Starting point is 00:01:30 Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Presented by Capital One, founding partner of iHeart Women's Sports. What about council culture? Are there words? There's something that because and, you know, we talk about like what they could say back in the 80s and the 70s even on sitcoms, I mean the Jefferson and All that Archie Bunker all in the family. Yeah, but you can't talk like that now
Starting point is 00:01:56 No, how do you how do you navigate that Gary? Well, obviously I can't say the n-word Getting that I go the n-word um i thought you're getting that i go um but yeah i can't say that but i think live comedy shows you're fine and that's why they we don't want your cell phones out right because i think people go to shows with a level of expectation and if you don't meet that expectation they're disappointed right but some people want to hear the uncomfortable yeah you know and i'm like that i think you know but that's the thing like you gotta ask yourself is it worth it for me to stand on my two feet and say i'm gonna do this joke i don't care i say what i want is it worth it if you get the backlash because eventually it's gonna come and are you
Starting point is 00:02:39 have you created a strong enough fan base that cancel culture can't mess with you? Because there are people like Chappelle. He can't be canceled. Ricky Gervais. He cannot be canceled. Andrew Schultz cannot be canceled. I would think Shane Gillis right now. He can a cat can't be canceled. Kevin can.
Starting point is 00:02:58 Kevin's very corporate. Right. Kevin has to be careful what he says. You know what I mean? Yes. So that's what I'm saying. Like someone like Ken Chappelle, they don't have they don't have these corporate corporate deals. Kevin's got to be careful.
Starting point is 00:03:10 And I'm sure there's some things he wants to say. Right. But he ain't trying to mess up that check. Just like you. You don't defend black women. You know what I mean? I'm sure like Wrangler's about to call you. John Deere.
Starting point is 00:03:32 I ain't need to water on them. See, I should never open that can of worms. You don't, Shannon. I think you ought to go on a show next week. Whose show? I ain't telling you. How has comedy changed from when you first got in to what we see right now? We were at the mercy.
Starting point is 00:03:57 We needed somebody to put us on. So now, like I said, you can control your own shit. You know what I mean? I got a guy that goes and rolls me right now called the the the mailman he's a tiktok guy and he's he's not he didn't start as a stand-up he started as a social media guy right but he wants to be a stand-up so i tell you from cincinnati you know i like the hometown is like always good so i bring on the road now so we can um work his act out but there's no gatekeepers with him so to speak so he he couldn't he could have never did something like that years ago right and now like you don't need somebody's permission to
Starting point is 00:04:30 put a joke out man i i thought about that too i was like man you really we all knew those funny guys that never popped because for whatever reason they the the powers that be didn't put them on but you know so now you don't need you can't blame nobody else if you don't have a netflix special if you don't quote unquote get your turn why hasn't hollywood ever taken a chance on me take a chance on yourself you look at the comedians so where are you with these comedians now a lot there are a lot of comedians on social media they do their thing on ig and things like that and i was reading somebody with i forget who it was that says yeah doing doing a skit for like five minutes is entirely different than writing an entire set for 30 45 an hour right yeah facts it's a different muscle it's a
Starting point is 00:05:17 different muscle like it's it's like yeah to hit that cab as cat said to do it over and over and over and over and over it i don't look at it like an art because to me it comes so easy so when people like how you do that i go how you not do it right when people say i'm scared of public speaking i go for what that's a captive audience you know what i mean yeah so it's a different muscle i'm not never gonna knock somebody for like building a fan base and making money on the road because i've learned there's enough for all of us and i'd rather be cool with people and hopefully they bring me into a sketch or they have a show and they think of me you know i mean i'm i you got desi banks on yes we're doing real estate together wow you know what i mean if i if you might have went like that heck
Starting point is 00:06:02 he ain't he ain't funny right this hey now we got this i think we got this guy gene johnson he's a builder in atlanta i bought a house i wanted to flip it i got hold of him he told me he were no i called desi right i got this flip house man i saw you been flipping houses i was like who's your guy he gave me this guy gene johnson his name i called him he goes yeah i'll help you flip it and then now he brings us in he goes what you guys ever thought about doing something together like two comedians doing flip houses or airbnbs and we and we're we're gonna film it we don't know if anything comes of it but you might have i just went off on desi right he defends black women he does me too yeah hold up is. Is this true? You had a scrub joint.
Starting point is 00:06:46 Jesus. And you got in trouble for not tipping. How you been getting this information? People. That was the streets talking. Yeah. So. I mean, how you going to go in the club and look at cheeks and not pay?
Starting point is 00:06:58 I didn't know. I was 18. I'm living in D.C. Yeah. It was middle of the day. Somebody said, you know, you can see titties. We got a spot. You can see titt D.C. Yeah. It was middle of the day. Somebody said, you know, you can see titties. We got a spot.
Starting point is 00:07:08 You can see titties. I said, real titties? You know? I'm sheltered, man. I didn't have puberty until late. Right. I went to school with mostly white women. So I was a virgin until I was 19.
Starting point is 00:07:19 So I get to D.C., talk to the city. I said, where do you see titties? So they was like, okay. I took another guy's ID, another military guy's ID. And they, there was this one strip club in DC. Like if you were military, they didn't really look.
Starting point is 00:07:29 Right. They let you slide. So I got another guy's ID. They let me in. I sit down. I'm like the only dude in there. Right. The waitress keeps coming over. The only white dude.
Starting point is 00:07:38 Yeah. There was like nobody in this club. There was like 11 a.m. I got there early. So there's like one stripper and one waitress. And the stripper's really trying to dance for me hard because nobody else is there. And I'm literally like this. I'm right next to the stage, right?
Starting point is 00:07:53 The waitress comes in. You want something to drink? I'm good. You want something to drink? No, I'm good. One, I'm sketching you guys for my D again. Right. I said, I'm good.
Starting point is 00:08:00 So then the stripper, she's really going to town. I'm not stripping. I'm not tipping. I'm just looking. It's like not tipping. I'm just looking. It's like an hour. I bought no drinks. I haven't tipped. Oh, you ain't tipping and sipping.
Starting point is 00:08:11 You got to get up out of there. Literally, the way she's going like this. She goes, you want a drink? I said, no, I'm good. She goes, you just come look at free. I was like this. I'm out. I just got left.
Starting point is 00:08:21 I was like. She snapped on me, too. You just come look at free. I just got left. I was like... She snapped on me, too. You just come looking for your... I was like this. Actually, I did. That's really why I came. Are you a strip club connoisseur? No. I go, but I ain't a strip club connoisseur.
Starting point is 00:08:39 What's the best one you've been in? This is Atlanta. No. Shades. Ocho Rios, Jamaica. That was the wildest night I've ever seen a strip club in my whole life. Really? I did a bit on it in one of my specials about 10 years ago.
Starting point is 00:08:57 You said Ocho Rios? Ocho Rios. Yeah. Yeah. So it's called Shades. It's still there. Mm-hmm. It recently went viral.
Starting point is 00:09:04 They have a little person that comes out, dude. He'd be knocking him down. He's slanging. He's slanging like he normal. Right. Below his knees, I'm stuck. Literally. So I went there. I went here with my boys, two white dudes, three white dudes going to the strip club in Jamaica. What could go wrong? Right. And it's in the hills. Right. So what happened? So Tom Joyner has had the Tom Joyner cruise. I think he still does it. Right. But when you were a performer, they fly you in. You mean you only take the cruise half the time. So it's seven days. You're on for three days.
