewis. It was crap. Then they had Busser at the game.
Starting point is 00:33:41 I said, they out of pocket. Y'all was hard for that. I rock with it. You know what? I love Boston fans. Even though when you. So at the game, I said they out of pocket. Y'all was hard for that. I rock with you. You know what, I love Boston fans. Even though when I played there it was COVID, we didn't have a fan in the stand. That's why I wasn't hooping like that. We ain't no fans.
Starting point is 00:33:54 I'm a performer. Like I need a crowd. They had fake crowd noise. The stands weren't even out. The stands weren't even out. You couldn't hoop a coppola? Nah, I ain't no hooper. Like I don't. That's what the problem was.
Starting point is 00:34:05 Yeah, I ain't no practice player, bro. I need a real show, bro. I was like, hey, you turned me. Yeah, it was fake crowd noise. Niggas and babas there. Yeah, I'm waving at JT Mama. She's the only one in the crowd. Put my son in the game.
Starting point is 00:34:20 Lil' Deuce running on the court. They ain't got no security. He just running on the court. I'm like, hey, JJ, get your song, man. I'm almost tripped over his shit. No, Deuce do it. He do it every year. He won.
Starting point is 00:34:31 No, that's fine. Yeah, I was with no friends. That's fine. We really was cheering for each other. Like, yeah, what the who, boy? I'm like, I have my best game. We on national TV. Didn't even feel like it.
Starting point is 00:34:42 I tell people, that was the hardest. That's gotta be like the toughest NBA season the whole time. That was terrible, bro. That's why I ain't get out no fans. You gotta do it, the nose swab every morning. Terrible. Like you just didn't know who was gonna play.
Starting point is 00:34:54 Man, that was terrible. You had to sit and wait 30 minutes before you could go on the gym. We all just up there texting like, I'm like, yeah, this is all for me. And that's crazy that y'all say that because I hear all the players say like, that was a trying time, but it's like everybody else
Starting point is 00:35:08 in the media be like, that Lakers really don't count because it was COVID. I'm like, the niggas who was playing said that was really hard to find for us to deal with. Y'all, going over their advice over y'alls. That was tough, that was tough, bro. I don't know about them, for me it was tough. No, it was, it was weird.
Starting point is 00:35:20 I played into the crowd. Especially being on the road. I want to apologize to Boston because that wasn't my best performance. There wasn't no fans there. But you was ready though. I mean, we don't want to talk about your Michael Irvin story but you was ready to play.
Starting point is 00:35:34 I mean, stop, bro. I wasn't, I wasn't. I wasn't doing Michael Irvin. I wasn't, I was just cleaning my nose a lot. I ain't want coke. Chill, you know. He's out of pocket, bro. Let's move over, man. He always play of pocket, bro. Let's move over, man.
Starting point is 00:35:47 He always play too much, bro. For sure. A lot of cops are gonna beat you up. Hey, look at him. Hey, he need your help, bro. You don't have to stall him out, bro. What? You said you gonna, how you rank a fake split?
Starting point is 00:35:59 Listen, see, nigga, you didn't come on here to do this, but fuck it, we here. That was loud. Everybody just sees the clips and fuck them. Really, I don't give a fuck. Honestly, excuse my language, nigga, but since you wanna break it up, I said a real karate black belt.
Starting point is 00:36:17 He agreed, he is a wrestling group. No, I did not agree. He jumps off the ropes at the house. He's the biggest wrestling fan in the world. He jumped off the ropes. Yes, bro. We the biggest wrestling fan in the world. He jump off the ropes. Yes, bro. Why you add into this, bro? See, I'll be leaving stuff alone.
Starting point is 00:36:30 He'll be all right. But I'm saying a real karate black belt is somebody who just plays in WWE. Like not saying the top wrestlers or nothing, but like the nigga, they probably had LeVar Ball out there. So it's like eight niggas built like LeVar Ball that a wrestler would get paid for. So a motherfucking real karate-erl type nigga
Starting point is 00:36:48 with a black belt will beat the shit out of one of them, bro. I don't care, bro. So it's a G League wrestler you saying? Yeah, back to Jason, man. I'm not worried about him. Oh, now you wanna run for the smoke. Now you're gonna ask them questions. I'm not worried about him, man.
Starting point is 00:37:01 We not worried. We not gonna disrespect where I'm about to be performing next. Hit is crazy. I almost signed a deal with them, so. But the answer, the answer right there, WWE. He thirsty for a one piece. Then AEW called me too.
Starting point is 00:37:16 Well, bro, stop laughing at him, bro. I tell you, you know how you laughing at the lunch table. Person laugh, get it next, bro. Pause. Don't do that. Movie on. Let's keep working from this topic. All right, cool. All right, man, shoes is crazy. What was that feeling like, you know what I'm just telling you, what person last getting nicks, bro. For real. Don't do that. Moving on. Keep watching from this topic. All right, cool.
Starting point is 00:37:26 All right, man. Shoes is crazy. What was that feeling like, you know what I'm saying? Knowing that you was going to be a signature athlete getting your own shoe, man? Yeah, that's hard. No, it was dope. I mean, for me, I don't take anything for granted.
