Starting point is 00:07:23 For the less you're content because she want that
Starting point is 00:07:27 she wants the time the speaking in the panadier I would have all the time
Starting point is 00:07:34 talking with the people. That is true. Look, I'll be with my jeffe in the morning myself. Thank you. Much thanks.
Starting point is 00:07:43 And for the of the fiesta, yeah we'll talk about. Yes, yes. Oye, me have to

Starting point is 00:08:05 by telephone with Fiona, her her amiga of Scotia. She's really nice and I think she's going
Starting point is 00:08:12 to get me a job at the bakery where she works. Cool. Or should I say very bien? Estes practicando your Spanish? Yeah. I'll need to for when I come to visit you.
Starting point is 00:08:24 Thence pass to be near? Hang on. I'm going to be near 5th of Augusto. That bien. Listen, I'd better go. It's expensive to phone. Laura, before you go,
Starting point is 00:08:39 I was just wondering. What? I was just wondering. if you'd heard from Jack. No, actually. I thought he'd have texted me today. Why are you asking? No reason, it's nothing. Anyway, I better go.
Starting point is 00:08:55 Hang on, my phone's just beeped. Maybe that's him now. Oh my goodness. Jack wanted to have a break. Did you know about this, Fiona? Oh, Laura. I'm so sorry. It's just that I saw Jack last night with Lucy. and well he didn't really seem like he was missing you much.
Starting point is 00:09:15 What? I need to go. Well, every telenovela should have a good cliffhanger at the end of an episode. We'll need to wait until episode 15 of Showtime Spanish to find out what happens. Okay, we'll be back in just a moment. As someone who's working on Spanish at an intermediate level, you may also be interested in our Coffee Break Spanish magazine podcast. This is a podcast for intermediate learners, and we focus on texts, which allow you to develop your linguistic knowledge and also your cultural knowledge.
Starting point is 00:10:13 We have presenters from Spain and also various parts of Latin America, so you'll be building your understanding of different accents throughout the series. Find out more about the Coffee Break Spanish magazine at coffeebreakacademy.com. Okay, let's get on with the lesson. Hopefully you've recognised a lot of words and phrases that we've covered in previous weeks in Showtime, Spanish. in this episode of Verano-Spaniel. Did you notice, for example, that when Laura talked about her mastery of the Spanish language,
Starting point is 00:10:55 she said, me defianto, me las apano, a couple of phrases that Jose had used in his intermedio. And how did Teresa describe the state of the house after her son's party? She described it as Echa an disaster. Hopefully you recognized a number of other phrases that we've covered in Showtime Spanish
Starting point is 00:11:14 within this episode of Verano Español. And as usual, there are full notes in this week's lesson guide which is available from the website. Now, with Verano Españo, we do things slightly differently. I have seven questions for you there in Spanish, and you're going to be working with me to produce answers to these questions. And hopefully the questions and answers will help you understand further the story of Berano Español. Let's begin. Pregunta No. Uno
Starting point is 00:11:43 Quin is Teresa. Okay, so that's a fairly straightforward question. Who is Teresa? But Teresa is Ayona and Laura's neighbor. Teresa is the Becina of Ayona and Laura. Or Vesina, depending on where you are.
Starting point is 00:12:08 So she lives in the next door house, in the house next door. And if you go back to the episode where we were talking about my experience in Gerona, when the person on the next table was smoking. I spoke about la Mujer in la Mesa de alado. So in the next door table, it works the same way with houses.
Starting point is 00:12:31 So she lives in the next door house. Vive in la Casa de alado. And finally, add in that she's Estela's mother. Is la Madre de Estela. So the whole answer to that question, Who is Teresa, could be something like, Teresa is the Beena of Aona and Laura
Starting point is 00:12:55 Bive in the house of the side of Estella Number two How Conoce Teresa A Antonio? So we could say that Teresa knew
Starting point is 00:13:17 Antonio when they were children. Let's think about the tense here. Which tense would we use to say Teresa knew Antonio when they were children? Well, it's describing a situation in the past and it's not something that happened suddenly as part of a narrative. So we would use the imperfect,
Starting point is 00:13:40 but the imperfect tense of which verb? There are two verbs in Spanish for to know, Saver and Conozer. Which one would you use here? It's Conocer, because Conoer is to know a person. So Teresa, Connocia, in the imperfect or Connocia, a Antonio, I have to use the personal a there.
Starting point is 00:14:04 Teresa Conoccia a Antonio when they were children. Which tense? The imperfect again. So the imperfect of to be, and which to be is it? Is it ser or estar? It's ser, of course.
Starting point is 00:14:22 So, when they're ninos. Teresa, conocia a Antonio, when they were nineos. Let's practice our tense is a little more using the verb Conocer. How would you say, Teresa got to know Antonio last year?
Starting point is 00:14:44 That would be Teresa Connocio, Antonio, El A year, so Connocio, preterate tense, or connocio. And what about Teresa got to know Antonio this week? Well, the phrase this week should probably trigger in your mind the perfect tense. So this week, this week, this week, this week, Teresa ha Conocido
Starting point is 00:15:15 Antonio or a Conosido Antonio This Semana Teresa has known
Starting point is 00:15:22 Antonio So the perfect tense is very often triggered by the This Semana
Starting point is 00:15:28 this week or this morning or this afternoon or even this month and so on
Starting point is 00:15:33 Let's move on our next question Number 3 What so
Starting point is 00:15:39 So what does the question mean What What happened a noche last night? What passed a noche? Well, Teresa's son had a party.
Starting point is 00:15:57 I would we translate that into Spanish. So Teresa's son had a party becomes the son of Teresa gave a party. El I'm sorry to teresa, dios a fiesta. The preter tense. the is, El Iho de Teresa di a fiesta. Okay, let's continue.
