Remember, Nightcap doesn't happen without you. So please subscribe or you're going to make Ocho crack. We got our very special guest joining us tonight. Today, Vandy had his first
Starting point is 00:03:00 appearance on college game day in 17 years, and the Commodores beat Missouri to extend the program's best start in 80 years. Better yet, three wins have come against AP top 25 teams the first time in Vandy history, and here he is a large part of that, the reason why the Vanderbilt Commodores have had success, the quarterback Diego Pavia. Diego, what's going on, bro? You mute, you muted. My bad, my bad. What's up, y'all? I appreciate y'all how to be.
Starting point is 00:03:33 I got some people in the background, though, that want to say what's up. All right, what's up? Hey, who you got? Hey, that's what's up? How you doing, man? Yeah, yeah. Oh, hey, Chad.
Starting point is 00:03:44 Hey, hey, Ted, hey, I need some feet. I need some feet drills, Chad. Yeah, yeah, O.D. Well, bro, we appreciate you up. After a big win like that, we know normally you'd be out, probably celebrate with the boys, We appreciate you giving us some of your time.
Starting point is 00:04:01 Well, honey, you know the party don't start until after 12, so we're all. Okay, that's what's up. That's what's up. So you can't be there when the party starts. You've got to walk in, let them know you there. Now we're thinking alike, huh? When this season, look, after last year what you were able to do, you beat Alabama for the first time and forever.
Starting point is 00:04:21 And so now you set expectations. Coming into this season, what were the expectations for you and this ball club? Well, we set out in January that we want to win the national championship. We feel like we're the best team in college football still. Our defense is really good. Our offense is good. And our special team is good. So we just put those three together.
Starting point is 00:04:41 Shoot, you know what it is. And you, you, the way you've been playing, you kind of caught people by surprise last year. But the way you played last year. So you know the expectations coming in this year. You're supposed to improve on last year's production. How have you been able to stay level even keel? Don't get too high. Don't read the press, the internet, the press clippings,
Starting point is 00:05:06 and let everybody pat you on the back and tell you how great you are. You've stayed really level-headed, but you've played exceptional well this year. Coming into this year, a lot of people were like, man, Diego's figured out, he's washed. He ain't got it, you know what I mean. Real shit, real shit. That's what they were saying.
Starting point is 00:05:21 Yeah, yeah. You know, come show me. Come show me I ain't got it. Come show me you got me figured out. But, you know, I think the most of the, most important thing though is we're a team like we all got each other six that's how it is i like that hey we're confident where you where you from originally albuquerque new mexico they call it alba crazy new mexico though yeah i like it with the confidence you have not only the way
Starting point is 00:05:47 you play the way you speak the way you carry yourself the way you walk you you move your aura you move like you him where is that confidence come from especially at the quarterback position most of the time is frowned upon they want to be buttoned up and say all the right things but I like your style I like your style and do you think once you get to the next level please tell me you remain the same way you are now
Starting point is 00:06:09 I'm gonna be the same killer I've always been I've been doing this shit since Juko you feel me but no one believed in me no I like it I was a negative star you ever see one of those I like it I like it I like it. I'm looking at your numbers.
Starting point is 00:06:29 I mean, 10 or 19 and 129, you didn't have the greatest day, but you found a way when the rubber needed to meet the road. When you need, hey, it's 10-10. And it's four minutes in the ball game and we got to go down and get a touchdown because we're going to put pressure on you. We don't want you to kick no field goal. We want you to come down against our defense and have to get a tub because I'm going to get this in the end zone.
Starting point is 00:06:52 Hey, hey, don't we're going to get this ball. When I throw it, you can. it. When I hand it to you, just hold on to it because we're going to get this ball in the end zone. And we're going to put pressure on them to make them go down and get a touchdown against our defense. I was just in the huddle and we came off the timeout. And the first play was supposed to go to me. And then they changed it up and gave it to SETI. SETI got it closer or whatever. And I knew that next play. I knew I knew that bitch was going to me. So I was like, shit. Hey, moving.
Starting point is 00:07:26 So let me ask you this, they throw the hell Mary, and the guy catches it because the officials at first said no good, but they review it and then look, he caught it, but he was at the one. I was like, oh, shit, we're going into overtime. And the crazy thing is that we went into overtime with them last year, too, but the score was 20. So it was like, I was like, oh shit, that shit coming over. But it was going to swing our way this time, you know? Right, right. So now, look, you're 7 and 1. There's still a chance you guys can get to the SEC championship game.
Starting point is 00:08:03 You go to the SEC championship game. Anything can happen. You know you win the SEC, you go into the college football player. That's the one thing we know. Whoever, moving forward from now until perpetuity, if you win the SEC championship, you're going to be in the college football player. So now, how do you remain, how do you keep this team focused? They're like, look, guys, we really haven't accomplished anything yet.
Starting point is 00:08:23 Yeah, we're seven and one and we're happy. And the words of young thug, whoop-de-do, we seven-and-one. But now I'm trying to, how do I get to be eight and one? So what's your message? What's going to be your message to your team? Obviously, you're going to enjoy the win. You get 24 hours to enjoy the win. What is going to be to your message to your team on Sunday?
Starting point is 00:08:42 Well, I think a lot of guys broke up with their girlfriend, so they're hungry themselves. Real shit, real shit. Junior just broke up with his girlfriend, so he's hungry. the ball, you know? Okay, that's what's up. A lot of guys don't got girlfriends right now on the team, so I think that motivates us. But I think going into this next game, it's taking one game at his time. Texas is a good team.
Starting point is 00:09:05 They won tonight in a critical time, and we'll see them at home. Dude, we're really excited just to get another opportunity to play, though. Our defense is playing lights out. Our O-line, they were coming up to me after the game, and they're like, yo, bro, sorry, sorry, sorry, and I might, do we won, you know? but they just want to play better and just like become so dominant. Like that's just the expectation of just being a Vanderbilt football player now. It's just being dominant.
Starting point is 00:09:32 Like not these little margin wins. It's going out there and just lay it all in the line, you know. How have you been able to stay level-headed? Obviously, look, Vanderbilt, the program is not what, it's not one of these perennial powerhouses. But you're turning it into that because Johnny Mansell put Texas, and them back on the map. Now when they think of Texas A&M,
Starting point is 00:09:58 and they've had good players come out of Texas A&M. But Texas A&M now is the house where they play Kyle Field, is the house that Johnny built. Now you're that guy. You're the guy that's putting Vanderbilt football back on the map. So how does Diego Pavia stay level-headed? You know you to it. You know that.
Starting point is 00:10:17 You're like, damn, what's that smell? Oh, that's me because I'm the dokey. That's me. That's me. So how do you stay level-headed to make sure that you don't get too far in front of yourself? Well, one, I do yoga every Monday that makes you come and just like come back to Earth, you know? And then on Tuesday after practice, I do a lot of grounding. I'll ground for like an hour.
Starting point is 00:10:45 And that usually after that, it's like our full reset. I'm good to go, ready for fucking Saturday. That's what you got to do. So what a party? What a party at tonight? Have you ever heard of the street called Broadway? Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. What are we talking about, huh?
Starting point is 00:11:06 Okay, okay, okay, I like it. Hey, quiet and careful, Ocho. Nashville liked that. Ocho, you haven't been here? I've been to Nashville once. I've been in Nashville once. I've been in Nashville one. Hey, but listen, hey, D.P. You must like black girls.
Starting point is 00:11:19 Listen. Hey, D.B., this is the thing. I'm one that I don't party. I've never had alcohol before. I don't drink. I don't do anything. I don't go to clubs. I like jazz.