Starting point is 00:09:41 Right. So we were picking it up in Jamaica. So I flew in the night before. I got real cool with the locals. No, the guys at the resort that work there, the bartender. Right. So I got my two buddies, two white dudes. Right. When I get there, I got there like an hour after them. He's making out with some chick in the pool. I was like, dang, Brian, it ain't West no time. Right? Right. We go to dinner.
Starting point is 00:10:08 He's like, he's telling me, yeah, this girl, man, I got to meet her at the club on the resort. You know? He goes, he thinks it's going to pop off. Right. We eat dinner. We go to the club. She making out with a different dude on the dance floor. Now he's pissed.
Starting point is 00:10:20 He goes, man, what's up? I go, what? Yeah, she's at home home she's doing what dudes do right i was giving her all the respect in the world and then uh so now he's trying to leave right he's at mount maddie i'm going i'm going out tonight i said you can't leave the resort bro and now one of the little little bartender dudes he goes mr gary he cannot leave the resort it's not safe to go by himself my buddy's so lit and so mad we can't stop him right so he goes the dude's like dude i get off at 11 i'll take you guys out right that probably wasn't the smartest move either we get this he picks us up we got to
Starting point is 00:10:59 meet him at the end of the resort which is like a mile walk by the way to the road he picks us up in this little beat-up vehicle now he got three of his buddies in the car so there's literally like seven of us in this tiny car we go up this hill i'm like i don't know about this shades is different man you walk up it's like a steel door they slide it open and then you walk down some stairs we got in this just opened up you ever seen dust till dawn yeah it was like that you walk in i was like whoa it's a lot these strippers saw these three white dudes walk in we were fresh meat they started attacking right i told my boys i didn't drink i said give me all your money give me my i'm putting this pocket i go so nobody can rip us off or steal from us right
Starting point is 00:11:40 so we're sitting there you know watching lap dance stuff all of a sudden everything changed whistles blowing this little person came out the back i said what's he about to do yo he started laying a pipe on these strippers right in front of us come on man yo it's on the internet now it got posted like a couple years ago that look at this like on world star hip-hop right and i was like i told everybody that was true i told him it was true because nobody believed me he i mean he's knocking him down one after the other i ain't lying one girl spun him he's like yo oh he's inside her he spun come on on strike me down right now if i'm lying spun him i was like yo this is no level so then then my boy's like you know the dude the wild ones he's like yo man give me a hundred
Starting point is 00:12:32 dollars i said for what he goes there was like a seedy hotel next to shades he goes the girl's gonna take me over there i don't know if the girl was 70 and room was 30 or the room was 30 and the girl was 70 but i can't do a hundred 70 so i said yo no no no i said you can't do that tell her to meet you at the resort you're not going over there right and then the local guy that would drive me around he goes don't don't let him go they're gonna shake him down they said my jamaican accent is terrible by the way so he was like they're gonna shake him down either he's gonna go over there she's gonna milk him for more money or he's getting set up and they're gonna rob him right so i told him no so now he's mad at me cuss me out calls me
Starting point is 00:13:08 a block blocking bro you're blocking some white you're blocking bro you don't defend black women so um we're waiting now my the guy that drove us here yeah he had to park down the hill you gotta walk up this hill to get the shades he parks above the hill so now we're waiting now. The guy that drove us here, he had to park down the hill. You got to walk up this hill to get the shades. He parked above the hill, so now we're waiting on him. And it's like a 20-minute wait, and I see this dude scoping me out. I saw it.
Starting point is 00:13:32 He goes, he's looking at me, looking at me. He goes, hey, money man, money man, buy me and my friend some beers. And I go, I ain't got no money. I pointed at the club and go, all the girls took my money. He goes, nah nah You the money man Buy me and my friends some beers
Starting point is 00:13:47 It's getting scary now And I'm going Oh I'm starting to sweat Just then The dude pulled up with his car What is it? Patois? Is that Jamaican?
Starting point is 00:13:57 Patois? They start speaking that Patois He goes Okay You got your N word I got mine we're good let me go when i say that's all in my pocket we got back to the resort i gave it to the dude the driver right i said take it i swear god dude start crying he's like you don't have to do this i go dude you saved this tonight right take it it might have been like 500 bucks right i was like dude i don't want to take

You remember that? You were mad as a motherfucker. I was like, damn, Sandy, what are you going to do to little Mike?
Starting point is 00:16:37 You ain't have to be that damn mad. You got to take a joke. Because, see, you was reaching that level of fame. See, you got your football fame. You're a Hall of Famer, right? Yeah. But see, this fame is totally different. It's totally different.
Starting point is 00:16:49 Because you out there, but you wanted it, though. I didn't see this level of fame coming, LaVell. And I thought the thing was. What the fuck you talking about? Nah, not like that. Hold on, hold on, hold on. Hold on, man. What the fuck?
Starting point is 00:17:01 Why you do it then? No, but here's the thing. Like you said, you look at my career in the nfl right and i won super bowls i'm in the hall of fame but i'm 10 times right now and i've been retired two decades what i was then i didn't expect that well nigga you had a helmet on nobody know what the fuck ain't nobody see your name on the back of your journey you make a touchdown good job nigga now go and do another time this is different it is your face out there your muscles out there your outfit out there niggas gonna make jokes about it and the end of you in
Starting point is 00:17:43 the worst time to be famous though yeah because niggas do skits about niggas gonna make jokes about it And you in the worst time to be famous though Yeah Cause niggas do skits about Niggas did so many skits on your outfit Man they didn't cut me a check You should But the thing about what it does for you You know what it does for you You getting
Starting point is 00:17:57 Your shit is hot Everybody wanna be on that Yeah And you have to find You had coaches cuss you out You went up against some of the biggest linebackers right? But this is this the same shit It's just that you don't it's different nice words and in some little punk joking about you They can look at my head nigga these niggas kill my head
Starting point is 00:18:19 I can't even I gotta put a hat on and do a video on Instagram. Because this nigga, it would hurt my feelings. I was like, damn, my head fucked up. And I know my head fucked up because my son got my same head. When I cut his hair off, that nigga wore a hat for two years until his hair grew back. I said, this nigga does not like his head. Right. But I gradually, I'm a man, you know. None of these clowns can reach the level.
Starting point is 00:18:45 gradually i'm a man you know i ain't none of these clowns could reach the level that you you metamorphosize your career in so many different levels it ain't even the joke they joke about yeah nigga but look what i got bitch you walk around you so rich you got a little dog you carry with you nigga you that's that's white rich but see here the thing. It wasn't so much the joke that he said, it's who said it. Like, a lot of people say stuff, I ignore them. But see, Mike. Mike ain't shit. Mike a regular nigga. I knew Mike when he had just got out of the penitentiary, man.
Starting point is 00:19:17 Mike turned his life around. He the same nigga as you. Yeah. He the same nigga as you. And we had that conversation when we were in the indie. And I was glad we had that conversation. But were in the indie and i was glad we had a conversation but you know what laville i ain't look i ain't no luck of saying i understand what i know i understand your feelings yes no i hey man to man head you know hot head hot head it
Starting point is 00:19:38 goes without saying i mean you've been fighting all your life nigga say something that you hey nigga what you jumping on me? All the money you got. But the thing about it, when Mike ever said it, most motherfuckers watched you. They watched Cat Williams go off on everybody, and you sat there and ate all that shit up. But they talking about saying it. Well, they got mad at me.