Starting point is 00:37:39 I'm still young enough where I remember the days of playing 2K with my cousin, like, yo, I'm gonna be on the cover one day, or going to Full Locker like man, somebody gonna buy my shoes one day, or getting a jersey for Christmas like man, somebody gonna get my jersey for Christmas. So it's like, it's still a wild moment.
Starting point is 00:37:55 Like when we go on the road and kids on the sideline, the kids in the crowd holding up my shoes like, three years in, it's my third shoe, and it's still like man, like all the guys in the league, all the shoes like three years in, it's my third shoe and it's still like, man, like all the guys in the league, all the shoes you could have went to go buy and it's like, man, you went to go buy mine. It's like, that shit is still dope to me even to this day.
Starting point is 00:38:14 For sure. How's the design process like to be hands-on with something like you said, you get to see out in the world. And the second side of that question is, how do you feel about people playing against you in your shoes? So that's it. So the first part is an 18 month process. So like, the threes is out, the fours
Starting point is 00:38:30 is done, we working on the fives. So it's like, it's a long process because you like, you want to enjoy what you're wearing now, but you want meetings about when the fours is coming out and they like, all right, well, we need to start designing the fives. So it's tough to kind of stay in the moment because you like, man, I just want to focus on what's going on right now. But shout out to everybody on the team, team Tatum and Jordan Brand.
Starting point is 00:38:55 They work very hard. We always on calls together. And it's just dope to see all the work that go behind and how long it took. And it's like, when you finally see the final product, when you get to see all the colorways and tell stories organically and people that, you know, can relate to whatever you're trying to tell,
Starting point is 00:39:14 it's dope. And for me, you know, seeing guys wear my shoes, whether they college or the women's team in college or the WNBA players, we just played Detroit like two games ago. And shout out to Tim Hardaway. Tim Hardaway been wearing my shoes like a year and a half now.
Starting point is 00:39:32 But I always notice whenever I play Tim, you know, I never wear him. But we always joke and laugh about it. So he ain't wearing what we play him the other day. Then they went to Miami and he had them on. But I get it like, man, being a competitor, you try and compete against somebody, like you don't wanna have a sneaks on.
Starting point is 00:39:49 You know, I totally understand that, but shout out to all the guys in the league that wear the Tatum 3s or 2s or whatever. And I really do appreciate it. Them 3s is raw, bro. Yeah, they fire. You think you're gonna have like a Tatum team with like guys who wear like you can,
Starting point is 00:40:06 I mean, what Steph just do, he signed De'Aaron. Tatum soldiers. Yeah, wherever you want to call them. Tatum soldiers is crazy. LeBron soldiers. I'm about to try to be a LeBron soldier. He ain't about to sign me up. He wants you to be a soldier.
Starting point is 00:40:20 I was about to get LeBron. Even if I tried to get D-Rose to start with too, but it didn't work out. So give me extra 100 grand, I'll wear them D-Rose a big star one too, but it didn't work out. So give me extra 100 grand, I'll wear them D-Rose. But shout out to Anthony, man. Give my boy a ticket shoot, man. That'd be dope. If we keep building the business
Starting point is 00:40:34 and we get to a point down the road, 10 years from now when I'm one of the older guys, anything can happen. That's all right. That's fire. I gotta ask, what's that excitement? Like, what was like a better feeling? I know you very grateful,
Starting point is 00:40:47 but being on 2K or getting your own shoes? That's two fire ass accomplishments. But to be on the cover of 2K, bro, is crazy. Ooh, that's a good question. I ain't gonna lie, I bought that 2K. Can't believe I bought it. Support Blackleaf, man. Not like that, I'm not saying like that.
Starting point is 00:41:02 I ain't bought 2K in a long time. I usually get it delivered. Support Blackleaf. Hey, definitely. Rich are all here. I appreciate it, bro. You could have sent me one, bro. Say what I'm saying, bro.
Starting point is 00:41:11 This is supposed to be your guy. Was this your vet? He got his shoes. Kind of sent me shoes, bro. That's crazy. I got some JT2. I ain't never get no JT1s. I'ma keep it up there.
Starting point is 00:41:19 You got some twos? I got some twos. I got some twos. I got some twos. I got some twos. I got some twos. I got some twos. I got some twos. I got some twos. I got some JT2, I ain't never get no JT1s. I'ma keep it up there. You got some twos?
Starting point is 00:41:29 I got some twos. You got some twos. They're great. Yeah, did you send them some threes? Did I send the threes? They on the way. Oh, okay. They on the way.
Starting point is 00:41:36 They on the way, nevermind. I'm a Jordan athlete again. Okay. I got the Jordan athlete now. Threes on the way. What do you use your platform for, kid? So you gotta start bullying people. I think the moment when I found out I was on 2K
Starting point is 00:41:49 was more special just because it was my birthday. And it was on the Netflix thing I did with Starting Five, Deuce, he surprised me. And at that moment, like I kind of got emotional. Like I teared up a little bit, just because it was like, man, it's my son sharing this moment with me. It's just something I always dreamed of. It was like being on a cover of 2K is like legendary
Starting point is 00:42:10 and happy on shoe is as well. But man, 2K 25 is like, like everybody played 2K. On God they do. I just wish they wouldn't have did your game like they did it. Like when you was on the cover cause nigga can't make a shot for shit.
