All right.
Good morning.
We are live.
My name is Andrew.
And I'm Sean.
And we are the East fam.
And you're listening to A Couple Things.
Yes.
Podcasts all about couples.
and things they go through.
That's right.
Today's going to be a fun episode.
It's a live stream.
We used to do these all the time.
And Sean, well, she got stressed out by him.
These never, ever, ever go smoothly, guys.
For example, Andrew accidentally went live 10 minutes ago.
And he's like, do you just want to jump into it?
I'm like, no.
We're not prepared.
Here's the thing.
There's a bunch of software.
They're always updating.
There's internet problems.
but we're figuring it out.
And what you don't see is that like a marital argument basically starts
because Andrew's over here in the self-deprecating mode.
He's like, brick.
Ugh.
Oh, good.
I'm like, oh, my gosh.
I need you to calm down because this is like supposed to be an easy thing.
It just pressed live, you know?
So with us we have Paige Swanson, Stacey, Abarka, Katie Osborne, Julie McGrady, Logan Bateman.
Gosh, good morning, everybody.
Samantha Payne look at all these wonderful people here with us I am so excited I actually love
live streams because there is so much going on what you don't see behind our computers we have
our content for today the things that we want to talk about which is the topic of work life
relationship balance which we still have yet to figure out but we're learning we also have
the live stream up we're looking at all of your comments and questions coming in so
please if you have any live questions for us today we're happy to like call your
name out and answer your question if you want to keep it anonymous please let us know also today is
huge so I'm going to give you the rundown of how this episode is going to work in a minute we are
going to announce the three five hundred dollar cash winners from Thanksgiving to enter that giveaway
you had to subscribe to our podcast and tell us something you were thankful for while nominating
someone for this cash prize then about halfway through
We are going to announce the $1,000 cash winners
from the most recent giveaway.
There are three of them.
And at the end of this show,
we will announce something we're very, very excited about
when we've never needed, or we've never done before,
which is we are giving $10,000 cash to one winner.
The only caveat out there is we have sent all of our winners,
Zoom links.
So at any point in time, if someone jumps on a Zoom,
link they might join us here live on this stream that's right so there's going to be seven total
winners today and having doing these giveaways Sean and I have been doing these giveaways in
December for five six years yeah they've looked different each and every year there was a point
where Sean was packing boxes hundreds of boxes with like a dozen different trinkets in it and shipping
them out and then we had pallets in our garage at one point as companies came and made the
giveaways bigger but this year we're kind of keeping it simple we thought that it would be fun to
just give away cash as a thank you and it's not lost on us how fortunate we are to be a part of this
community and I just want to say thank you from Sean and I it's amazing like when we started making
YouTube videos in 2015 we didn't know what we were getting into and we were doing slime videos we
were doing vlogs we were doing a bunch of random stuff and ultimately we have now been able to
to make content that i feel like resonates with so many of you that we feel like is important and
that's that's content that celebrates and encourages family and our community is all about being
positive and enforcing positivity it's all about um uplifting people it's all about just keeping
it uh entertaining and educating where possible which is why we
We love this podcast because we're able to talk to true experts.
So to see our show above CNN and NBC and ABC and Joe Rogan and all these people is really just a testament to you all for putting us in this position and reinforcing that mission that like family can be such an aspirational thing.
It's more important than the daily news and it's it's more important than the next entrepreneurship stick that's going on.
And so we're glad that you feel the same way.
And we're also really, really thankful that you have participated on this journey with us.
So thank you.
I want to answer a couple of questions here before you jump into this.
A couple of clarifications that I'm getting from Lexi.

