So what happened at Chappaquiddick?
Well, it really depends on who you talk to.
There are many versions of what happened in 1969
when a young Ted Kennedy drove a car into a pond.
And left a woman behind to drown.
Chappaquiddick is a story of a tragic death
and how the Kennedy machine took control.
Every week we go behind the headlines
and beyond the drama of America's Royal Family.
Listen to United States of Kennedy on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever
you get your podcasts.

So it's only right we got a champ with us.
We're going to introduce him last. I'm your host. My name right we got a champ with us. We're gonna introduce him last
I'm your host. My name is DJ Wales to my far left. We got my dog Bishop be here out the pearly is how you what nasty
Down listen, no, I mean he had a uniform. No, sir. He's stunning the new J
No, I mean he were the black forces with the white laces, you know, I'm saying what some of the craziest shoes
You've ever wrestled in you know, see you got the off-white song the presto's classics come on now these are actually brand new I picked these up
during fanatics fest over to what was it man some shoe store I forgot what it was
the night express like club yeah it's like child of a fight club like club
yeah they hooked it up but I think the craziest pair I've ever wrestled in is
like the sock Balenciaga's.
Oh yeah, I seen you.
That was absolutely terrible.
And it wasn't on purpose either.
I left my boots at the hotel.
There's the spring, I ain't going now.
Yeah, I mean I taped it, but either way,
you could still feel it.
Yeah, bro.
And the funniest part about it is they made a tops card
of me doing a springboard,
and it's like the most crooked springboard like that's ever been on a tops card
because it's just have no bounds.
I just said you a hell of an athlete
because they have no stability,
they're legitimately socks for sure.
That's a fact.
For sure, my right, my dog, young Nacho,
young T, got you what?
Chillin' bro, it's an honor right here.
We got a champ in the building.
Y'all know I'm a wrestling fanatic.
So to have him here, I've been seeing his stories since a kid, to see where he is now is pretty dope. So I'm happy to have him in the building. Y'all know I'm a wrestling fanatic. So to have him here, I've been seeing his stories
since I was a kid.
To see where he is now is pretty dope.
So I'm happy to have him on the show.
I'm about to introduce him.
Shout out to John, man.
Guys here at SummerSlim.
Like we said, it's only right we got the champ with us, man.
We'll be waiting for this episode.
Don Mysterio in the building.
Big Don, appreciate you sliding on us, man.
Oh man, thank you guys for having me.
I see.
It's a continental champ.
You know the vibes?
Yeah, on the 20 year anniversary too. Yeah. Come on now. Nah, it's hard kind little champion of the vibes. Yeah on the 20 year anniversary, too. Yeah, come on now
Man, I grew up watching your pops man. Oh, come on legend
It's like where was that? Where your rumble? Yeah, I see my boy come out. I was geeks. Well, which one?
Yeah, it was in our hometown
Yeah, yeah, the pops came, he erupted in there.
He's trash, but...
It's still athletic though, bro.
I mean, for... For real?
He's pushing 50. He's like 51 now, but I don't know.
It's funny because he's new to the wrestling world, obviously he's aware of it it. But like for him to be locked in with OG like that made it hilarious.
That's what made it.
When your cops came out bro, I stood up.
I don't do that fan boy shit.
When my moms came out, Jeff, what you gonna read this?
I don't know.
It's like seeing a real life leprechaun.
No, you get excited because you don't see him often.
See?
That was big for me.
I told him.
Look man, TIG lifelong wrestling fan, for sure.
Tapped in with his, you spoke very highly of him very early.
Nah, I said he was going to be a star.
I mean, when he first came into the wrestling business, obviously I seen him when he had
the, you know, Eddie
Guerrero, RIP legend, his pops had a beef and he they were
fighting over who was the father, the custody match against
him. I seen him and it was just like,
The custody?
Yeah, you know about this?
No, I'm here to learn. Let's find out who your dad was.
So I'll, I'll give you a quick breakdown. So basically you're aware that my dad
Alleged his array Mysterio. Yeah, so in 2005 Eddie Guerrero came out and said that back in the day
He wrote a book that he was going through some troubles back in the day
He had a kid that he couldn't take care of and that kid was me
Well, so he came out and started this whole custody battle over me saying that he is now in the right place and he wanted me back.
So they fought for my custody.
In Summer Slam in 2000.
Legendary storyteller.
