One event will overwhelm all others Wednesday as the Federal Reserve is set to announce its latest interest rate decision and policy statement.
The decision will come out at 2 p.m. Eastern time, and it's widely expected that the Fed will announce a quarter point interest rate cut.
Former Cleveland Fed President Loretta Mester is hoping Fed members are more circumspect about what happens after the Wednesday decision.
I hope they pause for a while and really assess.
where the economy is going. And I hope that at the press conference, we get a good sense of where
they're seeing the economy going. Counting, you know, dissents and then thinking about, well,
do they have enough to cut again or not, doesn't really tell us how they're thinking about
what the outlook for the economy is. And that should be driving their policy decision.
The Fed will announce its latest rate decision at 2 p.m. Eastern time. In Tuesday's trading,
the Dow lost 179 points to close at 47,560. The S&P 500 slipped six points were a tenth of one percent,
the NASDAQ rose 31 points or 0.1%.
The stock market's immediate fate will likely depend on what the Fed does and says Wednesday,
but Mike Wilson, Chief U.S. equity strategist at Morgan Stanley,
says his firm's deep dive into revised labor market data spells good news for stocks in 2026.
The rate of change on both payrolls and layoffs peaked or bottom,
depending on which we're looking at, in April, right when the market bottom.
So in this narrative that we've had for a while now is becoming a bit more popular because we're looking for a rationale or reason for why the market's done when it's done.
It means the Fed has more room to cut than probably people think.
And secondly, you're going to get a rotation now into the parts of the market that have not performed that well.
That's our call for 2026.
It's a light day for corporate earnings, but we'll see how much people were spending on their pets when Chui comes out with its quarterly earnings Wednesday morning.
Prominent software companies Oracle and Adobe issue quarterly results after the closing bell.
Get the weekly look at Mortgage Applications Wednesday morning from the Mortgage Bankers Association.
This comes amid an unusually high number of home sellers pulling their homes off the market.
