When you're flying Emirates business class, enjoying a good night's rest in your lie flat seat,
you'll see that your vacation isn't really over until your flight is over.
Fly Emirates, fly better.
Welcome into college football live.
I'm Victoria Arlen.
Let's go out the tunnel.
There were major playoff implications on the line in the Ohio State versus Penn State game,
and with talent across both sides, we break down why it seems like head coach James Franklin can't get it done.
Plus, Georgia barely survived Florida and see where our concern level is with the dogs and
QB Carson Beck after yet another multi-interception game.
And it is the day we've all been waiting for.
And no, no, no, we're not talking about Election Day.
The first CFP rankings drop tonight, and Heather Dinnich is here to tell us how this weekend's
results have implications for what's to come.
This is College Football Live.
Let's go.
Welcome to College Football Live, presented by Google Pixel.
We've got the best, though, to help me navigate the chaos.
You've got Desmond Howard, Sam Acho, and of course, Heather Dinnich is with me,
and this is the last show before the first official college football playoff rankings,
which will be revealed tonight, but more on that later.
But we have to get to the chaos between Ohio State and Penn State,
because the Buckeyes kept their Big Ten championship hopes,
live with a huge 20 to 13 win over the Nittney Lions.
And Penn State offense came up empty in front of a record 111,000 fans
with the only Nittney Lion touchdown being scored by a defensive pick six.
Now big game struggles continue to mount for Penn State with Saturday's loss.
Now they're just now one and 13 against 80 top five teams under James Franklin.
And they've also gone just one in 10 against Ohio State in that span with the lone
win coming in 2016.
Here's what Franklin said after Saturday's loss.
I understand their frustration.
Guys in a locker room are just as frustrated, if not more, but college football has changed.
And we have an opportunity moving forward to write some wrongs from today.
And that's what we're going to focus on.
That's part of the job.
And I own it all.
I own it all.
I mean, Des, who do you think should be taking ownership of this loss?
Well, I tell you guys what, throughout the season, all the talk about Penn State was about their offense and about their new OC and Nicole Nicky and how he brought all this, like all these, you know, motions and shifts and all these eye candy to the offense, how creative he was and how Drew Aller was just really thriving in this new offensive system.
So I never heard anybody talk about, man, James Franklin is calling a hell of an offensive game.
I couldn't believe James Franklin called that play
and got Tyler Warren the ball, blah, blah, blah.
Everything going into Saturday's game
was about the creativity of the new OC Andy Koloniki.
So for them to only have one touchdown
and it wasn't scored on office,
it was actually a pick six.
I understand.
The head coach is always going to take all of the heat.
But we wasn't talking about James Franklin
calling offensive players how great if he was.
was, especially inside the five-yard line.
They couldn't punch it in, and they came up with some gimmick plays
where this offensive lineman number 71 kept going into motion,
and he didn't even block the soul.
So I understand.
I know how the game is played.
The head coach, he takes the brunt of all the criticism.
But I think Andy Cole and Nicky, in the play calling that game,
he should be partly responsible for the outcome.
Well, Dan, to your point,
Andy Kodoniki, he was creative, but Ohio State and their defense just never took art class.
They didn't fall for any of the tricks or any of the gimmicks that Penn State usually uses.
We saw the Pribula package, Bo Pribula in the backfield.
We saw Tyler Warren as well.
None of it worked.
So many defense talk about this idea of bend, but don't break.
I think that's what Penn State did defensively.
They bet they didn't break.
Ohio State defensively didn't even bend.
And so for me, I think more of the credit needs to go to the Ohio State defense for not falling for the tricks,
not bending in one way, shape, or form, and being ready for the challenge that Kodolniki did,
in fact, provide.
You saw shifts, you saw motions, you saw crazy formations, how Ohio State wasn't fooled one bit.
Now, it felt like Andy Kolecki drove the ship straight into an iceberg, and the only
touchdown for Penn State was by the defense.
Now, on the Ohio State side, now with this win, what challenges are left for them this season?
For Ohio State?
Yeah.
I think the biggest challenge is Indiana.
I mean, I think people are not really giving Coach Signetti
and the Hoosiers the respect that they've earned up to this point.
I mean, they're still undefeated.
And this is the team, guys.
Obviously, saw him a couple of weeks ago against Washington.
Game Day was there.
And they actually had to play their backup quarterback.
And they still looked like a whale oiled machine.
We're not talking gimmicks.
We're talking about a team that's going to come at you with their running game.