Oh boy, you grew up fucked up.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
It's called, I did another podcast, I believe it was with Logan, and they called it Childhood Trauma.
For sure, that's at the top of the list. Nah, that's crazy though. I believe it was with Logan and they called it childhood trauma
That's crazy though, listen more is what they
Wrestle it out. Yeah, and I was I was sitting that though So the whole story I was sitting ringside and I had a social worker
With me so like I couldn't go home. There was like a social worker there that was like taking care of me
Like like a whole deal.
Now that's hard.
How old were you?
Then?
Yeah.
I was eight, eight years old.
Oh, they started you with the trenches early.
Yeah.
You jumped off the porch early.
You can't on TV for a-
Yeah.
That's hard though bro, that's a hard story.
Nah, legendary storyline for sure.
So now to see like the fans react to him
and like even like when you won the belt,
we were there at WrestleMania
Yeah, how crazy everybody went like what's that feeling like bro? Honestly?
It was it was pretty surreal cuz like I wasn't expecting that reaction. You know I for me
You said you're new right? Yeah, I got you for the past two years. I've been getting booed
Yeah, relentlessly like I like doing this out in public like I'd get booed like people don't let me talk.
It's like a thing.
So the fact that the fact that I was able to go out to WrestleMania and like my music hit and I was getting booed and
then as the match started going I just kept hearing my name kept getting chanted and then it just kept going the song and then
as soon as I won and the crowd went crazy. I was like this is this is kind of nuts and then I'm sorry
You're getting boots
Yeah, I cuz I turned I I turned on my dad my dead be dead
I Now, yeah, yeah. It's clicking. Okay, I'm with it now. I claim to be the greatest mystery of all time.
I'm third generation, so like my great uncle.
And then my dad.
So I claim to be.
And then my uncle has a son too.
So he's out.
So there's like four of us out there.
I mean, do you walk around a family gathering
with the belt on?
I mean, if you got it flaunts it right? Yeah
Respect I gotta ask we know we asked
What people did before this word but growing up with what was that like?
You know saying growing up as a kid being around a business now being a big part of it
Is there any differences or like seeing it early?
What it is and the way it's evolved and now you being a big part of it
Is it changing to you at all is it just kind of like made you ready for the moment?
I think it was, I think it was more of like the, yeah.
Let me turn it off.
You good bro.
You good bro.
We don't get that.
You could have answered that.
Check it out.
That money.
But no, honestly it was, it's, it's kind of surreal because I do things now as an adult
based off of what I saw as a kid and how certain things were being done
So like I picked that up as a kid and now I do it as an adult
So like or even stuff that I saw like my dad didn't do so like I'm doing it now
and then also like just growing up and knowing the business knowing the ins and outs like having more respect for it now
being in the industry you know for having respect for the grind being you
know on the road 360 days out of the year you know no days off so like that
definitely gave me a lot more respect for what we do now. Okay.
I can't even imagine what you would have done.
Was there anything else you wanted to do
outside of wrestling or did you thought growing up
you might have wanted to dabble into
or just knew that wrestling was gonna be it?
Nah, so honestly I was never really good in school
as far as grades go, but I played sports,
I played soccer and football growing up.
I was Mexican, so of course I had a soccer ball on my, on my left foot.
But, um, nah, I went to JC and never really, you know, did anything.
So I was, I told pops, I was like, you know what, let me give it a shot.
See what happens.
And then he, he told me before I even started training, he's like, when you
get in there the first day, he was, I'm going to know if basically if you're
going to be dog shit or not, he was, I'm gonna know if, basically if you're gonna be dog shit or not.
He goes, I'm gonna let you know if you got it.
And if you don't, he goes, first day I'm gonna let you
go back to school.
So here we are now.
Damn.
He wasn't dog shit.
Yeah, greatest mystery of all time, clock it.
If I could ask, what's that first day like for you?
Cause like you said, all right, I'm jumping off the porch.
What's that first moment where you gotta really I used to I'm jumping off the porch What's that first moment? You got a really lock in?
honestly, it's it's different for everybody cuz like
You know, there's different training and like wrestling schools. So like me for example, I was able to
Start training lucha style with you know, my dad Rey Mysterio and my godfather Conan
But I remember specifically like a lot of people run the ropes maybe learn how to bump
I rolled like just lucha rolls straight for
two hours
non-stop till we're like I
Get dizzy want to throw up and then they're like no just keep rolling and all around the ring just for hours hours
And now I'm pretty sure I didn't learn how to like bump until like maybe a couple months in.