Starting point is 00:11:32 I like cigars. So I'm really not the fun guy you would like to hang with. And I play video game 24-7. So I'm really boring. My boy CB2. He don't drink. He don't do any of that either. And he still has a good time on Broadway.
Starting point is 00:11:45 There's a place for everyone. I'll tell you that right now. Yeah, yeah. Hey, yeah, yeah, yeah, Diego. Well, hold on. Is that an invite? Is that an invite? That's an invite.
Starting point is 00:11:55 That's an invite. We have two more home games. This is an invite for both of you guys to come out and show out. Hold on. I come. Can I come on the field? Do dogs bark? Hey, I'll be here.
Starting point is 00:12:11 And we might be able to put a helmet on you. Ask Theo. You still got some, how much time you got left available? Hey, Theo, what's up? What's up? Oh, what's good? What's up, bro? How you being good?
Starting point is 00:12:26 Hey, I always will. See this guy, you feel me? Yes, you pull out. Hey, I got you. Make sure you there. You're going to have a fresh cigar right there on the sideline for you. Hey, ask Theo, Vandy over here, they even let you, like, blow the whistle for, like, the start of the third quarter or whatever, huh? Bro, when I first, they got more recruits here now.
Starting point is 00:12:50 when I first came, the first game, they had probably six recruits on the sidelines. They had one dude in a wheelchair. He was a recruit. And I'm like, what is he going to do? But they said, we might need him. I said, the Lord need. Just give him some rest. But now today they have like 150 recruits, man.
Starting point is 00:13:12 It's wild. It's different. Yeah, hey, man, Vanderbilt. Hey, Vanderbilt turning up. They turn it up. So, hey, Diego, I mean, you got it? You're going to have any more eligibility left after this year? Yeah, I think I got like 14 or 16 years in the league.
Starting point is 00:13:31 Hey, hey, just sign me up. I'll win you a few of these, you feel me? That's what's up. Hey, man, Diego, man, that's unbelievable, man. So I get, see, now you with the guy because Theo is in Nashville, so you just go with Theo so everything just opened up. This is the guy. We might be going down to Nashville, man.
Starting point is 00:13:51 Damn. Hey, wait, but you should be, I'm going. Nashville is an hour and 30-minute flight. Where you what? Damn. I live in Miami. No, no, no, we might have to visit you. We might have to visit you.
Starting point is 00:14:03 Oh, we need to go bring some of them white girls with you. No. If y'all's fair and any, I know you like to keep him to y'all self. You know he's selfish. You know he's selfish. I am in the glasses and shit, both of them. No, no, I was going to come, I was going to come, but I can't come now because y'all, yeah, I'm on probation. Hey, I'm going to, hey, a, DP, Uncle, Uncle, Uncle's on probation and I'm married. I'm married. I'm married. I'm married.
Starting point is 00:14:35 Oh, shit. Yeah. If you have a cook out at your home, I might be able to come, but since you're going to be going out, unfortunately, I'm not going to be able to join you, Diego. I'm sorry. We can leave you guys at the, at the jail cell with my brothers or whatever. Hey, Diego, appreciate your time, man. Best of luck. Stay healthy. And, man, hey, we look. I love watching you every single week, watch you do your thing, man. Appreciate you, bro.
Starting point is 00:15:03 I appreciate you guys. That's love, man. I'm going to catch you guys. Love show. I'll see you here. Yeah, I see you. Let's see it. We'll see both of y'all.
Starting point is 00:15:11 All right. All right, bro. Appreciate you, man. Love you. Appreciate you. Hold on, Ocho. Hey. Is it 26 already?
Starting point is 00:15:22 Hey, he live. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. You could tell him. Oh, yeah, he's all the way live. He live. You know what it remind me of? This is my first time meeting him, just the interaction and the way he carries himself.
Starting point is 00:15:33 He's very, very confident. Hey, he remind me like, like Scatibo, but playing quarterback. Yeah. I like him. Oh, he all the way live. I like him. Oh, he, no, though, he live. like the Joker said that the first bat went oh we got a live with here yeah he all he all the way
Starting point is 00:15:55 went foul hey listen that that is the kind of quarterback i want to play for oh yeah that's the type of dude you want to play for like that may that eh unk that's good energy boy that's good energy it's different it's different than what a quarterback is supposed to like yes yes It's different. It's authentic. It's raw. Pause. I can see why I can see why I can see why Johnny gravitated towards him. Johnny sees, and I told you at the beginning, Johnny sees a lot of himself in him. Now I get it. And we're not talking just, we're not just talking about it on the field either. Nope.
Starting point is 00:16:35 I like good energy. Yeah. Because Johnny, Johnny, you know, Johnny got an opportunity to know him outside of the football or outside of the field. Yeah, okay, they're high and they kind of play similar. But they're probably. personalities and the confidence that they exude that they instill in their teammates. Yeah, I see why. I really see why now. That was dope. That was really dope. That was dope.
Starting point is 00:17:02 Yeah, that was a, he got Theo Bond. They won Charleston Southern. They'd be Virginia Tech. They'd be South Carolina. They'd be Georgia State. They'd be Utah State. lost to Alabama, beat number 10, LSU at the time, beat number 15, Missouri at the time.
Starting point is 00:17:23 They got Texas and Auburn, Kentucky. They got Texas on the road, Auburn at home, Kentucky at home, and then they finish up the season, in-state rival, Tennessee. Oh, man. It was, it's, it's, I said, you got the eligibility and say,
Starting point is 00:17:45 yeah, 14 to 16 years in the NFL. That's what my energy bill. Hey, what's up, everybody? Daniel Jeremiah here. And I'm Bucky Brooks. Then Rhett Lewis joins us for our rookie draft in quarter. of the week, where we highlight the rising stars and the masterminds calling the shots. For 25 years, I've explored what it means to heal, not just for myself, but alongside others. I'm Mike De La Rocha. This is Sacred Lessons, a space for reflection, growth, and collective healing.
Starting point is 00:19:05 What do you tell men that are hurting right now? Everything's going to be okay on the other side, you know, just push through it. And, you know, ironically, the root of the word spirit is breath. Wow. Which is why one of the most revolutionary acts that we can do as people just breathe. Next to the wound is their gifts. You can't even find your gifts unless you go through the wound. That's the hard thing you think, well, I'm going to get my guess.
Starting point is 00:19:30 I don't want to go through all that. You've got to go through the wounds you're laughing. Listening to other people's near-death experiences, and it's all they say. In conclusion, love is the answer. Listen to sacred lessons as part of the Maikultura Podcast Network, available on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. If one of us wins, we all win. I'm Ashley Reifeld, and I'm the host of the women's skateboarding podcast.
Starting point is 00:19:55 Good luck with that. Good luck with that is a skateboarding podcast that is part cultural record, part news brief, mostly group therapy, and a place to talk about the past, present, and future of women and gender expansive skateboarding. This week, me and my co-host, Nora Vasconcellos, and Alex White, we have Bobiana Delphina. on the show, a professional skateboarder from Florida whose grit was forged in a family of athletes. Tune in to hear how she broke into the boys' club, what it takes to be pro,
Starting point is 00:20:22 and why just being grateful you're here shouldn't be the price of entry. Maybe the industry thinks that we just started skating five years ago because that's when they maybe started paying attention. It's a no-fluff conversation about putting in the years, stacking clips and receipts, and still having to prove your worth while the industry catches up. You break down the door, sick now, like, hold the door for everyone.
Starting point is 00:20:41 we created good luck with that because we want to share our experience of existing in an industry that wasn't always built for everyone. I just want to remind everyone how good Rishie Rice was last season and these three healthy games.