They have two great running backs.
quarterback is playing a very high level.
So I think that's their biggest test coming up.
Don't sleep on the Hoosiers when they visit the shoe November 23rd.
Yeah, but it'll be another opportunity, Des for the committee and Ohio State to build some trust.
What do I mean by that?
Trust is earned.
It's not given.
And so we saw that Ohio State had an opportunity to try and build trust versus Oregon.
They didn't win that game.
But then fast forward, this game versus Penn State.
you build a little bit more trust, but then they get tested again.
And if they pass that test for Indiana, all of a sudden, so much more trust is built.
And so we talk about this idea of trust being earned versus given.
Ohio State has test after test after test.
So far, they pass the most recent one.
They'll have another huge opportunity in a couple weeks.
I guess we'll still find out.
Now, I want to bring in Heather.
Heather, how does the result of this game impact how the committee might view ranking these teams tonight?
finally got the statement win that it desperately needed for its playoff resume.
So they make a case as the committee's top one loss team ahead of Georgia.
And when they meet, they will compare Ohio State's win against Penn State with Georgia's win at Texas.
Cough Cough Cough, Ocho, which one is a better win?
And they'll also wonder which is a better loss.
Ohio State went on the road and lost by one point to Oregon, which should be the committee's top team tonight.
Georgia losing to Alabama, not a bad loss at all, but those are the things that they will talk about when they meet with those teams.
As for Penn State, the Nittany Lions are in a very precarious position.
That was their best opportunity to impress the selection committee.
They struck out, so down the road, they better win and win with style.
There's going to be a lot of tough decisions tonight.
There was also a lot of upsets over the weekend.
Stick around, Heather.
We have a lot more to discuss with you.
Let's get to some upsets over the weekend.
Starting with Lenores Sellers and Rahim Sanders who powered South Carolina to a 24 point win over 10th ranked Texas A&M, and it was the Gamecox's third largest win against an AP top 10 team of all time.
Minnesota clinched bowl eligibility for the fourth straight season with its win over 24th ranked Illinois.
It was the Gopher's largest road victory against a ranked opponent since beating sixth ranked Ohio State in Columbus by 12 points in 2000.
In the Big 12, Texas Tech handed number 11 Iowa State its first loss of the season with a 23 to 22 win in Ames.
Saturday was the Red Raiders first win over a team 7-0 or better since 2008 against top-ranked Texas.
Elsewhere in the Big 12, Houston also knocked off number 17 Kansas State in Manhattan.
The Cougars trailed by nine entering the fourth quarter and they had lost 12 straight games when trailing by nine plus points entering the fourth quarter.
And in the ACC, Lurieville beat number 11 Clemson, 33 to 21 for its highest ranked road win in school history.
It was also the card's first ever win against Clemson.
And here's Dabo today reflecting on that loss.
You know, because it's more fun when you win.
But the reality is, we're, you know, five and one in our league.
There's 17 teams in this league.
You know, we're not out of it.
We don't control the destiny, but we control our decision on how we're going to rest.
respond how we're going to practice what we're going to do about it this week. That's what we do
control. So let's focus on what we control, block out the rest of it, and get back to work.
Did not nearly show how bad Clemson was beat, nor did that response from Davo. He seems like
he's clearly moved on. But Sam, where did it go wrong for Clemson?
Well, it just seemed like a blast for the past. It seems like this Clemson team played like they did
last season where the offense wasn't that.
The defense wasn't as strong, at least last week, as we had seen in the past.
And so for me, the explosive plays were not there.
You saw a few blocked field goals, right?
Special teams, all of a sudden, they were, there were mistakes on special teams.
Offensively, defensively, defensively on special teams, Clemson did not show up.
And here's the issue.
The issue is, this is the last game that the committee is going to see before the first
ranking comes out.
Now, the positive deal is the last time Clemson lost, they won, I think it was a five or six
game winning streak. Of course, it was against Georgia who they lost to and against inferior
opponents, but this is another opportunity where you get a chance after a loss to show the committee
week after week that you can get it done on offense, not just on defense.

I'll tell you what, Sam.
The style points have to play a role in this.
You look at the Louisville game
and they only had one touchdown
through three quarters.
They scored two touchdowns late in the fourth quarter
to make it look like it was more competitive
than it actually was.
You look at the first game of the season.
I know it's Georgia.
but people shouldn't say, well, it was Georgia.
I mean, because it was Clemson.
So Clemson was supposed to be on the same level as a Georgia.
They're not supposed to get blown out of waters 34 to 3.
