Hello everyone and welcome back to another episode of my Got a Ping podcast, a podcast that you should listen to if you want to grow your corporate career. So we are still now in our 30-day client success story series
Starting point is 00:00:42 where I'll be sharing a few real clients that I work with either in a one-on-one basis or clients who have attended my training workshops in terms of how they have managed to really improve their work performances, grow their careers as well as land multiple job interviews as well as job offers that they are really looking for. So I hope that these stories will inspire you and empower you to really take charge of your career because if my clients can really transform and advance their careers, I am sure that you can also do the same. All right, so today's story that I want to share with you is a client that worked with me in the earlier part of this year. So what was very interesting is that
Starting point is 00:01:25 when this client came to me he was very honest and he told me that you know me ping i came across your profile some time ago and personally for me i have had a lot of challenges over the years because i don't know what job is suitable for me. I have gone to multiple career coaches, consultants. I have spoke to a lot of people on LinkedIn. I have watched YouTube. I have read articles. I have gone for personality tests. Basically, I have done all those things, but I still don't know what is wrong with me but i know that something is wrong with me because i'm not happy at my job so he was very honest and he said like okay i'm you know i'm a little bit frustrated but i have seen a lot of like positive feedback and reviews on the stuff
Starting point is 00:02:20 that you have done i've been following your content and i really want to give you a try so i want to see how you can help me because i've tried so many options and you know those have never worked out for me so you know mayping tell me your solution what can you do for me so i i told him that okay fine like shell maybe we can just start with just a one-time consultation first because i really need to understand what kind of challenges he is facing and some examples of the issues that he feels are unresolved even after speaking to so many people doing so much research and spending so much time really trying to pinpoint the problem but still you know he felt he felt that he couldn't really get the solution so we started working, you know, agreed to work, like, you know, two to three sessions
Starting point is 00:03:07 just to see where we go from there. And in the first session, to be honest, he was very honest with me. He told me that, you know, what the other career coaches or consultants told him. And, okay, this is basically what he told me. I don't really know, but what he said was that every time he went to a career coach
Starting point is 00:03:25 or consultant they just gave him a checklist of what he needed to do for to apply for a job but he felt that he still didn't really understand why he is unhappy at the multiple jobs that he has already been in so i think he didn't he didn't feel like you know he was hurt he didn't feel like people were they were listening to him because he'd been like very upfront about the problems but he felt that they were not giving him the perspective that he's looking for so how i did the session was that i told him to give me multiple examples of what he means by he's unhappy and multiple multiple things so he shared with me a lot of his issues challenges what he was not happy about how he felt he was not appreciated
Starting point is 00:04:13 how he felt that you know his job doesn't have a meaning and that you know things are just not going well he doesn't know if you know people value his work and yada yada yada there'll be a lot of problems like clearly he has been thinking about it for a long time and understandably so because if you are a person who has been to multiple people to talk about your problems you have gone to like experts experts and you did a lot of research and still don't get the answer i can really understand where the frustration is coming from so that was really how he felt at the time. So after he told me all those things, right? And I think for those of you guys who have been following my content for a while, you guys would know that
Starting point is 00:04:53 the way I approach a lot of my client conversations, especially at the beginning of us working together, I always try to understand what is your personality because to me personality is really the foundation because that's the way you think that's the way you feel it's how you behave it's how you approach everything in your life be it your career personal life it's it's the same approach because you are that one person right whether you're at home you're at work you are that one person so um I really started with the personality bit. And eventually after he told me all those things, right, I just told him, actually, if I can be honest with you,
Starting point is 00:05:35 I think your biggest issue is not about the next job. It is not about finding a new job. It is not about this a new job it is not about this not about that but your fundamental issue is you are a person who takes things too personally and feelings play a very very big part on how you operate at work it affects a lot of your decision making it affects how you deal with people it affects how you see other people how you approach your work how everything else because it's just the way you are, that is your personality, like you take things personally, it's not intentional, it's just, it's just, he has been like this for a