Starting point is 00:21:24 He was the wide receiver 2 in fantasy. I think Rishie Rite just goes off this week. The Chiefs come on a flip pass to Rice. This side, touchdown! Remindry Stevens is my sleeper this week. This is a matchup where I think I can slide in Stevenson into my flex position and he could deliver double-digit points this week. Great takes the snap, hands it off.
Starting point is 00:21:42 Romaree running it right, and running into the end zone. Touchdown! It's never too late to turn your fantasy season around. Starting point is 00:22:21 Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Oh, Joe, we got a very special guest. The director, Black Panther, the director of Creed. He's a recipient of, of four NAACP Image Award. He's been nominated for two Academy Awards, a Golden Globe and the Grammy.
Starting point is 00:22:44 He's the director, as I mentioned, Black Panther and Creed. He has a new movie that's coming out in April called Senators. Here he is, Ryan Coogler. Ryan, how you doing, bro? I'm happy to be with y'all, bro. I'm happy that you're with us.
Starting point is 00:22:57 Man, I'm feeling good, bro. Like, big fans of y'all coming up, I used to play football. Not as well as y'all. But big fans of you, y'all there and then and then watching y'all transition man it's been it's been beautiful bro like it's it always warrants my heart when i see uh when i see athletes prolong that career you know what i'm saying well let me well let me ask you this right okay you want you like
Starting point is 00:23:22 you played football did you have professional or collegiate aspirations absolutely bro yeah absolutely bro i used i used to play with marchion real okay okay okay beef mode yeah yeah yeah we're from we're from the same neighborhood so okay okay um You know, I played him, played against him in Pop Warner High School and college. Yeah. I played at Sacramento State. So, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, bro, we, we both play for the same coach, man. You remember Coach Steve Muschagin?
Starting point is 00:23:50 Hey, Coach Moose. Yeah, Coach Moose, got me my scholarship at, uh, at Sacramento State. Oh, yeah, look, that's me scoring a touchdown on, on Davis right there, on UC Davis, yeah. Oh, that's loud. You were a wide receiver, right? I was. I was, I played a slot. I was.
Starting point is 00:24:04 You were cooking them. I'm not like y'all bro but I pay for school you know what I pay for school you know what I pay right you feel me there yeah they are going yeah that's dope man hey coach moose is good man so let me ask you this okay you go to college you have a nice little college career when did you decide to say you know what film is going to be the direction that I go in yeah bro it's a great question so um I got my first scholarship to a school call a same Mary's College. It's known as a basketball school.
Starting point is 00:24:39 We used to have a football team. And then I dropped the program after my freshman year. Okay. I played quite a bit that season. Like I was returning, I was returning kicks. You know, I was playing, I was playing receiver. I played a little bit of DB that year. And so I got some more scholarship offers.
Starting point is 00:24:57 But while I was there, it was a woman named Rosemary Graham who taught a creative writing class. And she read something on I wrote. And she was like, hey, me, you think about writing screenplay. You know, my girlfriend at the time, she now my wife, she bought me a little software that I could write screenplays, but I fell in love with it, man. So by the time I transitioned to Sacramento State, I was doing it on the side, taking, taking writing classes and shooting short films with my hummys.
Starting point is 00:25:23 You know, and then I applied to film school in 2007. It's crazy, bro, because we was in a, I was doing real well, going into my senior year, and I got an injury doing seven-on-seven. where a walk on, a cat was trying to walk on a team was all very eager and he caught me on a post and broke my zygomatic arch right here.
Starting point is 00:25:42 So I was eight weeks off where I couldn't lift, I couldn't do anything. And during that time, I realized, like, I need to put this application in for film school. Man, football is fleeting.
Starting point is 00:25:54 You know what I'm saying? So I applied to USC film school and I got accepted. I found that I got accepted like in the middle of the season. And right around that time, man, I started to find myself
Starting point is 00:26:03 my mind wondering when I'll be on I'm thinking about something else. I'm thinking about a movie I want to make. I'm thinking about being on set. You know, that shit is dangerous. When you're doing that, you got to be football, you got to be all in. And that was kind of when I knew, you know what I mean?
Starting point is 00:26:18 That's dope, man. I want to talk, listen, I'm a movie head. I enjoy films. I enjoy the arts and the crafts of it. I enjoy getting lost in character. I get very passionate when I talk about stuff like this. So I watch the trailer for Senna's. And to me, it seemed like a unique blend of, of,
Starting point is 00:26:35 supernatural action, you know, mystery and psychological theater. How did you approach this genre and, in bending concept? And what was it about this story that made you want to tell it? Man, that's a beautiful question, man. So I had an uncle who was from Mississippi, you know, I'm from awful. But I had an uncle who was from Mississippi. And he was like the oldest mirror of my family, all this male member of my family, you know what I'm saying? So whenever I kicked it with him, he wanted to listen to all blues records and drink all
Starting point is 00:27:02 with Tyler Whiskey. you know what I'm saying and he passed away while I was working on Creed 2015 and I never really really reckoned with his passion you know what I'm saying I would I would put blues records on
Starting point is 00:27:14 to think about him and that was how I got the idea for this man like like you know coming off a black panther was a real long movie that would kind of for everyone we dealt a lot of tragedies a lot of a lot of misfortune
Starting point is 00:27:26 and dealing with the COVID situation so for me I wanted to make something that was quick but also something that was very much very unique, very profound, you know what I'm saying? Like, like in, and I wanted to play in a genre rock and incorporate music. But I also wanted to make something that was a little bit, that was a little scary, man. Because, you know, black folks, we like that.
Starting point is 00:27:46 You know what I mean? We like theater and talking at the screen, you know what I'm saying? I think it's something that, um, get him here and there. Exactly, bro. Exactly. You know, I think, I think, I think, um, we have some incredible filmmakers that have capitalized on the medium, you know what I'm saying? You know, you think it Jordan.
Starting point is 00:28:02 Joy and Peele. Yeah, but Spice done this thing in that genre, near the cost of everything in that genre. You know, so I was fired up about it, bro. And, you know, truthfully, bro, like it was a chance for me being a product of the Greg migration, you know what I'm saying? I'm from being born and raised on the west coast.
Starting point is 00:28:20 I get back to the south and embrace that, you know what I'm saying? Embrace that part of my ancestry, you know what I mean? Like, I had the most amazing time making this movie, bro. How long, I'm just curious, how long did it take to make a movie in general? I'm not, I don't mean this one in, in specifically, but I'm just saying in general, what's the timetable action? That's a great question. So this one we made relatively quickly, but they go from, they can go from anywhere from two to four years, you know. What?
Starting point is 00:28:51 That's able to make in one year. Yeah. Yeah, it's essentially, bro, it's essentially like, imagine, imagine a season, season and a half football. You know what I mean? it takes you six months to shoot six months to a year to shoot it and then you have to edit it it takes you another six to months to a year to edit it correct yeah man and that's not including writing the script because i write the script too right okay sometimes you got to shop the movie around you know right right um you know uh so i can tell you how long my movies all took so
Starting point is 00:29:18 it's my fifth movie that i wrote and directed okay fruitville um it took oh classic classic man right on that's crazy i said that man but it took me it took me about a year to make that one. Okay. Um, you know, uh, uh, Cree, we shot that we started, so Cree, we are, Cree was about a year and a half, you know, like, like, like, a half of that year was just trying to convince the loan that, that it was, that it was worth doing. You know what I mean? And rightfully so, you know what I mean? He was, he was, he wanted to make sure that we was, we were, we worked for him. And, um, and then we shot in January, we put the film on, like, November. That was a fast one. Black Panther took about two years, started working on in 2016, put it on
Starting point is 00:29:58 2018, but, you know, Kona Favre was like a, was like a four-year movie. You know what I'm saying? I wrote one script. You know what I'm saying? Chadwick passed away. I didn't know you, you know, I didn't even know you was sick. So I didn't have to rewrite that. You know, we got going. The pandemic slowed down quite a bit. And then, you know,
Starting point is 00:30:14 my lovely actress got injured. So we had to shut down for a little bit. You know what I mean? And then we put that one out. So, so I wanted to make something fast after that, after that, you know, four years on one movie, you feel? But I was blessed, man, to be able to make something that I'm so proud of, man. Like, you know, really proud of this.
