They were talking about the secret for getting motivated and accomplishing really big goals.
There's a couple of different secrets.
So if you watch my latest YouTube video, don't worry, I'm talking about a lot more stuff than just a vision board.
Hey, clutterbugs.
Welcome back to the clutterbug podcast.
We're talking about motivation again today.
I talk about motivation a lot because this is something I struggle with.
And I feel like this is something a lot of people struggle with.
We want to do things in our lives.
But motivation wanes. Sometimes we feel really excited to do the things on our list and especially
the beginning of the year, January, right? We're all like, woo-hoo, gung-ho. But they said something like
90% of people who set a New Year's resolution have completely given up by the end of January. Like,
we don't even last 30 days of keeping this up. Why? Why? Why do we give up? Because we lose
motivation. We're no longer excited about it. And excitement is really what motivation really is. It's,
it's that feeling of like inspiration. Like I'm so excited to do this thing and change my life.
And when we're in that state, that state of excitement, we will move mountains. We will find a way.
We don't need a plan. We don't need a strategy. We don't need step-by-step instructions.
We don't need to research things. We will swim across the ocean.
to get to the other side if we are feeling excited about what is over there.
And the reason we're lacking motivation, well, for me, is because sometimes I'm just not excited
about it. Who gets excited about dishes? Nope, not me. Doing the laundry, cleaning the house
for the 50 millionth time. Doing any type of work that I have to do. It's hard. That's why they
call it work. And we just aren't always excited about it. What we are,
excited about is the results but even then we can fail to feel that inspiration that spark that gets us
up and moving and taking action so let's talk about that today i went to a tony robbins event a couple of
weeks ago i'm not preaching tony robbins you love them you hate them i don't know i just went to this
event a friend had paid for the ticket and invited me to come for free it was a five-day event
and I learned a lot and I drank the Kool-Aid.
He might be a cult leader.
I don't know, but I have drank the Kool-Aid.
That being said, I feel like I gained so much.
I'm not going to be that person that's shilling out $15,000 for more advice,
because there's one piece of advice.
I can carry it with me forever as a tool in my toolbox.
I've already seen it change my life in the short amount of time since then,
and I know it's going to change your life too so you can save the money.
and I'm going to share Tony Robbins' three-step secret for success.
And I don't mean this is like success, like you're going to be a bazillionaire or whatever,
or have this successful business.
I mean like accomplishing your goal success.
And the three-step system is state, story, and strategy.
If you can change your state, your story, and your strategy, you can accomplish
anything. So what is state? State is the thing that we have to change first. And I think, honestly,
it's the most important piece. State is our excitement level about something. State is what really
is the core of motivation. It's us feeling like, yes, I can do this. I'm happy. I'm energized. I'm
pumped for life. And this is something that's really hard. It feels like it'd be really hard to just
manifest out of nowhere, like to fake this, right? If you're feeling low and tired, like you don't want to
accomplish anything. How do you instantly start feeling like, woo, motivated and happy and excited?
And what Tony Robbins showed me during this event is I can change my state in seconds by faking it
till I make it. It involves getting up and doing movement and making noise. So like, yes,
yes, I could do this, doing little jumping jacks, doing some weird little motion, doing lots of cheering.
You're putting on some really upbeat music and you're dancing on.
around, you are changing your state to get yourself pumped. And it feels really weird. But I tried it
because I'm like, listen, I can't knock it until I try it. I try everything. I mean, I'll try it.
We'll see. It feels weird. And the crazy thing is, I instantly felt excited. I felt like energized.
I got this little boost like woo, like a lot of coffee straight to my veins by jumping up and
dancing around for a few minutes and doing a little cheering. So that's how you change your state.
I'm not saying you always have to do this, but when we're feeling, even Mel Robbins says 5, 4, 3, 2, 1,
take action, the 5 second rule. So when we know we should do something and our mind is trying to
tuck us out of it, to save us energy so we can relax to conserve ourselves for when we have to,
I don't know, chase down a gazelle later, it's human nature.
to want to relax and to avoid hard work and to avoid stressful situations.
How do we override this human nature?
We just jump up and we force ourselves to take action, move around, do a little cheer,
stand up, put our shoes on.
All the experts have different things that they recommend.