don't worry we will find you we will find you we will give you money so work life
balance we wanted to cover why a healthy work life is necessary for a healthy life
and relationships and how it can easily fall how so easily we can fall into the
do more culture that I feel like our society
has created and it's really just about making small changes to create healthier balances
Sean wrote a book years ago called the winning balance we have experienced this from the
negative standpoint what a bad work life balance feels like and so gonna try to share our experiences
through that process today I also want to say that I know everybody's work life balance looks
different and there are a lot of like single parents or parents out there are just people in
general who are working multiple jobs at a time especially during this crazy phase of life
with a recession whatever your situation we're not necessarily going to talk about
how you shouldn't be working a lot and you shouldn't like you should make time
it's more about this mentality change of making sure your priorities are in
order and learning how to find tiny little boundaries throughout your life
and your situation to make sure that you are setting yourself up in your family
up for success that's right and we know there's a lot of you out there working
multiple jobs have crazy schedules young kids we just wanted to say that you're doing a great job
keep it up you have our support and respect so thank you for all that you do for the people in your
life but what have we experienced from our lack of work life balance burnout is the first thing that comes
to mind yes i feel like and i kind of entered the whole work world at different ages and so i
learned a lot early on and i learned it all the hard way because i started working for
professionally when I was 12 as a professional gymnast and then I kind of hit the more corporate level of
work when I was 16 and I learned firsthand what burnout was and that was just basically I was doing
everything for other people I was trying to chase a job title or an income or do things that other
people said like they would say this is the path you're supposed to go down or this is what I think
is the going to lead you to the most success or whatever it was and I was just working working working
working working working working trying to get in as many hours as I possibly could and do as many
opportunities as I possibly could and it just all felt like I was working against myself and burnout I think
is when you come home at the end of the day not only tired but defeated you don't feel like you've
filled your cup at all you feel like you've just emptied it and you're not getting any joy out of what
you do and I used to give lectures and speeches to college kids oh my gosh multiple times a month for
years and I would I would preach the same thing that I learned which is your job
And there's a lot of circumstances that are different, but your job definitely has to give you, you know, you have to be able to pay your bills.
But at the end of the day, there are jobs that will make you happy and there are jobs that won't.
And I think that joy is the most important.
You can get protein at home or a protein latte at Tim's.
No powders, no blenders, no shakers.
Starting at 17 grams per medium latte, Tim's new protein lattes,
protein without all the work at participating restaurants in Canada here's one thing uh
sean and i feel like have recently had a different perspective on this uh because of a book we've read
and i'm fortunate enough to be a part of an amazing mince group where we've read a couple books that kind of
touch on this idea of thinking about what's important in your life and then prioritizing those
things and have that reflected in your schedule so a couple books that come to mind on this subject are
the ruthless elimination of hurry and visioneering visioneering is a book by andy stanley that talks
about how we we all end up somewhere in life some of us get there on purpose and so it's like
thinking about hey what do i actually what do i actually want from my life and what do i want
for my family and having a a clear vision of that even though it's going to change and it will
evolve I think it's so important because it's so easy to Sean and I do this stumble through the
motions you just like are in survival mode right doing one thing after the next because it has to be
done but when you take a step back and you realize like hey this job is hard I don't enjoy it all
the time but there's purpose in it that's a good place to be right and then that that can give you
energy more so in the future and that's important we're going to do a whole episode on goals
Sean and I were actually just sitting down and thinking about a family motto, mission statement, and family core values, and dialing in that of like what is your DNA, what gets you excited, what is just an absolute drag, goes a long way. And then the ruthless elimination of hurry is a book pretty much about like, once you know what's important in your life and you have a vision of that, how do you eliminate hurry by eliminating the non-essential things? So that's a brief thought.
for my end I want to give one more thought too about the burnout because there are a lot of comments
coming through of people who are saying they feel exactly that they're like checking the boxes
as we talk and it can be a really scary feeling to feel burnout because you feel defeated and backed
into a corner because especially as parents which a lot of you are parents in the comments you have
this feeling and we have felt that before we've been there where it's like I can't quit my job
because I have to be able to take care of my babies and I have to be able to pay bills and pay
child care and all these things health insurance whatever and i think what and i have done in those
scenarios is we're like okay this is the phase of life we're in we are burnt out we don't enjoy what we're
doing we need to change it so instead of quitting our job and being like okay i'm going to quit and i'm
going to go find another job that i like which is pretty unrealistic when you have kids and you have a
lifestyle you have to um continue uh what we did is we continued doing those jobs with this idea
and this mindset of okay where i'm at right now isn't where i want to be but let's go find it like
in those few spare minutes after you put the kids down let's start looking for new jobs and
taking interviews and seeing what path i can go down that might bring me a little bit more joy
and even if that means sacrificing a few more dollars just because you're taking a not as high
paying job if that brings you more joy and happiness and satisfaction that's going to
that's worth more than a few dollars we realize like look there's limitations
to that right Sean mentioned like you have to pay the bills but but like
establishing your own limitations on your terms is it's actually pretty freeing
right you're not gonna live this bound boundary list life where you can do
anything you want that's just not how it works but establishing your own
boundaries can be an amazing process the comments coming in are amazing by
We have like Sarah Kay, white homing girl.