Starting point is 00:42:26 I ain't hit a shot. Nah, I'm raw now. Oh, get it Twizzler. I'm talking about, you talking about his game, I'm the game. Nah, nah, nah, he raw on 2K. Oh, okay. They made him.
Starting point is 00:42:34 He's doing shots? I went, I thought. I'm talking about the game play, like when you create a player and you go on the rec and stuff, like can't nobody make a shot but me. My nephew sells me. My best friends sell me.
Starting point is 00:42:49 I got a carry but my back is getting heavy. People complain about the game play. I try to text JT and tell him, tell Ron he didn't get this fixed. He didn't respond but it's cool. Anyway, that's how far. You ain't never texted me. I ain't texted you.
Starting point is 00:43:02 Okay, okay, you right, my fault. They was nervous today. I ain't gonna lie, they was nervous today. He was nervous. I said he's not looking. You should have played for the Bershavia 2K squad is out of the box. Yeah, they, we gotta get better, bro.
Starting point is 00:43:13 He was nervous? He was nervous, Mike was nervous. He thought you wasn't gonna come, I said, damn, he just got here. I'm like, no, he just ate. You said you didn't text me back. Cause you like, what's up? I'm like, he ain't text me back yet.
Starting point is 00:43:25 We been switching, Jeff said. We been switching. We been switching, this is crazy. What are we doing? I put the ER on it. I put the ER on it, that's real funny. Mike tired us out. That's freaky Mike.
Starting point is 00:43:39 We ain't gonna tell you his backstory. Yeah, Tia, you never can. I always come through, bro. Nah, you do, bro. You always been south. That's the one thing I wanted to say. Like when it comes to fans and stuff, like you, D-Rose, and a couple of teammates that I had,
Starting point is 00:43:52 y'all always been great with fans. I was never good with fans. Like I ignore a kid in a heartbeat. You was good, bro. No, I'm not saying like that. Like they'd be like, T, T, I hear them. And I just go back there. I get to the end.
Starting point is 00:44:05 You don't ignore anybody. And that's what make you you. You're a star, that's why you got a shoe. That's why you can be sold on a 2K cover. Cause you treat everybody with respect. I wasn't disrespecting. I just didn't feel like Son of that day. That boy love Cleveland.
Starting point is 00:44:17 But, pause, that's crazy. But listen. Nah, he great at that though. And I used to see that when we was in Boston. And like, even like when you had a little Mikey in here, man, the sign of Jersey and see how excited he was about that. I'm like, man, he really got it.
Starting point is 00:44:32 You know what I mean? You got that, bro. When did you start that though? Like when did you like become like, damn, I'm on low key famous. Was it high school? Was it when you walked on campus at Duke? Like when did you start embracing that moment?
Starting point is 00:44:44 I mean, it's a progression. Like when I was in high school, I got to a certain point, that's when social media took off. I would come out the locker room, I was signing three, 400 autographs at the early game. In high school? Yeah. Oh, they on eBay right now, waiting to cash in.
Starting point is 00:44:59 That support is crazy. You and Sexy Red, boy, St. Louis get behind y'all. Hey. Oh! Shout out to Imo's. Emo's, yo. Oh, Emo's in the wrong pocket. No disrespect. No shit, chill.
Starting point is 00:45:11 My fault, guy. I know you can't say Charlamagne no more, but the Chinese food out there prior to the shout out to the fried rice. I'm tapping in. I'm tapping in. Oh, get him sexy. Lil' Pimp Rollies was crazy. I was arguing about Nelly and somebody bro.
Starting point is 00:45:47 He was really hot at me. Who else I was better than Nelly bro? He was really bad. T-Bro, T the type of guy he would just say, he'd come in the locker room and just say some wild shit just to like get a reaction out of you. Yeah. Say, yo, he used to say like, and I love James Harden.
Starting point is 00:46:04 He used to be like James Harden better than Kobe. Don't do that, don't do that, don't do that, no, no, no, no. Now we hear it. Oh, yeah. I used to say no. He know Kobe was my favorite player, he used to say anybody was better than Kobe.
Starting point is 00:46:12 See, you can't do that. I done got in trouble about this. So he used to just trigger you. Who was who, you say was better than Nelly. I can't, bro, I just said somebody, wow, he was hot. He was like, what? That's the first time I ever got him rattled. Is that all who you used to listen to though?
Starting point is 00:46:26 Growing up, was you warming up to he was not warming up to you. So take off. Shaman eyes crazy. Hey yo. What the fuck. Yo, what up? Oh man.
Starting point is 00:46:42 People are trying to go ADN, go ahead. Y'all got, go Indiana. Go ahead. Y'all got Michael Jackson. I know, y'all got Michael Jackson. Who the best rapper from Indiana? Shout out Freddie Gibbs. Yeah, he from the G. I guess.
Starting point is 00:46:57 No, I ain't disrespecting him. I'm just saying he not from our city. He from Gary. Yeah, we speak home. He don't chatty. No'm just saying he not from our cities or whatever. He ain't from that, he from Gary. Yeah, we should be calling him M. Shetty. Gary ain't the best rapper from Indiana. Oh, okay. All right. Y'all got Sexy, Nelly,
Starting point is 00:47:14 Chinkster. Chinkster's crazy. Chinkster? Yeah. What's that nigga? Y'all all used to listen to Chinky and... What's that nigga? Nah, we ain't played Chinkie.
