Starting point is 00:06:05 Okay, let's get on with the lesson. Okay, for that all the world understand perfectly what is going to be now to explain a little in
Starting point is 00:06:16 English what has been in Ruey's email. He has much to tell Alejandro because a lot has happened since their last
Starting point is 00:06:23 communication. By this time Alejandro will be in Norway as Rudy says Disfrutando Del Frio and the
Starting point is 00:06:29 Fjordos enjoying the cold and the fjords. It's Alejandro's last week of traveling
Starting point is 00:06:34 before returning to Argentina and it's time for Rory to count the most recent events of his Mayorkan summer. Rory and Maria have attended this special event which took place in the government buildings in Palma. The event was attended by the Scottish Consul, the president of the Balearic Islands and lots of important people from the world of politics.
Starting point is 00:06:53 As Rory said, there were also lots of beautiful people, including models and actors, and he even managed to get the autograph of his second favourite tennis player, Rafa Nadal. also. We have much people wapa, a
Starting point is 00:07:07 model and a other and I got the autograph of my second
Starting point is 00:07:11 tenista favorite Rafael Nadal. We have to of course assume that Rory's
Starting point is 00:07:16 favorite his first favorite tennis player would be his fellow Scott
Starting point is 00:07:20 Andy Murray of course he goes on to tell Alejandro about
Starting point is 00:07:23 what happened before he and he and Maria left
Starting point is 00:07:26 for the event after after lunch he had arranged to
Starting point is 00:07:28 meet Maria in her parents house and when he
Starting point is 00:07:30 arrived she was a favourite dress had been caught in the washing machine, so she had no idea what to put on. Rory's rather foolhardy response to this was to laugh, and when met with Maria's understandable fury, he presented her with the gift that he had brought her, the dress he had already mentioned to Alejandro in a previous message. Maria was both delighted and furious at the same time. Rory had hoped that by waiting to the last minute it would be a great surprise for Maria, but in retrospect he probably would have made a better impression.
Starting point is 00:08:04 if he had given her the dress a bit earlier. Anyway, she looked fantastic when she came out of the bathroom wearing the dress. It had been worth the wait, although Rory by this time was a little bit worried that they would be late for the event. It turned out that he had nothing to worry about. They arrived on time, both very elegant, and he promises to attach a photo with his email to Alejandro, and they enjoyed delicious canopies while chatting to sportsmen and women, actors and other people that Rory didn't know. Maria was very excited and indeed, according to Rory,
Starting point is 00:08:36 she was the prettiest girl there. However, Rory was very nervous. He spent the entire time asking Maria to translate what people were saying over the microphone until they called him to the stage. I was so nervous that he pedia all the rato that me traduher to the English,
Starting point is 00:08:51 all what they said for the microphone, until he was shaking like a leaf or wobbling like a flan. The only thing thing he managed to say was thank you very much to Maria and Alejandro. Without them I wouldn't have been able to find any treasure. Not bad to get a pluperfect subjunctive in there despite his nerves. Everyone applauded, he smiled and he came down from the stage having collected a medal in recognition of his achievements. Rory goes on to explain that he's heading home to Scotland for a couple of weeks
Starting point is 00:09:22 to see his family and friends. He'll recount the whole story to them and... Les dirie that Maria and I will go to Buenos Aires in a month. Yes, they've finally made. made their decision. Maria and Rory are going to Argentina. He's been in touch with an esteemed professor from the University of Buenos Aires who has confirmed that he'll be delighted to support Rory with his PhD. So it seems that within a month they'll be seeing Alejandro in his native city. Rory promises to write again when things are a bit calmer in Scotland. He hopes that Alejandro enjoys his final week in Norway and he's looking forward to hearing all about his northern adventure.
Starting point is 00:09:59 And yeah is that. Well, Menos mal that Rory had a regal
Starting point is 00:10:04 and that was a because I know what had been pasted if not had been
Starting point is 00:10:10 a yeah. At the same time he did wait a little too long I
Starting point is 00:10:14 think to give the person yeah if I would have done yeah
Starting point is 00:10:19 she's obviously quite a patient person okay let's go back to the
Starting point is 00:10:25 phrase where Rory was saying that he was constantly asking Maria to translate for him. Let's hear it again in Spanish, Carmen.
Starting point is 00:10:34 I was so nervous that he had all the rato that he tradujara to the English, all what they said for the microphone. Okay, so I was so nervous that I was always asking her, talking about Maria,
Starting point is 00:10:48 that she translated everything that they were saying on the microphone for me. That's from the verb traducer. and it's a quite irregular, imperfect subjunctive tradugera. She could equally have said tradugese.
Starting point is 00:11:06 But there we're looking at pedir to someone to do something. In English we say to ask someone to do something, but in Spanish we need to say to ask someone that they do something. So it's a different construction there to ask someone that they do something. Pedi to ask a al-alien to make a something.
Starting point is 00:11:26 So let's see if we should. can use our translation skills here and see if our listeners can come up with a couple of translations using this construction. And we're going to go both times from English and to Spanish, but one is going to be in the present and then another is going to be in the past. So, Carmen, can we have our first translation sentence in English, please? I keep asking you all the time to tell me what to do. Okay, I keep asking you all the time. So we're using a similar phrase to the one we've just seen in the passage, I keep asking you all the time to tell me what to do. Have a good translating that.
Starting point is 00:12:15 Okay, it's quite tricky to translate because this idea of keep doing something, we're going to use a continuous tense in Spanish. I keep asking you all the time. We could translate that as saying, Te'estoy piding to do the rato. Mm-hmm, very good. I am asking of you all the rato all the time
Starting point is 00:12:40 and then the second part was that you tell me what to do so we need to change that into Spanglish and then we'll need to say something like I keep asking you all the time that you tell me what to do
Starting point is 00:12:57 doesn't sound as natural in English when we say that but it helps us translate it into Spanish that you present subjunctive what I'm
Starting point is 00:13:07 what I'm to do what I'm so I'm so I'm so I'm so
Starting point is 00:13:12 I'm that I think I do you do you make good okay
Starting point is 00:13:19 okay next one let's move on to our slightly more difficult one
Starting point is 00:13:24 which is going into the past how many times have I asked you
Starting point is 00:13:28 to let me come home late this sounds like the kind of thing that a teenager would say to as are her parents. How many times have I asked you to let me come home late?
Starting point is 00:13:40 It gets quite tricky into Spanish there. How many times have I asked you to let me come home late? Okay. How many times have I asked you? Quantas veces te'e pedido or perhaps os I've pedido if you're talking to parents. How many times do you have pedido or os have been? To let me come home late. Okay, so we're going to be talking about
Starting point is 00:14:17 Volver to Come home Tarde late. But we're using this to let me come home late. So I think this would be, how times I've paidido, or you've paidido, that me dejaras, if it's the one person, that me dejara's, that if it's two people, Very bien.
Starting point is 00:14:40 Volver to house Tardé Very well Mark and now the whole thing together
Starting point is 00:14:44 Oh, how times you have said you know, I'm perfect Omar well,
Starting point is 00:14:51 and if it were the the Vosotros for I'm talking to both my parents
Starting point is 00:14:55 how times you're that I think me to come to
Starting point is 00:15:02 great good I hope our listeners managed with that as well
Starting point is 00:15:04 quite tricky stuff but you're doing very well much thanks
Starting point is 00:15:08 Okay, that's where we're going to leave this episode of Coffee Break Spanish. Of course, for our premium listeners, there's lots more.
