Starting point is 00:00:00 Hello, goodas, what how? I'm Pablo of Coffee Brick Spanish and today me to come to me to try this mini-lection. This week I was preparing a text and I came across the English verb to get. And I thought,
Starting point is 00:00:19 Madre my, how difficult is to get to get to the word to get to the Spanish. But why? Because the It isn't one single verb in Spanish that always works when translating to get.
Starting point is 00:00:36 Instead, you need to think about the real meaning in context to find the correct verb in Spanish. And that is exactly what we're going to do at continuation. Venga, let's. We're going to start with two examples. But these two examples with the verb to get in English need a verb different in Spanish. If you want to say in Spanish, I got a new job last week.
Starting point is 00:01:16 Here, God means more achieve. If this is the case, then get is going to be translated as So I got a new job last week would be Consigui a new job last week the same last year ago. All clear, no? Well, the
Starting point is 00:01:42 next example in English is My brother got a bike for his birthday. Now, in this case, God means more like received. because he received that bike as a gift. If that's the case, we simply use the verb to receive in Spanish.
Starting point is 00:02:07 Therefore, to say, my brother got a bike for his birthday, you would say, My hermano received a bicycle new for his cumplea years. So we have already seen that to get can talk. into two very different Spanish verbs.
Starting point is 00:02:28 One is, Conseigneur when we mean more achieving or receive when we mean more receiving. However, things get a little bit more complex with prepositions. Because in English, you can add on, up, in, to get. But in Spanish, we have specific different verbs for this.
Starting point is 00:02:55 For example, if you want to say they get up early every morning, we are going to need the lovely reflexive verb, Levantarse, which means to get up. So they get up early every morning is se levantan tan, pronto or temprano, cada, cada, cada, cada. Now, if you want to say he doesn't get on with his mother-in-law, to get on with someone is get on with someone is get-on-been-con-al-gien. Then you would say, El no se lea-le-been with his suegra.
Starting point is 00:03:50 He doesn't get on well with his wife. is moderate law. If you want to say you got off the train at the wrong station, then we need to say to get off from somewhere. You got off the train at the wrong station is te bahastey del train in the station equivocada. Similarly, imagine that you want to say to a friend of yours, get on the bus is about to leave, because maybe you really don't want to miss that bus, then we need the verb subid a to say to get on somewhere. In this case, the bus. Then to say, get on the bus is about to leave, you would say, Sube to al-Aubus. It's a point to do to go.
Starting point is 00:04:45 Well, and these are only some examples that are the different ways of to get to get to the word to get to
Starting point is 00:05:02 something. Mastering the meanings of get with a preposition what we call phrase alverbs in English such as to get on, to get off, to get into, is really difficult
Starting point is 00:05:13 for learners of English too. I still struggle with this. Well, what do you if we're going to give you three sentences that use the verb to get in English? And then you need to translate them into Spanish, but every single one of them will require a different verb in Spanish for to get.
Starting point is 00:05:37 Venga, let's. The first phrase is, we got a table at the restaurant. Now, think carefully. about what we really mean by we got in this particular case so that you know exactly which Spanish verb we need. We got a table at the restaurant. Traducelah.
Starting point is 00:06:04 The response is, Consegimos a mesa in the restaurant. And we are using consigneur because we are really saying that we achieve in the sense that we secure a table in the restaurant. Very well, the next phrase is, She got off the bus in the city center. The response is,
Starting point is 00:06:31 She Bajo, or she was, she was, del, the bus in the center of the city. So here, got off refers to leaving the transport.
Starting point is 00:06:45 So we use backerse de. So, so he's backho del autobus. Vena, One last phrase.
Starting point is 00:06:55 They get up late on Sundays. Se levantan, tard, or they're late on those dominoes. Now, you know that to get up means levantarse,
Starting point is 00:07:18 that also is a verb reflexive. Se levantan, they get up. Very well. Now, if you have a enjoyed this little translation challenge, don't forget that you can also practice even more with

Starting point is 00:08:03 in many different ways depending on the context in Spanish. For example, to get can be consigir if we mean to get something in the sense
Starting point is 00:08:13 of achieving it. To get can also be receiving if we mean to get something in the sense of receiving it. And then we have several phraseal verbs that translate into Spanish using a different Spanish verb.
Starting point is 00:08:31 For example, to get up means to get on well with someone. We say, Leverse bien conalien. To get off a train or a bus, we would say, Bajarse de. And to get on a bus, for example,
Starting point is 00:08:53 we would say, Subir to, in this case, Subir to Al-Autobus. Well, well, that's all for I really hope
