If you're ambitious, hardworking and highly skilled at what you do
but can't seem to get new career opportunities,
you might have a value positioning problem.
When I started my first full-time job,
I thought that working hard was everything.
I thought that as long as I'm hardworking,
I put in the effort, time and energy,
my career would be smooth sailing. But turns out I was wrong. In as I'm hardworking, I put in the effort, time and energy, my career would be smooth sailing.
But turns out I was wrong.
In the past couple of episodes, we talked about the importance of having career clarity, work confidence and work competence.
If you already have all of that and you're still not getting headhunted, you're not getting recognized at work and you're not getting opportunities, then we are going to have a problem here.
The problem can be defined in one word and that word is value positioning.
What is value positioning?
Because whenever I hear people talk about value positioning, you know, to add value,
add value, it's like, okay, but what is add value?
Let me share my perspective with you today.
I want you to think about a present box that came in a nice wrapper and came with a nice
bow tie on top.
Once you receive this gift box, right, you pull out the ribbon, remove the wrapper, and then you
see what's inside the box, right? So inside the box, it could be an amazing gift, it could be
a lousy gift. Using that exact analogy, your skill set, your confidence, your competence,
the skills, the expertise, the value that you can bring, the contribution, everything that is
technical, transferable skills, those are the things inside the box right inside
the present box that no one will see until they have unwrapped the wrapper so the problem then is
it's not so much the skill set it's the packaging of your skill set if we were to flip the word
value positioning into packaging i think it actually makes it a lot easier to understand
as to how are you packaging yourself how are you being presented as a valuable professional? How are people perceiving
the value and contribution that you can bring as a valuable professional? So therefore, how do you
feel about your packaging? So do you feel that your packaging fully reflects what you can do?
And by packaging, I mean what's in your resume, what's in your LinkedIn
profile, how are you communicating about yourself at work, networking events, workplace, to your boss,
to your big boss, and to everyone else. That is the positioning, that is the packaging. So back to the
analogy of the present box, I want you to truly ask yourself whether it's the issue with what is in
the box, right? That's the skills, that's the confidence, and that's all the things that we have talked about in the previous episodes.
Or is the challenge more around the packaging of the box, right?
So this is the bow tie, this is the gift card, this is the wrapper.
That these are things that could easily be resolved by some really, really quick tweaks.
If you feel that the wrapper is the problem,
or the overall packaging and positioning is the problem,
then download my free 5-day career growth guide at www.mayping.com
and you can also find the link in the description below
where I'll walk you through the exact formula that I have used
and I've taught many of my students who are 9-5 professionals like you.
Make sure that you're packaging yourself in the best way possible
that can truly reflect your value, contributions,
and what you can bring to the table. Drop a comment once you're done with it and tell me what is your value positioning statement. Till then, I'll see you in the next episode of this
series. See you. All the best.