Starting point is 00:30:33 I can't wait to show it to y'all. I think y'all going to dig it, man. Listen, I know I'm going to dig it. When you watch the trailer, for me, when it comes to anything that you do, whether you're an athlete, you have to be a special athlete that puts butts in the seats. When you're a comedian, you have to be a comedian that has stage presence to always keep the crowd engaged. When I walk the trailer and it catches you, when it catches you right away, I don't know
Starting point is 00:30:55 who did the end and I don't know who did the trailer. But I'm telling you, right away, it catches you. And it keeps you and it holds you. And then it's like, it's an appetizer, but it ain't enough. It ain't enough because I want to see what's next. So now I can't wait to see it. And it just, I'm very passionate and enthusiastic when it comes to movies. Bro, I've been a fan of yours for a long time, all your work, everything you've done.
Starting point is 00:31:20 That's why I can't shut up right now. I'm going to tell you something crazy. Ocho, for real, bro. I'm going to tell you something crazy. We met me for it, bro. for real we met at the at the at the at the tribeka film festival it was the first film festival i ever got into spike did a movie called cobi doing work
Starting point is 00:31:36 and ESPN had the world premiere of it bro and i and i and i saw you in there and i went over there and shook your hand bro you know what i'm saying just just just on the strength you know just being a fan of what you do on a football field bro i was i was a student in the game bro you know what i'm saying like what y'all what y'all was doing bro over there in cincinnati man when it was when it was when it was when it was when it was when it was you and t j and the boys bro yeah Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:31:57 You know what I'm saying? Hey, like, like, just, just the, the precision of the rock running, brother, the confidence, you know, you know what I'm saying? Both of y'all had that. Both of y'all had the mental game, too, bro. I remember, I remember Shannon, bro, and he used to be miced up. Oh, bro, you know what I'm saying? Hey, you know.
Starting point is 00:32:15 I appreciate that. I appreciate that. Hey, right, let me study your movies. A lot of your movies, you got Michael B. Jordan. Now, Michael B. Jordan in this role, he plays a dual. role. He's stacking, because I'm like, I was like, hold on, they look like this, this looked like Michael B. Jordan playing both with Ebo for. I said, come on. Now, hold on. So I had to rewind and look even close. I say, it is. So what is it about Mike that you love
Starting point is 00:32:40 casting him in your movies? If I'm not mistaken, he was in Fruitvale, he was in Fruitvale, too. Yeah, he been in all of them. Look, bro, like, like, what you'll find, um, it's chemistry, man, you know what I'm saying? It's a head coach on a quarterback. It's a quarterback. receiver, you know, like, like, you get it, you develop a shorthand where, um, where you save time, you know what I'm saying? You establish a tone for the rest, for the rest of the crew. Um, and, and we're not the first ones to do it, man. Usually when you see, when you see filmmakers work, they usually had a guy. Mike and Denzel. Yeah. Oh, yeah, man. I mean, big time, Spike and Denzel. Tony Scott and Denzel. Um, you know, um, you know,
Starting point is 00:33:17 Scorsese, how to, how to, how to, how the thing with the Niro and then caprio. You rekindled it with Leo. Exactly. You know, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's helpful, man. And Mike has a, you know, Mike, Mike has a, has a very amazing work ethic. You know what I'm saying? Like he's always willing to go, always trying to push himself. He doesn't want to rest on his loros. You know, and I can rock with that, bro. So, you know, I'll put him in, I'll put him in every movie if I can.
Starting point is 00:33:44 He'll always have a role if I'm working, you know what I mean? Let me ask you this, right? How did you come up with the name sinners? Why are the name sinners? That's a great question, bro. we found that late man like for a long time that movie was just called grilled cheese it was a working it was a working title yeah like so if you put up in louisiana you know um this past summer and say hey man we're grilled cheese shooting that they would have brought you to our movie okay you know and in and the story behind that name was I've been cooking these long these long drawn all crazy meals I wanted to make something quick and fast I knew it was taste good you know what I'm saying so that's how he came up with that but for sinners you know it was a collaboration between us and the students you know it was a collaboration between us and the studio trying to figure out the right name for the movie. And we realize that that line, you know, that word was said so many times throughout the script.
Starting point is 00:34:34 You know, it deals with blues music and its relationship with the church. You know, like a lot of times the best blues singers will come from gospel. You know what I'm saying? You know, a lot of times that daddy's was pastors, you know what I mean? And they're singing music about drinking and bumping and grinding. And it's in conflict with how they was raised, you know what I'm saying? So that dynamic was one that we were really, that we were really, you know, once we realized like, like, it was like, oh man, it was always the name. It should have always been called that, you know.
Starting point is 00:35:05 But this movie, but trust no one because this movie has a lot to do with paranoia. Absolutely, bro. Like, I mean, look, it's, you know, it's dealing with, it's dealing with black culture. you know what I'm saying and a lot of folks don't know that like that I would argue that blues music is the most important contribution
Starting point is 00:35:30 that America has made to global pop culture you know what I'm saying? Everything comes from that and when you do the research it really came from this one specific area of Mississippi you know what I mean like like in
Starting point is 00:35:43 at that time when blues was created it was a very hard place to be black you know what I'm saying and people were trying to people were trying to affirm that humanity, affirm that dignity at a time when it was, you know, when it was very difficult
Starting point is 00:35:58 and people were trying to keep them separate, right? You know what I mean? And for me, that experience kind of breeds a level of paranoia. You know what I mean? When you can't be out after dark in certain towns,
Starting point is 00:36:09 where you know, where everybody knows everybody when somebody news shows up, you know what I'm saying? Or somebody who's been gone a long time, you know, it's a little bit of, you know, you might look out on a certain way, you know?
Starting point is 00:36:20 I mean, how did y'all come up, man, did you all come from places is where everybody knew everybody? You could tell an outsider at the job of that. I'm from a small town. There were 3,500 people with two traffic lights. So, we pretty much knew everybody. Now, obviously, there were people that would come back from New York or Chicago or Detroit
Starting point is 00:36:39 that I wasn't familiar with, but I knew their family. And after a while, they ended up staying. So we were cool with them also. You said something very interesting because everybody talks about the Mississippi Delta, the Delta Blues. This film deals with a lot of brotherhood, loyalty, fate. Yes, sir. You did a great job of working in and putting all that together, and it came together.
Starting point is 00:37:04 From the trailer for what I saw, I'm going to go, I haven't been to the movie since the pandemic. I'm going to go check this one out. I'm interesting to see how you tie this thing all together. Now, I saw the two-minute trailer, but I want to see you tie this thing together for 90 minutes. Yeah, yeah. I mean, I mean, we, I'm proud of it, man. And like, look, another reason I think you're going, you're going to dig it, man, is your relationship with your brother Sterling, bro.
