Starting point is 00:00:00 Come on this journey with me. Each week when you join me, we are going to chase down our goals. We overcome adversity and set you up for a better tomorrow. I'm ready for my closer. Hi, and welcome back. I'm so glad you're back here with me today. Okay, so I think I've shared this with you before. There are a lot of haters out there, right?
Starting point is 00:00:24 And that's fine. I mean, it really, haters are about them, right? It's not about us. It's about where they are in their life and, you know, what's going on with them. So we have to take it with a grain of salt. However, I have received some feedback that I post too much about getting fired and that I need to move on from it. Okay, here's, I want people to understand why I do things where I don't just randomly, I'm not on a rant about getting fired. I personally see getting fired as a launch point into greatness.
Starting point is 00:00:54 I see it as a launch pad. I saw it as firing my villain. I'm happy it happened. I wasn't that day, but I am now. So I'm not angry or upset about it, and I don't post about it trying to attack the lady that fired me. I never mentioned her name. It's not about her, right? It's about where I went with my career from that point on and how I used it as a reframe moment for myself.
Starting point is 00:01:16 And really, it was a blessing. So here's the thing is I talk about this because there are people out there that feel alone. there are people out there that have recently been fired. There are people out there that are hurt. They've been cheated on. They just got divorced. They didn't get the promotion. They're stuck in a toxic work environment.
Starting point is 00:01:35 They're being bullied by someone. There are people out there struggling and they need to know there's hope and there's a roadmap to get through and overcome where they are. Overcome your villains is that roadmap. And oh my gosh, the feedback recently and reviews on Amazon have been insane on Overcome Your Villains. I'm so grateful for that. Thank you.
Starting point is 00:01:55 Thank you so much. If you've left a review, thank you so much. If you haven't read the book yet, get the Audible. It is so much better than reading the book, I think, because I do this behind the scenes where I share what's really going on. And that's not included in the book, so it's super cool. And the feedback on that has been crazy. Okay. So here's the thing.
Starting point is 00:02:15 I post about getting fired because it's this really pivotal, important part of my story, and it gives other people hope. And even though I get some haters, I get way more nice DMs from people saying, thank you so much. You know, you've given me so much hope. Thank you for the work that you do. Thank you for being so transparent and sharing so on and so forth. And so, you know, for anyone out there that thinks, hey, Heather, you shouldn't post about getting fired anymore. That's why I do it. I just want you to understand that because I did get some nasty notes about it, which actually, I think is funny.
Starting point is 00:02:47 And they said they were going to unfollow me. So go for it. unfollow me if you don't like my content. I think that's fabulous, but you really should. If you don't like someone's content, don't follow them. Right. And if me saying that I got fired triggers you, well, you might want to look into what that's about, but also don't follow me for sure. And I wouldn't follow people that I felt, you know, weren't aligned with the things I want to hear about or, you know, when I talk about overcome your villains, I mean unfollow social media accounts that bring you down or trigger you, for sure. You know, don't read the press if that's
Starting point is 00:03:22 becoming your villain. A villain can be anything. It can be a job. It can be a work environment. It can be a person. It can be social media. It can be so many different things. But finding space in your life for you and the things that you love that elevate you and then finding joy in life's moments. That's what life's all about. I don't know why I didn't know this when I was younger. P.S., I only recently figured that out, which is kind of embarrassing, because I'm 47 years old and I'm just figuring out life is about enjoying moments and about finding joy in life every day. I used to think it was just about the rat race and the climb to the top. Truly, I did think that. Okay, but I found out I was wrong.
Starting point is 00:04:01 I've been wrong many times. All right, so I got this DM this morning, and it made me so happy. And this is why I do what I do, right? These are the moments that I just, I feel so grateful. And this is why feedback's really important. And I know I've told you this before, but your words can literally change somebody else's life. Elvis Duran spoke a belief into me when he told me in 2018 that I was writing a book.
Starting point is 00:04:26 He spoke that truth into me. And I did it. I would have never done it had that man not spoken that truth into me. So don't keep your words to yourself. Share your beliefs. Share your convictions and share the nice things that you have to say with other people. It could not only turn someone's day around, it could change the trajectory of their life. Okay. So I got this beautiful note today. Made me so happy and made me want to. It inspired me to
Starting point is 00:04:49 share this on the podcast today. Okay. I won't, I'm going to try to leave his name out, the company name, but here's the gist of it. Hey, Heather, I've been in radio for about as long as I was over 20 years and been very successful at it. However, I just found out that I haven't been delivering, you know, on these unreasonable revenue expectations in a very difficult year. And so we've agreed that I'm going to part ways. So I'm going to pause for a second. In radio, radio is an industry in decline. And I've shared this with you before. There are industries that are in growth phases. If your industry that you're in is not in a growth phase, leave, start finding other opportunities in industries where they are growing. It is so much easier and more fun to succeed in
Starting point is 00:05:31 environments where there's momentum and positivity. Gosh, I stayed in radio way too long. I was in an industry in decline, and I was the one responsible for the revenue. Talk about the whipping boy. That's who I was. Right. I was constantly getting the beat down. You have to grow this company. You have to figure out a way.