Starting point is 00:47:25 Yeah, J. Quan. J. Quan? Yeah. He getting paid right now from that country dude using his song. Ah, yup. Shaboos or something like that. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:47:34 So y'all had some shit, bro. Y'all had some more p'tix. I'm wearing for us cause of Nelly. So yeah, that's a big statement. Nah, I think, I thought Nelly was raw back in the day. But there's people better than, that got better music than Nelly. So if you get tied about that, it's crazy.
Starting point is 00:47:47 No, it's a handful of people. JT, stop. We ain't gonna do that. I mean, he did go dining. I said it's a handful of people. He did go dining. JT's favorite rapper is the Jay-Z, though. That's how me and him got cool.
Starting point is 00:47:58 I'm like, damn, you listen to Jay-Z, bro. You like it. The great thing about T, he came to the team, and this was during the COVID season. So the season started late, you like, yeah. The great thing about T, he came to the team and this was during the COVID season. So the season started late, like November, December. Our first game was on Christmas. He didn't talk for the first like three weeks.
Starting point is 00:48:15 He ain't say nothing. He gotta test people out, bro. Dark times, bro. And then one day this nigga did not shut up. He ain't talk for like three weeks. I was like, man, something wrong with it. And then one day this nigga did not shut up. Like he ain't talked for like three weeks. I was like, man, something wrong with it. And he's like, he different. And then after that, he just from the day he got traded,
Starting point is 00:48:33 but to the day he got traded, he talked every day. Wow. What's going on, everybody? Man, that's how it became cool. Do you remember that moment? I do. I remember because I was like, man, they think I'm weird. They don't know I really was. They didn't think he was weird. I'm really roasting y'all in my head,
Starting point is 00:53:08 but I really being cool. You know what I mean? I was like, man, I said something to him. And we started shooting together and I was beating him and shooting every time. Yeah, can we get on that story? Cause Evan Turner said he whooped your ass one day in practice and that's a one v one.
Starting point is 00:53:21 I mean, that's probably the reason. Like I don't address a lot of things. People say a lot of things on the internet and on TV about me and it's a one v one. I mean that's probably the reason, like I don't address a lot of things. People say a lot of things on the internet, on the TV about me and it's cool, everybody got a job. But I like y'all platform, this podcast. And I feel like I had to come up here and address some things, I had ET, we in the crew message. And sometimes you just can't let people get away with lying.
Starting point is 00:53:41 Who lying? And then get on the camera and just start lying. Call ET out there and stress the allegations. I know he wasn't talking about me. He said he used to do dog walking. This was ET first year coaching. He still wanted to hoop. So, T wasn't, I ain't gonna say he wasn't playing, but like.
Starting point is 00:54:00 I was starting at first, no, I was six man. Yeah, he was coming off the bench. Okay. He was coming off the bench. Okay. He was coming off the bench. See, he came in as Jett. Don't do that. But T, like he got this demeanor like he don't, he just real nausea a lot, like everything he just.
Starting point is 00:54:20 No, that's facts bro. He be in practice shoes, kind of like barely tied. But after practice he would wanna play one on one. He being practice shoes, kind of like barely tied. But after practice, he would want to play one on one. He wanted, we would always shoot after practice. And me, him and ET would play one on one. Damn it, like every day. Yeah. And he would win some spots.
Starting point is 00:54:35 Like if we played a lot of spots. Yeah, yeah, yeah. He's 6'10", I'm 5'9". Yeah. Posted him up. He was, that's crazy. That's crazy as well. He was scoring on ET.
Starting point is 00:54:50 Oh! Damn. I was scoring on YouTube, bro. And some of those spots. He just kicked that shit. He lying, bro. Say y'all are supposed to get an ET and a full line. Don't do my dog like that, bro.
Starting point is 00:55:01 Oh, we not gonna let you do ET. Tell the truth, J. He's lying now, bro. ET used to lock him up sometimes. See, that's what we talk about. ET was trying to get him. 10 days. 10 days.
Starting point is 00:55:11 I was like, he was trying to go back, bro. We never was thinking about it. I was like, niggas get, hey, some people get COVID, man. You like, COVID get COVID? For real, bro? I was like, hey, bro, get COVID. Yo, some days, ET was like, he was trying to come back and hoop. Man, I was like was like, bro, get COVID, man. You might have to suit up, bro. We was playing with King of the Court that day at home.
Starting point is 00:55:29 I had tween cross ET. I go to lay the ball up, no lie. That shit grabbed me out the air. He's flying hard, bro. Brad Stevens walking the baseline, like for a split second, ET lost his mind. Like he almost got fired. Like he grabbed me out the air,
Starting point is 00:55:44 not like the foul, just like the, his mind. Like he almost got fired. Like he grabbed me out the air, not like the foul me, just like the, so I wouldn't get the layup. And Brad, Brad non-confrontation at all. Brad just looked at him like, what are you doing? That's when I knew it was time for me to stop playing. He said, he tripped on me or some shit. He ain't got much room around here.
Starting point is 00:56:05 He thought he was in the joint. No, he's like the thing I couldn't believe it, like you know, most of the star players, they get their shots up, then they gonna go about their business. He'll be looking for you like, oh, we ain't playing today. I'm like, and he different.