Starting point is 00:37:27 You know what I'm sure? Like, whenever I hear y'all, whenever I hear y'all talk, I got to imagine in y'all neighborhood, y'all was known. You know what I mean? Like, you know, like in that, so these twins, you know, it's a-stack and smoke. Yeah, smoke and stack. It's an archetype, right? Like, every neighborhood, I've ever been in had a set of twins that everybody knew that was
Starting point is 00:37:43 kind of notorious, you know what I'm saying? Yeah. And we plan on that, you know, that relationship between the brothers, man, what makes them similar? What makes them different? I think Mike just did a beautiful job with it, man. I think you really going to enjoy it. Anybody who got that type of relationship, you know what I'm saying?
Starting point is 00:38:00 Got a big brother, got a little brother. You know, I'm going to really feel this movie, I think, on a different level. I like it. I got one more question, man. After creating something like this, something that's so bold, so different, and, you know, you're pushing boundaries with most of your work and your craft. And, again, I'm going to tell you, I'm a hard point because I've never had a chance to actually tell you, Now I do, I'm going to make sure I let you know I'm a huge fan of everything you've done.
Starting point is 00:38:24 And I'm really, I'm really, very excited for this. But do you see yourself continue to push boundaries with more genre films or just, I don't want to be too nosy, but what's next? We got another creed coming. If we do got another creed coming, I want to shoot my shot real quick. Oh, we did. I could be like the final boss. Yeah, we got another creed coming for sure.
Starting point is 00:38:45 Oh, let me, let me, let me know. Mike's going to direct that. So, yeah, like, you know, absolutely, bro. Like, I think, I think we love to make something happen for you. And the other piece for me is, like, you know, I want to work a long time, bro. Like, I want to make all types of stuff, man. And I do love working in the genre space. This is my first, this is my first, like, movie with out and out horror elements.
Starting point is 00:39:12 And, bro, I tell you, it's very addictive. You know what I'm saying? Like, like the idea, the idea of doing something else. that that isn't this much fun. It kind of frightens me a little bit, man. Like, you know, so, but we'll see, man. We'll put this out to the world and see how people respond and then we'll go from there.
Starting point is 00:39:29 But I'm definitely, I'm definitely not closing the door on doing more genre work for sure. Man, it was just too much fun, which is all for real. Right, right. I like it. Yeah, but you know what, Ryan, when I look at it and I think about like you did Fruitvale, you've done Creed, you've done Black Panther, now you're in this genre. It's kind of like Spike, because Spike is, kind of been all over the place.
Starting point is 00:39:49 Yeah. He's done Malcolm X. He's done Hurricane. He did Devil and Blue Dress. He's done Harlem Blues. He's done inside man. He's done, uh, uh, uh, uh, I think man on, I think he did man on. Now, that was, that was a really, he did $25,000?
Starting point is 00:40:04 $25,000, yes. So he's kind of been, is that kind of the direction, like, look, I don't want y'all to hold me in there and saying, oh, he only does, if this is a comedy, this is right. If it's something to do with Marvel or a Black Panther, this got to be right. You want to be like multifaceted. You don't want to be tied down or pigeonhole or tight cast for any particular type of movie. Right.
Starting point is 00:40:24 That's absolutely correct, man. Spike is a big, big hero of mine, man, a mentor. You know, same with John Singleton. You know what I'm saying? Yep. Big hero mentor. And then stepping outside of our, you know, our community. Right.
Starting point is 00:40:38 I love filmmakers like Steven Soderberg, you know what I'm saying. Well, you never know what they're going to do next. Right. But you got to, you know, it's going to be quality. you know what I'm saying like like if and I do definitely want to continue to push myself but also push the medium forward man you know what I'm saying like it's it's a blessing to be able to to work in a space where you get to work on things that are fresh work on things that haven't been done before you know for instance with this film
Starting point is 00:41:03 you know it's the first time that that iMac's camera has been combined with a with ultra panavision lens so it's the same it's the same camera work same camera package that was used on Quinn Tarantino's film the hateful eight And that was great. Yeah, yeah. So we combine that with the traditional IMAX film camera, first time ever, you know what I'm saying? So getting the chance to break new ground and do that with, you know, with people of color on the screen. Right.
Starting point is 00:41:28 You know what I mean? And a story set in the Mississippi Delta, man, it's a great honor to be able to do something like that. You know what I mean? And it helps me to be motivated, it helps me to stay sharp. You know, I'm getting to work with people who I've been working with for a long time. And it's just amazing. I don't want to be too presumptuous. of this, but I saw something
Starting point is 00:41:47 and it seems like, I forget the two brothers, but it's two brothers, Ocho, and one of them might be cast. I would have throw my hat in for Techala. You know, I would throw my hat in. I just throw my hat in. Hold on, man, hold on. What's you doing?
Starting point is 00:42:01 Hold on. Hey, man, I want to throw my head into me. Hey, man, get it in there. Hey, hey, man, we can talk about it, man. Hey. How are you going to take Mistilo? Can I get my role first in Cree? Okay.
Starting point is 00:42:14 Oh, you're okay. You want to be one of the fighters that Creed fight. Yeah. Okay, okay, okay. Yeah, I got an extensive background in combat sports, so it would be perfect to be able to transition, so I ain't really got to play no character. I can just be myself.
Starting point is 00:42:28 Hey, pop in that thing as also, huh? I feel it. Yeah, all this hard. Yeah. All this is hodge. Oh, all this hodge. Oh, yeah, yeah. I mean, hey, they had him already in the uniform.
Starting point is 00:42:40 I was like, okay, yeah, he could definitely pass for Tchalla. Yeah. He could. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah, all this shot, big shots out of the artists, man. He's incredible. You know, he made watches, too, bro. Does he?
Starting point is 00:42:51 But, like, straight up, straight up, knowing how to make watches, bro. Right. Wow. Like a genius, bro. You know what I'm saying? Ryan, were you, as a kid, were you in the comics, were you a superhero fan? Yeah, big time. I had an older cousin.
Starting point is 00:43:05 You know, I'm the artist of three boys. So I didn't have no big brother's always been looking for him. You know what I'm saying? I had an older cousin who was seven years older than me, who was a big guy. And I got into him just because he was. I thought he was cool, you feel me? So that was when I started reading him. But I did always read him.
Starting point is 00:43:20 Like, I took a break from a little bit when I got serious about sports. Right. So we still watched the cartoons with how you, but it was, you know, it was all school and ball. But like, you know, from, I would say from like eighth grade, like ninth grade maybe to my senior year of college. And when I went back to film school, I got back into him. You know what I mean? Do you collect them? Man, that's a great question, bro.
Starting point is 00:43:44 honestly I do I do man but not but not actively bro like what happens now is it's like I'll go to Comic Con for work and I'll go they got they got basically a floor you know where you can go
Starting point is 00:43:59 where you can go where you can go trade by sale yeah I go in there hit the floor and cop one or something you know what I mean but it's been a while since I've been in the comic book story man I'm not I'm not going to hold you give me your top five superheroes ooh
Starting point is 00:44:14 Shit, all right, all right, I'm gonna go fast. I'm not, I'm not gonna overthinky. I'm gonna go, I'm gonna go to, I'm gonna go to Chala number one. Okay. Um, and then I'm gonna go, I'm gonna go, I'm gonna go Wolverine. Okay. Two, can I put villains in it? You can.
Starting point is 00:44:32 Yeah, I got, I got, I got, I got Magneto number three. Um, you got who Magneto? Magneto, yeah, I got, I got, I got, I got Magneto number three. Um, I got, alright, I'm gonna go, I'm gonna go, I'm gonna go deep cut. I'm gonna deep cut. Roar Sarch from, from Watchman.
Starting point is 00:44:54 Okay, I know, Roar Shark, Rochark. Watchman. And then, and then I'm gonna go, I'm gonna go, I'm gonna go Rogue. Okay. I'm like, that's a good one. Yeah, yeah, Rogue is gosh.
