Starting point is 00:00:00 I'm Jessica Eddinger, CNBC. Wall Street opens Thursday morning after investors shook off the government shutdown and sent the Dow and the S&P 500 index to fresh record highs to start October and fourth quarter trading. The Dow was up 43 points led higher by shares of Merck, which were up 7% Nike shares, up almost 6.5% on strong quarterly results. The S&P 500 index was up 22 points. The NASDAQ was up 95 points. That was almost a half percent. NVIDIA shares up three-tenths of one percent. Companies who shares at fresh all-time highs on Wednesday include Envidia, plus Monster Beverage, Abbey, McKesson, Northrop Grumman, KLA, Lamb Research, Micron, and Well Tower. The government shutdowns, if you look over history, markets, they've actually done pretty well through a lot of the shutdowns. There have been a few here and there that have been bumpy.
Starting point is 00:00:56 but on average, returning somewhere between two and three percent in the three months following a shutdown. So even this isn't necessarily something to be that concerned about. Sofey's Liz Thomas on CNBC. Two big economic reports likely will be delayed because of the government shutdown. The Labor Department's September jobs report is one of them. Inflation is another. That jobs report was supposed to be out Friday morning, but we did get jobs data Wednesday. private sector employment lost 32,000 jobs in September in the new ADP report, biggest drop since March of 2023.
Starting point is 00:01:35 According to ADP, we're in negative territory when it comes to the jobs report. And you saw what happened to the bond market, a big rally there, as well as in the Fed funds where now there's a lot more confidence in an October cut and a December cut as well. CNBC senior economics reporter Steve Leesman, auto sales were good. the third quarter that ended Tuesday? Well, we got a solid quarter for the third quarter. About 16.2 million vehicles. We haven't gotten the final number yet, but there was a time when people were expected the third quarter to be down in the mid-15 million range. That's not the case. And when you look at all of the numbers from the automakers, they were all solid in terms of total sales. But it's the EV sales because of the expiration of the federal EV tax credit.
Starting point is 00:02:19 That's why you saw EVs up more than 100 percent from GM at 100 percent for Hyundai. and then Ford, 30% increase, and that's year over year. CNBC's Phil LeBoe. Peloton shares fell on a revamped lineup with upgraded hardware and a price increase announcement. Peloton raising prices for both equipment and subscriptions. The bike is going to $1,700. A monthly subscription goes up to $50 a month. Five U.S. states are suing real estate apps Zillow and Redfin,
Starting point is 00:02:52 accusing the two of antitrust violations in online rental housing, the suit says the two companies schemed together to reduce competition. The lawsuit follows a similar one filed by the Federal Trade Commission this week. Carnival-owned Holland America Cruise Line will have its first float ever in this year's Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade to mark 80 years of sailing to Alaska. Holland America has been sailing to Alaska since before it was a state. Wendy's added Wendy's tendies to menus nationwide, chicken tenders with a catchy name, and a variety of dipping sauces. On Thursday's watch list, Tesla releases third-quarter vehicle deliveries. Jessica Ettinger, CNBC.
