Starting point is 00:00:00 I'm Jessica Eddinger. CNBC. Wall Street opens Friday morning after investors shook off a hot inflation number. The S&P 500 index is at a fresh record high by one point. The Dow closed down 11 points recovering after being down more than 200. The S&P 500 index up a point. The NASDAQ down two points. InVIDIA shares were up about a quarter percent on Thursday. Companies who shares at fresh all-time highs Thursday include electronic arts, which makes Madden 26, the video game is just out, and Ticketmaster Parent Live Nation Entertainment on news of a new Taylor Swift album and hopes another tour could happen at some point. Some investors say markets can absolutely go higher. There has been a political undercurrent and the fear of the policies and investor sentiment
Starting point is 00:00:53 being at rock bottom in March and April has not fully wound out of the market yet. and you a lot of investors, what would have we? $7.5 trillion in cash on the sidelines, simply waiting for something to change. Starting point is 00:01:15 the Trump administration could take a stake in the company. Here's CNBC's Aiman Javers and Scott Wapner. Bloomberg is reporting that the U.S. government is in talks to take a potential ownership stake. in Intel. It really sounds extraordinary. The idea that by virtue of a government investment into a private company, you'd essentially have part of Intel's business being nationalized. Yeah. I mean, what you'd be looking at is a semi-nationalization of a major American company. This is the kind of thing. A Republican administration of a past generation simply wouldn't have
Starting point is 00:01:52 looked at. This administration believes that the president has the authority to tell companies what their HR policies should be, who their CEOs should be, how they ought to conduct their business, where they should build their plants, et cetera, et cetera. The insurance industry. Watching the first major storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, the forecast for Aaron at this point was not to make landfall. Inflation went up more than forecast in July in the PPI. That's the producer price index, a measure of inflation at the wholesale level. Headline number is whoppingly big.
Starting point is 00:02:25 Oh, my goodness. of a percent. Boy, that equals June of 22. The COVID distorted numbers. So we see every single metric is warmer than expected. Every single metric is significantly higher sequentially. CNBC's Rick Santelli investors worry that producer price increases can be passed down to consumers and show up as consumer inflation down the road. A24's drama, highest to lowest.