Starting point is 00:45:11 Roar, like the, you know, you know, you know, take her glove off, touch, touch, you, take your powers, knock you all. I mean, that's, that's, that's, that's pretty, that's pretty solid. I'm surprised you really didn't go with a lot of the old, like, like Superman, Batman, Batman ain't no superhero. Batman, he can't do itch without that belt. Bro, bro, Batman, Batman was a dog from, you know, bro. Like, the fact that I'm saying is what I'm saying, Batman is crazy because, because that was, that was, that was, man, that was, man, that was, that was the one for us because they had that, they had to, they had to, they had to animate a series. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:45:42 And we used to mainline that I had a homie from Fresno who played DB incredible defensive back. He's a coach now. Man, me and him during fall camp, bro, we went half on a DVD pack. And during them double days, we were ride back to his girl house and watch the movies. He'll make a little food for us, bro. We're on the couch, bro. Taking it back to April grade, would it? You know.
Starting point is 00:46:08 That's live. That's live. so black panther three how long we got to wait not long yeah not long i mean there's been a lot of rumors circulating that uh uh uh uh denzel gonna be in it yeah i don't know that's what that's what the word in the street yeah yeah yeah yeah we're talking yeah yeah we i'm i'm i'm dying to work with denzil man and i'm hoping we can make that happen but um but but i but i I got every intention on working with him in that movie. And he, as long as he, as long as he interested, man, it's going to happen.
Starting point is 00:46:49 Wow. But, you know, he, he'll live in legend, man. And a great, in a great mentor for so many of us, you know, like, like he just, he's all about, he all about looking off of us now, man. You know what I'm saying. And, you know, what an example, bro, for how to live, man. He got his family around him. You know, his children. Yeah, man.
Starting point is 00:47:10 Like, everybody running. We've been with Pauletta for 40 plus years. Oh, she's, she a cute. John David used to train with me in Atlanta. I had retired, but he was down at Morehouse, and the trainer that trained me bring him to the track, you know, you know, tell him how to do certain things. Yeah. I've known that family for 20, that was in, I retired, so like 20 plus years.
Starting point is 00:47:31 Yeah. So, and Denzel is great. Yeah. His wife, Pauletta. Yeah. John David, man, they're unbelievable. Unbelievable. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:47:39 Or, see, I just seen Denzel, I wasn't able to actually, I was able to let him know I was there, but he wasn't taking no visitors. It didn't matter. It didn't matter who you were. I was able to see him last week on New York. I went to see Othello. Yeah. Yeah, he'll play with he on Broadway, bro. No, no, no, no.
Starting point is 00:47:55 Yeah, when he's on Broadway, he's in a different zone, bro. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. How was it play? Oh, man, beautiful. Beautiful. Listen, I took drama. I took drama in high school, so that's why I still have a love for. for drama and the arts and theater and dance.
Starting point is 00:48:11 So I really... Excuse me. Huh? Come on, Unk, man, start playing, right? Hey, listen. Uncle, you already know because you can, hey, unc, you can hear me talk when I talk about certain things. You already know it's something I really like now.
Starting point is 00:48:26 Hey, why you, why you call Bush when he said dance, I was when he got up in there on you, bro. Hold on. This is how you know I love dance too. Mind you, R.C., I did, I did, um... I did ballet when I was playing. Yeah. I just left, I just left New Orleans last week.
Starting point is 00:48:43 I went to see Alvinelli, man, for the, the umpteen time since 1988, when my grandma took me to go see him in 88 at the Gusman Theater. I love it, bro. Man. Alvin in the Chip months. Hey. Hey, come on. Hey.
Starting point is 00:48:58 Hey. I want to go see him. I'm going to see him. I haven't been to a whole lot of Broadway. I saw, uh, I saw, uh, I saw Samuel, Jackson, when you play Dr. King, I might not get there. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:49:14 Broadway is different. Yeah. It's so different than going to the, it's so different to go into an actual movie. Yeah. I don't know if it, you know what I'm saying? Oh, I mean, you just went to a, but to sit there and to see, I'm like,
Starting point is 00:49:27 damn, this is amazing. Yeah. It's no joke, bro. It's a true actor's medium. You know what I'm sure? Yes. Like, like whereas in film, you know, like, like, it's arguably a filmmaker's medium.
Starting point is 00:49:40 They'll say television is a writer's medium. Like, like, that stage is an actor's medium, bro. They got nothing to save them. You know what I'm saying? They just, they just up there, you know what I mean? It's no, you can't fool me in. You know what I'm saying? Like, it's just, I'll love it, bro.
Starting point is 00:49:55 And that's what Denzel says. Denzel says he's a, he's a theatrical actor that went to the screen. See, he cut his teeth on Broadway. Yeah. He takes that. He says some people are. a stage and they come to Broadway, I was Broadway that went to the, went to the screen. It's interesting too, bro, because like, because like a lot of people don't, what a lot of people
Starting point is 00:50:17 don't understand too is like, um, it's like, it's like, it's like the culture of Broadway, you know, like, like, um, very similar to, you know, very similar to basketball, right? Like if you, if you, if you, you know, like basketball is very culturally ingrained in the United States, so much so that if you go professional, if you go watch a professional basketball game, anywhere in the world. most of the players is going to be from the States you know what I'm saying if you go overseas to Italy
Starting point is 00:50:42 and watch a game there or overseas in Germany you know what I'm saying like you'll see a lot of players here and with that stage where you know it's so culturally ingrained in the UK
Starting point is 00:50:53 you know what I mean like it's a part of that culture they're about the stage the way we are about basketball here you know what I'm saying it's in every school it's in every you know so you'll see these British actors
Starting point is 00:51:06 getting shipped out all over the place, man. They ain't on every role, you know what I mean? They ain't on every, you know, white British actors, black British actors, you know what I'm saying? Yeah. And for me coming up, bro, the first time I hit, I hit a Broadway play and really,
Starting point is 00:51:24 and really seen, and really seen it, seeing somebody get down, you know what I mean? It was, it was like, you know, like, I didn't wish I had been exposed to it earlier, bro. You know what I'm saying? I might have been, I might have been doing that, you know what I mean? Right. And, well, hey, even if I just get a cameo,
Starting point is 00:51:41 I can be, I can be Unboku's brother. Oh, he got you, bro. Hey, hey, if you're going with it, man, hey. Hey. Hey, you boy, I can be a Boku brother or something. Let's put your boy in there. I'm coming out of that. I'm coming with it, Ryan.
Starting point is 00:51:57 Hey, hey, hey, I'm with it, man. But I'm with it, man. Y'all, y'all got such great chemistry, man. When I watch y'all, bro. Yeah. It's evident, man. I appreciate that. Sinners arrive in theaters,

Starting point is 00:57:33 All right, guys, we know y'all have been aware and say, no, you have not missed a bud interview. Nice time for you to show you guys the interview that Ocho and I had with Bud Crawford earlier today. Let's take a listen to this sound, guys. All right, ladies and gentlemen, we told you we had a very, very special guest joining us tonight. In the four belt era, he's the first male boxer
Starting point is 00:57:56 to be undisputed in two weight classes. Here he is taking on the ultimate test. He says he wants to do it. it. He's going to do it. Here he is, ladies and gentlemen, Terrence, Bud Crawford. Bud, what did you do? What's up with him? That I'm good, but look, we're seven, six, seven days away from this flight.
Starting point is 00:58:17 You seem so calm. You seem so relaxed. When I did the earlier interview on Club Shay-Shay, you was like, I'm ready. I've been preparing for this. Everybody seems concerned because you're moving up two, three different weight classes. But you seem calm. What's going on? What are you thinking?
