Starting point is 00:00:00 I'm Peter Schach, now CNBC. Stocks finished with a mixed session after a back-and-forth day for the major averages. The Dow added 29 points to close at 43,326. The S&P 500 just below break-even, losing 2.5 points. The Nasdaq also with a small loss of just 11 points. The Dow was up for a fifth straight day following its 10-day losing streak, while the S&P and Nasdaq were down for the first time in four days. Netflix shares fell a little less than 1% the day after the streaming service carried its first
Starting point is 00:00:32 ever NFL games. But veteran media executive Tom Rogers says it is another important step in the company's evolution and a sharp contrast to several years ago when many were questioning Netflix's future. They have become the broadest reach global media network, by far the most valuable media company in the world. They are still able, I think, to have catalysts like this. If the subscriber sign-up number is as good as I think it will be. The big question is sports as a catalyst generally for the media industry, how deep is Netflix going to get in? Among the day's stock leaders, Walgreens, this year's worst performing S&P 500 stock, actually led the index with a better than 5% gain.
Starting point is 00:01:14 On the other hand, Broadcom, which has more than doubled this year already, was also among the top gainers, up 2.4%. And two auto stocks were in the fast lane, Toyota up almost 9 percent on a report that it aims to double its return on equity to 20 percent, and Honda up more than 4 percent, adding to recent gains that followed its announcement of merger talks with rival Nissan.
