Starting point is 00:08:49 Hello, carino, how are you? But I thought you couldn't come. I thought you had to work. Ah, that was my little secret. It's so good to see you. And to you too, carino. Laura's going to be so surprised to see you. Well, the thing is, she knows I'm coming.

Starting point is 00:09:22 We'll see us tomorrow, then. But what puneas is doing this man here in my house? Antonio! And for what will go to live tomorrow? Well, another episode of Verano-Spaniel.
Starting point is 00:09:54 And in this episode, I think Antonio he's got the wrong end of the stick here with the Fontanero, who has been helping Ayona fix the
Starting point is 00:10:07 griffo that gotiando. Okay, we'll be back in just a moment. Starting point is 00:10:49 dot com. Okay, let's get on with the lesson. Now, as usual, we would suggest that you listen again to see if you can understand a little more of the episode of Benano-Spaniel if you've not understood it all first time. But to help you understand it, I've got some questions, and we're going to work through these questions together to see if you can answer them in Spanish, clear. So, question number one. What Acaba
Starting point is 00:11:29 to Passar at this episode So the question means What has just happened Acabar
Starting point is 00:11:41 to do something What has just happened At the beginning of this episode of this episode So let's imagine
Starting point is 00:11:51 We want to say that Laura has just realized Now we know what to realize
Starting point is 00:11:58 us It's to give oneself account of something. So, Laura Acaba Da'Arse Kenta. Laura
Starting point is 00:12:10 Acaba De Darce Kenta And what has she realized? Well, she's realized that the boy that she likes is her neighbor. Laura Acaba de Darce Kenta of that?
Starting point is 00:12:28 The boy that she likes the chico that he likes so we have to turn that around the chico that he likes the boy which to her pleases the chico
Starting point is 00:12:46 that is her neighbor is his his vecino Laura has to know that the child that the
Starting point is 00:12:57 child that he likes is his and Iona doesn't understand what has happened so Aiona doesn't understand
Starting point is 00:13:19 and Ayona no entiente what has happened in Spanish we have to change that to be that which has happened what has happened so the whole thing Laura has just realized
Starting point is 00:13:38 that the boy that she likes is her neighbor and Iona doesn't understand what has happened Laura Acaba to know
Starting point is 00:13:58 that the child that the child is his second. the question is, of course, why does Estella arrive?
Starting point is 00:14:29 Laura thinks of her brother. Now, the word for according to someone is Segun. So, according to Laura, Estela wants to know, Segun Laura. Estela wants to know what Laura thinks of her brother. So, Estella wants to know what Laura thinks of her brother. So this has to be that which Laura thinks of her brother. So, according Laura, Stella wants to
Starting point is 00:15:20 what Laura thinks of his brother. Or alternatively, Estela want to what
Starting point is 00:15:29 thinks Laura of his brother. Now there is a little complication here and that is the use of
Starting point is 00:15:37 his hermano. If we didn't know the context, then Su-E-Rmano could mean
Starting point is 00:15:43 here Laura's brother or Stella's brother. Segun Laura, Estela wants to know what Laura says her brother.
Starting point is 00:15:54 Because we're just seeing her brother. So there is an element of doubt here, and we could solve it by saying Estela wants what
Starting point is 00:16:03 Laura thinks of the brother of Stella. It does sound a little clumsy, a little awkward like that.
Starting point is 00:16:11 So probably best just to stick to according Laura, Estela wants to know what Laura thinks of his brother. Okay, number three. What does Estella
Starting point is 00:16:24 of his brother? So what does Estella say about her brother? Okay, let's take this step by step. Estella thinks that her brother is very much a womanizer. There was a word in the
Starting point is 00:16:41 conversation in the episode of Venano-Spaniel. That was the word that is used for a womanizer. Now, in English, we actually use a noun, a womanizer, but in Spanish, the word is an adjective, Mujeriego. So you can describe someone as much Mujeriego. So Estela thinks that her brother is a very womanizing boy, if you like. Estela thinks that her mano is very mucheriego.
Starting point is 00:17:13 And she tells Laura to be careful with him. So she tells Laura We would be better to use a double object here So le dice a Laura She tells Laura to be careful Now you'll remember last time we talked about Telling someone to do something The second verb has to go into the subjunctive
Starting point is 00:17:44 Le dice a Laura That Tenga Cueda Tener Cuyado To be careful Le dice a Laura that has a cuidado So she tells Laura to be careful with him.
Starting point is 00:18:01 Le to say a Laura, that he will fall in love with the next pretty foreigner who arrives in the village. Now this is quite tricky. Because he will fall in love because he will fall in love. Because he will enamorara
Starting point is 00:18:26 to fall in love, enomorarse. Ennamorara, he'll be enamorara of la Proxima Linda Extranera. So you will fall in love with the next pretty foreigner who arrives in the town. Now, are we 100% sure that this person will arrive or not? No, in which case we need to make sure then we're using the subjunctive.
Starting point is 00:18:57 La Proxima Lina Extranjera that he arrives in the town. With arrive, those movement involved, therefore is al-Pueblo. So let's run through this again. Estella thinks that her brother is very womanizing. Stella thinks that her brother is very womanizing. And she tells Laura to be careful with him.