Starting point is 00:19:57 Yeah, of course, nigga, because you out there letting them say earthquake can't read. I mean, what I was going to say. I ain't gave him a script so i don't know if he cared or not you just said interview over i'm getting out of here you just did like that but you was sitting back saying oh nigga we about to get this shit quake quake first of all quake my guy like i said i some guys i know like i know quake quake and i have conversation i talked to quake quake and i have gone to dinner together. But a lot of the people that he mentioned, I felt
Starting point is 00:20:25 that he was retorting what they said. Ricky said that he had the role of Money Mike, and he was saying that's great. I asked, said, did he steal the joke? Because that was what was reported. Sands said he didn't, Rick, and Cassidy. But the nigga had receipts. They showed the same joke. And this is the thing man this is what
Starting point is 00:20:48 this is in the defense of said he from my hometown i love said and uh i mean dude you know sometimes you do a joke and you feel it i ain't never told no i don't have to get no joke because my life is it's hilarious right I can write shit. I can go up and talk about, I elaborate on a comedian's joke that he did on stage. Like Chris Tucker was on stage last night at the Sandbag Show. And I said, boy, he did talk about he had to ride in a coach because he ain't got the money no more. He said he had his son pull out a knife to keep us safe back here. You know, because he was scared.
Starting point is 00:21:23 And I said, ooh, I wish I could have went up behind him because i would have rolled off that joke i said yeah i was on that same plane with chris tucker i was sitting in first class i got a lot of miles and i and i looked behind the curtain i said hey chris good to see you nigga i'm watching rush hour on the movie y'all don't get movies back there but you did a real good job with that. That's Chuck the Curtain. Let me eat, nigga. But comedy is not yours to own. Right. It's yours to create. Right.
Starting point is 00:21:54 Just like I tell you. I said, you can do them people pick on your ass. And sometimes you should do what you kill them with is laughing at some of that shit. Because you be like, yeah, whatever, nigga. I look good in my shit you know and and and the funny thing about it i mean even if uh if these guys like like i was gonna say what mike hell was joking about that mean mike ellis watching your shit that's the cool thing motherfuckers watching you right they watch you good you know because you on tv something has to make them want to watch you
Starting point is 00:22:24 and like everybody said like I even said I wish that nigga Cat would have said something about me so I could sell some tickets I think everybody wanted Cat to say something about him I mean after a while people was like why ain't nobody retaliating I said why it's made him famous Michael Blacks ain't never been
Starting point is 00:22:41 that damn famous he ain't wrote a new joke since 73 see now he gonna come at me them famous. Michael Blackson ain't never been that damn famous. He ain't wrote a news joke since 73. See, now he gonna come at me cause you said that on my platform. I told him that. I don't give a fuck if he say, that's my, I'm cool with Michael Blackson.
Starting point is 00:22:57 He don't like me cause I go, I'm John, we John, we talk about, I mean, dude. But why they get upset at me though? I don't know. Do you think they get upset? You afraid of Michael Blackson? No I mean, dude. But why they get upset at me, though? I don't know. Do you think they get upset? You afraid of Michael Black? No.
Starting point is 00:23:09 Man, stop it. Come on, man. You ain't never... No, but I'm saying they were upset at me. He's afraid he's going to hit you with a blow dart? Come in here with a spear in the bone and know, what did you say? Why you let them talk about my people?
Starting point is 00:23:26 That nigga ain't even whole African That they've been in Philly most of the life never fucking change his axis so damn fair He's worked for us air when it was you and ever like Mike perpetrated and they can scare the elephants Just went back to Africa they ain't even recognizing him i mean he he my he my friend but i joke about it i mean he better we've been around for years i mean and mike one of them guys that he take it on the chin you know he he you look at his his uh page people be killing him yeah and uh but he eat it up. Right. You know, he is smart enough to know that's how, you know, that's why I respect him because he's still out here eating. Right.
Starting point is 00:24:12 Because he take it and go and get it. He don't let nobody hold you back. And some people don't talk about it. I don't even like talk about none of these other communities. They don't never say shit about me. And you know who the fuck I am. Right. Everybody in this motherfucking gang know who the fuck I am. But if you're trying to play like you know i mean you can't
Starting point is 00:24:28 deny i'm undeniable right and i ain't talking like ricky gay you love ricky say man they tried to get me to follow lavelle man ricky smiley black ass nigga that nigga ain't shit always throwing his life in my face ricky smiley god, you need to come out on my boat. Fuck your boat, nigga. I always throw your little pussy ass boat in my life. You know, he always want to come out there. I don't want to be on no rich nigga boat. Hold me out there, then I'm working for you. Hey, man, get that, tie that rope off.
Starting point is 00:24:56 I'm like, nigga, I don't work for you, nigga. You ate up all the snacks. You out here now. I can't get back, and I don't swim good. I float good, but I don't swim good. I seen you one time good i seen one time you snapped what you got the camera on for oh that's what i got the dog at yeah i'm at international airport nobody knows that i'm coming i'm like so it he might have been looking for someone else he was just so random no no no no no no no no no no no he knew your ass was coming he did how you think think motherfucking TMZ and all that?
Starting point is 00:25:25 But here's the thing, Lavelle. I was going to meet the lady because she was bringing the dog. I didn't, I wasn't going to catch the flight. I was just showing up. How many muscle-bying niggas with sweaters on? Walking in,
Starting point is 00:25:41 looking like you, nigga. They see you, you get out of the car. You come out of the car. You got to get out and stretch. I'm not sure. You get out there. Then you got a little puppy in your hand. What kind of dog was it?
Starting point is 00:25:55 Pomeranian. Oh, man. What you got? You like little dogs? I do. You got a big dog? I do. What kind of dog you got?
Starting point is 00:26:00 Borbo. Oh, yeah. You got one of them African masters. South African masters, yeah. Oh, man. I seen one of them. I was getting somean masters yeah man i seen one of them i was getting some weed at the weed house and i mean that's some bitch dude like this i mean oh my god my little year old he's about 175 man i want one of them uh kangol okay they kill wolves
Starting point is 00:26:19 yeah but but yeah that's a nice dog they're good lions. Oh, yeah. They're great. I love it. He's smart. He's smart, too. Very. And it's good you got the little dog. Yeah. Because see, people don't know this about animals. You get your little dog for the bark. You get your big dog for the bite.
Starting point is 00:26:37 Yeah. You understand? And people don't know that. See that little dog there? Oh, I want to fuck that little dog. But they come in that fucking house. Oh, the big one. That little dog warned the big dog, and he warned you. you yes oh the big way i ain't worried about nobody coming on
Starting point is 00:26:49 the big one yeah you that's your dog yeah oh i thought you got there for some no i had three actually i had i've had uh three i got three i had three little dogs i had to put two of them down just put one down a week ago okay pomeranian is a cool dog. I love Pomeranian. That Pomeranian cost me $1,800. Yeah, he was. My son is sitting over there right now. When he was in the third grade, we was at the house. I tell you, it's a crazy story. We was at the house.
Starting point is 00:27:15 I'm in my office, you know, working. I was on Tom Joyner's show, so I was writing my script. So I'm in my office. My son come in. There's a dog in the garage. There's a dog in the garage. I'm thinking it's a pit bull. I'm trying to keep quiet because
Starting point is 00:27:27 I said, get in the house, boy. You know, and I said, he left the door open. He in the house. I was like, shit. I'm like, oh, God. My wife was like, boo, boo, you got to go check this dog that's in the house. Go see what it is. I'm like, God damn, now I got to be a man.