And Mel Robbins' five-second rule is just counting down from five and Tony Robbins is
jumping up and down and yell, woo!
and the fly lady is just putting on your running shoes.
Whatever you do, whichever of these work for you,
it's realizing how important this first step is
because we have to change our state.
The next part of the secret of success is our story.
And what so many of us fall into is this victim mentality story.
I mean, I don't want to use the word victim, like lightly or anything,
but we fall into this trap of,
I'm just born messy or I'm just not good at this or it's not fair my husband doesn't help my kids
don't help I work and they just make a mess or I'm tired I don't have enough time in the day
I'll never get this done because I'm not smart enough I don't have enough money I don't have enough
time in the day no one's helping me whatever it is that we're telling us why we can't do the things
that we can that is our story that is the book we've written for ourselves so that is the book we're
living. We've already sort of laid it out for us. And most of us just naturally kind of have a
negative story. Why do we do this? I don't know. Some people say proximity is power. So what that
means is the more people you're around who are stuck in this poor me, I can never have this,
it's not fair. Look what they have mentality. The more it rubs off on you. And also, part of it is just
human nature because life is freaking hard. And sometimes it is.
unfair when we just clean the kitchen and then people pile dishes in the sink. So we get trapped in
this story of nothing's ever going to change so why bother? So how could we possibly, even if we
jump around and cheer like weirdos and we're like, woo, we put our shoes on and we count down from
five, if this is the story we're telling ourselves, we are not going to take action. We are going to
have to be pushing ourselves uphill because we've built this huge mountain. So we change our story.
And this is what people say, I mean, that the way you say this is mindfulness.
And this is why they say, have a gratitude journal and all these things that people say,
all the experts say.
What it's really coming down to is recognizing when you're having that negative talk to yourself
and saying the opposite.
My house might be disorganized right now, but actually, I'm an organized person and I know I'll get there.
I may have a lot of debt right now, but I know that I'm going to pay it off.
and I know I'm going to make smart financial decisions.
I'm not going to be perfect, but I'm going to get there.
We're changing our story.
We're telling ourselves that we can do this
for this whole time we've been telling ourselves that we can't.
And the last step, the last secret for success, is strategy.
It's having an actual plan.
It's having a goal.
I feel like a goal is better than a plan
because a lot of you listening might be over planners.
You might be overthinkers, over researchers.
You might be like, you know, so overwhelmed with the deal.
You're stuck in the weeds till the end of time. So just having a goal is really important. That's part of the strategy because if you are excited, if you were in the right state and you have the right story, you're like, I know I can do this. I feel it with all of my being. I got this. Nothing will stop me. I know I can do this. And you remind yourself of this every day. Every day you wake up and you get yourself pumped and you tell yourself, you know you can do this. You don't need a plan. You'll figure it out. You will make.
make things happen. You will try and fail and get up and try again until you get it right.
But a strategy and a goal can definitely help you get there a little bit faster.
And the great thing is, there are strategies coming out the wazoo. And the truth is, you probably
already know the steps that you need to take. And the reason you haven't done it is because
you're in the wrong state and you've been telling yourself the wrong story. And if you can change
those first two things, everything's going to become clear with the strategy.
So I wanted to talk about another way that we can change our state and our story.
Besides just jumping around and cheering or putting on shoes or counting down from five or whatever
cool thing that they say, you know, having positive affirmations all over the bathroom
mirror when you get up, those are wonderful. Those are great. The truth is sometimes we forget
to remember to do these things. Anytime we're changing a habit and negative self-talk is a habit,
being messy as a habit, spending more money than we should as a habit. All of these things are habits.
This is so hard to break. It's so easy to say, I'm just going to change my ways. And then the next day,
without even realizing it, you're falling back into old patterns because those are habits.
So we need to create new habits and how do we do that? I'm going to talk about that. I'm going to
share a ton of different ways that you can make.
new positive habits that create real motivation so you can accomplish real goals

So let's talk about some really easy things that you can do to change your habits,
to get motivated to change your state and your story every single day.