So style points, I think, have to play their part in these games too.
You know, we talked earlier about Ohio State losing one point on the road against Oregon.
That's style point.
So their defense, man, I tell you what, Sam.
I'm not really sold on this defense and offensively.
Phil Mafa, he's going to get his, he's consistent,
but they don't have any playmakers that I've seen so far on the perimeter,
and I think that's really hurting their offense, Sam.
And then, well, to your point, you're right.
Clemson is not at the same level of Georgia right now.
I think that's why these comparisons are showing that they're not one of those top-tier teams.
Now, the question is, will they still be able to be in that conversation, right?
Defensively has to be better, to your point.
Mafa's going to get his, but offensively, you have to show that maybe you're not Georgia,
but you're still in that top tier, top second echelon.
And another question will be if Clemson is a playoff team,
and you can help decide that.
So don't forget to vote for which team you think
will be the Dr. Pepper one final team by using hashtag one final team.
All right, coming up.
We have got to talk about the Bulldog scares.
The Bulldogs got the win versus Florida,
but there are concerns building that these dogs may be more bark than bite.
We break down our concerns for Georgia.
Plus, the votes are in and the CFP rankings are out and scheduled to be released tonight at 7 p.m.
Our guys will tell us what teams they're most interested to see.

Florida Gators gave the number two Georgia Bulldogs everything they could handle and Georgia almost couldn't handle it.
Carson Beck threw three interceptions before the team even scored their first touchdown while the gators were led by Aidan Warner who stepped in after DJ Lagway went down with an injury, tied the game at 20 midway through the fourth quarter before the Bulldogs pulled away.
Now we nearly witnessed yet another upset in the SEC. Now from a quarterback.
perspective, I want to throw some numbers out there, guys. Carson Beck has now thrown 11
interceptions in eight games this season after throwing 11 and 14 games last season. So, Des,
what is your concern level for Carson Beck? I tell you what? Carson is putting me to sleep with
all these interceptions he's been throwing, man. It's just unbelievable to see some of the I and T's because
they're like head scratchers. It's like, okay, what was he actually looking at when he threw that ball
directly to the guy in the opposite jersey.
We're not talking about those tipped ones.
We're talking about ball going and you see two or three
defensive backs around one Georgia receiver.
I think that this year there's pressure on him
to make the receivers better because a year ago,
he had Brock Bowers, who was just an All-American tight end.
He had McConkey, Ladd McConkey,
who was a fantastic receiver.
Those guys were like safety blankets for him.
They made him look.
look great. Now, DeRose reversed this season. A lot of younger receivers, he needs to make those
guys look better. And it doesn't seem like he's able to do that. I don't know if he's pressing
or just regressing. But I tell you, Sam, man, I watched the, you know, the game live in a person
and Tuscaloosa against Alabama. And it was like he was seeing ghosts. And it's like he's seeing
that weekend and week out, same story at Texas when they played in Austin, even though they
won the game. He didn't have a great game. And then obviously they beat Florida. But again,
he threw three I and T's Sam. Yeah, to your point, Dad, there are a couple of the throws you
wonder. It's almost like one of those, oh, crap throws. You start to throw it. He's like, oh, no,
why did I throw it to the other team? There's the one interception I get it. It's tip. But some of the
other ones, it's three guys on the defense could have intercepted it. And so for me, the concerns
are this. Number one, it's not the protection or the decision making per se, but it's almost
is it, Carson Beck needs an outlet, right?
Ladd-McConkey is not on the Bulldogs anymore.
There's an 84, it's not McCawkey.
There's a 19 on the Bulldogs.
He plays defense.
Brock Bowers isn't there anymore either.
And so that's a piece of it.
But another piece is there'll be certain plays where no one's actually open.
And so Carson has to understand, okay, throw it away or take the sack at times.
He did it in the second half last week.
But early on, he was looking for an outlet like you had one of the, you know, at the, at the airport,
and you were phones about to die.
You got no outlet.
Then it was just boom.
took a sack. And so for me, I think the issue still persists because it's back to back to back weeks
of not consistent quarterback plays. And I think a big issue too is it took three quarters for them
to get a touchdown against Florida. So Georgia needs to figure things out pretty quickly as they
have Ole Miss this week, which is not going to be an easy opponent. But speaking of Ole Miss,
it's time to take a look at our Capital One rewarding performance. Jackson Dart had a monster game
against Arkansas this week, 515 passing yards, which is the most in a game.
in school history.