Starting point is 00:56:21 He ain't, we in the gym for another two hours. Well, we would play one on one every day. And I'm like, yo, he different. Like he wanna be the gym for another two hours. We would play one on one every day. I'm like, he different. Like he wanna be in here for another two hours. I really don't even wanna be in here. But I'm gonna play against him. That's cause I like T wouldn't, he didn't really wanna be at practice.
Starting point is 00:56:37 So I'm like, damn bro. I'm a coach bro, don't say that. Tell your truth. Just talk to the kids. Don't say that. Cause that was fucking third good. Just talk to the kids. Don't say that. Cause that, that was fuckin' third good wash in the gym, damn. Motherfucker may not be submitted in practice.
Starting point is 00:56:49 Motherfucker, motherfucker runnin' all day. Fuckin' with Coach T. But I'm gonna say, he like this, like, a lot of people don't necessarily wanna go through the practice schedule, but if they wanna compete, if you wanna go through workout or shootin' drills or play one on one after practice, like everybody want to compete.
Starting point is 00:57:06 So that was our thing after practice. We would always play one on one, me, him and ET after practice. Do you give them a little credit though, him and ET for sharpening your skills a little bit? Just a little bit. I'm trying to get it when you show them a little love. The ET teach you a motherfuckin' drill,
Starting point is 00:57:25 nigga, that you use in the catch? Teach you a drill, right? The funny thing about ET, he would tell, like, ET was assistant coaches at this point. For sure. ET was like, when am I gonna teach Jason Taylor? What am I gonna teach him? He better than me.
Starting point is 00:57:41 I'm like, good point, ET. We talked about that too, though. ET was the wildest, funniest coach I ever had. Dope. And not even trying to be funny. We was playing in Milwaukee. And I think at half, I had to be like three for 10. I missed like four or five threes.
Starting point is 00:57:58 So I missed my last three. We walking off. And he just so, it's like, he got an innocence about it. He run up to me. He like, yo, you know you can make some of them, right? That's ET. Like I know what he trying to say
Starting point is 00:58:15 about how he conveyed the messages. It's so crazy, cause like, how do I even respond to this in the moment? You just look at it. You know you laugh, bro. Like, yeah, I'm trying to, bro. I'm trying. That was know you laugh, bro. Like, yeah, I'm trying to, bro. I'm trying.
Starting point is 00:58:27 That was a good time, bro. Me and ET and Sola Salah just talked the whole game. He like, look at JT, man. He want the ball, man. Look, he pissed. Look, look, look, he start laughing. I'll be on their lap. Oh, I give him the ball, man.
Starting point is 00:58:41 Like a drunk uncle. I give him the ball, man. Give that boy the ball, man. Call for a nephew. Give him the ball, man. Like a drunk uncle. Get the ball, man. Get that boy the ball, man. Sit back. Call for it, nephew. Get the ball, man. Kim, will you sit him over? Get the ball, man.
Starting point is 00:58:49 That was a fun year. I give Tee credit though. I wanted a D-Row with autographed jersey and I didn't know that they was cool. I didn't know that they knew each other from way back. And Tee made sure I got an autograph Detroit piston D-Rose jersey. Yeah, I was like, man, go up to him, bro. I went up to him, he looking like, he want Mark. I'm like, yeah, I need one too.
Starting point is 00:59:14 Somebody throw Mark. I damn near was like nervous to go up to him. That's D-Rose. That's what made me like, kind of get like drawn to you Puzz. But it's like, you was so cool. Like I'm like, man, he a star. Like he a superstar, but he'll be like, I were so cool. Like I'm like, man, he a star, like he a superstar, but he'll be like, I remember you bro, like.
Starting point is 00:59:28 And he'll show you love, like he ain't giving me no love right now. It's cool, but he'd be like, nah, you remember you and Atlanta. I'm like, you ain't supposed to take his ass. I don't speak to him, you know what I'm saying? Right on bro, you know what I'm saying? And ET, ET like that too.
Starting point is 00:59:43 ET give you a lot of love. And I was like, dang. So when I seen him start working together, ET was like, man, he like a little bro, bro. But he cold. Only person he would ever say something else to get under his skin would be Luca, bro. Anytime we mentioned Luca,
Starting point is 00:59:57 even though it definitely ain't no beef with them or nothing. It's just competitive spirit. But ET would be like, yeah, Luca cold. I'd be like, ooh, JT about to get 40 tonight. He about to go crazy. I was like, say it again, ET. Before the game, we about to play, somebody be like, talk about Luca.
Starting point is 01:00:12 ET would be like, my favorite player is Luca. ET would be like, JT would be like, why? I'd be like, he cold, though. You know what I mean? I'm like, he is cold though. I knew he was gonna get at least a 32 point performance. We on the bench, we just wanna see somebody kill. I see, motherfuckers knew how to trigger him though.
Starting point is 01:00:31 Yeah, I do now. To get him going. I'll text him now. Whew. I couldn't say nothing to first game this year. You went crazy. I ain't wanna get no love though. I was just like, I ain't wanna get no love.