This is the hard part, but there are easy ways that we can take like hacks, like little shortcuts,
making this happen. And I'm going to talk about three of those things right now. The first is visual
cues. You know, this is what I'm going to say. I'm going to say the vision board. But listen,
before you roll your eyes and shut off this podcast, just please hear me out. A vision board is just
taking the time to take your goals and to put them up somewhere in a visual way to remind you
that these are the things that are important in your life. It's a visual cue to help you refocus and
feel, feel that spark of inspiration again. Like, oh yeah, I'm excited about this. This is a goal I want
to get done. Cool. I should like do something small today or tomorrow to achieve it, to keep working on
it. Because we forget to remember. We get distracted by so many other things in our life that we
forget what's really important to us. Or we fall into these old routines and old habits that don't
lead us closer to what we really want. So we need a visual cue, whether we're a visual organizer or not,
but especially if we are a visually minded person, having a visual cue of what's important and what
excites us and what makes us feel like, yeah, super pumped, what gets us into state, which changes
our story, a vision board works. And you can go to www.com and go under my printable's page and find a free
template for a digital vision board. What this is, it's a Canva template where you can just search on Google
images for clean organized houses or bookshelves or pantries or maybe your goal is to run 5K or maybe
your goal is to travel, whatever it is. You can find images that really represent that. You can upload
them into Canva, drag and drop them into this template and save it as either your phone wallpaper
or your computer wallpaper.
So every time you're on a screen,
you're feeling that spark of motivation,
either subconsciously or consciously
because you're looking at your goals.
Your vision board doesn't have to be this traditional Bristol board
with lots of magazine pictures all over it.
It can be on your phone.
It can be on your computer,
or it can be something that's just small
that you put on your calendar
or inside your planner.
You can print it out someplace that you're going to,
to look at every day for that visual cue, that visual spark to change your state and remind you
that you're changing your story. The second thing you can do now that we have a visual cue is an
auditory cue. And what an auditory cue is, is alarms. I know these are annoying, but setting reminders
on your phone that alert you that have a little blud-up and it pops up, hey, work on this goal,
do the dishes tonight before you go to bed, do a 10 minute tidy up before you go to bed, go for a walk,
take the dog for a walk this morning, set a date with yourself every day or a couple of times of
week to do something that gets you closer to your goal. Set an auditory reminder that this is
important to you. Don't forget, this is some cool thing you want to do and make sure it's something
that actually excites you. If you really want to get into shape and you're like, ugh, but the idea of going for a walk
sounds awful. What if we just like put on music and dance for five minutes? Is that something that you feel
a little like, woo, inspired to do? Goals don't have to be hard. You can get to the same place,
but find your own path. Think of fun things that you can do that will get you closer to your goal
and schedule those in as dates with yourself and reminders. And there are days that you just like
snooze it and don't listen, but I promise you there are going to be more days that you take
action than if you didn't have the reminders at all. And that's what this is all about. It's not about
hitting every goal every time. It's not about showing up for yourself every day. You can skip days,
you can miss days. You can take two steps forward and one step back. And guess what? You're still
one step ahead. Last thing I recommend doing to really build this spark, to really find daily
motivation to change your state and your story is to borrow it from someone else. What I do is I
listen to audiobooks, I listen to podcasts, or I'll watch YouTube videos that are motivational.
I will take motivation from someone else when I'm not feeling it. I could be laying in bed
and just watching a random YouTube. I'll type in motivational video. And I have a few that I love
that I listen to over and over again. Mel Robbins, anything by Mel Robbins pumps me up.
She's amazing. Tony Robbins also pumps me up. Listen, if your last name is Robbins,
apparently you are just born dripping with motivation and inspiration. So I borrow it from them.
I have a lot of audio self-help books that I just randomly will play sometimes when I'm not
feeling motivated. Atomic Habits is another one of those like, oh, lighting a fire under my butt.
Maybe it's a podcast. Find something. Read a book. If you love paper books, have one that you like that
you can just pull out and I use sticky notes on my paper book to flip to the page.
where there's something that's being said that just clicks in me. Find that. Saturate your brain.
Borrow it from other people. Borrow their motivation so that you can have it when you just don't
have it yourself, when you're just not feeling it. When all the vision boards and the alarms and the
reminders are just not enough to get you up and get you excited for your life, borrow it from someone
else. Remember the three steps. It's the combination of these three things that means you can do
anything, changing your state, changing your story, and changing your strategy. If you have up until now
not seeing the results that you're looking for, it's those three things you need to work on.
Thank you guys so much for listening. I hope you enjoyed and I'll see you next time.