Did you have one you want to talk about?
Yeah, Sarah Kay has asked,
how does one not feel defeated when so many variables are negative and out of your control?
I think Andrew and I felt that massively during the pandemic where it was really hard for us every day to find something positive to feel hopeful.
and I think when you are within like in a situation where you feel that where there's so much negative
I think all you can do is try to find one positive a day to focus on whether it be health or family
or even the thought and I say this to each other a lot which is like it could always be worse
like it could always be worse and there's always like another scenario that we aren't thinking of
so we always have to act like or not act but like believe that we're blessed if that makes sense
yeah my dad establish this routine of every day when he wakes up he says this is the day the
lord has made let us rejoice and be glad in it and like some days we wake up and we just say it out
of routine but some days we wake up and we're like bummed out it's a bad day like two days
ago, I didn't want to do anything. It felt like, it felt like all the momentum was against
me and there was just a ton of friction, right? Of like, oh, hey, you can't do this. You can't do
that. That didn't work out. They said no. This got canceled. And I'm like, dang. But when you
have that perspective of like, I'm going to rejoice, that changes your lens that you're wearing
from, oh, dang, this is such a bummer to looking for the things that you could potentially be grateful
for and that's a big difference okay last one before we hear from our sponsors um jenna says
or no lindsay sorry i definitely feel burnout i want to support my family but also want to do what i
love having a hard time balancing the two this is easier said than done but again going back to that
process where i was saying understanding it's a phase and we're going to take a new path of what we
enjoy um the way that i always see it now with our kids is if when our kids if when our
kids grow up if they are stuck in this rut of feeling like they just have to do it to support their
family I think that's the wrong perspective you have to teach your children and show your children
by example that just going through the motions for a paycheck is not the important part of it
it's truly living life and enjoying life and even if that's a little bit more on the edge and
is scary I think that's a better lesson to teach your children then I just have to do it
man there's so many comments in here that one address we probably should just actually come up with
an episode there's people asking about or there's people talking about how they're in this weird
in between between careers how do you deal with burnout as an athlete sean and i have
experienced this in our professional athleticism careers like when you in sport and go to another
career that's a whole journey and a whole process but we'll pause there for a second
and one of the conjuring last rites
on September 5th
I come down here I'm in your house

The Conjuring
Last Rites, only on theater September 5th.
I want to thank our sponsor for today.
And that's better.
I know. I mean, this is the most perfect. If you guys are in this burnout phase, if you're
needing someone else to help you, better help is an awesome, awesome place to turn to.
And when you're sick and your kids are sick as well like us, it makes it so much more difficult
to be mentally healthy. I've learned that firsthand the past three weeks. You've been a great job.
Oh, my goodness. But not being able to hold your kids for several days. I was out for four days
while I was fighting off the flu. It was one of the hardest things I had to do, to be honest with you.
to help you guys three sick people in one house is like hard to stay sane but in moments like that we
lean on better help a lot it's just great to chat with a therapist at any point and talk to them about
how you're feeling or what you're going through career changes or what have you uh it helps a ton
um you can even like chat with them or text with them too which you actually needed because you couldn't
go more than two sentences without coughing um but if you guys don't know better help is customized online
therapy that offers video phone and even live chat sessions with your therapist so you don't have to see
anyone on camera if you don't want to the best part is it's much more affordable than in-person therapy
give it to try yourself if you have yet and see if online therapy can help lower your stress
couple things is sponsored by better help and our listeners you can get 10% off your first month at
betterhelp.com slash east fam that's b-t-t-t-t-e-r-h-lpcom slash east fam i this is a tangent to go off of sorry but
and her nice first session we ever did with better help was for marriage counseling and when we got
online with her therapist she was awesome she's like okay tell me what like what your argument is what you're
going over and we're like oh we're not in an argument we just want to like keep this maintenance up
to make sure we don't get an argument and she's like wow this is the first i ever heard that but
she was phenomenal and you can continue changing therapists trying new ones it better help has been
awesome and it does sound like there's a lot of people with sick kids at home we got megan said her
her littlest woke up with the fever we have uh let's see why why homing girl says rsv is in the house
right now dang it's not a fun face but honestly sean and i couldn't do anything so everything was
canceled and we let's see i was out for four days but i think it was a special time for you
and then the rest of the week when i was finally not contagious anymore and could spend time with
the kids it was really special it was so anyway um okay a couple things is
also brought to you by bolin branch that's right i could literally talk about bowl and branch all day it's
in every single room of our house we are huge fans and every time people come and stay they're always
asking us like my cousin has asked us specifically like what exact bull and branch sheets we have because
she wants to recreate them at her house you do a great job you know i'm not i'm not big on the whole
bed or i wasn't big on the whole bedding decor but you've crushed it much thanks to bolin branch but
Bull and Branch sheets are made from the finest 100% organic cotton threads on earth.