Starting point is 00:58:33 now as the crescendo is about to happen? The only thing I'm thinking about is history, you know, making history. That's it. But how has camp been so far? How has your approach been in camp this time as opposed to other fights? Have you had a different approach in the way you went about training for this fight? No, you know, like I said before, you know, campus camp. You know, we go in there and put in the hard work, no matter who we fighting.
Starting point is 00:59:07 Canelo is no different. We train hard. We fight hard. You know, the work is done in the gym. The novice, like, oh, man, Bud, Bud, Bud. I saw a lot of people that do this professionally, do what you do, box professionally. And they'll say, I don't know if Bud understands the difference in punching power. from a 168 versus a 147 versus a 154 versus a 135 that seems to be the concern of people that do what you do for a living bud are you concerned about that because when i talk to you said he need to be concerned about my power you know one thing is evident is that you're going to get hit in the boxing match okay always you know everything will be you know all the questions will be answered
Starting point is 01:00:02 Come Saturday. You know, they don't got to speculate and guess and hope. Oh, man, he can't take the punch. How do you know I can't take the punch? You know? Illinois never hit me and I said I can't take the punch or, you know. So I just laugh at people that, you know, praying and hoping that it goes the way they wanted to go.
Starting point is 01:00:27 You know, so Saturday, everything will be shown. You look good. Bud, I mean, you had the internet and the buzz. They say, man, damn, bud, look good. Here we are. And we're still way a couple of days away from the fight. And he's looking like this. So obviously, he's put the time in the gym.
Starting point is 01:00:45 He's put the time in the wait room. The one thing that's never been questioned about you, Bud, is that you took your craft series. You put the time in. No one has ever said Bud Crawford stepped into the ring, and he was unprepared. So we know you are prepared. But what, and I asked us, well, damn, bud, I mean to step up in this weight class, what do you normally walk around at?
Starting point is 01:01:06 You're like, I'm good. He's like, this is really good for me because I ain't got to cut that much, I ain't got to cut that much weight now. Right, right. No, I'm good. I'm good, you know. Like I always said, everything happened for a reason and that reason being that I'm here now. And, you know, it's already written. So I'm just ready to go out there.
Starting point is 01:01:29 and make history and see my legacy comes out. Yeah. Listen, if there was one boxer who can make history, going up weight classes, going down weight classes, regardless of what it may be, you have a chance to cement yourself in the history books when it comes to some of the greatest boxes of all time. If there was one boxer that can do it,
Starting point is 01:01:51 it's you based on your mentality, your upbringing, your surroundings that have built you for moments like this. Boxing is about moments. Boxing is about making history and making fights people want to see. The only question I have going to this fight, I'm excited. I have you to win. What challenges you think you might face fighting a carnado? It's going to be a lot of challenges.
Starting point is 01:02:15 You know, he's a good fighter all around. You know, he's a good pressure fighter. He's a good counterpuncher. He's a good boxer. He has a great defense. It's going to be a lot of challenges. But that what makes for a great fight, you know, you got to, you got to solve the puzzle. So, you know, just like he got to solve my puzzle, I got to solve his.
Starting point is 01:02:40 You know, we're going to go in there and we're going to give our all and the best man going to win. Have you thought about it? Have you thought about it, bud, when you look at guys that have moved up, you look at sugar rate goes from 35 to 40, 47, 50, goes all the way to 60 to fight Marvin Hagler. You look at Florida and what he's been able to do. see Paki out. But when I think about a fighter, I'm looking at Roy Jones.
Starting point is 01:03:02 Roy Jones started out of the junior middleweight, 154 goes all the way up to heavyweight. I'm looking at you where you started. Bro, you 35, 30, 40 pounds from where you originally started at. Have you let that sink in the gap and what this would mean for Bud Crawford legacy? I'm going to be in attendance. I'm going to be able to tell my grandkids,
Starting point is 01:03:23 your Papa, Uncle Joe and I'm going to be there. Your Papa was there when Bud, Crawford shocked the world when he did what no one thought he could do other than himself and those in his circle. Have you allowed yourself to think about what this moment actually means in boxing history? I haven't thought about that yet because the job is not done yet. Okay. You know, so of course, you know, a lot of people kind of remind that, you know, this is history,
Starting point is 01:03:54 like go out there and do your thing, but, you know, you don't want to get too, Too far ahead of yourself. Yeah, like, it ain't, I ain't did nothing yet. You know, so after, after, you know, the fight, that's when, you know, all the emotions and everything come out. Reality sets. You know, my question is, how soon after your last fight did you start thinking about the Canelo?
Starting point is 01:04:22 Or was Canelo always on the horizon? You fought, you fought, Sean Porter, You fought an arrow, and then you fought this last fight. So how far did you start thinking about, man, I want to fight, I want to fight Canelo. Well, really, I wanted to fight Canelo when I was at 147 before I fought Magamore. I wanted to go up three divisions to fight Canelo, you know,
Starting point is 01:04:51 because that's never been done before. I want to do things that never been done before, you know, so I can be the first, like I was the first to become a two-time undisputed. In the four-billed era, first male boxer to do that. Like, that's legacy right there. When they talk about, you know, being undisputed and undisputed champions, they're going to cement my name as number one. It was the first fighter.
Starting point is 01:05:20 The first to do it. Yeah. And that's going to set the bar high for the fighters. coming after me to try to, you know, do better, which they probably will, you know, in history. But given time. But you giving them something to shoot for, bud. Yeah, yeah, yeah, for sure. Just like the other boxes I mentioned, Sugar Ray and Roy Jones Jr., some of these other fighters,
Starting point is 01:05:43 gave you something, gave you a target. And that's going to, because like you said, some fighter in 15 years, 20 years, 30 years from now, said, I saw what Bud Crawford did. And I said, you know what? I want to challenge myself like Bud. Bud went and did it, had no fear, and said, hey, whatever happens is going to happen, but I need to know. I don't want to have sit back and regressing, man, I should have got that fight. I should have did that and be afraid.
Starting point is 01:06:10 Somebody's going to say they did something because they saw Bud Crawford do it in 2025. For sure. Yeah, some that the fans always ask for, include myself being a huge boxing enthusiast. We always talk about making boxing great again, getting fighters to fight each other. think you're going to start something, taking on the challenge, daring to be great, wanting to create a legacy and make history and itself, I think a moment like this, when you do step in the arena with Canelo, it will get some of the other best fighters to actually fight each other instead of, you know, moshing around and picking and choosing when to fight, scared.
Starting point is 01:06:44 Just the challenges that you're taking on is dope. It's really dope to see. But after some of this magnitude, but a fight like this, where you talk about leg, I can see you talk about history. I'm not trying to put the carrots before the horse, but what's next after something like this of this magnitude, this damn big? Hey, listen, man, we take one fight at a time. One fight at a time.
Starting point is 01:07:10 Well, you meant to put the horse before the carrot because the carrot does go before the horse because the horse is chasing the carrot, but we got with you. But we get with you, we got, we understand what it mean, bud. My bad, my bad, my bad, my bad. I know you're very close to Floyd. Did Floyd give you any pointers about how to go in there?
Starting point is 01:07:32 Because Floyd fought Canello, I think Canello was 23. Floyd was 36. So you're a little slightly older than what Floyd was. Canello's a little slightly older than when he fought. But has he given you any pointers of how to go about your business? Or do you even take porters? Do you watch film on fights or do? Because Floyd said he didn't watch film.
Starting point is 01:07:50 He took what his trainer was going to say and he implemented that in the ring. Do you watch film and has. Floyd give you any pointers? Well, of course, you know, I watch a little film, you know, not too much because, you know, I always said that the fighter that I'm fighting now is not going to fight me the same way because my style is different. Gotcha. Watch a little video to see the things that they like to do.