Starting point is 00:27:44 I got to be a man. gotta be a man i gotta be daddy i don't want to get bit for my damn family like yeah one time a squirrel got in the house and his squirrel my day up because squirrel squirrels move like you got to rest you know what i'm saying you don't know how to you're not attacking you don't know that they're gonna run you're gonna snap on you. And I said, all right, we just left the door open. He finally left. And then he's looking in the window at me like, yeah, nigga, I'll be back.
Starting point is 00:28:13 But back to this dog story. With this dog, he was in the house. And I'm freaking like, man, it's a pit bull. I'm coming in there with a bat. I had a wiffle ball bat. I didn't even have a good bat. I come, where you at, at dog i'm talking shit coming around the corner this little pussy ass pomeranian little pup look like a big old house shoe just walking around how you know he's
Starting point is 00:28:34 stupid he didn't walk around i was like what is it come here little pussy ass dog i said boy what you running from the dog all of a sudden circle, they fell in love with the dog. They started, they went and got a cage for the damn dog. They didn't even, when black people get a dog, they don't give a fuck who the owner was. They didn't even look at his license. They just say, it's my dog now. God brought him in the house. He got a dog.
Starting point is 00:28:59 He got a cage. Feed him my roast beef. Yeah. I mean, and they named him, changed his name. I said, he got a license. I'm sure he got a license. He loved somebody. So I put it on Neighborhood, you know, to say,
Starting point is 00:29:13 I took a picture. He's a sweet dog. If somebody lost their dog, we found them. You're welcome to come and get them. So we put them in the backyard. And whoever the lousy bastard was came over our house, took them out the damn gate. Didn't even say thank you for finding the damn dog.
Starting point is 00:29:31 And he came home and saw that dog was gone. This sucker cried the biggest damn tears. I love him. Nigga, you just met him. You just been around him about two hours. He was like, I was like, oh, man. I was sitting up over here and me and my wife was going to this retreat We and I had it. I said we'll take you get a dog on Thursday, right? We wouldn't get a dog. I thought it gonna be about two and we welcome them dogs like Gucci store. Yeah
Starting point is 00:30:00 I I had to start looking at their price. I said, come here, boy. Let me see your price. I said, $1,500. Get your fucking ass back in there. I was like, shit, these dogs don't even weigh 30 pounds. And they was 18. And he picked the laziest son of a bitch we got. That dog done cost me more money than he did. He ain't protect us from shit. He almost killed me twice.
Starting point is 00:30:21 Walking down the steps because he be under my feet. Damn dog. He's a lobster obstacle. Lousy asshole. I read what you said. When Cat said what he said on the show, that a lot of these people should not have responded because
Starting point is 00:30:37 it makes them look guilty. You still stand by that? Yeah. Of course you do. But don't you have the right to defend yourself? Because here, it's a double-edged sword. Well, if you defend yourself, what you defend yourself against? Let Yeah, yeah, yeah. Of course you do. But don't you have the right to defend yourself? Because here, it's a double-edged sword. Well, if you defend yourself, would you defend yourself again? Let me ask you a question.
Starting point is 00:30:50 If I don't say anything, they say, well, he's guilty. If I do say something, they say, hit dog holler. So how do I win? Or do I win
Starting point is 00:30:58 or should I not even try to win this situation? You win by going on stage and blowing that motherfucker up up doing your thing keep on being successful and keep on moving on with your life just like earthquake did earthquake on unfrosted they said he couldn't read that in a movie some somebody read it to him there you go back i'm just saying they said he couldn't read he got a radio show that he's been
Starting point is 00:31:24 on all this time so when they people say he couldn't read. He ain't got a radio show that he's been on all this time. So when they people say he learned to read somewhere. Right. I like this nigga was in the Air Force. And so, I mean, people are going to say, you know, but my thing is, like I said, I think, like I said, you look guilty. You know, because, I mean, because what it does is right. Look at this. Y'all talking about the
Starting point is 00:31:45 kenny lamar beef and all that shit they they keep going back and forth saying this most ridiculous and horrifying things about each other but my whole thing you saying this shit about this nigga so you knew this about this motherfucker all this time and you ain't reported that to the police you know what i'm saying you was just as guilty as he is. So now you want to bust him out like it's going to make it bad? No. That makes you look as bad as him. You say he a pedophile. Okay, he a pedophile. But you knew this and you
Starting point is 00:32:15 risked these kids' lives because you want to say it in a rap battle? You know? That's all I'm saying. That's all I'm saying. When you... But if it ain't true, you know, you don't have saying right that's all i'm saying when you but but but if it ain't true you know you don't have to regurgitate it and keep on right off it but if you say i'm better about nigga i'm gonna say motherfucker i ain't never said that i'm gonna come i'm gonna walk out fuck all that nigga we gotta go we gotta go whoa whoa you just told me that when mike m said
Starting point is 00:32:40 that about me i should have just laughed it off you said you was a pedophile no it's the same thing a straight man don't want to be called gay well you knew you wasn't gay no but he knew he Mike M said that about me, I should have just laughed it off. You said you was a pedophile? No. It's the same thing. A straight man don't want to be called gay. Well, you knew you wasn't gay. No, but he knew he not a pedophile. So what's the difference? You know you not a pedophile. No, no, no, no, no, no.
Starting point is 00:32:52 I said, no, no, no, no, no, no. Hold on, hold on. Okay. Hold on. I mean, first of all, I would have never thought your ass was gay because it wouldn't look right on you. If I see your ass with a blind wig on, I'm going to smack shit out of you, nigga. it wouldn't look right on you. If I see your ass with a blind wig on,
Starting point is 00:33:06 I'm going to smack shit out of you, nigga. I don't care how strong you is. Get your funky ass back over and be a man, nigga. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:33:11 You know, but that was some shit talking. But when he said a pedophile, that's different. Gay, gay, you ain't hurt nobody.
Starting point is 00:33:20 You ain't, gay is gay. If you was gay, you own up to it. That shit is normal now but i don't look i'm a straight man i know you are and i'm from the south and i don't don't try to emasculate me because i don't play them game all i'm gonna say is okay why so only way they can emasculate you if you pull your pants down smack you on your ass no no that don't they don't they don't want
Starting point is 00:33:41 but that's all i'm saying though lavelle of all so all the things you can say what shannon talked with a list like you said man i saw him talking on tv he's spraying everybody all over the place you go to that yeah i did no i didn't talk about you no no but go to gay okay yeah i mean it was a it's a stretch because i don't i seen you got kids yeah i mean and people look there are a lot of people there look at no i don't got no problem with nobody else whatever about whatever letter you want to use in the alphabet that's you that's your life i don't judge nobody i would i i would i would just never believe you gay that's the thing so i when he said it i would just be laughing.
Starting point is 00:34:26 Only reason he said it was because you had the purse on your neck. That's it. No, he said that before I had the purse. Before you had the purse? Yeah, I had the purse. I'm going to wear the purse again. I ain't getting rid of my purse. It's a lot of motherfuckers with the man back. Man, you know how long I had to wait to get on that list of
Starting point is 00:34:41 nerdmans? You can't walk in this door and get no nerdmans. Man, please. Man, I waited seven months. Well, you act like white folks. I to wait to get on that list of Hermes? You can't walk in this door and get no Hermes. Man, please. Man, I waited seven months. Well, you act like white folks. I'm going to get it. You live in laws like that. I got a little bit of money.
