Starting point is 00:00:00 Welcome to Coffee Break Spanish. I'm Annabelle, and I am very excited for today's little espresso episode in between main seasons of Coffee Break Spanish. Now, last week we celebrated a colleague's birthday, and something they said really sparked my inner teacher. They said, me ago major. I'm becoming older. It was said in a jokey way, but every time I hear someone saying those words on their birthday, I always reply the same thing.
Starting point is 00:00:41 No, te aces major, te aces, mas sabio. You're not becoming older, you are becoming wiser. Well, so far, not many people looked convinced about my words. But this little exchange made me think of the verb Acerse and how we can use it in Spanish. So, let's a etcharlé a vis-a-a-se is a reflexive verb and it's quite versatile.
Starting point is 00:01:17 The first use I want to highlight is the one my colleague used. Acerse to mean to become. Now, there are different ways to translate to become. in Spanish, but we choose to do aserse when we want to express a change in age, like in this case, profession, wealth, religion, ideology, and so on. Let's see some other examples to put this into context.
Starting point is 00:01:47 The first one is, Clara, she has made doctora, and she's doing very rich. Clara She has done doctora.
Starting point is 00:01:59 Here we can see the perfect tense of the verb Acerse. And it means Clara has become a doctor. It continues
Starting point is 00:02:10 saying and She is She is the continuous tense we are using Star
Starting point is 00:02:18 plus the gerent of Acerse Se is doing very rica and she's becoming
Starting point is 00:02:25 she's getting very rich. Then Clara she has made doctora and she's making a doctor and she's getting very rich in the sense of she's becoming very rich. Perfecto. And also in the sentence we can see
Starting point is 00:02:43 that after a certain, we can have a noun doctora or an adjective rica. Now let's see another example because I know this can be a little bit tricky. The next one is, Te has et ceteraano?
Starting point is 00:03:02 Te has eto, here again, the perfect tense of the verb, Acerse, and pay attention to that te has et eto. Remember, that is a reflexive verb. This means, have you become vegetarian, vegetarian? Have you become vegetarian?
Starting point is 00:03:19 Te asetio vegetarian. And here, after Acerse, we have the adjective. Vegetarian. Perfect. Now is when the fun starts. Now is when the fun starts. Because by adding the preposition a to Acerse, we get one of my favorite verbs,
Starting point is 00:03:42 and it's very easy to use. I'm talking about Acerse a, which means to get used to something. It is actually very similar. to accostumbrarse a. And in fact, both are interchangeable. And if this is the first time that you hear Acostumbrarse a, don't worry,
Starting point is 00:04:07 because it works like acerse a. So here you have two verbs for the price of one. Now, both verbs mean to get used to something. Beamos an example. Now, if we want to say, I cannot get used to cold winters, we are going to start by using the verb So we say, no, me ago, a los inviernos frios. I can't get used to or I don't get used to called winters. No me ago a los inviarnes frios.
Starting point is 00:04:49 Here we are using the verb, to be a no me ago a and then those inviverns if we
Starting point is 00:04:57 want to use accustomer a then it will be very similar no
Starting point is 00:05:02 me accustom to those imbiones frios both sentences no
Starting point is 00:05:08 me do me ago a those and no me
Starting point is 00:05:11 accustom to those both mean I cannot get used
Starting point is 00:05:17 to cold winters well well well well very Now, what if we use the preposition gone instead of a?
Starting point is 00:05:28 Acerse gone means to obtain something difficult to get. In the majority of the cases, we can translate it as to manage to get something or to manage to obtain. Let's see this in context in our example. Te has Echchegu Yeah With the concert
Starting point is 00:05:49 For the Has Echchon is have you managed to get then we have that yeah that is going to be translated
Starting point is 00:05:59 as yet and then las entradas for the concert tickets So it means have you managed
Starting point is 00:06:08 to get the concert tickets yet? Remember that that yet is yeah Te has
Starting point is 00:06:14 Echtoe with the entrances for the concert. Well, as you can see, Acerse is a
Starting point is 00:06:21 very versatile verb and can be combined in many ways. There are other interesting uses of Acerse in
Starting point is 00:06:28 Spanish. In fact, we explore one use of Acerse that is a little bit more advanced
Starting point is 00:06:35 in Coffee Break Spanish Level 4. So if you want to continue improving your Spanish and to get
Starting point is 00:06:42 to know this verb a little bit better, be sure to check that out. But we haven't finished yet. No we've finished yet. We're going to repassar what we have seen today. We are going to review what we have seen today.
Starting point is 00:06:58 But you are going to help me. I'm going to tell you the infinitive of the verb, the structure, and you'll tell me how we translate it. So the first one is Acerse followed by an adjective or a noun. How do we translate this? Yes, s, to become. To become is a-se plus an adjective or a noun.
Starting point is 00:07:24 Perfecto. Now, Acerse-a. A-ser-se followed by the preposition a. Yes, yes, we translated as to get used to. And for extra points, do you remember the other way we can say a in Spanish. Acostumbrarse a. So
Starting point is 00:07:51 Acerse a and Acostumbarse a both mean to get used to. Estupendo. Now the last one. Acerse con. How do we translate? Acerse followed by the
Starting point is 00:08:07 preposition con. Eso is. To obtain something difficult to get, so to manage to get something or to manage to obtain something. Well, very good work.
Starting point is 00:08:27 Menudo episode. I think that is all for the moment. If you would like to keep improving your Spanish,
