Starting point is 00:00:00 CNBC Business News Update. Market closed Wednesday. I'm Jessica Eddinger. It was a losing day for stocks. Wall Street opens Thursday morning after the Dow fell 113 points. Nike shares leading at lower Wednesday down more than 2%. Shares hit their lowest since 2014 in the $38 range. S&P 500 index lost a point Wednesday. The NASDAQ was down 21 points. Companies who shares at fresh all-time highs Wednesday include. visa and Expedia. Invitya shares were lower in after hours trading on first reaction to quarterly results after Wednesday's closing bell. Earnings beat estimates and revenue more than doubled. But investors are wondering, can it continue? One optimistic investors, Wed Bush's Dan Ives on CNBC. First, I mean, competition, there's one chip in the world fuel in the AI revolution, and it's invidia. And I think, you know, worries about competition. I mean, we see it from every enterprise that's going down the path, the red phone goes to NVIDIA. I don't think anyone's looking at any sort of second and third options.
Starting point is 00:01:06 Salesforce shares were popping after hours Wednesday on first reaction to its quarterly results. Shears were up 7%. Meta shares ticked higher on a landmark court settlement with the attorneys general of 48 U.S. states in its social media child safety addiction trial. Meta will pay billions of dollars, and it agreed to change its Facebook and, to Instagram products when it comes to kids. Here's CNBC's Brian Sullivan with CNBC's Julia Borsden. META is agreeing to product changes, including a two-hour daily time limit for teens, as well as default block for teens at night, as well as muted notifications during the school day and hidden
Starting point is 00:01:48 likes for teens. Now, META has agreed to implement new age assurances as well. The settlement's good. You want to help kids out. I'm not taking anything away from that, But what did people want from this? More money. The coalition of states that sued were originally looking for about $200 billion. So this agreement to pay less than $20 billion is quite a lot less than they were originally looking for. And a lot of people are asking why didn't meta make these changes earlier? I've already been asked that question several times today.
Starting point is 00:02:19 California Attorney General Rob Bonta will join CNBC in a live interview 10 a.m. Eastern Thursday. Assistant U.S. Attorney General Jonathan Cantor says the lawsuit did what parents have wanted for a long time from lawmakers. And the lawmakers didn't get it done. What's most significant about the settlement is the fact that it imposes significant regulatory changes in terms of how it uses data relating to children, how it age gates, how it throttles the usage for kids, shut off during school hours, and a whole range of remedies that really do look a lot more like. a regulatory scheme for social media, one that most of the country has been asking for for years. Inflation came in hot and sticky for July in the PCE. The personal consumption expenditures report. It's the Fed's preferred measure of inflation.
Starting point is 00:03:11 The PCE puts the annual inflation rate at 3.7%. The Fed's target is 2%. Apple announced a launch event for September 9th. It's expected to reveal new phones, watches, and Siri AI. On Thursday's watch list, the Economic Policy Symposium begins in Jackson Hole. Fed Chair Kevin Warsh will speak Friday. Earnings coming Thursday from Best Buy, Gap, Alta Beauty, Dollar General, and Dollar Tree, Burlington, Horamel Foods, TD, Toronto, Dominion, and Pay-in-For provider a firm.