Well, damn, so yeah, everyone, everyone's different.
Cause then after that I went to lived in in Tampa, Florida for six months,
trained with Jay lethal, uh, came home for a month and then out to Calgary
and Canada trained with land storm for another three months.
So I just did a bunch of like different little training camps to try to get a little bit of everything and then
Sure enough when the opportunity presented itself. I jumped on it. Yeah, your godfather is Conan
I have I have six lucha godfathers. Well, yeah all old-school like WCW wrestlers
So I you might know him you might not but I'll who've into girl
Psychosis. Yeah
Damien he he wrestled in WCW is in the LWO Damien 666
Who else we got super Carlo
He's the he used to come out in WCW with like a like glasses silver mask and like a hat never fell off
And then Villano. He was another luchador. Yeah, I might be missing one angle with like a like glasses silver mask and like a hat never fell off and then
Villano he was another luchador yeah I might be missing one. I ain't gonna lie, I used to like
psychosis. Yeah, I was a girl, that was my dog. You know, first NWO? I got psychosis
tattooed on my ear right now. I swear I'm not giving y'all the finger. I'm just showing you.
I used to like psychosis. What did all the rolling around help you do though? What was all that for? It's uh, it's different cuz it's like
Lucha style is very you know when you take certain moves you got a roll
Getting out of the ring or just you know, it just it's part of the basics that you got to learn, you know in in
Like American style it would be running the ropes, probably getting it first.
Lucha style, you gotta learn new roles.
Okay.
Ugh, come on, why is this taking so long?
This thing is ancient.

That's cool. What's the hardest part about this wrestling shit?
Probably living through the pain
because no matter what you're always gonna have aches and pains and
And the traveling and stuff and it's like people don't really realize like the kind of toll that actually takes on your body
Like your back calluses up because the ropes are so hard and like first day you run the ropes like your back is completely bruised So like your body's got to get used to that
Taking the bumps and going through all this other shit and then having to do it again the next day
Yeah, so it's like just constantly having to do it no matter if like you're hurting you gotta if you're not.
You don't have no recovery routine or nothing for it.
I mean I probably should be better as far as like getting home and like doing the ice baths and then getting massages and stuff like that
but I'll just sit in my game room. Yeah, just play Call of Duty.
You gonna lie?
You don't see OD?
Yeah.
You don't see OD?
Come on now. Okay. Yeah, I'm trash. I caught I ain't gonna lie
I mean, I'm not I'm not great, but every now and then I get a little sweaty in there. Yeah
You screaming? No, no, not yet. Okay, I too bro. Yeah, we got tap in
We got a champion. You are here be legend doing there. I'm down
I got I got a wall of controllers cuz of controllers because I get a little Mexican angry.
You be drinking.
That's how I like it.
That's how I like it.
That's how I like it.
Now your streaming room will be evolved in.
For sure.
It's happening.
Most definitely, listen man,
favorite part of the show, moments with Chyna,
when I ask, you know what I'm saying,
you go through the ropes,
you become your own man,
become your own name in this business.
You start getting them checks like you demand in this business.
What's that first crazy purchase, man?
Not nothing responsible, not the house, not no family, where she was like, nah, it's time.
Man, I think my first big purchase was like.
Probably my car.
Probably my car or I went a little crazy on at the LV store. I went a little crazy at
the LV store. What car did we get though? You brushed over that real quick. I got a I got myself a Range Rover.
Yeah. But I started doing a little like and it's not a good habit to have but
every WrestleMania that I'm on I get myself a new watch.
Oh, I see the watch right there.
Yeah.
So this was WrestleMania 40.
I'm hooked with that.
40.
You can sell that thing,
I can get a mom's phone right here right here.
Yeah, chime in, you know?
You know the moms?
Yeah, that's dope.
See, Freaky Mark, our producer,
that's what he be on, you know what I'm saying? Every time we go play, I be getting a new watch. Yeah? Yeah, that's why. That's dope. See, Freaky Mike, our producer, that's what he be on, you know what I'm saying?
Every time we go platinum, he get a new watch.
Yeah?
Yeah, that's why he got an Apple Watch.
He be in bottoms right now.
Okay.
