I'm Peter Shack now, CNBC.
Stocks remain mixed as the Federal Reserve's latest interest rate decision draws closer.
The Dow is up by 231 points at 47,791.
The S&P, only a little bit above break-even, six points higher than NASDAQ, down two-tenths of a percent or 44 points.
When the announcement comes out at 2 p.m. Eastern time, investors expect the Fed to have cut interest rates a quarter point.
But policymakers may not be able to provide as much clarity on.
their forward outlook as they usually do.
Due to the government shutdown, that disrupted data collection,
Diana Peterson is chief economist at the conference board.
Right now, we're in the dark when it comes to data,
and we don't even know when some of the data are going to be coming out.
And so it's very difficult to get a handle on where the economy is right now
and where it's going.
And so I think lots of people are just hedging their bets and saying,
well, worst-case scenario, we get another inflationary story next year
because there's so much dissension on the Fed.
Chipmaker NVIDIA is denying a report earlier this week
that a Chinese AI startup known as Deepseek
was using smuggled NVIDIA chips
to develop its new artificial intelligence model.
NVIDIA says that it has not seen any substantial evidence
that this is in fact happening.
NVIDIA shares are down 1.5% today.
Shares of file storage company Dropbox are down 4%.
Chief Financial Officer Timothy Regan is stepping down
after five years on the job.
