Because I've got to
to go back to some vacations.
Ah, and where has been?
Well, no, very long, the truth.
No, no, no, I'm going to find out of Italy,
nor States, or not?
So, that you have been here in Scotia?
I've got here in Scotland,
in a island that I'm a lot, a lot of,
They're quite
close
of where we

well you
can't
you can't
you can't
visit you

like
there's
there
there
palmeras

in Scotia
in Scots
well
well
well
well
and the
really
is that
it's
it's a
it's a
when you
when you
when
you're
when you're
You know, you're the impression
that you're in
in other
place?
What I mean.
You know a
thing.
What you
know, one
one of a
one of the
I mean,
I'm going to
and I'm going to
do you know
on the side
the road
Well, no me
I can't

then
So if it's
so I think
to make a
visit to
this island
in Scotland
and we've not
even mentioned
our island in
Spain where
our story is said
Majorca
Majorca indeed
and of course
if you happen
to be joining
us for the first
of our time
you'll be wondering
what on earth
is going on here
I'm Mark
I am the teacher
here theoretically
and I am here
with Carmen
who is our native
speaker
and we're presenting
a story
a story with 40 chapters
and we're
on chapter 33 today.
Our story is, of course,
following the adventures of Rory,
Alejandro, and Maria
in the island of
Majorca, and today we're going to be
listening to an episode
where it's an email from Rory
to Alejandro.
So, we're going to
our text.
We're going.
Alejandro, how you go,
companion?
Maria and I, we are
we're quite atariated
since you've been.
In the hotel,
even there's much
I'm doing
I'm doing
many hours
and I'm
doing this
really.
Maria is
agotated
because
he's substituting
to a
companyer who
is still
doing two
turns.
Apart, we
have we
have done
interviews
with the
press and
we're
invited to
a event
official
the
next
with
with
famous
with
all.
Can you
believe it?
In
this
this fiesta
there
will
there's
a
person
will
do
a
discourse,
we'll
give the
thanks and
they'll
give them
the first of
the
money,
I'm told,
and I'm
to decide
in what
university
I'm
matricul to
make a
thesis.
Maria and
we are
talking
of plans
of future,
but
we don't
we're
very clear,
so
I don't
where
I'm in
two
months.
In
your
Tierra
Argentina,
who knows,
you
maintain
informed.
What
How did you
your voyage
to
London?
And what
day
you'll
go to
see?
I'm
think we're
not
we're
not quite
some
days
of
Europe.
That
life
more
Dura.
This
year,
I'm
a
Saturday,
and Maria
is
at the
time,
so
for the
morning
I'm
going to
do
soon
to do
do
and
over the
two
to
go
to
at
Palma
to
come
to
a
a
Maria.
I'm
that's
innamorated
of a
vestige
in the
unil
the
car at the
house
St.
Michael,
and I
thought
he'll
be
a illusion
to
get it
to be
a
great-s
good
piv.
I'm
going to
the
time and for the
time and
I'll have
some
some
guides of
Latin America
and
revista
the
business.
The
fact
I'm
like
planific
the
I always leo
much
before
to decide
to where
I'm
then I'm
going.
I'll
gogered a
day
intense.
It's a
day intents.
Alexander,
has been a
pleasure
to be
you and
pass some
days with
you.
Apart to
having
a
treasure,
clear.
Escribe
me
and
tell us
how you
go.
A
brother
a
brother.
Well, the
The truth is that me
a bit of
a little bit of
a bit of
not be with
Rory and Maria
but I
have the
hope that
he's
now off
in London
so he'll need
to make sure
he doesn't
drive on the
wrong side of
the road.
Yes,
like you
for example.
But let's have
a look back at
our text and
we'll do this
in English.
In this
episode of course
we're reading an
email from
Rory to his
friend
Alejandro who
as we know
has recently
left Majorca
after their
exciting discovery
in the
Balei Ariric
C's.
Rory begins by asking Alejandro how he is.
He explains that he and Maria have been pretty busy since he left.
There's lots to do in the hotel workwise.
Rory is working quite a few hours and he's pleased at least that Consuelo is nice to him.
Maria is a bit worn out because she's filling in for a colleague who is ill.
So she's actually working two shifts at the moment.
Maria is agotada because she's substituting a
a companion who is
a friender so
he's
doing two
turns.
Apart from
all the work,
they've also
got some
other things
to keep them
busy too.
They've been
doing interviews
for the
press and
they've been
inviting to
an official
event next
Friday
with famous
people and
everything.
There will be
lots of
important people
there will be
speeches,
they'll thank
Maria
and Rory
and Alejandro
in his
absence of
course
and they'll
give them
their prize
their award.
They've even
told Rory
that he'll
receive
special recognition for the discovery. Rory also mentions to Alejandro that he has to make a
decision as to which university he's going to choose for his PhD. He's been talking to Maria about
plans for the future, but they're still not quite sure, so he doesn't know where he'll be two months
from now, perhaps even Alejandro's native land, Argentina. Rory will keep Alejandro informed.
He asks Alejandro some questions about what he's been doing since he left Majorca.
was your voyage
to
London.
And what
day
you
will be
a
Argentina?
I think
to
remember that
there
on us
years of
going to
London
to spend a
few days
before
returning to
Argentina
Argentina.
He's still
got a
few more
days of
being a
tourist
here in
Europe
with his
friends
before
going home.
Rory
explains that
he's off
work
on Saturday
but Maria
is working
until 8.
So he's
going to
go for a
dive in
the morning
and then
head over
to Palma
at lunchtime
because
he wants
to buy
Maria a present.
He knows that she loves a particular dress that he saw in a shop window in the Cady San Miguel,
one of the main shopping streets in Palma,
and he thought that she'd like to wear it to the party.
While he's there, Rory will have something to eat in the centre of town,
and he'll also visit the library to have a look at some guidebooks and travel magazines
to find out some information about Latin America.
He says that he likes planning journeys and always likes to read lots before deciding where to go.
He'll then pick up Maria from work,
and they'll go out for dinner.
It will be a busy day,
but as Rory says,
you have to make the most of your days off.
Serra a day intense,
but we have to
have to use the days
librae, no?
Rory finishes his email
by saying that it was a pleasure
to spend a few days
with his friend,
not just because they found the treasure.
He asks Alejandro
to write back soon
and to let Rory and Maria
know how things are going.
Okay, we'll be back in just a moment.