Starting point is 01:08:14 Once I see that, then I know what to work on. I know what to watch out for. As far as Floyd, no, I haven't talked to Floyd about Pinello or the fight. When you go into the, when you say you watch a little video, are you looking for a pattern? Are you looking at the way he's trying to set things up? And you look in the way he's circled? You look in the way.
Starting point is 01:08:33 So what exactly are you looking for? Just, you know, a little bit of everything. I like to look at it, see what the attendees is and things that they do, things that they don't like, and just certain patterns, for sure. So then when I'm in the ring, I recognize it when I see it. And you know, you know it's coming. Are you, I was, you, you have all of us, all of us have a routine before I played from a ballgame.
Starting point is 01:09:02 There was some that, there was a pattern. There was a, I'm not really superstitious. Is there a certain routine that you do before every fight? And are you superstitious in any way? I'm not superstitious or anything. Like I said, all this is already written. You know what I mean? This is already a guy playing.
Starting point is 01:09:19 So, you know, there's nothing he can do. I can do that can write history. It's already, it's already done, you know, so, we just got to see how it goes. So go ahead, don't you go ahead. I'm going to say, I know how it's going to go. I know how it's going to go. And when, when you raise your hand, I'm going to jump on the ring like little mama did when Jason is going to stay.
Starting point is 01:09:47 I'm telling you right now. I'm jumping in the ring. They did, they just had to take me to jail. I'm going to make sure to have to take you to jail, though. Don't worry. That's love. So, but now, okay, here we are a couple of days away. Now, for the most part,
Starting point is 01:10:04 the hayes in the barn. There ain't no most far. I don't know. You might have one more day of road work, whatever the case may be. Now, all of a sudden, you're trying to make sure you come in at that 168. So over the next three to four days, what is a blurred call for day? Are you watching movies?
Starting point is 01:10:22 Are you, you know, you catch it up a laugh. You know, your trainer's in your ear and says, okay, remember this. This is what we worked on. So what's the last three to four days? What is that going to be like for Bud Crawford? A lot of media, a lot of interviews, got the press conference. You got the wins. You got, you know, the shakeouts.
Starting point is 01:10:43 You got the making weight. Then you got to fight. So you don't just be sitting in a room just chilling, you know what I mean? All day. you still got things to do. Is that a good thing or a bad thing that you don't sit alone in your thoughts? Like you said, you're doing interviews
Starting point is 01:10:58 and you got, you got this media tour that you got to go on and you mentioned you got the press conference. But for the most part, I would think family, friends, and loved ones leave you alone. And so you can focus on what you need to get focused on. So is that what happens?
Starting point is 01:11:14 I mean, you've already given everybody, okay, look here. I cut the phone off at such and such a time. Don't call me. Hey, somebody else. is going to handle what they need to do. Mama, you got the kids. Mama, you have everything.
Starting point is 01:11:28 Manager, you have everything over here. Now it's time to prepare my mind and really just lock in. Yeah, it gets like that. But at the same time, me as a protector, I'll still be, you know, worried and thinking about them. Yeah. Especially when they all come to Vegas
Starting point is 01:11:45 and, you know, they all partying or going out and things like that. and me, I'm like, what they're doing, where they're at? You know, all they're here, they're here, all right, make sure they're good, you know. So the worry and the bottom ain't going to never stop, but everything else is definitely cool to be, you know, in your thoughts at times. Like, I like to sit by myself and visualize the fight, you know, how it's going to happen and what I'm going to do if this happened, what I'm going to do if that happen, you know,
Starting point is 01:12:19 and just be in your own space. at times. Do you believe, a lot of people say, well, I don't believe Bud can win a decision. Bud is probably going to have to stop Canelo because Canello is the champion at the 168, and it's probably the likelihood of him getting a victory by decision in Vegas at this weight, probably not going to happen. I mean, what's your mindset by any means necessary? If it has to go to the car, it goes to the car, if there's a, if there's a,
Starting point is 01:12:51 a point in the fight where I feel I can sit down on some punches and get him up out of there. That's what I'm going to do. My thing is, I don't worry about what people say. You know, many people is worried about what other people are saying, oh, he's too small, or he can't take the punch, or he's not going to get a decision, or he's this, he's that. I don't worry about nothing of that. My job is to go out there and fight.
Starting point is 01:13:16 That's what I'm going to do. Come saying, I'm going to go out there and fight, and I'm going to fight my ass. off and, you know what I mean? And then whatever happens happens, you know, but I know one thing for sure, I'm not leaving without that autumn belts. Damn, so, hey, you're gonna be like a department store. You're gonna have by Selma, eight, nine, 10 belts
Starting point is 01:13:35 when you walk up out of them. I'm gonna be walking out with all of them. I mean, has your power, your footwork, your speed, has everything carried up despite the weight gain? Everything flows with you, right? You know what I mean? Like I said, just because you gain a little weight, doesn't mean that,
Starting point is 01:13:51 You know, you slower. People get faster when they get bigger. We're explosive, punch a little harder, things like that. So I'm not worried about, you know, foot speed or hand speed or anything like that. That's fine. But you also didn't have to go through that big weight cut to come all the way down to possibly 47. Because, you know, and I was telling people, I said, man, they said, man, you're in the ring wrestling with bud. I said, that little mofo's strong now.
Starting point is 01:14:21 Hey, you saw, hey, I said, you saw how you had me huffing and puffing. So don't, don't let the science fool you. I know you say, man, he only won't. I said, nah, he wasn't 147 that day. He said he was 147 that day. I don't know what he weighed, but it wasn't 47. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:14:40 But do you feel, do you feel comfortable? Do you feel like, I'm like, because sometimes you get a little weight, bud, you're like, damn, I don't feel comfortable. You feel comfortable carrying this weight around? I feel great. I feel great. You know, I'm just ready.
Starting point is 01:14:55 I'm just ready to go out there and do my thing. All right. Well, bud, we look. Wait, this is the last one we got to wrap, Ocho? Yeah. That one? Listen, I just want to make sure, do me a favor. I know this is not really returning to the fight.
Starting point is 01:15:09 I just want to make sure Andre Ward is in attendance because we got some unfinished. He's on the commentary. Leave him alone, man. I told you, he's going to whoop your butt, man. Just make, just make you live there. He's going to stop you. Not, but that's what I do, boy.
Starting point is 01:15:27 We come, we cut from, bud. Hey, hey, hey, remember you was talking stuff to that, that big dude. I forgot his name, the football player. James, yeah, Debo. Hey, I'm going to keep your ass. Debo is going to grab your little ass up. Hey, hey, bud, make sure you want to attend this. But make sure you there for that.
Starting point is 01:15:47 Hey, D. Bo was going to grab you like shit and grab me. All right. Who side you know, bud? Nobody's sorry. I'm just saying. Deep over is going to grab you like Shannon, grab me. Hey, man, listen, I got this. Just make sure you there when I whip them, just make sure you there.
Starting point is 01:16:07 And then Andre next. But I appreciate your time, man. Congratulations. Best of luck on the fight on Saturday night. We will be in attendance. And, hey, I want to be able to say, you know, what? I was in attendance when Bud Crawford shocked the world. Good luck and we'll, hey, we'll talk to you after the fight. Appreciate it. Bud Crawford. Yeah. It's always great having Bud. I mean,
Starting point is 01:16:31 anytime around, I mean, I did the first interview a couple of months ago and he's just like, like you've been knowing him. I mean, he makes you feel like you've been knowing him your entire life. It's great to have him, wishing the best of luck. You hear that?