Starting point is 00:06:14 really long time, but he never really realized it, so we talked about that a little bit, and I give him some tips and strategies on how he can really develop more self-awareness in terms of like how his feelings are really triggering certain things that he say and behave at work that is actually getting him the kind of like negative result and unhappiness that he's been facing for a number of years already so that was really what we focused on in the first session um and what was actually really interesting was um actually for all my one-on-one sessions at the end of the session i always ask my clients okay like can you tell me what is your biggest takeaway from this session like what is your biggest learning or rather biggest realization that you have from that you got from today's
Starting point is 00:07:00 session so what he told me was really very interesting and he said that oh me ping i think you really pointed out the elephant in the room and that was a it was a problem that i never realized i had and i also never realized the extent that is impacting me at work and the problem is that, you know, I take things personally and I feel a lot, right? I feel very deeply and that affected the way I carried myself at work. And now I can see why this is a real problem. And he said that I, in fact, I feel a little bit disappointed because I already, you know, spoken to so many people, but not a single person ever told me that these problems are all happening because of my personality they always try to give me some
Starting point is 00:07:50 checklist which really didn't work out so he he actually said um you know thank you so much for pointing this out for me I I really never realized this and I really need to go back and really have to think about how how this you know personality trait of mine has impacted my entire career and really how I want to advance from here because I don't want to change myself, but how can I still survive and thrive and do well in the corporate world and still feel appreciated? So that was really, to me, the biggest aha he had in the first session alone and to me also proves that it is so important to start
Starting point is 00:08:28 with personality i don't know who you guys are like talking to for advice but before you go for the strategies and tips just really really make sure that you understand the person that you are talking to and for me it was very clear that we had to start with the personality it didn't matter if i gave him any tools or strategies because i know that he's not going to do anything because we need to understand the root cause problem right the root cause that's causing all these things and see what we can do from there so i say that you know for for that particular client that was really the biggest win and after that we did another two sessions together where i actually gave him some practical tips on how he can leverage some of his strengths so you know
Starting point is 00:09:10 having a lot of feelings at work it's not necessarily a bad thing but not being able to identify the boundary and the line then it is a bad thing so i really had to go through with him on like how to actually utilize you know the feelings element and how to draw the line between being, you know, empathetic versus being objective, right? How to develop more objectivity in the way that he thinks rather than just being caught in the feels part and really how to identify dynamic, how to better plan his work as well because a person who is a feeler sometimes they find logical thinking a little bit more challenging it's not that they can't but it's just not the most natural thing for them so this is actually a very common thing when i work with a lot of my clients who are still who steer towards the feeling side of things versus my other clients who are very logical people.
Starting point is 00:10:06 So I do take slightly different approaches depending on my clients' personalities as well. So I think that's like really, really the biggest win, which is to him, to this particular client, is really about self-awareness because without that self-awareness, it would significantly impact his career negatively as the years go the years go by so at this point he has only worked about in five five and a half years so it's still not that bad yet still you know he could still remediate that but if he had allowed this to go on for next couple of years it probably would have created a lot more frustration in his career so um in terms of like you know understanding personalities and dynamics that is definitely
Starting point is 00:10:45 one of the main coaching approaches that i use when i work with my clients one-on-one and that is actually something that i also teach in my two weeks boost your confidence and soft skills at work where i go through in a lot more detail personality types how personality affects you at your job people dynamics as well as communication style as well as thinking style so that's something that i actually go into a lot more detail in my two-week training but the point i'm trying to make in this episode is self-awareness and understanding yourself the way your personality is the way that you think the way that you feel how your default behaviors are that is something so important because if you don't know that, it could potentially create blocks
Starting point is 00:11:25 and letting you get stuck without you realizing what is actually the root cause. So I hope that this episode, this client success story has inspired you to really think about really improving your self-awareness, gaining more self-awareness of your own personality type, how that could actually impact your career, how it impacts your behaviors at work
Starting point is 00:11:49 and potentially how it impacts your personal life as well. So as usual, this 30-day client success story series is to hopefully inspire you
Starting point is 00:11:58 and empower you to really take charge of your career. So with that, I will see you guys in the next episode. Until then, I hope that you stay inspired. Cheers, take care. Bye. take charge of your career so with that i will see you guys in the next episode until then i hope that you stay inspired cheers take care bye
