Hello and welcome back to another episode of my Got a Ping podcast. And right now we are in our 30-day client success story series, where in this week, I'll be sharing multiple stories on clients who have worked with me
Starting point is 00:00:41 to nail job offers at big companies their ideal companies with better job opportunities and of course a better compensation and salary package which which is the dream of a lot of job seekers and one of the main reasons why people choose to apply for a new job all right so if you're one of those who wonder if you know if it's the right time to apply for a job right now if it's the right time to apply for a job right now if it's the right time to think about you know changing jobs during the pandemic and all these other challenges that you might have on your mind then this episode is definitely right for you this series is definitely right for you to inspire you as well as empower you with
Starting point is 00:01:19 my clients successes and see how you can actually utilize the similar strategies for yourself to achieve the similar level of success that my clients have achieved in their careers and their job search process. So today I actually want to share with you a client story who has worked with me a little bit earlier last year when the pandemic just hit right in the first half of 2020 so just a little bit of context about this client um this client of mine actually has been in the travel services industry for more than 20 years so basically for her entire career of like 20 years it has only been in travel customer service and hospitality so um as we know, these industries have been very badly hit by the pandemic, and she was also extremely worried at that time.
Starting point is 00:02:13 And obviously, you know, her confidence was also affected because if the only thing that she's been doing for the past 20 years, and that's where her skills and expertise lie, which is within the travel industry, then her biggest concern was like, okay, M okay me being what can i actually do after this because you know my skills are so unique and it doesn't very it doesn't look like it's transferable to me so what are the options that are actually available for me so this client like i said was um you know i worked with in the earlier part of um I guess, my coaching, my career coaching career.
Starting point is 00:02:48 And we actually worked together in two ways. So the first one was she attended my LinkedIn training, which was focused on the step by step on building a really strong LinkedIn profile and some methods around searching for a job effectively on LinkedIn. So she attended that training first and later on she actually booked a one-on-one consultation session with me on how she can better position herself online and some of the things that she should be thinking about in terms of like you know then her next career options, as well as really pulling out her skills to position herself well. So in that LinkedIn session, nowadays I don't really do it this way anymore, but we actually covered two key areas. First, we actually look at her experiences in detail to really try to pull out her transferable skills and what actually made her a success in her previous job, even though it was in the travel industry. And what are some of the transferable skills that could move to another industry as well?
Starting point is 00:03:59 So we also talked a little bit about some of the jobs that she feel comfortable with and some of her i guess target functions or industry but her biggest problem was that she felt that she was not good enough and she was consistently burdened by the fact that she has only been in travel only been in travel and that was something she emphasized like so many times right so that i think was the biggest challenge for her but aside from that obviously there are the other part which is around making sure that her linkedin is properly optimized and she's actually focused on the right things being online because having an online presence is not good enough and it is not effective if you don't know what you're doing or you lose focus on what is important for you as a corporate
Starting point is 00:04:40 professional because right now there's just a lot of noise on linkedin and if you're not careful you might get caught in the whole linkedin influencer thing and you know all these advice that are given to you by like sales people marketing people and basically people who have like never had a career in corporate so they don't actually know how to use linkedin for to advance their corporate career but they're just using linkedin for like marketing purposes so just make sure that you are not caught in that whole um drama or rather the noise that to be honest doesn't actually work for you so a lot of things that i share are things that i personally use to advance in my corporate career and of course if you want to know more about my corporate career you can feel free to check out my linkedin profile at making live career coach on linkedin but back to this client.
Starting point is 00:05:25 So we went a lot around how what are the actual options available and really not get stuck by the fact that, yeah, yes, you have been in one industry for a long time. That's true. There's nothing you can change about that. But what are some of the skills that you manage to pick up? Right. What's transferable? What do you actually want to do? These are very, very open options that, yes, just because you've been in one industry, the industry doesn't work out right now,
Starting point is 00:05:48 doesn't mean that you can't do something else, right? So we work around that a lot. And the good thing about her is that she's actually a very positive person and a person who is very, very focused on growth. So sometimes, you know, when you talk to older professionals, some of them, I'm not saying all of them but some of them do have a bit of a mindset block where they will always say that hey you know i'm really you know i've really worked for more than 20 years 30 years i don't think anybody wants to hire me anymore yada yada but the good thing about this client is that she didn't have any of those mindset blocks. She's a person who is actually really open to growth
Starting point is 00:06:25 and really open to investing in her future because she does see herself making an impact, maybe in a different industry, different department, but her main focus is still making an impact. So that was what we were able to really pull out, some of her strong skill set that she managed to gain during her days in travel. And one of it was the fact that she could speak like five, six languages. So that is something
Starting point is 00:06:50 that probably she has and a lot of other people don't have. So that was just an example of a skill set and unique point that I managed to pull out from my experiences. And that was something that we also emphasize, not just in her resume but also on her linkedin profile because to me that is a really unique point that she should be selling because most people probably don't actually have that right so eventually eventually i'm so happy to announce that she actually got a position um in the quality assurance department at another company so it's actually a completely different industry is one thing, but a completely different department as well.
