Starting point is 00:00:00 Welcome to the Corporate Survivor Podcast, where we talk about how to grow your career confidence, build your skills and value, increase your salary, and the many lessons we learn in the corporate world. For more career support, click on over to www.mayping.com. This is Mayping, your corporate leader turned career coach. I hope you enjoy, like and subscribe. In today's podcast, I want to talk about my signature Ping method that I use for coaching young executives and entrepreneurs. It is definitely the game-changing approach you need to know to become a high-performing young leader.
Starting point is 00:00:47 So the PING method, P-H-I-N-G. Today, we're only going to talk about P, which is personality. So over five days, I will be kind of going into each part of the P-H-I-N-G, personality, hacker, ideas, navigate and go-getter. So you can get a bit more insights as to this coaching model that I use for clients that work with me. So back to today, where we'll be focusing a lot more about personality. So why do I need to bother about personality if really what I'm looking for is career coaching, leadership coaching and business coaching? That's a very good question
Starting point is 00:01:37 but I would say this. If you don't know who you are in terms of like your strengths, your weaknesses, your default behaviors, if you don't have that kind of self-awareness, it is really going to be very difficult for you to move forward. Because how do you know if something is suitable for you? How do you know if you're actually going to naturally excel at it or it's just going to be really painful for you to move forward and pretty much dumping water into like a black hole, right? Now, I've worked with like a lot of people when I was working with people ages between 25 to 45. In addition to that, I also mentor and coach Generation Z. So these are pretty much young kids below the age of 25.
Starting point is 00:02:36 And there is commonality that I see. The people who kind of really move up the ranks and do big things, they have very clear understanding of their personality they're very clear on their strengths what are they naturally good at and more importantly the their default behaviors because sometimes you know you we feel like things are happening to us but it's just our natural reaction of responding in a certain way, even though, you know, we don't realize it as much because you've done this all your life, right? So you don't see it. And when I'm with my clients, what I'm actually really good at is mirroring and having that very, very precise sense of what is going on because you know what i i really enjoy
Starting point is 00:03:28 observing people so i'm very good at like dissecting people and learning about them just by what they say how they behave how they express certain things so i think there's definitely a massive value in that so i only have pretty much four four questions for you if you really want to understand about your personality at least at the at an immediate level so question number one and if in fact you know what if you have a piece of paper or notepad now is the time to take it out so that you can make notes or maybe put in a quick rating based on what I'm going to share with you so that there's actually something that you can take away. So yeah, question number one, do you get energized or exhausted by social interactions and external stimulation, right? So are you energized or are
Starting point is 00:04:29 you exhausted? If you're energized, it pretty much means that you're an extrovert, at a high level at least. If you are constantly exhausted, you feel it's quite tiring, then you are an introvert. Number two, question number two, do you tend to focus on identifying patterns and future possibilities? Or you are more focused on what is happening right now or the stuff that has already happened, right? So on one side, you are very interested in patterns and future possibilities and those kind of stuff or on this other side you are more focused on what is currently happening like the present moment or the things that have already happened in terms of the past so if the first if you're the first one it likely likely means that you're intuitive, where you like to kind of project into the future. And if you're on the latter one, that means that you're more of a sensor.
Starting point is 00:05:32 So you're focused on kind of what is happening right here, right now. All right, so question number three. Do you prefer to think logically? Or do you feel empathy when it comes to dealing with people and situations so are you kind of a logical um driven person with a lot of justifications and reasoning and those kind of things or are you more of like a trying to understand people's emotions how do they feel a more kind of a collaborative approach so if you're the first one that means you're your thinker if you're the second one then it means that you're a feeler and it also affects
Starting point is 00:06:13 like how you it also interacts with like some of the other personality bits that we talked about a little bit earlier and the fourth bit do you lean towards a more structured organization sort of approach? Or are you a go with the flow, kind of relaxed, flexible method when it comes to work? Right. So are you structured or are you flexible? So just by answering these four questions, it gives you a bit of an insight into your personality. And how that would impact in terms of making certain things a success or a pain when you're trying to fix a problem or when you're trying to approach people, you're trying to make decisions and whatnot. So if you've missed out on my earlier Introverts Unite, as well as my Extroverts Connect podcast series, you can feel free to check those out because essentially
Starting point is 00:07:13 identifying yourself as an introvert or an extrovert or along the spectrum will greatly impact your understanding of your own communication style, which can truly, truly help when you're trying to communicate and build relationships with people. So definitely, you know, check out those episodes and see what you can really get out of it. And in there, I also share definitely quite a few tips as well. So just the the p part the personality definitely is the first thing you need to identify i mean there are a lot of personality tests out there like the one i like a lot is 16personalities.com and there are also other ones like the this personality strength father quite a few things but i would say what i would say is this it is really just a guide because
Starting point is 00:08:06 we are all unique individuals but if you feel like you want an indicator and you just pretty much sat down and say okay i don't really know what's my personality you know different people have been saying different things then why not check one of these personality assessments out but when you get the results, just really don't take it as, you know, point blank, what they say must be true because nobody can tell you what's true.
Starting point is 00:08:34 But it's only you, right? Because, you know, it's you. And whatever that you see on the, as the, you know, on the personality results doesn't mean that you can't develop skills you can't practice to overcome your strengths so i mean i like to say that you know we all can turn our weaknesses
Starting point is 00:08:52 into wins like for myself you know i'm not a very detailed kind of person but the many years spent in the auditing industry where i was doing quite a number of detailed work has really drilled it into me so right now today I can be quite detailed and and that has helped me truly as well because when I work with my coaching clients you know I'm very very um observant and I listen very closely to what they say you know word by word and I get a lot more insights because i have learned to um adapt to this attention of detailed style which is um which doesn't come very naturally to me so so what i'm saying is this right work on your self-awareness that is the key to success in life career and and business yeah so my p-h-i-n-g and if you actually want the um the written form of pretty much the four questions that i asked today you can hop on over to my website www.gotaping.com where you will be able to get your free ping method delivered to your inbox just kind of
Starting point is 00:10:10 put in your name and address and you will be able to get that guide it's a bit of a cheat sheet that you can use as and when you need to refer to something and it is super super duper helpful i guarantee that and a lot of the clients that i work with with this method they've gotten like massive results so you know what why not just get the cheat sheet get my ping method the ping method guide the ping guide um on my website so i'll i'll see you in the other episodes where I kind of go through the other PHRNG. See ya!