They make a difference you can truly feel night after night.
And they get softer every time you wash them.
Best of all, Bowen Branch gives you a 30-night worry free guarantee with free shipping and returns on all orders.
And with the holidays coming up, I couldn't recommend a better gift for someone.
Truly, it's awesome.
I feel like I've appreciated bed so much more with two toddlers in the house.
When we go to bed at night, it's like, man, I just want that to be a little slice of heaven right there.
these sheets do that so bring home a better night sleep this holiday season with bull and branch
bedding for a limited time offer get 20% off your first set of sheets and free shipping when you use
promo code east fam at bull and branch.com that's bull and branch b oll a and d branch.com promo code east
fam that's right all right do we want to pause and do another section let's do it work life balance
all these comments are great thank you for participating this is really a treat I miss doing
these we used to do live streams like once twice a month but but then it was just I was bad at
it so we stopped doing it I also want to say Paige Swanson she said ever since our shrink
chicks episode she's been wanting to do therapy with her husband and she loved that we mentioned
nothing has to be quote wrong in your relationship to do therapy um we learned this first
hand we did pre-marital counseling and I think this helps with work life balance just having
someone to talk to and like bounce ideas off of I the whole thing that's the whole thing
therapy has such a horrible stigma around it of like you have to be in the trenches and need help it's not like a white flag it's literally someone to just kind of be a mentor for you okay so the next section we have mocked up here is talking about why it's hard to have work life balance in today's world there was a time when we as americans worked during the day and had time at night to live life how we wanted to but i feel like in 2022 the culture is so
much different and it's always pushing us to do more make more money grind harder no
matter what the cost is to our personal life and well-being and i feel like it's chasing missed
it's like chasing nothing what do you do with more money what do you do with more money it's like
you want more money there's a study that your happiness plateaus after making a certain amount of
money so like just keep that in mind this is really hard for me and this makes me really sad because
the one of the blessings that came from I guess the pandemic is like this whole virtual world
being able to work virtually and work from home but I think one of the negatives that came
from working virtually is there's no 9 to 5 anymore it's you can continue working forever
literally forever you can clock in clock out whenever you want and in a world that is just like
how much can you do how fast how long and with all these like oh don't get even get me
started but all of these like Instagram CEOs who are preaching this unless you're working
57 hours a day and sacrificing your whole life and sacrificing your relationships and if you
aren't giving everything up and going into debt whatever then you're never going to make it like
that's just a load of crap and that makes me so mad because
Something we try to preach and, like, do here with our business is like, we want people to have a family.
And we want people to be able to go home and enjoy their husbands and their kids and actually have time and turn work off because, oh my gosh, it's just, it's exhausting.
Your local Benjamin Moore retailer is more than a paint expert.
There's someone with paint in their soul, a six cents honed over.
decades. And if you have a question about paint, it's almost as if they can read your mind.
