Starting point is 00:00:00 I'm Jessica Eddinger. CNBC Wall Street hire now in morning trading. The Dow up 214 points being led higher by shares of Salesforce. Those are up almost 5% this morning. The S&P 500 index up 33. The NASDAQ up 145 points. Shares of Nvidia in the red down almost a half a percent. Investors are waiting for a possible Fed interest rate cut next week. Mixed to consumer. Sumer sentiment numbers out today from the University of Michigan following the reopening of the government after the shutdown core inflation for three months ago. September hit 2.8%. That was a tick lower than expected in the PCE and the Personal Consumption Expenditures Index, delayed for three months because of the government shutdown. Netflix emerges as the high bidder for Warner Brothers discovery. It would get the movie studio and streaming business. and spin-off Discovery, which is a bunch of cable channels. Here's Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos on a call today.
Starting point is 00:01:07 I know some of you're surprised that we're making this acquisition, and I certainly understand why. Over the years, we have been known to be builders, not buyers. We already have incredible shows and movies and a great business model, and it's working for talent, it's working for consumers, and it's working for shareholders. But this is a rare opportunity that's going to help us achieve our mission to entertain the world and to bring people together.
Starting point is 00:01:30 through great stories. And here's a take from Lightshed's Rich Greenfield on CNBC. If you think about Netflix, the engagement has stagnated a bit, you know, and I think one of big investors' biggest concerns has been, why is engagement not growing faster? YouTube has been the one that has just literally been exploding, taking share. Netflix is looking at this going, there is so much under-exploited IP in this company. How do they use Warner Brothers to re-accelerate the, overall engagement growth and time spent.
Starting point is 00:02:02 There is just so much stuff. Now, a Netflix purchase of Warner Brothers would need government approval. Netflix is not favorably viewed within this administration. I'm now being told by a senior administration official. The first blush reaction that we are getting is heavy skepticism. So how does that materialize? I think in the Department of Justice antitrust process. But I think if President Trump wants to flex here, and he often does,
Starting point is 00:02:27 There are a whole host of other elements of executive power that he could bring to bear in a way that we just typically wouldn't see in a normal administration to put quote marks around the word normal there. That's CNBC's Amin Javvers at the White House. Southwest Airlines is cutting its outlook, blaming the government shutdown and higher fuel costs. Alta Beauty shares are popping on a better full-gear sales outlook. Victoria's secret shares were higher. It lost less money in the last quarter than expected. Twitter, now X, has been fined $140 million by the European Commission over what it calls a deceptive blue checkmark for users and a lack of transparency. The find comes a day after the Commission announced its investigating Facebook parent meta for allowing AI companies to scrape data from WhatsApp, which it says is secure and private.
