Do you want to make a career change but you don't know how?
And you feel like you need to be forever stuck in your current job?
If this is how you're feeling right now, then you are in the right episode.
Because in this episode, I'm going to walk through with you the exact steps on how to make a career change so that you can become successful to pursue the next
phase of your career so let's dive in the first thing that you need to do if
you want to change careers is be clear on your why I noticed that for a lot of
people they tell me that you know me being I want to change careers I want to
transition I don't like what I'm to change careers I want to transition I
don't like what I'm doing right now I want to do something different okay but are you 100% clear on
your why because if you are not fully committed you will definitely struggle when you're in the
process of updating your resume interviews and actually landing the job offer to make the
transition to another industry or to another company. So
are you even clear on why you're looking for another job or why you want to make this career
change? Getting clear on your why at the beginning helps a lot because this is a question that will
definitely get asked during the interview process. So what you want to do here is to
prepare as early as possible so that you have that conviction and
you have the commitment to say yes this is actually what I want for the next phase of my career and
I'm ready to 100% commit to the learning to the upskilling and everything else that is required
for me to be successful when I finally make that career transition. On to the second thing that you need to do once you know your big why
is to identify specifically what kind of career transition are you trying to make. Are you trying
to move into a new industry, an emerging industry or maybe just a different industry or career change
means you want to go to a different company maybe from a startup to an SME to a regional company to a global MNC, or you're okay just to change functions.
So for example, you want to move from accounting into operations or you want to move from sales into marketing.
What exactly does transition look like for you?
And really defining it, is it at the industry level, level the company level the department and functional level
or just the daily job task that you do not enjoy so you need to be very clear and not leave it as
a vague ah i need a change but like what change right and this is really the vagueness that creates
a lot of confusion for job seekers to not be able to make that transition or rather not be able to give that 100% even if they say that
they want to make that career move. Alright, now that you've gotten clear on the why you want to
make the move and what exactly you want to do, the next thing is to then list down all the transferable
skills that you have gathered from your first job to the next job and the latest job throughout your
career history what have you done what are your achievements and specifically what are the
transferable skills that will be relevant to the next job right so you need to remember that you're
applying for the next job and therefore what you want to do is to really pull out all the career
experiences that you have and then okay now what is relevant for the next job and that is the transferable
skills that you want to really emphasize on and really sell yourself to help the move or the
transition or the change to a different industry company department and so forth a lot easier
because you are not starting from zero and that's really what we want to try to avoid so don't see
yourself as like starting from fresh.
You are not. You are somebody with experience. You just need to learn how to package that experience
a little bit better. Package all the skills in order for it to be relevant to the next job that
you want to transition to when you're making that career change. And after you have done all the
first three, the next step is you need to craft
a very clear career story. Now, why is the career story important? It's because if you're just saying
that you want to make a transition, you want to make a move without a clear reason on why you want
to make the move, what exactly do you want to do and what you can offer, nobody is going to take
you seriously and nobody can actually see the value if you're
not conveying it yourself so the next thing that you need to do is then you want to craft out a
career story to help people better understand how this transition makes sense along your corporate
career journey so now this is the actual pitch that you are going to put into your resume you're
going to put on your linkedin profile you are also going to share during interviews or doing networking process as well so this career story it's very very very
important that you get it right because it's going to deliver that one message to the hiring managers
to the recruiters to hr and even network you know you know when you're doing networking so that
everybody actually understands like your career path and
in this way they may be able to better help you to move towards your goals whether it's
in job offers or job opportunities or maybe even job referrals as well so that's kind of like how
everything ties in together and now if you have done everything that I said in this episode so far, you are ready to deep dive into the job search process.
So this is a process that I talk about a lot, the six step career planning, which is career clarity, resume update, LinkedIn profile update, targeted job search and then boosting your interview skills. So you're ready to deep dive into that. And then the next step would be really positioning your value in your resume, updating your LinkedIn profile, going through the various methods for
effective job search, as well as positioning yourself well and practicing your interview
skills. So this six-step process for job search as well as career planning is something that I
go into a lot more detail in my free training at www.growyourcorporatecareer.com. So I'm not going to go through in detail in this episode but
just know that you may need to do a little bit of foundational work and the groundwork that I
just shared in the earlier part of this episode before you can go all the way in the job search
process to enable success for you to make the transition and make the career change
and my final piece of advice to you if you think that this current job is the dead end you're wrong
if you think that getting stuck in this current team is the dead end you are also wrong if you
think that you can't do anything about your current situation you are definitely wrong
what you need to do is to make sure that you
follow the right steps for career planning, for career change and for career transition that I've
shared throughout this entire episode and actually implemented really focusing on your why and
positioning your value. Those two things, if you get it right, you will be able to make your career change
regardless of whichever industry that you want, regardless of whichever company, just like I have
personally done for my career as well. So with that, I wish you all the best and I'll see you in the next episode.