I sense you need a two inch angle brush for the trim in your family room. Regal selected an
eggshell finish and directions to the post office. Benjamin Moore paint is only sold at locally
owned stores. Benjamin Moore, see the love. Again, making family the aspiration and not a bigger
house, a new job, more money, whatever it is. But I have some stats here for it.
us. In a survey of 1,000 full-time U.S. professionals, 77% of respondents said that they have
experienced employee burnout at their current job, and 83% of respondents said burnout from work
has negatively impacted their personal relationships. Think about that. Another study
published in July 2018 found that workers who were expected to check email at all times
of the day reported lower levels of health and well-being and less satisfaction in their
relationship with their significant others you know something I did last night what's that so you and I
went to bed at like eight right and I sat on my phone until 1030 doing what just like work stuff
looking up new content ideas and like all of these things and at 1030 as I like set my phone down
I literally was like no I can't do this anymore and I went into
my phone and I set all of like the screen time shut off and at 8 p.m. every night my phone
will shut off and at 8 a.m. every morning it will turn on and my social media accounts can't be
used for longer than an hour because it's just this like it is so draining to sit there and just be
sucked in by this idea of comparing and constantly competing with the world there's this word
intentionality that comes to mind it's like you could probably get more done in a shorter amount of time
if you're really intentional and less distracted it's like when we're working it's so easy like bring up
tic-tok and get lost in that for a half hour and then your focus gets broken and you have to spend
another five 10 minutes getting back in the zone so that you can work on the article that we're writing
or work on this proposal or like it's like you can if you're intentional with your time you could probably
be more efficient and get the things done that you want to but it's figuring out what do you
actually want done is the first step in that and being like hey i actually dinners with my family when
there's no tech no emails involved really makes me feel recharged and loved so let's design our
day around that okay a couple more comments then we let's go to our thousand dollar winners okay
tiffany huntington said it's so much harder to unplug and use the quote or the the the line
I have limited access to email excuse on vacation anymore and that's so true people like

emails yeah it's crazy it's so hard to escape anymore like you used to could just leave a job

Thank you for joining us. And we do have one more winner. That's a $10,000 giveaway winner.
that we're excited to talk about.
But let's first finish out this work-life balance episode.
Let's do it.
So how do you know if you need a better work-life balance?
According to a working psychologist, working for long periods without leaving your desk,
checking emails when you should be present with family or friends,
working weekends and eating lunch and dinner at your desk are all signs that you don't have good work-life balance.
So it might be time to make a change.
But we thought of some ways that you might be able to get a better sense of work-life balance.
Do you want to talk about the first one?
yes which is prioritizing your health um health is wealth uh-huh but truly it's just like having
the idea that if you are on your phone all the time and if you're feeling yourself defeated or
depleted if you're coming home super unhappy or depressed making time to check in with yourself
and see how you're doing are you able to spend 20 minutes a day 30 minutes a day to yourself
are you able to kind of prioritize your kids or your family or your spouse at all or is worked
truly just taking over everything.
And I think if you have those reflective periods of time
and you can answer those questions and be like,
yeah, I do have time for myself, then that's good.
And if you can answer, if you can't answer that and say yes,
then I think you need to start figuring out how to follow a routine
and implement some boundaries to allow yourself some space to just be you.
Great.

So make a list, literally write it down and then ask the people in your life if they feel like
your schedule reflects those priorities. That's a really fun conversation to have.
It probably will unlock some deep conversations that may be needed conversations.
And that's something that we've done is like, someone asks about how do you find your passion too?
Having conversations with other people of like, hey, you know what, Sean?
You want to know what you're passionate about?
Well, let me show you or let me tell you when I see you doing X, Y, Z, it seems like you're really in the zone.
You're really loving it.
You're really good at it.
Like, including other people on this journey can be really fun.
