Starting point is 00:00:00 I'm Jessica Eddinger, CNBC, a record-setting day on Wall Street today. The Dow back in the green, up four points. It's been going back and forth. It's being led higher now by Amazon shares, which are up more than 2% this afternoon. The S&P 500 index up 32 points. The NASDAQ up 207 points. That's almost 1%. Both the S&P and the NASDAQ have hit fresh all-time intraday highs today.
Starting point is 00:00:29 NVIDIA shares in the red but down just about a tenth of a percent off their earlier lows this afternoon. Retail sales numbers coming tomorrow. Fed decision on interest rates on Wednesday, investors want to see a cut. Alphabet has become the fourth U.S. company to cross the $3 trillion mark behind NVIDIA, Microsoft, and Apple. They had a very clear clearing event with the antitrust ruling just several weeks ago. that lifted sentiment dramatically. That brought a lot of people in from on the sidelines. Vertus investments Joe Taranova on CNBC. President Trump posting about trade talks with China in Europe hinting a deal may move Chinese own TikTok into U.S. hands. Here's CNBC's Carl Kintanilla. A deal was also reached on a certain company that young people in our country very much wanted to save.
Starting point is 00:01:21 They'll be very happy. We'll be speaking to President Xi on Friday. Meantime, the Treasury Secretary on the tape a few moments ago discussing a potential deal on TikTok. I think the framework is for it to switch to U.S. controlled ownership. But again, I'm not going to get ahead of the leader's call on Friday. We have a framework. They'll have to confirm the deal. That's Treasury Secretary Scott Besson there. He does say China has not yet agreed to any deal.
Starting point is 00:01:51 Tesla shares up about 5 percent today as England. Lon Musk buys about a billion dollars worth of Tesla shares. It is unusual for Elon to buy shares. Elon buying two and a half million shares on Friday, totaling around $1 billion. It was his first purchase of Tesla stock since 2020 is being taken by the market as a big sign of confidence in Tesla's future. CNBC's Robert Frank.
Starting point is 00:02:18 Coffee hit its highest since April as bad weather and tariffs hurt the commodity. Coffee prices up nearly 4% in Big U.S. cities in the new CPI report from last month. The highest monthly gain in 14 years, as Americans just pay more for their cup of Joe. Brazil is the top source for coffee coming into the U.S. It's one of the most heavily tariffed countries. KPMG's Diane Swank told CNN, coffee prices will easily beat records as the full effects of the tariffs work their way onto store shelves. Underwater car trade-ins are at a four-year high. More than a quarter of all car trade-ins toward the purchase of a new car
Starting point is 00:02:58 had negative equity in the second quarter of 2025, according to Edmonds. Negative equity on a car loan is when somebody owes more on the car than what the vehicle's worth. Drivers trading in upside-down cars have to pay the balance owed in cash or roll that balance into their new loans, which digs Americans farther into. to debt. Jessica Eddinger, CNBC.