Starting point is 00:19:27 He le dice to a Laura, that he takes care of him, because he will fall in love with the next pretty foreigner who arrives in the village. Because he'll be enamorara of the next linda extraangera that hege to the pueblo. Okay, Pregunta number four.
Starting point is 00:20:08 Antonio Viener or no vienna? So we're asking here, is Antonio coming or not? So, let's answer this. Antonio has told Iona that he can't come because of his work So Antonio Le has said to Ayona Antonio has told
Starting point is 00:20:41 Ayona that he can't come because of his work. That no Puebeen because of his work for his work. For his travel. Por is used in this sense through or because of.
Starting point is 00:20:59 for his job. However, Laura knows that he will arrive tomorrow. Sin embargo, Laura
Starting point is 00:21:18 knows that he will come tomorrow. So Laura knows that he will arrive,
Starting point is 00:21:26 future tense, will come a and it will be a surprise for Iona's
Starting point is 00:21:33 birthday. So it will be a surprise will be a surprise, it will be a surprise, for the birthday of Ayuna, for Ayuna's birthday, for the Cumpleaños, of Ayona.
Starting point is 00:21:52 In the conversation in Venano-Spaniel, we used a shortened version of Cumblyanus. Well, question number five, What is the problem with the griffo? And why has it to go back the fontanero? So we're asking here, what is the problem with the griffo?
Starting point is 00:22:17 What is the problem? problem with the tap. Why he has to go to make to make to make
Starting point is 00:22:23 a want to the fontanero? The plumber have to return
Starting point is 00:22:29 tomorrow. So we could say the plumber has to return tomorrow the
Starting point is 00:22:43 fontanero has to go to come because he doesn't
Starting point is 00:22:48 have the washers of the correct size. The washers are
Starting point is 00:22:54 las arandelas. He mentioned arandela a few times. He doesn't have the arandelas of the correct size. The Fontanero has to go over tomorrow because
Starting point is 00:23:09 no has the arandelas of the timeo correct. He doesn't have the arandelas of the correct size. And finally, number six, why is surprised
Starting point is 00:23:26 Antonio, So the question means, because he's surprised, why is Antonio surprised? Al enter in the house, al entering the house, al enter in the casa. So the answer here would be Antonio sees the plumber
Starting point is 00:23:55 and he doesn't know what this man is doing in his house. So Antonio sees the plumber Antonio Mbe Al-Fontanero Now remember it's Al-Fontanero because there's a personal a here
Starting point is 00:24:17 Antonio Mbe Al-Fontanero and he doesn't know what this man is doing in his house and no know what he's
Starting point is 00:24:29 doing this man in his house so he doesn't know what this man is doing in his house. No sa be what is doing this man in his house. We could equally have said here,
Starting point is 00:24:45 and no save what he's doing this man is doing in his house. And he doesn't know that which this man is doing in his house. Now remember that if you say, no sabe what is doing this home in his house, then what would have to have an accent on it. Because it's
Starting point is 00:25:04 almost like reporting the speech of Antonio, what is that this man in my casa? Que? Obviously here would have an accent because it's a question. So when we're reporting the speech,
Starting point is 00:25:15 we also have to put an accent if we're reporting it directly with the ke. However, if we say no save lo what's doing this man in his house, then we don't have to put an accent on ke, because
Starting point is 00:25:29 here, lo kee replaces the ke. Now, again, this has been quite a long episode of Showtime Spanish because we've gone through what's happened in Menano Español in quite some detail. I'm not going to go through too much of the language covered. There's plenty of information in the notes for this week, but I would like to mention a couple of things. First of all, some things that we've come across in previous lessons that you've probably heard in this episode. The first of these was when Estella offered to suggest to her
Starting point is 00:26:04 mother that she goes to pick up or to fetch Antonio at the airport. And she used, I'd pour. She said, Could I preuntar to my mama, that via a por el? I could ask my mom to go and fetch him. Podria preuntarle to my mama,
Starting point is 00:26:26 that by her aporel at the airport. Now, when Laura heard this, she said, Ask her. Go ahead and ask her. her. And she used the fact that you have to combine the le and the lo, because she's really saying ask her it. And in Spanish, when you say ask to someone it, you have to combine the le and the lo, and you have to make it into ce lo. Preguntaselo. Ask her. Estella replied by saying, to her with say replacing le
Starting point is 00:27:09 it I will ask I'll ask her I'll ask her se lo preuntary the other thing I wanted to pick up on was the use of the subjunctive forms for the imperative
Starting point is 00:27:26 in the two form and the negative for example no se as tonto Don't be silly. No seas tonto. And the other example of this in the recording was, No le digas nothing to my mama.
Starting point is 00:27:47 No le digas nothing to my mother or my mom. No le digas nothing. So digas being the subjunctive of decied, but in this case it's used as the imperative in the negative. don't say anything to my mom. No, let's say nothing to my mom.
Starting point is 00:28:16 Well, has been a episode very, but very long, this time. I hope you've enjoyed the episode
Starting point is 00:28:25 of Verano Español this time, and you'll have to wait until episode 30 to find out what happens with Antonio and
Starting point is 00:28:32 the plumber and also with Estela and Laura and Angel and Ramon and everyone else. Now,
Starting point is 00:28:38 some parts of the Verano Spanish episode this week have been really quite tricky, particularly the conversation between Laura and Estela.