Starting point is 01:00:42 I ain't wanna get no love. Send that nigga thumbs up. Yeah, I was like, wait a whoop, wait a whoop. Pass of aggression. But I was just like, I didn't wanna get no love. I didn't wanna get no love. Yeah, I was like, way to hoop, way to hoop. But he was killing, bro. He was killing. This shit been good so far for sure. Listen, man, we definitely wanna talk about the ring. I had last year to get the ring,
Starting point is 01:00:53 but I wanna ask, you know what I'm saying? Planting gets the worst in 22, coming up a little bit short, but how was that experience, you know what I'm saying, motivated you to be ready to get that chip last year? I mean, certain things that you go through in real time that you don't understand, like how this is going to prepare you for the future. Cause losing at 22 was like devastating.
Starting point is 01:01:11 Like we was at 11th seed, we ended up getting to the two seed, we beat Katie and Kyrie. Please be honest, the defending champs. We go to Miami and winning game seven. Like that was one of the toughest runs I can remember in recent years. And then the fallout short, it was like, man, we just did all of that for nothing.
Starting point is 01:01:29 It was devastating. And then the next year we kind of like, we like overlooked teams a little bit. We just wanted to get back to the finals. We ended up going six with Atlanta in the first round. Like we didn't handle business the way we should have and put ourselves in a hole. We was now three and you damn,
Starting point is 01:01:44 they gotta be perfect to win four games in a row. And you know, I sprayed my ankle the first play of the game, and you know, the margin for error is just that much shorter when you're down 0-3. So I think last year was the perfect balance of like, obviously we got KP, we got Drew, and I think our team was just in a perfect space of like, everybody got paid,
Starting point is 01:02:05 everybody had individual success and awards. The only thing we haven't done besides Drew was win a championship. And I give a lot of credit to our coaching staff and Joe. Just the way we prepared, like in our mindset, we knew how to play and we really, we just got better every single day. We approached how we was gonna play the Bucs
Starting point is 01:02:25 the same way we was gonna play the Wizards. We didn't look past nobody. And we lost 18 games last year and we went 16 and three in the playoffs. I know we still playing and nobody wanna give us our credit but the shit we did last year was special. No, that shit was special. How did you get your motherfucking credit?
Starting point is 01:02:41 I don't know who's throwing you different. Anybody else is just like, hey, as a Patriots fan, please tell me that we was the hardest team. You know what I'm saying? Last shot of the postseason. That nigga do got all the Celtics grayed out for the older adultie. You know, this ain't something.
Starting point is 01:02:53 Lucky can never. No, I mean, I said it, I'm on record for saying it like. Yes, sir. It's the Patriots that was the hardest series that we had last year, just like, how fast they play, they was subbing in three people at a time, TJ McConnell was unreal at home, like, TJ Nash was doing, OB Toppin,
Starting point is 01:03:20 like the role players that they got, they just all so selfless, they don't move, they don't stop moving. Everybody play without the ball. And they just like, they, the way they play, they trying to, they like bait you in a plan, how they play and like that works for them. And you know, our thing is like,
Starting point is 01:03:40 we want to get stops and defense and you look up, the score might be 135, like that's the game that they want to play. And when get you playing that way like they can beat anybody and you know we came back in overtime the first game game three was down 19 and game four we went down to the wire like we swept them but like every game we were dead tired. They were all good games though for the most part like exciting games to be, I should say. I give any a lot of credit. Like we was dog tired after every game after that.
Starting point is 01:04:09 Listen, we don't get nice things often. So that compliments me a lot to me. Cause this nigga still didn't be like, he spoke to time like that. The way we start off this season, I don't know if I can be happy this year or not, man. It's a thank you for them kind words. That's all I need right now.
Starting point is 01:04:21 Nah, when Drew first got traded from Milwaukee, what'd I tell you? Who's gonna win? Nah, I told you, go get Drew. Remember, you guys sent the quarter. Oh, we got traded from Milwaukee. Yeah, I said, go get Drew. Y'all gonna win.
Starting point is 01:04:34 He said, I'm already on it. I said, no, you wouldn't, man. He said, I'm on it. And then I seen it happen, I said, damn, he was on it. He wasn't playing. Y'all, he wasn't playing. Damn, he really got pulled over to here. It was in the time of contact, no temporary.
Starting point is 01:04:47 Yeah, man. I'm just saying though, him joining the team though, how was it, bro? Did you think like when Drew got there, of course I got aspirations of winning, but he was like, nah, this is gonna help us. No, I mean. Wow, bro.
Starting point is 01:04:59 Absolutely, Drew was on the team with me in 2021 when we was in the Olympics. Fresh off, he just won the championship with the Bucks, came with us and we won the gold medal together. And I just, I understood at that time that Drew was like the Swiss army, like he could guard the one through the five. He could be on ball, he could play off the ball.
Starting point is 01:05:17 You put him in a dunker, he could set screens, he could score on any matchup. And he not like, you know, he a team player. When the big games, he gonna do what he's supposed to do. And not that he gonna fall back, but he just know how to how to play with, you know, superstars. And he like the ultimate teammate. So when we got Drew, it's definitely like, our confidence rose like, man, we just felt that much better about what we was about to do. Yeah. As a patient for him, I'm hating because y'all
Starting point is 01:05:48 cheating. You're not supposed to have Derek, white Andrew, and then switching to you and JB. That's not fair. Man, life ain't fair, man. Derek White got cold when he cut the hair. When he cut the hair. They had to pay for that though. I mean, they, they salary man, tax bill is probably nuts.
