Hey guys, welcome back to the Clutterbug podcast. Today I'm going to talk about the joys of organization. And I know this is going to sound really, really lame to say, but it actually makes me happy when I'm organizing something. And I'm, I think I might have some ADHD, definitely undiagnosed, but I have trouble focusing on things for a long period of time. And the truth is I'm not really good at anything. I don't have something in my life, even as a young.
kid growing up that gave me that sort of immediate gratification, that feeling of success in a short
amount of time and I needed a short amount of time so I never played a musical instrument.
I never practiced and got really great at any sports.
There wasn't anything that I was seeing, you know, a connection with because all of those things
took time, talent, and practice.
And then I discovered organization and that's a completely different ballgame because
with organization you can literally spend 15, 20 minutes doing a little drawer or a section of your closet
and see immediate results. And those results are long lasting. If I organize, you know, a junk drawer,
I'm going to save time every time I need to find the batteries for, but it totally all adds up.
And it feels good. It feels good to make things more functional and it feels good to make things more beautiful.
and for me it has become a bit of an obsession or an addiction it's something that I would rather do
than you know all the other chores that I could do and it is something while doing some organization
I'll tell you that used to be this dreaded daunting horrible thing you know I try my favorite coat
and have to pull all the coats out and have a big giant pile and I guess I didn't know how to organize maybe
I did I struggled with organization and it definitely wasn't fun when I first was
trying to do it. But you know what? The truth is I wasn't doing it right. I was not organizing the right
way. And it's following the ad. It was like a light bulb moment. Once I started following the acronym
space, so sort, purge, assign, contain, and podcast. That's when it just became this super easy and
fun thing to do. Probably still my favorite organizing jobs are the quick and easy ones,
like a drawer. Today I went to the dollar.
tree, you have to head over to the dollar tree. They have brand new drawer organizers. They're plastic.
They have rubber on the bottom and little rubber feet. I think I spent like $40 on different
drawer organizers, even though I already had drawer organizers because these ones were so much cooler,
so much heavy-duty and they had so many different sizes. They'd like six different sizes to choose
from so you could mix or match. So I bought a whole bunch of drawer organizers and I came home and I
reorganized my you know junk drawer and the candle drawer I have a candle drawer I know that's
ridiculous for candles and sensi and I reorganized the kids you know craft the kids homework and it didn't
take a lot of time I probably spent maybe 15 minutes tops doing all the drawers and it gave me this
immediate sense of like yeah I've accomplished something yes I spent money to buy it but I've got so
many drawers left over, drawer organizers left over, I can go and tackle another drawer. It's like that
pick me up, you know, when you're feeling down or you're feeling like, oh, I should have done the laundry
and I didn't, and I have all this work to do, and where do I start? If you organize a little tiny thing,
you're still feeling that sense of accomplishment, but it's not taking a ton of time. And you get that
joy of every time you open the drawer, looking at an organized drawer, you're like, oh, it just makes you feel good
inside. So that is how I really transitioned from super slob to clean freak. It's just those few
minutes that I spend every day or once a week tackling a small area in my home. And I did it really
selfishly to make myself feel good to accomplish something without spending a lot of time.
And I just loved the immediate gratification. I loved that feeling that you get from it's it is, it's joy that
you get from organization. So that's why I'm titling this podcast, The Joy of Organization.
If you have yet to feel this experience, you are biting off more than you can chew.
What's probably happening is you are trying to like organize your entire kitchen at once.
Well, no, that's not fun. That's a nightmare. That's horrible. Don't do that. That's not fun.
Instead, organize one cabinet or the top of one cabinet in your kitchen.
That's something that's manageable and it's a small enough amount that it's going to only take you like 10 minutes to do,
but you'll still get that feeling of like, yeah, organize something today.
And believe it or not, that 15 minutes every day adds up.
And before you know it, you're tackling, you know, your bathroom vanity or under and in the,
bathroom drawers or under the sink and then on top of your, you know, counter. And before you know,
your entire bathroom is organized. And it's in manageable chunks. They say, how do you eat an elephant
one bite at a time? That is really how I feel about organizing my home. One small little piece
at a time. And because it's fun, it doesn't seem like work. And the other thing is, I'm always
like reorganizing. You're probably going to find a home or you've organized, I don't know,
a little sewing kit and then you discover you have like a dozen more things in another part of the
house that should have gone in there so you might need to tweak it again so i never organize and um
i love it that way but again i don't want it to be my whole life so that's why i stick to 15 minutes a day
so i want you guys that's the challenge i want you this week well it's halfway in the middle of the week
let's say we're starting on the weekend we'll start on friday and you're gonna just write down
seven different areas to organize starting on Friday. So on Friday you're going to do your junk drawer.
On Saturday you're going to do one bathroom drawer. On Sunday you're going to do one kitchen drawer and so on
and so forth. A really small area, one drawer at a time and you're going to see in one week you're going to
feel amazing. You're going to already see the benefits of that small amount of organization that you've done
because you're going to save time every time you're going in that door to access things.
And you're going to just want to continue.
You're going to like get the bug.
You're going to catch the organizing bug and want to keep going with it.
So anyways, I want a little bit about how I just feel the joy from organization, how I got started,
and how I will probably never stop.
That's the truth.
There's nothing else that gives you that immediate gratification.
But I think that this concept really applies to.
everything in life and probably also applies to my biggest challenge, which is fitness and healthy
eating. I just cannot be bothered. Again, it's something that I see as this big, monstrous thing
that, you know, I'd have to spend hours and hours in the gym and I'd have to like eat right
and be healthy for life and that sounds so irritatingly annoying that I just don't even ever bother
are getting started. When in reality, I think now I'm not saying for sure, but I'm assuming that if I
approach this in the same way, I'm probably not going to, but if I did and I started maybe exercising
for just 15 minutes a day, I'm not going to get the immediate results that you get from organization.
I'm not going to work out for 15 minutes and look in the mirror and say, oh man, look at my butt.
It's like, and that's unfortunate because that's one of the best parts of Oregon.
something is that you see results immediately, but it might have the same long-term effect that
organization does. So I guess if I worked out 15 minutes every day and I kept it up for as long as I've
been organizing, which is five years, I probably wouldn't have the same problem that I have now.
And I might even enjoy it like I enjoy organization. And that probably goes for everything in life,
whether it's practicing today or a musical instrument practicing for just 15 minutes a day.
I'm pretty sure that all of that would add up to success no matter what it is that I'm tackling.
And there's lots of things that I want to do.
I want to write a book and I just think, oh, it's so much work.
I'm halfway done and I'm like, oh my gosh, I can't even think about that.
but maybe if I scheduled my time to write just 15 minutes every day, I'd probably have it done in no time,
to be completely honest. So this might be a different approach. I'm an approach that we all need to
take with those dreaded tasks we have in life that we don't want to do and we don't want to get
started. Maybe just 15 minutes a day. I mean, that's probably the amount of commercials we watch
in a one-hour show. So we can all find that much time each and every day.
and who knows maybe our biggest dread or the thing our biggest issue our biggest challenge
can become our greatest success following this method so I say that the thought of me walking on the
treadmill for 15 minutes today is maybe it is yes it is actually yes it is I am going to walk on the
treadmill for just 15 minutes today and you guys listening are going to organize one drawer
That's a deal. We're making a pinky swear like a bet right now. I'll start doing that. I'll start
working out for 15 minutes a day. I'll keep you guys posted. You guys have to organize something for 15
minutes a day. If you're already super organized and love organizing, pick something else.
