Starting point is 00:00:00 CNBC Business News Update Market Open Thursday. I'm Jessica Eddinger. Wall Street is in the green this morning. The Dow up 35 points out of the gate being led higher by shares of Salesforce. They're popping 15% this morning. The S&P 500 index is up 21 points. The NASDAQ up 175 points. That's a half a percent. NVIDIA shares up 5% out of the gate this morning.
Starting point is 00:00:28 Last night after the closing bell, NVIDIA, report. at blockbuster quarterly results, boosting investor confidence in artificial intelligence. Here's CEO Jensen Wong last night on CNBC's Mad Money with Jim Kramer. AI is now useful. It's doing productive work. And the tokens that are being generated by these AI labs are now profitable. People are paying good money to use it because it's really productive. It's helping them, you know, do things and be more productive. Invidia earnings are giving a lift to other chip stocks too. boosting second quarter earnings and revenue above expectations and giving better than expected guidance.
Starting point is 00:01:02 Salesforce also announced what it's calling Claudeforce, a plug-in for Anthropics flagship AI model that can write emails on behalf of salespeople, arm them with information and update records through chat functions. Those shares are still down roughly 30% since its record closed at the end of 2024, despite today's boost. That's CNBC's Dominic Chu. One chip name in the red today, AMD, down about nine-tenths of a lot. percent. Meantime, the American chip makers may also be reacting in a positive way to a report that says the Trump administration's considering new tariffs on imported chips. Politico says the tariffs could cover servers, laptops, and gaming hardware. People familiar with the matter told that news outlet. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnik is said to be in favor of giving foreign countries relief from the tariffs if they decide to invest more in U.S. production. White House telling Politico, quote,
Starting point is 00:01:56 ensuring semiconductor manufacturing's top priority for President Trump. That's CNBC's Andrew Ross Sorkin. Reshoring Chip Manufacturing began in the Biden administration with the Chip Act, and the existing tariffs on Chinese-made chips were enacted under Biden. Salesforce, as I mentioned, leading the Dow hire today on AI growth and a gain from the Anthropic investment, its quarterly results were strong. Best buys quarterly results better than expected, as computing shows sales strength for that retailer.
Starting point is 00:02:28 Dollar General shares popping more than 10%. It raised its full year outlook and news on a share buyback for that company. Oil ticking higher today, U.S. crude up more than a half percent, pushing toward $83 a barrel investors are weighing what's going on with the Strait of Hormuz and the U.S. war with Iran, which is set to enter a seventh month. AAA says the national average is sitting at $4.10. a gallon. The 2026 economic policy symposium starts this morning in Jackson Hole,
Starting point is 00:03:00 Fed Chair Kevin Warsh, with a highly anticipated speech there tomorrow. Slightly fewer people applied for unemployment benefits last week in what's considered a low higher, low fire job market. Initial jobless claims, 203,000. That's down 4,000 from a slightly revised, 207,000. This is just a couple of thousand less than expectations and continues to be a range that is highly from a historic perspective low and very much describing a jobs market that has no flashing yellow or red.