Starting point is 01:06:05 I can't imagine, I know he's selling a tape for a reason. I'm trying to do this. This shit's too much. I ain't dealing with this. We winning, but boy, this tax bill is crazy. It's worth it though, bro. Yeah, I mean, championships is for sure worth it, but. Y'all two a great star so far.
Starting point is 01:06:22 For sure. I mean, I want to ask, you know what I'm saying, having the crazy summer, you know what I'm saying, getting the dream, getting the gold medal, how you come back motivated? Obviously you're a professional, you come to hoop, but like having such accomplishments in a short amount of time, what keeps you motivated and locked in
Starting point is 01:06:35 and coming to this season? I think for me, one thing is like, man, I'm only 26. I think a lot of people, not some fans or people in the media might view like, oh, he been in a championship, he been in a conference final. Like they might think I'm older than what I am. Like. Boy, you look 30.
Starting point is 01:06:52 You gotta kick off early though. You gotta kick off early. You gotta kind of understand where it come from. And that's why I said I never understood the, hey, I'm like, why is it his fault? Because he was successful early. Like you came into league once, like don't age him for it.
Starting point is 01:07:04 Oh, you get mad at him for it, he was still killing. No, I mean, it's some truth to that, like the expectation for me was just way higher because I went to the conference finals at 20. So for me being 26, it's like, man, I got a lot of basketball left. A lot.
Starting point is 01:07:17 And that feeling of winning the championship and having that parade, it was like, man, I want to do this shit again and again and again. And, you know, my favorite players, like the guys I looked up to, they didn't just win one championship. Like I didn't come into the league of like. Or make one All-Star game, you know.
Starting point is 01:07:37 They had so many. They'd be your own guys, bro. That's what JT was on, the real one. He didn't say nothing about an all-star game, bro. He didn't say nothing. He didn't say nothing. He laughed. He laughed.
Starting point is 01:07:51 This is St. Louis. This is St. Louis. He just. Oh wait. He's telling me. He's telling me. He be your own guy. Nah, he know you're my damn man.
Starting point is 01:07:58 No, bro, you made the all-star game like this. Not a lot of people can see that. Nah, I was just talking to you. You got one of them. It's like. I did. You got the answer? I'm back. I was going team Jory, I'm back.
Starting point is 01:08:11 Hey, that's a game, man. Oh man. Well, I'm sorry, please, I'm being here with you as I begin. I think just like, the motivation came from like, man, I understand the space that I'm in and trying to maximize this window of like, I think just like the motivation came from like, man, I understand the space that I'm in and trying to maximize this window of like,
Starting point is 01:08:30 I wanna be one of the best players to ever play. And I understand the window that I have right now and God willing I'll stay healthy that, I feel like I put in the time and effort to take care of my body, to eat the right things and work on my game, to be one of the best that, it's not just, I wanna be one of the best players
Starting point is 01:08:50 to ever play, and not to say that it's about rankings, but I wanna accomplish everything that's in front of me. That's hard. I know he's about to get out of here. I wanna ask you, he speak high on Al Horford, that's his guy for real. Yeah, in fact. How you feel about him, man?
Starting point is 01:09:04 Seeing him, watching him win the championship with you, bro. I know that was big. No, Al, that's easily one of my favorite, if not my favorite teammate I ever had. From a professional standpoint, when I got drafted at 19, seeing how Al approached every practice day, every game day, every off day, is testament to like his career.
Starting point is 01:09:26 It's year 18 and like it was year 17 last year and we relied heavily on Al to help us win a championship. Like it's not a lot of people in year 17 that's starting on the team that's going to the finals and that game three against Indiana he had like eight three. Yeah he was caught over yeah I remember and it's like we needed him to win that game. So, Al took me under his wing, you know, since my first day and, you know, somebody that's like always been there for me, somebody that I've learned a lot from,
Starting point is 01:09:57 from the standpoint of like having a routine. I got my routine from watching Al have a routine. That's why he's been in the league for so long and been so successful. So, Al is one of the best people you will ever meet, one of the best players. All of fame career and to help him get over that top and win a championship was like, that was special.
Starting point is 01:10:21 No, I was so happy for Al bro, cause Al one of the coolest dudes ever bro. He just do his Nah, I was so happy for Al, bro, because Al one of the coolest dudes ever, bro. He just do his job, he'll help you with anything, give you any advice, he want the best for everybody. So I knew when y'all got him back, when Brad went back and got him, I was like, man, y'all gonna have a special run. And he ain't stopping no time soon.
Starting point is 01:10:38 Oh, he is still going. Nah, keep getting that check, my boy, keep moving. Facts, facts. Show before we get out of here, obviously we know you played and won championships, but do you have any personal goals you can share with us this season man? Man, I wanna win another championship bro.
