Starting point is 00:00:00 I'm Jessica Eddinger, CNBC Wall Street, with a winning start to the holiday shortened week. On Monday, major average is all in the green. The Dow up 227 points, a half percent. Drugmaker Merck shares let it higher. They were up three and a half percent. The S&P 500 index, up 43 points a half a percent, its third winning session in a row. The NASDAQ was up 121 points. a half percent. With Christmas on Thursday, the markets will be closed. There's only a half day
Starting point is 00:00:35 of trading on Christmas Eve Day, Wednesday. Markets will close at one Eastern. It's kind of quiet for investors. We're in that part of the year when no news might be good news for stocks. We'll see. CNBC's Mike Santoli. Gold had its 52nd record high close of the year on Monday. Silver also at a record high close. It's 15th of the year. Platinum hit its highest level since 2008. President Trump has halted a number of wind projects, including coastal Virginia offshore wind, the largest wind power project in the United States. Shears of Dominion were lower. Americans shopping for Christmas have discovered store apps in a big way this year, especially right now with Christmas so close. Bopis is your friend. Buy online and
Starting point is 00:01:23 pick up in store. Last minute shoppers are flocking to the apps for in-store pickup. So if you're last minute shopper, and you want to make sure you get the product, a really good way is to use the Walmart app, use the Target app, select in-store pickup, and that way you don't have to risk the delivery times at this point. That's Roth Capitals, Bill Kirk on CNBC, and wow, he says Target, which has been struggling so much. Well, Target may be finding some success with Bopas. Walmart's still very, very strong. Walmart's been strong for a while. It was very strong last year as well, but Target is really the one that's picked up in the last few weeks. It's done much better and it's reached the number three spot in total app downloads, a spot it hasn't held at all this
Starting point is 00:02:06 year. Meantime National Retail Federation head Matt Shea says this past weekend Super Saturday shopping numbers were good. We got off to a great start on Thanksgiving weekend. There's always a little bit of a lull between Thanksgiving and close to the end of December. And we see a big pick up at the end as we did this last weekend, Super Saturday. There's still some shopping to do. And here's Telsey Retail Advisory head Dana Telsey on CNBC. You basically had a Super Saturday. It's definitely a pretty good Saturday. Very good traffic. You need it in order to make the season. On Tuesday's watch list, we're going to get the latest on U.S. economic growth. We get delayed durable goods orders, numbers two. These are things made to last a long time like washing machines and
Starting point is 00:02:48 airplanes. Walmart's deadline for standard shipping to be delivered by Christmas with no extra fee is midday Tuesday. Disney Plus moving up the release of the final two episodes of the Taylor Swift end of an era docu series to Tuesday night. And Tuesday is the seventh biggest shopping day of the year.