Ander and I do this thing every once in a while where we did it recently where we started to feel that burnout and feel like we were kind of losing ourselves and I remember Andrew asked me this question he said I need you to make a list of all of like the hobbies or activities or things that you do that kind of like fill you up so is it reading a book is it sitting around a fire is it going for a walk is it going shopping is getting your nails done whatever make a list and then Andrew did the same thing and we worked on making sure we could
schedule in one of those things a week and that's literally like to all of you who are like oh I work
seven jobs or whatever it is I yes I understand that but it's it's trying to schedule in like 30 minutes
a week start there where you can sit down and read a book to yourself or do something another thing
we thought of that can help you find work life balance is unplugging when you can clarify
what your work hours are and with your boss and co-workers and talk about what's expected
can be super helpful and it's like just having the conversation saying hey sir appreciate you
sitting down I want to be done with work at 5 p.m because that's when my kids uh let's see that's the one
hour I can see my kids and eat dinner with him so that's why it's important to me do we think we could
schedule work around that I think goes a really long way and it's like a healthy conversation to
have that should be respected right by the boss um next up is we kind of already talked about this but
unplugging when you can and finding a job you love so like throwing two in there but unplug when you
can get away from all of the opinions and all of the perfect filtered edited pictures and the competition
and this like these inputs just like get away from them as much as you can whether that's like
taking sunday off from your phone or tv or instagram or social media or whatever and then the
finding a job you love truly ask yourself and i know that's hard because it's hard to find jobs
these days but ask yourself if you're doing something that you enjoy and if you don't don't
quit your job but let's maybe start going down the road of finding a new one and then learning how to
say no too freaking we need to learn how to do this better but uh if you're constantly putting other people
what did you just talk about that are you laughing why you can't say no we're not good at that
lexie's laughing at us but if you're always putting other people's needs uh at work ahead of your own
look it's like great to be a team player and contributor that's for sure something we value but also
again establishing boundaries and saying hey I can't do this because I'm being intentional doing this
other thing instead so anyway let's do our last ad and then we'll come back and do the $10,000
giveaway and then maybe hit some some comments as well so a couple things is also sponsored by
Apollo neuro yeah so he recently discovered the Apollo wearable and it's been awesome
Apollo is a wearable device that actively improves your body's resilience to stress.
We all need this, especially everyone in the comments.
So you can relax, sleep, focus, recover, and feel better.
It's like a wearable hug for your nervous system that helps you be a calmer, more mindful
version of yourself.
Y'all know I'm a geek when it comes to wearables.
And I never found a wearable quite like this one.
Yeah.
Apollo's scientifically validated technology helps calm your nerves and clear your mind.

I've been using my Apollo device in the evenings to help me relax and I've noticed an
improvement in my sleep quality yeah so it's small you it's honestly so cool you can wear
on your wrist your ankle or as a clip attached to your clothing and it works by engaging
with your sense of touch delivering silent soothing vibrations that help you feel safe
in control this as a mom makes me feel like think of all the things

like the toys it's just having that sensory yeah soothing that that helps you and the more you use it

natural circadian rhythm and helps you become more resilient with your wake up and bedtime every

about how my voice sounds like ryan reynolds do you agree with that hey i mean he is like my celebrity
crush so i'll take it i thought i was your celebrity crush you are that's what i said thank you so
much um hey yours is blake lively okay we're not talking about that right now though let's say some
comments and then we'll do the giveaway let's do like three comments how about ready yes um let's start
with ronda berry i need advice for my student athlete first year college football he is struggling but mom
and dad can't really advise and he doesn't want to talk to someone he's in the medical field
i mean you can speak to this just college football balancing academics and athletics is just a lot
for everyone. I think just reassuring him that he's not alone. It's hard for everyone and that he'll
just like, I don't know, just stick with it. What would you say? I like your take on it. I'm looking at
Mark Blakely's comment where he says, how do you balance everything when you know that if there were people
who, that because there are people who prioritize work, we have the things like the iPhone, Microsoft Word,
and other things. So it's like talking about Steve Jobs, Elon Musk of the world is how I'm in
talking to this question. I really think we would still have those things. But if you look at a guy
like Elon, he's a CEO of multiple different companies, he probably isn't supposed to be the
CEO of a media company, right? Seems like he's really good with the STEM-based science engineering
type stuff. If he just eliminated that hurry in his world and injected some more work-life
balance, he could probably still develop the cool things that he has.
freaking PayPal and Tesla even though he didn't found it and SpaceX it's like you can do it
it's like just eliminating the things that are unnecessary that's my hot take on it was that too
passionate no it's good Whitney canateson says how can I help my husband's burnout at work as I'm a
stay-at-home mom I think that's I think it's the same for both of you it's so easy to be to get
burnout as a stay-at-home mom as well because that's a full-time job I think you just need to
have conversations you with your husband like I was saying
to Andrew where you list the things you good i'm good okay where you list the things that fill your
cup ask him what what you can do for him where you can schedule in time where he can have an hour to
himself or whatever it may be to kind of support each other all right we have a last comment from