You a watch?
Did you say Freaky Mike?
Yeah, it's Freaky Mike.
Yeah, that's my artist.
That's right. Okay.
Ask him what his finisher is.
I don't know if I want to know.
Whatever Rakesh did.
I have a stink face.
That sounds like some freaky mouth.
I don't know you very well.
Yeah.
That's the artist.
You a watch boy though?
Yeah, I started getting into myself a nice little collection.
I used to steal my dad's watches before I got my own.
Damn, you been to opposite houses. Yeah.
You know?
I would steal his watches and go out.
And I used to steal his cars too as a kid and just, you know,
drive out and about.
I always take and pops his stuff.
And pops right.
I know he had that shit too.
Yeah, he had some good stuff.
I would walk around and they'd be like, how'd you get that?
I worked hard.
Worked hard sneaking in, making sure he didn't hear me in the middle of the night.
It's funny because we talked to all the wrestlers, I had to talk about the time commitment.
No time to really recover, but as much as I got to get to different places,
Pabba's on the ropes, he probably didn't even know, he probably hit the block in the whip,
he'd been gone for two weeks, he didn't notice.
100%.
It's funny, he used to have an Audi R8
I've been all the miles in it because he was gone and I would I told my mom I'd be like, hey
I'm going to school and then she didn't know which car I just grabbed the Audi and
by the time
And I didn't have a license either
So by the time they were come my mom would call me I'm like already down the freeway. I'm like, sorry, I'm gonna, I gotta get to school.
For sure.
Self-call.
Yeah.
Yeah.
That's crazy.
You were starting to pull up in the RA?
Yeah.
But no license though.
No, yeah.
It was Bob's.
Honestly, looking back at it, was it the smartest of the visions?
And I know you was pressing that pedal.
For sure.
Or that tattoo.
Yeah.
All right.
You gotta press that pedal. Damn.. We had tattoos. Yeah. All right, gotta press that pedal.
Damn.
I have a heavy left foot.
No wrong with it.
I'm a wrestling fan.
These guys, he's into wrestling.
He's getting new to it.
You finally cleared to wrestle, man.
You can't, you know, you been banged up for a while, man.
You finally get cleared.
Now you got a chance to go
against AJ Styles.
SummerSlam.
Yeah.
I'm looking forward to it.
How you feeling about it?
Man, I'm feeling pretty good.
You know, it's my 20 year anniversary.
So I feel like SummerSlam is like a big pay-per-view
for the Mysterio family.
Being that I debuted as a kid in SummerSlam, and then as a wrestler
I debuted at a SummerSlam, and then when my dad had his first PLE with the company, it
was at SummerSlam.
So like, this is a special event for us, you know, especially coming back now, 20 years
later, and as a champion too, it's like no one's fighting for my custody,
we're fighting for this.
And you know, I'm walking in and out as a champ.
So like I'm looking forward to it for sure.
Nah, that's dope man.
I'm looking forward to the entrance.
Yeah, you go Saturday or Sunday?
Sunday, I'm Sunday.
You going Sunday?
Yeah, I'll be there.
All right, I hope you get on your feet.
I'ma look for you, make sure you're on your feet I'ma look for you make sure you're on your feet like different pops
Remember, City? But we will get it.
We'll make it go down.
Our boy, David, said we on the floor.
I'll figure it out.
We gonna make it work.
Yeah, for sure.
Listen, you've been a part of a lot of matches,
a lot of things going on.
What's a crazy moment or a wild memory,
a moment that people may not know?
I know we got from the Netflix documentary.
I was getting a little bit of behind the scenes stuff,
but what's a crazy,
natural moment that people may not be too privy to,
but you tapped in with?
So there's actually a really,
it's a good moment for me.
Not so good of a moment for the other person.
Um, it was, man, I want to say backlash or when, when Finn and Damien won the tag
team titles against Sammy and Kevin, and they had that big street fight.
When I first came out, um, I came from like the side not the main entrance the camera guy
And the cord came up
So like it was almost like waist level as I was running through so I had to jump over it
Almost like hurdling it and you couldn't really see it
So they had to slow mo it and the guys in the camera crew and like in the truck were like now
I'm just hurdled this fucking cord. And that kind of threw me off.
So the bad part was when I came in, I hit Kevin Owens with the edge of my elbow.
And I just sliced them.
