Starting point is 00:00:00 I'm Jessica Eddinger, CNBC. Wall Street is mixed this morning out of the gate. Investors are waiting for the latest on inflation later this week, a possible Fed interest cut later this month, all after a very weak August jobs report, and they're all connected. We know inflation, and that August CPI gets reported this week, maybe elevating, but that the markets are going to begin to view that as transitory,
Starting point is 00:00:28 whereas the weakness in the labor market is, know once it begins to weaken, it's very hard to reverse that momentum. So I think it's important for the Fed to intervene quickly. Fundstrats Tom Lee on CNBC. The Dow is down 50 points led lower by shares of Verizon this morning. They're down 2%. The S&P 500 index up 11. The NASDAQ's up 99 points a half percent. Invidia shares are up 8 tenths of 1%. The S&P 500 index is getting two new names. Robin Hood and Apploven will be joining the SMP 500. Now, these two will officially join the index in two weeks, replacing Caesar's entertainment and market access holdings. CNBC's Sylvana Hanow.
Starting point is 00:01:11 Secretary of State Scott Besson says he's confident the Supreme Court will uphold President Trump's tariffs. Here's CNBC's Giuliana Titlebaum in London. Besson told NBC's meet the press a delayed ruling striking down the levies. could leave the Treasury having to repay up to $1 trillion in tariffs that would have already been collected. Besson said there is a backup plan if the court ruling does not go their way. I am confident that we will win at the Supreme Court, but there are numerous other avenues that we can take. The number of packages coming into the U.S. has plunged by 80% now that the tariff exemption for items under $800 has ended. That was the de minimis rule.
Starting point is 00:01:54 The Universal Postal Union says more than, And 80 postal operators have stopped packages from coming into the U.S. until a way to collect tariffs is implemented Chinese shipments to the U.S. of all values in August, plunged by a third. Later today, we get new data on consumer credit, including credit card delinquencies and a measure of how Americans are doing with their auto loans and personal loans. Tesla's market share in the U.S. has dropped to its lowest in eight years. The U.S. on pace to lose about $30 billion in international tourism this year as the country's political environment continues to deter foreign travelers from visiting. The U.S. International Trade Administration says the drop in Canadian visitors alone will be nearly 20%. 500 select target stores will stay open until midnight local time Thursday, October 2nd, to sell Taylor Swift's Life of a Showgirl album. That's according to variety.
Starting point is 00:02:55 Brothers Conjuring Last Rights won the weekend box office and marks the seventh straight film by that studio that's opened above $40 million.