Well, very
Yeah,
I like much
Very good
Okay,
we're going to
Let's go
a little
to think a
a word
that we've
used to
in this
part of
What is
that
is the
word?
Kedar.
There was a
part where
Rory had
said to
Alejandro,
I think
that you've
still got
some days
left.
I think
that you
are
some
few days
of
Europe.
So I
believe
I remember that you still have some days left, some days of being a tourist in Europe left.
Que os-quedan, on those quantos days of tourism.
Now, Kedan, or Kedar, is a little bit tricky because we've got Kedar and we've also got
falter.
And there are sometimes two words that mean the same thing.
Sometimes they have slightly different meanings.
Let's think about Kedar, first of all.
how would we say, for example, there's still lots to do?
Okay, we'll give them a minute.
We'll give them a minute.
Perhaps not a minute, ten seconds.
Okay, our listeners have had more or less ten seconds.
How would you say there is still lots to do?
Could we say,
there much to do?
But not, there much to do something.
Also, so keda much for to do.
Keda gives the idea that,
some of it has been done, but there's still some left that has to be done.
Okay?
There's much to do.
In general, yes.
But Keda much for doing means that we've done some of it, but there's still lots left to do.
Okay.
But we can also use Kedar when we're talking about there being time left until a particular
thing.
For example, I'm thinking of it's a month until Christmas.
Okay.
How would we say that?
Keda a month
for that's
Okay
Keda a month
for that
Yeah
And in this case
Mark
you can also
use
Falta
a month
for that
yeah
So in this
case
when it's
there's a month
left
or when there's
a period of
time left
we can use
both
Keda and
Fata
Keda
a month
could we
just say
Keda a
month
for
Navid
So we
don't need
to
for
that
never
no
you don't
need to
say the
whole thing
So,
Keda a
for Navidad.
Falta
a month
for Naviida?
So there's one
month left
until Christmas.
Keda or
faata here.
And let's see
there for if our
listeners can
translate something
else using that
idea and just
watch this
because we're changing
it's not one
month,
but in this
case we're going
to be telling
you it's
three days.
So something's
going to
happen to the
verb.
How would you
say,
this is your
challenge,
it's three
days until your
birthday.
It's three
three days until your birthday.
Okay, it's three days until your birthday.
Let's use Kedar.
So listen carefully again.
Kedan three days for your
korean, with an N on the end, because it's the third person, plural.
The subject is three days.
Three days are left for your birthday.
Kedan three days for your birthday.
But we could also say,
say here,
Fal tan three days
for your
kufliann.
So using
falter in this
one too.
But there are
sometimes,
and this is
the little bit
confusing thing here,
there are
sometimes when
falter and
kedar mean
different things.
I'm thinking
of an example.
Let's say a group
of friends go
to the theater.
Okay.
And they have
booked a certain
number of seats.
Can you give
us two different
sentences using
Falta and Kedar, describing two different situations.
Let's think about entradas.
We're looking at tickets, entries for the theater.
Let's have your two sentences.
Falton three entradas.
Okay.
And Kedan three entrades.
Okay, two very different situations.
One in which you've got a problem.
Why is positive?
Yeah.
And why is negative.
In fact, you've got something to sort out in both situations.
Yes.
Let's go to Faltan 3 Entradas.
Let's imagine there are 10 people going to the theatre.
Ten people have turned up at the theatre.
In the case of Faltan 3 entradas, how many tickets do you have?
7.
7.
Yeah, that's the crucial bit.
Faltaan 3 entradas.
Three tickets, entries are needed.
Are missing in that sense.
Faltan.
However, if the sentence were, Kedan 3 entradas,
and those 10 people had arrived at the cinema, or the theatre rather, how many tickets would you have?
You have 13.
You've got 13 because you've got three left over.
Kedan.
And there's another word that we could also use there.
Sobran three entradas.
Sobran three tickets.
Spare.
Spare.
Yeah.
Superfluous.
Some word linked to Sobran.
Okay.
So think of that very carefully.
Kedan, faltan.
Sobran, sometimes they mean the same,
sometimes especially when you're talking about things like tickets or seats or something like that,
then you can be caught out.
You need to make sure you buy the right number of tickets.
Yes.