Like it was like a perfect slice where I like barely nicked them and it got him
completely and he came out and he was just dripping blood.
So I think that's like a, one of those moments where people don't really know
that like, there was like a cord in the way. So like, I mean, I of those moments where people don't really know that like
there was like a cord in the way. So like I mean I was still gonna hit him but like
It was supposed to be like that
So what's that conversation like? Like paying receipts. So what's that conversation after the match? It's just like ah it's part of business or I'm gonna get you back
It was it was more of like like
Here's a water bottle
and a towel, my bad.
Obviously I didn't mean to hit him with my elbow,
but I don't know, I wrestled him a couple times
and I came out unscathed, so I think we're good.
I want to say we're good.
Thanks.
You asked about the pay receipts part,
you didn't make a lot.
Yeah, but I've been told my frog splash is a little heavy,
so I know I've gotten a few receipts after that
How many injuries have you had in this? Oh, yeah
Not many thank goodness, but I've my my more serious ones
Like I have my ribs a couple weeks ago
I dislocated my two lower ribs and they were digging into my cartilage
So that was why I was actually like hurt. Everyone thought I was faking it but I was actually hurt and then my
first match as a bad guy I rustled edge and I did a frog splash and I cracked my
rib and it punctured a lung and then I finished the match and then I just
remember not being able to catch my breath and I told the doctor I was like
no no no I'm good went back to the locker room ten minutes later I was like I still can't, I was like, no, no, no, I'm good. Went back to the locker room, 10 minutes later,
I was like, I still can't breathe.
I was like, this is, that's like, this ain't right.
Sure enough, went to the hospital and they're like,
yeah, you got an anemothorax, you can't fly home.
I was like, oh, sick.
Damn.
Hey, what's crazy about that is,
all right, man, you got about two weeks.
Use your paper, use your paper view, bro.
Yeah, literally.
They're like, all right, back to it.
As long as he's good to go, can you breathe? He's good. That's crazy. That is crazy, bro. That's the toughest sport in the world, literally. They're like, all right, back to it. As long as he's good to go. Can you breathe? He's good.
That's crazy.
That is crazy, bro.
That's the toughest sport in the world, bro.
Yeah, I really do think so.
Yeah, people feel ways about it, but they're crazy.
I'm like, what y'all have to endure, especially Travis Scott,
which I put your body through and the way I perform, bro,
that's, it's unmatched, bro.
You gotta really love it.
Like, there's no way.
I used to disrespect wrestling. I ain't gonna lie to you.
Damn, like that? I'm gonna keep it real, bro. You gotta really love it. Like, there's no way. I used to disrespect wrestling, I ain't gonna lie to you.
Damn, like that?
I'm gonna keep it real, bro.
I went to a, I was about your age, about eight,
and I went to a wrestling match,
and I seen a motherfucker swing, and they missed.
And he fell down.
Do you remember who that wrestler was?
That was my child trauma.
I don't even remember, fuck him.
He probably, I'm gonna say,
he probably wasn't very good at his job.
Ever since then, because when he, when I first started really kicking him, he was a big wrestler, I'm gonna say, he probably wasn't very good at his job. But, Ever since then,
cause when he, when I first started really kicking with him,
he's a big wrestler, I'm like, bro,
it's so lame that you like,
just so entertained by this shit.
But then we went in our hometown and I had a blast.
Brought you back?
For real, and we sat in there for about four or five hours,
maybe.
And didn't even realize.
Didn't even realize.
His first event in wrestling was for a while.
Okay.
He was like, oh, I got spoiled.
That's a good one to go to.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
You know what I mean?
So I'm entertained now.
I'm tapped in.
He's back.
I'm back.
I'm back.
Okay.
We gotta get you right now.
None of this Rey Mysterio bullshit is mine.
I just watched your father.
I just got to respect the legend for sure.
You like being a hero?
I love it.
Yeah.
I just think it gives me more freedom
to be able to say and do what I want
and it's more of a chance to ask for forgiveness
instead of permission.
Yeah, that's all.
And you can tell by the response of the fans,
they rocking with it too.
Yeah, I mean, I haven't changed anything, you know?
Like, I'm a dick to them when I see them.
They're just like, you know? And it I'm a dick to them when I see them. You know?
And it's like they get a kick out of it.
So like for me, I'm just, you know,
I'm just doing my job and I'm having fun doing it.
Definitely.