Starting point is 00:34:52 I ain't got no money like that. I ain't got no money like you. Shit. You got a Hermes. Nigga, I got a two-me wallet. Hey, if I show this motherfucker, you're going to be laughing at me. Look, look, look. Right.
Starting point is 00:35:06 Look, you can pick your battles. Right. Okay. That's what I'm supposed to say. You have every right to defend it if you want to. But I think you walk in with bad business. That'll stop all that punk ass shit. Mm-mm.
Starting point is 00:35:23 Or do a sex tape i ain't gonna watch it i mean they might feel me you got the crew you're right welcome to club seiji we're doing a little something different tonight. Watch this, Mike Ips. No, you know. But no, but it... I mean, I'm sure if you felt that way, you had a right to say it.
Starting point is 00:35:54 Yeah. I can't tell a man not to do it. Mm-hmm. But I know if you do it... Oh, they're going to start another one.
Starting point is 00:36:04 Yeah, yeah. It's going to be a wildfire because it's so weird about like you said hit dog holler cry baby cry baby if you say something and everybody go oh Mike must be right you know whatever you can't
Starting point is 00:36:17 please people you beating their ass and it's still you know gay ass nigga beat the shit out of me you understand what I'm saying? You understand? You're like, man, that's enough. You know, but it just goes in the stuff. And trust me, man.
Starting point is 00:36:34 I mean, trust me. I got mad money. Talk about my head. Call me fat. Talk about this. Talk about that. And I be just like, man man i don't even waste my energy no more okay sometimes i i get mad about it but i you know i talk to jesus i said jesus
Starting point is 00:36:54 help me get out get this shit out of my system because because because when you do that it really goes away and so your god just elevates you yeah because i'm gonna guarantee you something about me you talk about me but they say hey lavelle croft was on club shay shay nigga what the fuck you doing you know what i'm saying lavelle croft yeah yeah lavelle croft on that motherfucker you know nigga don't tune in might not go viral as cat shit i ain't worried about that because i mean i i didn't do it for that i see amanda seal came on and she she had her moment on here i don't i don't get into that i'm. I don't even put nobody. I mess with Mike Blackson.

Starting point is 00:39:27 1100 episodes in the catalog listen to the i am rapaport stereo podcast on the iheart radio app apple podcast or wherever you get your podcasts and a lot of people talk about um you know keenan and i as far as like the split between the keenan and kel show this is where it started and i think that uh even keenan didn't really know either what was going on. Right. Because I didn't share what was going on with me and the head writer of the show when that happened and what was going on. And I didn't trust anybody at that moment either. Yeah. And I remember the head writer was Dash Snyder. That's what I was talking about, who who wrote on the show at that time. He was also doing a movie.
Starting point is 00:40:11 I believe it was Liar Liar. Okay, yeah. With Amanda. With Amanda. Not Liar Liar. It was, oh, man. I'm trying to remember the name of it. It wasn't Liar Liar.
Starting point is 00:40:20 But it was Amanda Bynes was supposed to be. It was in the movie. Yes. Yeah, and it was about a kid that lies and all that stuff like that but they wanted me to actually be in that movie at first
Starting point is 00:40:30 you know and I was like yo we should put Keenan in it that would be dope to put Keenan in it and we both do that because we had a three picture deal at Paramount
Starting point is 00:40:37 when we were doing that but they decided that you know they didn't want they didn't do the other movies we just did Good Burger
Starting point is 00:40:44 but I was doing Mystery Man so they were like yo you should be on that and I was like oh yeah but let's put in and they were like nah I think this is just be with you and I'm like no but I I feel like you know we got the show let's do it and also to the writers the same right I had to fallen out with you know what I mean that's in the room and so I'm just like I you know I'm going to do that right and I remember I left out of the room and you know what i mean that's in the room and so i'm just like all right you know i mean i want to do that right and i remember i left out of the room uh and you know all these producers excited about doing this movie right and i remember i left out of that room that situation and then i saw uh kenan and then i saw nick and they were like yeah we heard about that meeting they just
Starting point is 00:41:19 started laughing right and for me uh i was just i felt like, yo, I was in there fighting for you. You know what I mean? And that kind of hurt at that moment. Think about me was that I didn't. Relationship is very important. And you need to let people know how you feel. At that time, I was really wasn't doing that. Right. There was a trusting. You know what I mean? I had already been through death, you know, within my family in Chicago. And all these things were going on at this point uh both of my uncles was murdered uh I had a friend that was murdered that we talked about all this happened around the same time and so there wasn't any uh no I wasn't seeing any therapist or anything of that nature I was just working constantly with working on the show um and within doing that and then at that time too
Starting point is 00:42:06 i ended up uh marrying uh my ex-wife you know uh because we had another job we had the baby right we had the abortion but then we had a baby and uh she ended up telling me that the baby that was aborted wasn't mine and so within that process, you are immediately married within the lie already. Yeah. You know what I'm saying? So the marriage was never the same after that, was it?
Starting point is 00:42:33 No, this is at the beginning. You know what I'm saying? This is right at the beginning. And so within that process... She probably should have kept that to herself. Well, you know, I'm glad she didn't.
Starting point is 00:42:44 And so within that process with that being known it was just like yo and now i'm on tv oh let's see i'm still on tv all this thing and i don't have time to really process that and she almost you know with even in being you know the pregnancy uh she almost died within the pregnancy so that was a hard time too right and i remember the uh some of the writers coming to the set to the hospital and they were like bringing presents and I'm thinking like oh yeah cool thank you and then they were like yo when can you be back on set and it was just like yeah you see what I'm dealing with yeah we'll see what I'm dealing with but you know no no shout out to you know no no
Starting point is 00:43:19 shade to them they were just they were doing what they were told as far as a job to see if Kel can get be back on set um and I was the one that you know ended up getting someone pregnant you know around that time but uh I'm just setting up so you understand what was really going on right when we get to 2004 you know what I mean in that in that process so uh and now knowing that this you know the kid isn't you know is mine and then now uh then now leaving the show on Nickelodeon and then I had Mystery Man, this big show, and I'm thinking like, oh, yeah, that's going to be it. You know what I mean? And learning within that process, too, where it was like, hey, well, no, I don't want to renew on all that. Kenny and Nickel, I'm good. You know what I'm saying? And I already know what's going on as far as what's happening within this realm of what's going on with the show behind the scenes and what's going
Starting point is 00:44:09 on with me and uh i was just like yo i'm ready to leave anyway and then mystery man didn't do as well as we thought as we thought it was going to do uh within that process and then just navigating uh through that now being a father and here's the thing about it is that the reason I didn't have anybody relate to because I was the first one out of the entire cast to be married, to have a house, you know, have kids. And Kenan, Nick, none of them could relate to that. They were still being kids. And also, too, there was this process of i got it all together i already know what i'm doing you know what i mean and that's what i was doing you know what i mean to me it was like i gotta i gotta i can handle this i can handle this no you couldn't no you you you can't handle this
Starting point is 00:44:55 within the start because you're really going through something that is really deep and you need to let people know and let people know how you feel and let people know what's on your heart what's really going on. But I kept it in. It was like I can handle this. Yeah. You mentioned a lot of some of the kids, actors and actresses that you around life had gotten so much so overbearing that they could didn't feel they could go on. so overbearing that they couldn't didn't feel they could go on yeah you see you mentioned amanda bines and you see her in conservatorship and you see her dealing with her issues how difficult is that for you knowing what you went through yeah and seeing her go through something very similar um it's deep i mean um when i was at the um sun hotel in can, where I was going to end my life at that moment, on the other side of a balcony, Amanda was there. Amanda was shooting a show, a movie where she played a guy, that movie.