Starting point is 00:16:26 Now he has gone on holiday with his friends. And here I'd like you to use irse de vacations. So, irse is the reflexive form of the verb, ir. So now he has gone off on holiday. The tense should be the perfect tense.
Starting point is 00:16:46 Now see a-hido of vacations with his or now has gone his
Starting point is 00:16:55 and everything is left up in the air, meaning the house is a disaster. We could say
Starting point is 00:17:05 and the casa is made a disaster. I wonder if you can remember the other phrase
Starting point is 00:17:10 that Jose Totas everything has been turned upside down. It had something to
Starting point is 00:17:15 do with animal feet or paws. You could say to patas
Starting point is 00:17:23 up. So we would say now he has gone to go a vacation with his
Starting point is 00:17:28 friends and all this patas ariva and let's add in Teresa is
Starting point is 00:17:34 not happy Teresa not she's do the whole answer so what
Starting point is 00:17:46 so what was a night Teresa's son had a party the his
Starting point is 00:17:52 his his his his now he's gone off on
Starting point is 00:17:57 holiday with his friends and everything's upside down now
Starting point is 00:18:07 she has gone to vacations with his friends and all is a patas Ariva Teresa isn't happy
Starting point is 00:18:16 Teresa not is content The child the child of Teresa did a fiesta now
Starting point is 00:18:25 has gone with his friends and all is up stuff there's not
Starting point is 00:18:30 she's very well then then we're going to the
Starting point is 00:18:35 number four question number four why is about
Starting point is 00:18:40 Avergonzaida, Estela. Avergonsada is one word to say embarrassed. Dar berguenza to embarrass someone. So why is Estella embarrassed? Well, she was embarrassed because her mother wanted her to speak in English. So how would we say Estella is embarrassed because her mother wants her to speak English? So to begin with, Estella, is her mother wants her to speak English.
Starting point is 00:19:28 So there are two subjects here. So it's her mother who's wanting, but it will be her who will be doing the speaking in English. So we need a subjunctive. Her mother wants that she speaks in English. Her mother wants that she speaks in English. Estella is avergonsada. because her mother
Starting point is 00:19:54 wants that she has been so we could add to this Laura explains that her father also does the same Laura explains that her father also does the same
Starting point is 00:20:12 so Laura explains that her father also does the same does the same, does the same, So what's happening in Puerto Azul this weekend? Well, Estella is going to a party. Estela va a una fiesta.
Starting point is 00:20:51 Let's try the next part. She wants Laura to go to. But Laura will have to speak to her mom. So she wants Laura to go to would become she wants that Laura goes to, using the subjunctive. Hele that Laura Vaya coming from I hear Kere that Laura
Starting point is 00:21:17 via too But Laura will have to speak to her mom But Laura Tendra Kuala Kovlar with her mother Remember in Spanish About with her mother
Starting point is 00:21:30 As opposed to Abla to her mother So the whole answer Estela va a Fiesta Hele that Laura Bia too Laura Tendra can
Starting point is 00:21:40 talk with her mother So what idea has Stella To help her Laura with her problem of Dinero? So what idea does Stella have To help Laura With her little financial problem. So
Starting point is 00:22:13 Estella wants Laura to work in the bakers. Again, another double subject here, so more subjunctives. Estela wants that Laura Traveh in La Panaderea. So Estela Kere that Laura work in the panadier.
Starting point is 00:22:40 She wants that Laura works in the bakers. Her boss is looking for someone who can work two or three days per week. So her boss, Su jefe, is looking
Starting point is 00:23:02 we can use the progressive here. Ista buskando for someone. Now, buscar is to look for, but remember here, we're looking for a person, so we need a personal a. Su Jfe is basquezs a buzcando a a person, and this is tricky,
Starting point is 00:23:20 who can work two or three days per week. We've got to ask ourselves, does this person exist? We don't yet know if this person exists. So there's an element of doubt there, therefore we need a subjunctive. So, So,
Starting point is 00:23:34 So, that is looking a person to work two or
Starting point is 00:23:39 three days a day to a time. So, so he's
Starting point is 00:23:43 looking to work to work two a day to a
Starting point is 00:23:47 day. Let's run through that one again. So the question is,
Starting point is 00:23:51 what idea has what idea to help Laura
Starting point is 00:23:56 with the money. Stella wants Laura to work
Starting point is 00:23:59 in the Beakers. Estela wants that Laura, I work
Starting point is 00:24:07 in the panaderia. Her boss is looking for someone who can work two or three days per
Starting point is 00:24:14 week. Her jefe is looking to someone that can work two or
Starting point is 00:24:27 three days a day. And finally, question number seven, what has
Starting point is 00:24:35 Fiona? So, what has Fiona seen seen? What has Fiona seen? Well,
Starting point is 00:24:47 Fiona has seen his boyfriend with another girl. Fiona ha vista al-novio de laura
Starting point is 00:24:57 remember we need a personal in there and of course Laura's boyfriend becomes the boyfriend of Laura so Fiona
Starting point is 00:25:05 ha vista al-novio of Laura with another girl with another girl con otra chica Fiona have visto
Starting point is 00:25:14 al novio of Laura with another chica so that's where Venano Spanish was left
Starting point is 00:25:19 this week and that's where we are going to leave it too. So that's it for another episode of Showtime Spanish and indeed, a second episode of Marano Español. There will be more from Laura and Estela and everyone else in Marano-Spaniel in episode 15 of Showtime.
Starting point is 00:25:45 In the meantime, we'll be back with more normal Showtime content, in fact, after the holidays. The second season of Showtime will begin mid-January.
