Starting point is 00:00:01 I'm Jessica Eddinger. CNBC, Wall Street opens Wednesday morning, braced for the big January jobs report. And the Dow opens at a new record high, but it was a mixed Tuesday for the major averages. The Dow first, it was up 52 points led higher by shares of Disney, which were up 2.5%. The S&P 500 index was down 23 points. The NASDAQ fell 136 points. Shares of Nvidia were down three quarter. of 1%. Companies who shares hit fresh all-time highs on Tuesday include Hilton and Marriott, Charles Schwab, Caterpillar, tractor maker, deer, Martin Marietta, and Exxon. You know, trading water gets
Starting point is 00:00:44 you tired, and that might be what this market is doing, but so far, it's actually being translated into a steadiness and a resilience with the majority of stocks working. You know, you give it credit, but also be aware of how much it's taken to hold us here. That's CNBC's Mike Santoli. Gold, still sitting above $5,000 an ounce, silver ticked lower. It's sitting around $80 an ounce and Bitcoin around $69,000. It's a jobs Wednesday with the delayed January employment report coming Wednesday morning from the Labor Department after a number of data points showing a weakening job market. What happens with the jobs data will be telling because, right, the latest job data is showing some softening. So I think that, you know, we kind of want to see stability in that
Starting point is 00:01:28 number and that will impact what the Fed does. That's Defiance. Sylvia Jablonsky on CNBC and EY Parthenon's Gregory Draco tells CNBC if people aren't working, they're not spending. And the U.S. is a consumer economy with consumer spending, making up about two-thirds of U.S. economic growth. I am paying very close attention to what's happening on the labor market, where we're seeing a deep freeze, which will feed into income and constrain consumers for the rest of the year. Ford out after the closing bell on Tuesday with its worst quarterly earnings. miss in four years. But with an upbeat forecast, its shares were ticking higher in after-hours trading.
Starting point is 00:02:08 Robin Hood, down 9% after-hours on its quarterly results. What happened to Christmas? Retail sales numbers for December came in flat from November, worse than expected, and the worst since May of last year. Retail sales, these are December numbers. Headline, expected up four tens, comes in light. Zero goose egg unchanged to find a lower number. You're going all the way back to May of last year. So not good news on retail sales. CNBC's Rick Santelli. Boeing delivered 46 jets in January, marking the third highest number for any January in Boeing's history. Company logged 103 net new orders in January. That's the best January for orders since 2012. Boeing delivered 46 aircraft last month. 37 of those were 7,000.
Starting point is 00:02:59 37 maxes. Order backlog now sits at 6,196 aircraft. CNBC's Carl Kintanilla. The Trump tariffs cost the average American household about $1,000 in 2025, according to the Nonpartisan Tax Foundation. The data show the average family will pay $1,300 extra in 2026 because of the tariffs. On Wednesday's watch list, as we mentioned, The jobs report for January will be out. Earnings are coming from Hilton, Kraft Hines, T-Mobile, and McDonald's. And the Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks enjoy a hometown victory parade on Wednesday. Jessica Eddinger, CNBC.