Starting point is 00:07:28 So she's very excited about it. But the good thing about it is that a lot of the skills that she has gained, right, in terms of like a lot of the travel paperwork, the documentation, the checks, basically all the stuff that she did is now something that she could 100% do in her new role as a quality manager. Right. So like I said, might be in a different industry, might be in a different department, but the nature of the work, the nature of the work, the skill set required to succeed at that job,
Starting point is 00:07:54 of a similar nature, even though it's in a different industry, different company, right? But the nature is similar, so that means that the skills are also similar, all right? So that was how she managed to transition. And she was extremely thankful. She sent me multiple messages updating me about her job search process. And eventually when she finally transitioned, it was, I think, something that she felt the sense of relief, right, of actually able to move out from a struggling industry,
Starting point is 00:08:23 for lack of a better word. So really happy about that and i'm also really happy that you know she as a person is a person that doesn't give up she's always focused on growth and she is always willing to invest to improve her career even though she has already worked for 20 years and i think that's a really good quality to have like if you're listening to this right maybe you're a fresh graduate you've only worked like i don't know one year three years five years ten years or whatever i hope you're listening to this, right, maybe you're a fresh graduate. You've only worked like, I don't know, one year, three years, five years, 10 years or whatever. I hope you're also inspired by this story of my client who basically always looking forward to what's next in her career rather than being limited by her age, being limited by being in a struggling industry and being limited by her skills and her capability.
Starting point is 00:09:03 So that is definitely not the case in my client this client super duper proud of her and i hope that her story has really inspired you and also the other thing i also wanted to share is that you know what if you have the right strategy and sometimes right you know for this client in particular i didn't actually work with her on the interview and stuff but it's just the foundation program There needs to be a foundation program because if you get the foundation off then you will not see any results at all So that's why it's so important that I talk to her number one career options and clarity What does she actually want to do? What are some of the skills that she has which we can pull out number two?
Starting point is 00:09:41 We talked about in detail her experiences, right? What are some of her successes? What are some of the things that she did to really, again, pull out the nature of her job and some of the transferable skills that we can use to sell her and position her? Like I said, that example of the fact that she's multilingual, that is something that could be a competitive advantage for her. Then number three, as usual, LinkedIn profile. LinkedIn profile so so so important because she has actually been on LinkedIn for a long time before she came to me and she also didn't actually get any opportunities but the moment she applied my LinkedIn profile optimization which is very very
Starting point is 00:10:18 specific to corporate professionals and the networking strategies which is taught in step four which is part of the job search and networking strategy, she started seeing a lot of results. She started seeing people reaching out to her. And when she applied those kind of networking job search strategies, she's actually getting responses from people, which are actually all really positive things, right? So like I said, the foundation of job search is the same thing. One, two, three, four. Even before you get to the interview, you need to master career clarity direction resume linkedin profile job search networking strategy these four things the four foundational points that is also taught in my job seeker to winner program either it's a
Starting point is 00:10:56 two-week training or even in my one-on-one program that is actually a foundation that you need to fix first before you go out there applying and practicing your interview skills because if you don't fix the foundation the later part will not come okay so i hope that this story of this client actually inspires you and if you happen to be listening to my podcast as somebody who is a little bit more experienced that has many years of um you know working experience under your belt i hope this story also inspires you that by having the right growth mindset right the right focus on looking forward and actually pulling out your strong skills point, you are a valuable professional ready to give more to your next company. So with that, I hope
Starting point is 00:11:37 this episode and this series actually inspires you and empowers you to really take the right steps to connect yourself to more career as well as job opportunities so if you enjoyed this series make sure to check out the rest of the episodes again as usual if you also enjoyed this series and this podcast in general do remember to like and subscribe share it with a friend tag me maybe on linkedin if you want to share your story as well so with that i'll see you in the next episode