Starting point is 01:10:51 Okay. Obviously like, you wanna win MVP, you wanna first team all NBA again and those things. And winning MVP or wanting to have that as a goal, that's not a negative thing. Nah, I don't know. Nah, that's why I'm just saying. If you wanting to have that as a goal, that's not a negative thing. Like, nah, I don't know. Nah, that's why I'm just saying. If you're aspiring to do that,
Starting point is 01:11:09 you're playing at a high level, you're playing efficient, you're dominating, your team is one of the best. And even if you don't win, right, it's only one person that can win, but it's five people every year that's playing at an MVP level. So just trying to, you know, continue to dominate, being more efficient, and understanding that this window we have, like trying to continue to dominate, being more efficient and understanding this window we have,
Starting point is 01:11:27 like trying to get better every day and winning the championship and getting our ring the other night was one of the coolest moments. And it was like, man, I wanna do that shit again and again and again. Yeah, for sure man. Listen, man, we know you gotta get out here, man.
Starting point is 01:11:40 We appreciate you sliding on this man. Me, it's a lot of congratulations. Before you leave, yo. Oh no, talk your shit about it. Because he's on Netflix. Starting Five baby. We appreciate you sliding on this, man. Me, it's a lot of congratulations. Before you leave, yo. Oh, no, talk your shit about it. Because he's on Netflix. Starting five, baby. And I caught my wife watching Starting Five, and she was like,
Starting point is 01:11:49 hey, Jason's a real serious dude. I said, don't believe that. Oh, that's you? That's not, he's funny. Like, he jokes. She's like, no, he's just so, like, mature. I didn't know he was only 26. I'm like.
Starting point is 01:12:02 You think you're calling me immature? You calling me, you're calling me WWE. No, I ain't saying he fake, but I I'm like. You think you're calling me immature? You calling me, you calling me WWE. No, I ain't saying he fake, but I'm just saying like you always, that's why people think you older. You carry yourself super like mature and put together like no shot to AE, but your clips against AE clips is totally different.
Starting point is 01:12:18 Like AE like I'm going crazy in this club. I'm like reach out to E. And then you come to yours, it's like, well seasoned, like, yeah. Come here son. Like, you know what I mean? I see it. That's what he did.
Starting point is 01:12:31 He wiped that. But now you always carry this stuff like super mature. I'm like, I'm like, man. That's dope, bro. That's dope. It's dope to watch y'all show, man. It's getting on there. For sure, that now is the new season,
Starting point is 01:12:45 but definitely check out the Star 5 if you haven't. How was that process of filming that, man? Like, you know what I'm saying? Obviously you always been a constant professional, but to let people in like your personal life, that type of, you know, the cameras always rolling. How was that experience? It got better, or you got used to it as the season went on.
Starting point is 01:13:00 Okay. Right. They did a good job of like blending in with all the other cameras that's always following you. Having people at your house and in your personal space and you know, with family time is different. And right, I'm on camera more of a reserved guy like T said, like, yeah, that's I am that person that they saw on Netflix, but you know, I'm
Starting point is 01:13:24 more open off the camera and things like that. But it was cool. And it was cool to be a part of the first season that they documented. Like, man, they saw when I got covered 2K, they saw when I won the championship. So to be able to look back years from now, have those moments. And my mom was on there, my son, some of my best friends. And just being on the first season like that, that was dope.
Starting point is 01:13:46 And, you know, I was glad I was a part of it. I think the fire part about it is you got to see all of the media experts, a lot of people like speaking down to, like you said, the high expectations, how they spoke about you all year and for you to win, especially the way they documented it, super fire, because it made a lot of people just deal with the results of it. And I mean, that's like. They never going to stop talking about it. That's real. What I realized in that moment when we that's like, they never gonna stop talking about you.
Starting point is 01:14:05 That's real. What I realized in that moment when we won is like, I thought I was gonna go on a rant and like, go back and everybody that ever had something to say about me and it's like, He's about to crash out? You think you are. Like, he's like, man, when we win, like, I got receipts. And it's like, man, that's not what this is about. When I was winning, I'm holding up the trophy,
Starting point is 01:14:25 my mom, my grandma crying, my son, I got my homies, I got 18,000 people in the stands. It's like, it's about the people that supported you and been rocking with you through the ups and downs. It's like, regardless if we win or not, they still probably talking about me on first take tomorrow. So that's never gonna go away. So I don't wanna never trip off.
Starting point is 01:14:44 You know what I'm saying. You a VP this year though, bro. I'ma give it to you. That's never gonna go away, so I don't ever trip off. You a VP this year though bro, I'm gonna give it to you. You see how you like, yeah, all that came to his mind when he grabbed the trophy. I'm crashing out. I'm gonna grab the trophy, say something now. That's me, that's why he is who he is. What you gonna say, Steven A, we coming for you. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:15:05 Yeah. I'm crashing out. Hey, shout out to you for hitting on the face time when you got the chip. We like it. That was fire. Yeah, that was hard, bro. I was hyped for him,
Starting point is 01:15:14 but he did the same thing we wanted to. I call him man, group project, you know, when he go ahead. That was good. See, see, I, see. My fault, my fault. See, that's what I'm saying. My fault, my fault.
Starting point is 01:15:23 Like, Netflix though, y'all ain't get to see, like he do this all day, bro. He joke all day. That's why I get to joke it from him. I started joking on him. I ain't joking on no other team. I don't lie, I joke on every team. But sure, man, we gotta get out of here.
Starting point is 01:15:38 JT, we appreciate you, man. Tell the people that can drop the new, the shoes, man, the new colorway dropping. We got a new colorway dropping, what's this?