Starting point is 00:45:56 And Keenan was in town, too, as well. We hadn't talked in a while. He was doing Snakes on the Plane. Okay. And no one knew that I was going through with my ex. We had had very toxic relationship you know what i mean as you can imagine from the start of it all it's hard to reveal something after a lie yeah bro if it was founded on a lie it's gonna fall eventually yeah
Starting point is 00:46:17 exactly exactly and it went from bad to worse you know with the things that were being revealed you know um and it was a lot you know it was other times uh she had gotten pregnant other things and it just got to a point she had gotten pregnant again while y'all were together yeah and it wasn't you not with me oh come on it wasn't me it was and you stuck around yeah i stuck around i stuck around but here's the thing here's the thing uh these were things that were being revealed, you know. She telling you this. No, no, no.
Starting point is 00:46:48 How do you find this out? I want to know how you found this out. You read a letter you got through the phone? Okay. All right. So how that one went, there was a thing where we weren't having sex anymore and we weren't doing anything anymore. No, you weren't having sex.. And we weren't doing anything anymore. No, you weren't having sex.
Starting point is 00:47:06 Clearly, she was. Yeah, it's just because of we knew, I knew what was going on. Right. And I was like, yo, what is even happening? You're not coming home. You're not doing all these different things. And y'all married. She's not coming home.
Starting point is 00:47:20 Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. But then this was, you know, back then. Yeah. We praying for her now. It's all good. Yeah. But this was the process of what I was going man. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. But then this was, you know, back then. Yeah. We praying for her now. It's all good. Yeah. But this was the process of what I was going through. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:47:29 And so now as this is going on, there was a time to get some more soda. Now I need something stronger than soda, Cal. You telling me that right here. Go ahead, brother. I mean, you had one. You aborted that, but that wasn't yours. She told you. You didn't know.
Starting point is 00:47:43 You had one of your own. Yeah. Well, yeah. one you're bored of that but that wasn't yours she told you you didn't know you had one of your own and she yeah well yeah there was a there was a situation uh where there was a guy you know and um i had a feeling you know what i mean that she was talking to somebody it was one of her friends that used to come over right and you know i was working a lot you know what i mean so it's one of one of those situations and so uh i was dropping off the kids you know and you know i didn't go to work and you know how i go and so one day i decided where i was like yeah i'm gonna take the car and just kind of like go searching where she might be because she don't mean come home and so uh i got in the whip went driving around saw her whip looked different you know and uh i saw it and i said the hotel was like
Starting point is 00:48:26 yo okay this is a car hotel i go to the lobby you know what i mean to go walk into the lobby uh turns out dude just go walking down the lobby about to go to the car you know my car and then she was driving you know what i mean i'm like oh okay what's up take me upstairs take me let's go to the elevator let's go together. You know what I mean? And he's like, oh, okay, cool. You know what I mean? We go up, I'm not, we don't need to fight, let's go.
Starting point is 00:48:50 Yeah. Because I already know what it is. Right. So we go up, of course she's surprised. Oh, you know, we're within the room. And, you know, we walk in. You know, I walk in there and I'm just like, hey, okay, so this is what's going on. Okay, cool.
Starting point is 00:49:03 You know what I mean? All right, and this is what you're doing? Okay, so, out because i'm like i'm not about to fight over no she already made a decision you already been we'd have been through it did she like come out and let me let me explain yeah yeah what did that explain offer without explanation explain uh i'll go to the car uh after i went to the car then there was this i was like yo i need to go back and uh i went back because now i was like well i felt disrespected so now i need to go do something so then i'm going back up there cops came everybody came up at that point and i remember this cop told me uh he said hey yo um, I've seen this type of woman, this situation.
Starting point is 00:49:48 You need to get out of this situation. You know what I mean? You need to get out of this situation. Like, you know, like a goofy still stayed around. You know what I mean? He said, we was trying to make it work for the kids. You know what I mean? Trying to make it work for the kids.
Starting point is 00:50:00 But it just wasn't working out. You know what I mean? Trying to make it work. And she ended up getting pregnant by another guy. Now, how that situation happened was that I was at the hospital. She had a sickle cell trait. So she ended up, you know, I'm thinking it's that. We go in there and the doctor comes in and says, yeah, so you lost the baby.
Starting point is 00:50:22 And I was just like, hey, yo, what? You lost the baby. And I'm like hey yo what you lost the lost the baby and i'm like oh i know that's not mine and so i lost the baby and it just and i'm like okay so she was pregnant at that time and this was just like what was going on you know what i mean yeah yeah within the relationship that was rough but then it's also doing movies doing tv shows doing all these things as this is going on not really telling anybody anybody. I wasn't telling my parents, telling my family what was going on. You know, so now all these situations are happening. And I get to the point where I'm at, you know, 2004 up there.
Starting point is 00:50:57 And the thing about it is, is that I would drink, you know, to get out of, you know, emotional, all this mind because it was just kind of like, you know, making people laugh and doing all these things. But then also this is going on, too, as well. You know what I mean? And so I got to the point where I'm about to do this. And the reason I did that was because I went to Canada to do this movie and we had already the relationship was just toxic at that point. and we had already the relationship was just toxic at that point so now i'm i'm here and i get a phone call and she's this this guy you know that she wants to be with and i was just like okay yeah yeah y'all need to be together you know what i mean like let's do this but then i'm also dealing
Starting point is 00:51:37 with the embarrassment of all of this situation what's going on i don't want people to know what i'm going through all this situation and I just felt like at that point it needs to be a reset button just because I looked at my parents and how beautiful their relationship was and how this relationship was not being that at all and how what I thought marriage would be wasn't that at all and then even just the navigation of this industry as well and what was going on and i just wanted to hit off button at that point and i felt like that was the the answer right i tell people um you know i heard something tell me hey yo girl get into a room
Starting point is 00:52:17 lock the door um and get off this balcony i know that was god now but at that time i you know i said it was a person but i know it was God that told me to do that. And I did that and went and did work. And then from that, changing my life around, where it's to the point where now it's like really living life for me and understanding that. Kel, even though I'm listening to you talk, and it's a very traumatic experience, and I'm sorry that you had to experience that but it seems to me no matter how chaotic it was in your personal life it was the acting that kept you going well I would say this because even with the process of me and Kenan uh he kind of just um and I don't think he knows that we did have a conversation about this but he didn't know any of this either he didn't know all these things were going on in my life until recently when I was able to talk to him about it.
Starting point is 00:53:08 And the thing about it is, is that on that side of work, when it was a thing of, you know, my talent being stolen by this writer, this yelling by this writer, all these different things, the process of that and work and all how that was um and navigating that he was also managed by the same company that the writer was in and so within that it was like oh y'all all together so i couldn't trust anybody and where i was from you know uh with having people uh you know die within my life that were in Chicago. I'm going through turmoil and a toxic relationship. And then I'm also having problems within the workplace as well.