He also had his 13th career game with 300 past yards, also the most in program history,
and he becomes the first player in SEC history with 500 past yards, six past touchdowns,
and no interceptions in a game.
Keeping things in the SEC, what an SEC ABC college football lineup we have for you.
Dart and his Ole Miss Squad will host number two Georgia at 3.30.
The night is capped off in Death Valley with number 14 LSU hosting number 11 Alabama,
But it all starts at noon with Texas and Florida from Austin.
All right, we're going to bring in Pete Thamel with some top stories starting out on the West Coast.
What do you got for us, Pete?
Yeah, Victoria, we're going to start at USC where there's a changing of guard at quarterback.
Not sources will be in Apollo, Yugetti, this morning that Lincoln Riley has benched Miller Moss,
and they're going to go with sophomore transfer, Jaden Maiava.
Myava had a breakout freshman season at UNLB last year.
17 touchdown passes more than 3,000 yards.
Look, USC's in a slump.
They're in 15th place in the 18 team Big 10.
They're 2 and 5 in league play, and they hope Maiava can give them a spark.
As for USC's next opponent, Nebraska, their offense is sluggish as well.
They're bringing in a new staff member, as sources told me this morning, that Dana Holgerson has been added as a consultant.
I'll remember Holgerson from his head coaching stints at both West Virginia and Houston.
He's a noted quarterback tutor along the way, and he can help Dylan Ryola break out of his slum.
And finally, a move with huge playoff implications.
Oregon got some good news this week that star receiver Tess Johnson,
the Ducks leading receiver, will be back this season.
He injured his shoulder in the first half of that game at Michigan.
He was on the sideline in a sling.
I was told he does not need surgery, and Dan Lannig said to expect him back at some point this season.
We always love good news. Thank you, Pete. We always appreciate you.
Coming up, the committee has cast their votes for the CFP rankings that are released tonight.

My LSU with major playoff implications on the line.
Catch the game before the break.
Before to break it all down 9 a.m. on Saturday on the end.
The end of the playoff here is a look.
Texas to reveal the top 25 teams and the first 12-team playoff bracket.
And speaking of that, here is the new 12-team playoff format.
The five highest-ranked conference champions are 8.
The four highest ranked will be seated one through four and receive first round buys.
The eight team seated five through twelve will play in the first round with the higher ranked team hosting.
From there the playoff will play out as dictated by the bracket until a national champion's crowned January 20th on ESPN.
Now Heather, what are two questions you have for the committee tonight?
Well, Victoria, I think one starts at the top.
Did Ohio State do enough to be their highest ranked one lost team?
team ahead of Georgia. Now the head-to-head loss Oregon will obviously keep them behind
them but are they number two and then the second question I have is where is two
loss Alabama and this is probably the more intriguing of the questions because
they could be ahead of Boise State. Where is SMU in this conversation? Their only
loss is to a BYU team that could be top five in the rankings tonight. So I
think when you put those things together those are probably two
the most interesting questions.
But I just want people to know that if BYU is ranked outside of the committee's top 12
on Selection Day, they could bump out that 12th team to get a spot.
So I'm not sure if people, the average college football fan understands that.
So that's important to watch where Boise State is in Alabama in relation to that.
Okay, well, guys, we'll bring you into which team are you keeping an eye on to see where they
ranked tonight?
I'm going to start with you, Sam.
The first thing I'm keeping an eye on is where is Army ranked.
And part of the reason why I'm thinking about where Army is ranked is that in a few weeks,
they're going to play Notre Dame.
And if they win that game, all of a sudden, you start thinking that not only a highly ranked Army team,
but a team that could potentially win the AAC.
And so with the Army, potentially winning the AAC, I know I'm getting ahead of myself.
And also Boise, I'm looking at two potential conference champions.
I want to see where they're ranked.
So that's why I'm focused on Army and where they rank tonight.
Yeah, it's interesting, Sam, you mentioned Notre Dame because I want to see where Notre Dame is ranked.
Obviously, earlier in the season had a fantastic win on the road, college station against the Aggies,
but they had followed that up with a horrendous loss at home in South Bend against Northern Illinois.
So always curious to see where is the fighting Irish going to land?
I mean, I think it's just going to get very interesting.
You think so, Heather?
Well, it's going to be great because we're talking about a bunch of good news.
teams at the end of the pack.
A lot of good teams.
All right, for Sam Dez, Heather, Pete, I'm Victoria.
Don't forget to check out the rankings tonight at 7 on ESPN.