Starting point is 00:53:56 That was a gumbo of just like, yo, you know what I mean? Of what was going on. And that's when I talk about like with Robin Williams, when I was saying like, you know, smiling through everything and making other people laugh. You never know what somebody else might be going through at that time. And Keenan was going through his own process as well and things that he was going through. But we both weren't sharing. And this is what I talk about with relationship and letting people know what's on your heart and letting people know what you might be dealing with. Because if you don't let people know, they don't know.
Starting point is 00:54:22 And you just deal with that. That's a great place for the devil to just play with you you know what I mean within that process and I had to really understand that you know what I mean and so even with Amanda I understood you know what she was going through everybody has their own journey of what they're going through in life everybody's journey is different and this is this is my journey and process of you audition for Saturday Night Live. Yeah Keenan audition for Saturday Night Live. Yeah. Yeah, and I guess you guys are additional
Starting point is 00:54:53 Very simple the same role. Yeah Losing I mean you guys had played all these was in these these sketch comedies and did these be shows together. Yeah Did that strain your relationship to lose that audition to him no i i think that i've explained it uh what really happened you know what i mean there was this uh divide of me you all don't understand what i'm dealing with through the process of all the things i'm dealing with right or even with these Producers in the writer, you know what I mean? What's going on? And it's for them. It just looked like yo, Kel is just you know doing his own thing He's frustrated and he doesn't know it and that that wasn't what it was I had my own personal things that I was dealing with when we got on Saturday live now you talk about this is
Starting point is 00:55:40 Years and we hadn't spoken a while, right? And it was a little head you guys not spoken prior to Saturday night live. Not at all. Yeah, we hadn't spoken a while right and it was a lot so had you guys not spoken prior to saturday night live not at all yeah we hadn't spoken oh yeah we hadn't spoken and so that's the thing about it it's like um there was this when i talk about the isolation and when i talk about work see when people watch us on television they're thinking like oh this is brothers you know what i mean they hang out all the time but this is a this is a job. Yeah, you know what I mean? So when it ended we are adults, you know what I mean? So I always explain like this there's there's three generations of all that like we were 94 to 2000 then it came back around
Starting point is 00:56:18 2005 to 2010 And we weren't on that process of that show and then we brought it back in 2019 Right and that went for only like two seasons right and so you got to kind of look at like us being adults And navigating our own things throughout life, and we hadn't talked in a long time and when shine our life came along I was going through probably the you know the worst time of my life. You know what I mean like you're talking about from probably the you know the worst time of my life you know what i mean like you're talking about from 97 98 you know to now it's uh 2004 you know what i mean like when he gets on the show around that time and we go to audition i didn't know keenan was gonna be there you know what i mean and there was a lot of d ray was there uh jb smooth a lot of different other you know actors
Starting point is 00:57:04 i think i talk about this like people look at usB. Smooth a lot of different other you know actors and I think I talk about this like people look at us like new addition you grew up with us you know what I mean so there's this love there and so they felt like it was like this this fight but it wasn't it was just a thing of oh you here too okay let's audition and for me it was like I need this I gotta get this job I got kids on I want to get this job make sure this happened i'm thinking in that process and i remember when i got on stage i did original characters i had already been doing my dvd stuff so i remember i auditioned with michael jackson if he was allergic to trees and so i did a whole thing when he was sneezing and that's how he came
Starting point is 00:57:42 up with the god i did that on stage, but it was very physical. You know what I mean? And I remember that. And I was drinking at the time, too, when I did it. So I remember I was just, I got on stage, I was just going. And then what was already happening in my life at that point already with all the things was going on. And, you know, I didn't get the audition, which is fine, though, because there's so
Starting point is 00:58:03 many other comedians that didn't, you know, on Saturday Night Live. And I don't look at it as like I was upsetting my boy. And that wasn't what it was. But what really was going on was what was happening behind the scenes. You know what was going on where we just didn't talk. You know, how did it feel to finally be reunited with Kenan? Yeah. What, years later, as far as like with Goodberg?
Starting point is 00:58:23 Which is funny. With Kenan? Yeah. What, years later as far as like with Goodberg? Yes. Which is funny. It was, I want to say, I was on Game Shakers. It was a show on Nickelodeon that I went back on. And now here's the process of this.
Starting point is 00:58:36 The same writer, you know, this was his show. Right. Now he was doing a new show. right now he was doing a new show prior to this i was invited to um to kids choice awards to give him an award and with all the other actors and knowing the past of us buttonheads right and knowing to the conversations that he had with other people as far as like forget kale i don't work with kale this type of thing type person he is right right and i remember thinking now i'm the man of like um a man of faith around this time and i'm just like in the process of things that i've went through i was like forgiveness is a serious thing you know what i mean and i was just like
Starting point is 00:59:19 well forgive and also too i want the other producers to know like yeah i'm not this is not a thing i'm not holding any grudges. I'm not holding any grudges. So they were surprised. I said, okay, yeah, I'll do it. So I went on stage and I did that. That ended up being where now all the producers are like, yo, Kel, he's cool with Nick Lowe. He's cool with us.
Starting point is 00:59:37 Right. So then they were just like, okay, cool. And then they had me audition to be on Game Shakers, the show. Part of me was like, well, you know, y'all know what I can do, this type of thing. But I was like, I'm going to audition and do my thing. And so I auditioned, been on the show, and got on that show. When I got on that show, he actually was the one who said, hey, yo, you and Kenan, y'all should reach out. And he gave me Kenan's number.
Starting point is 01:00:02 You know what I mean? And we actually reached out to one another and me and Kenan had a I want to say a one hour conversation of us just talking on the phone and me telling a little bit about my life of what I had went through and him sharing too but not all the way sharing but him just like shocked by what was really going on behind the scenes and all that I had dealt with and what was going on. And that was good for us to have that conversation as adults, to have that hour conversation and talk to one another. Then right after that, we did
Starting point is 01:00:36 Fallon, where we got together to do the Good Burger. Right. Yeah, together. And within that process, though, which was really deep, I told him, I said, yo, look, I'm not getting back in contact with you because of that. You know what I mean? I could care less. If we don't do this, it's whatever. I know us as brothers and what we've been through and the experiences that we experienced. We need to talk to one another because the thing and we found out within that conversation that we both had people talking within our ear while we were going through the process. It was the people telling me things about Kenan, you know, people telling things about me to him. Telling him things about you. Yeah, during that process with the producers and writers and, you know, trying to break that up.
Starting point is 01:01:16 Keep it all apart. And keep us apart. And we told ourselves we wouldn't allow that to happen again. And we really did that. You know, now every day we're speaking to one another, as far as brothers, and just checking on each other. Right. You guys did, so you guys did Good Burger 2 together.
Starting point is 01:01:31 Yeah. Can we expect to see more projects between you and Keenan? Yeah, definitely. Yeah, yeah. We've definitely been talking about more projects. Right. Yeah. Wake up with football every morning and listen to my new podcast,

Starting point is 01:03:29 on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. But I tell these guys, you know, Shannon, when I first was an idiot when I got my money, I had like three or four cars. and Dr. J says how many of
Starting point is 01:03:48 those cars can you drive at the same time I said what do you mean he says how many of those cars you got drive at the same time I says one he says well why you got four he said Chuck this money got to last you for the rest of your life he says this money got to last you the rest of your life. He says, this money gotta last you the rest of your life. He says, son, don't waste all your money on cars. Everybody know who you are. He said, you pull up in a Kia. They know, oh, that's Charles Barkley. You pull up in a Mercedes Benz or a Rolls Royce,
Starting point is 01:04:21 that's Charles Barkley. But the problem is that money, it's not the fact that you can't afford that car. It's the fact that that $300,000 you spent on that Bentley, if you bought a car for $70,000 or $80,000, you would have had $200,000
Starting point is 01:04:36 more in the bank, and it would have been growing and growing, and in one year, three years, five years, 20 years, that $200,000 is going to be worth a lot more. The question is, Charles, that when I tell sometimes, I tell young people,
Starting point is 01:04:50 you can afford that car right now at 20. Will you be able to afford that car at 60? Yeah, that's the key. There's a 40-year gap in there. But see, the young guys, they think, like, I always tell them, I say, yo, man, we know stuff. We, like, I ain't them, I say, yo man, we know stuff.
Starting point is 01:05:06 We like, I ain't trying to hate on no young guy. I'm trying to, cause I don't want you to be on that list. What list is that? 80% of professional athletes go broke. I don't want you on that list. Where are they now?
Starting point is 01:05:18 Yeah. Well, like, yo, this money, you're 20. When you 55, how much money are you going to have left?
Starting point is 01:05:27 That's the key. Especially if you're living a lifestyle right now. Don't you want to live that lifestyle for the rest of your life? I mean, I don't want to be poor. I've been poor. I know what it's like to eat raccoon, possum, sardines, Vienna sausages, pig ears, pig tails, pig feet.
Starting point is 01:05:43 I don't want to eat that no more, Chuck, unless I want to. I don't want to have that no more, Chuck, unless I want to. I don't want to have to eat it out of necessity. Hey, well, listen, I got to have my pig feet. You still eat pig feet? I do. Oh, yeah, I do. I got pig feet.
Starting point is 01:05:57 I get them. I go to a great soul food place here called K&K. Okay. I get me some pig ears. Not pig ears, pig feet. Yeah. I got to have my neck bone. You see, I love some neck bones. I get me some pig ears. Not pig ears, pig feet. Yeah. I got to have my neck bones. You see, I love some neck bones. I love neck bones.
Starting point is 01:06:07 Oxtails. That's their specialty. I love me some oxtails. Yeah, messy. You got to get some yams. You got to get some collets. I mean, but, you know, like I said, I started, and I tell them, I say, yo, man, I've been in your situation. I wasted money on cars. And then
Starting point is 01:06:24 you're like, oh, man. Because when you waste money on cars, you're really just trying to impress other people. Correct. That's what you're doing. That's like when I used to have nice cars, they said, what kind of rims you going to put on it? I said, what do you mean?
Starting point is 01:06:37 They're like, put some rims on it. I said, so if I put rims on it, I'm really trying to impress other people. Because I actually can't see the rims when I'm in the car. That's what I tell them. I said. Because I actually can't see the rims when I'm in the car. That's what I tell them. I say, you know I can't see the rims when I'm in the car. So I'm really, that's what Doc said. He said, so you're really trying to impress other people.
Starting point is 01:06:53 You don't have to impress people. They already know who the hell you are. Is it because, Charles, a lot of us come from single family homes. We didn't have anything. And this is the first opportunity. Because we don't see the other side. I don't think Peyton Manning went out and bought a Rolls Royce. I don't think guys, obviously, they have nice homes.
Starting point is 01:07:12 But I'm saying, because all I wanted, I was like, man, I'm going. When I saw Miami Vice and I saw that Ferrari, I said, I'm getting me one of those. And Rolex, I said, I got to get me one. So I wanted to like, that was my way of saying I've made it yeah and Herm Edwards who's somebody I really like and admire he says you can have one car
Starting point is 01:07:33 you don't need five you don't need a bunch of houses no he says I live by the one model you need one that's good enough and like I say, and the young black kids, and I'm talking to them, man, save your money.
Starting point is 01:07:50 Yes. And another thing, you don't have to take care of all your family and friends. For some reason, black people, myself included, I used to be like, my financial people told me, why are you taking care of seven, eight people? I'm like, well, he said, no, no, no, no.
Starting point is 01:08:06 No, you don't have to take care of everybody. Right. Because you're going to go broke. You know, so now I tell these young kids, yo, man, if you want to do something nice for your mom and dad, you want to do something nice for a brother or sister, that's fine. They don't have to be on the payroll. Right. You don't, like, no, you don't owe them.
Starting point is 01:08:23 That was their job to take care of you. But if you want to do something nice for them,'s fine grant hill his mom yeah rest in peace gave me the best advice ever i said because we were at the olympics actually here in atlanta in 96 and her and calvin had came down for a couple games they said uh well chuck we're we're gonna be here a couple days and we got to get back to work and i says grant just signed the first hundred million dollar contract in nba history she says sit your down charles i said miss hill he said charles i'm gonna just give you some advice do not start taking care of your family and friends because number one they're never gonna
Starting point is 01:09:01 stop and it's gonna ruin all your relationships. I said, what do you mean? He says, when you start giving people money, they're never going to ask you for money one time. Right. But she said, the second thing is, no matter what you do for them, the first time you tell them no, they hate you. And I said, what?
Starting point is 01:09:21 And I had to learn. People I had been giving money to, the first time I told them no, they're like, no, no, no, we're not friends anymore. That was a tough and painful lesson for me. You have Junior Bridgeman some credit too. People don't know who they are. Well, every time I see Junior, I say thank you
Starting point is 01:09:37 because Magic is kind of taking over now. Oh, yes. But Junior was a good player. But his portfolio, owning all those restaurants probably being the first billionaire athlete to be honest with you him they being and uh also is amazing businessman but every time i see junior bridgman like for a guy who didn't make a ton of money that's what's so impressive like and didn't have the name didn't have the name to learn how to handle business and he's probably got 500 to a
Starting point is 01:10:12 thousand restaurants now and like does it so low key does it so low key like every time around here i try to pick his brain right Right. Because it's different now. Because these guys make so much money. Yeah. I say, back in our day, you... I says, dude, and I'm not poo-pooing on this either. I want to make it clear. Because, you know, when I say it, it's going to sound stupid.
Starting point is 01:10:37 The most money I made was $5 million. That was my last year. Right. I says, now that's below the minimum. I says, to be a businessman in our day and become a billionaire, you are great at business. Right. You are great at business. And he wasn't a name.
Starting point is 01:10:59 People wanted to attach themselves to Magic. Yes. People wanted to attach themselves to Mike. Yes. He was Junior Bridgeman. Just a great businessman and a good dude that his here's to here's his to me is one of the greatest stories ever and if i was the nba i would bring him in every year to my teams. Teams.
Starting point is 01:11:27 And say, guys, because what people don't understand, everybody on an NBA team or NFL team ain't making a lot of money. True. Or ain't going to play a lot of years. 10, 15. The average in both sports, the average year is about four years. Those are the guys who need a junior Brisbane. That's like, you know, I was watching the draft last night and this always annoys me about young kids.
Starting point is 01:11:49 I was like, these dudes got Louis Vuitton shirts. Iced out. I don't mind a little ice, but too much ice. They got Dior shoes. I says, they do know that money
Starting point is 01:12:04 ain't gonna last forever, right right get you a pair of nikes i'm not paying for no dr shoes uh but you gotta be nice because you had that cranberry suit on you a nice junk with that little skinny tie there's nothing wrong with a nice suit want to join club shea shea become an official member by hitting that subscribe button where you never know who's going to be joining us for drinks and conversation.