Starting point is 00:05:49 And you're in a really difficult environment in decline. Hello. Why did I stay there to begin with? If you're in a situation like that, pick your head up today. Start having conversations with people about getting out of that situation to a growth industry and growth field. Your skill sets will apply to an opportunity in another industry. You just have to start the process of making it happen.
Starting point is 00:06:10 Okay, back to this super nice message I got. Okay, so he's basically saying that he's getting fired, right? They're calling it, you know, agreed upon, but he's going to leave because he's not achieving the unrealistic goals. And I hear you, buddy. I totally hear you on this. If your anxiety, depression, or ADHD are more than a rough patch, you don't need just another meditation app.

The reason I'm reaching out to you is that I've been following you for a long time and you're
Starting point is 00:09:24 an inspiration to me showing that when one door closes, another door will open if you believe in yourself. You rose to the top in broadcasting, even despite all the challenges you had. And even when you left Beasley, you put yourself right back on top. I've always admired you and your story. I sit here now at 48 years old trying to figure out my next step. And even though I'm facing an end to my paycheck, he's getting his last paycheck next month, I keep getting down on myself.
Starting point is 00:09:50 Of course, that's totally normal. This is a huge change after more than two decades. Then I jump online and I see leaders like you, inspire me that everything will be okay as long as I believe in myself. Thank you for being vocal. Thank you for being a positive part of my career. And thank you, you know, for being you. I got this one way or another. I have value and another company will value my talents and history of success. Have a wonderful year. Okay. Nicest note ever and super grateful that he sent that to me and that he took the five minutes out of his day to send that to me means the world to me.
Starting point is 00:10:26 And it helps me through those moments when someone sends me a nasty comment saying, stop talking about getting fired. No one cares. Right? It's the universe's way of showing me I'm on the right track. So the next time you feel compelled to leave someone a review or give them a nice note or speak a truth that you believe for them into them, know that you could impact them in such a positive way.
Starting point is 00:10:49 And we're living in a negative world that needs all the positivity that we can get. Now, back to my friend that sent me this note. you know, here's the thing I wish I knew about when I got fired and what I want to share with him and with you about challenging situations. And he brought it up a couple times. It's really about that belief. He's right. Right. So whatever story you're telling yourself today, stop and ask yourself, is this belief that I'm holding helping me or is it hurting me? And if the story that you're holding and telling yourself, I'm not worthy, I'm getting fired, you know, this didn't work out. Nothing is going to go right for me. That's a self-fulfilling profit. So whatever story you tell yourself either empowers you to get ahead or it holds you back or holds you stuck. So change the story. Literally write a new narrative, write out on a piece of paper what you want the story to be. Yes, I did just get fired. And in fact, getting fired means I am in good company.
Starting point is 00:11:43 Oprah Winfrey got fired. Steve Jobs got fired. J.K. Rowling got fired. I'm excited about getting fired. This is my launch point. Not only do I believe that great things are going to happen for me, I already. see it coming into fruition. Get excited. There's a fine line between fear and excitement. And it's your choice. Just start saying out loud, I'm excited. New opportunities are going to come to you,
Starting point is 00:12:08 right? New doors will open as long as you leave the closed one behind. Say out loud, I release you radio industry. And from my friend that sent me this note on social, you don't need to stay in the radio industry. My sense from reading your message is that another company in the radio industry, is going to value. Why? Get the heck out of there. Go to a growth industry. Take a leap of faith. Bet on you and your skills. You're 48 years old with over two decades of business expertise and success. Leverage that for success somewhere else you want to go or double down and bet on you. That's what I did. Now, I will say this. When you double down and bet on you, it can feel really intimidating if you haven't done it before, like I hadn't. I'd always worked in corporate America.
Starting point is 00:12:53 but then I decided, you know, okay, if I'm going to start over as a beginner somewhere, I might as well just roll the dice on me and see what happens. And I was not believing enough in my potential and my guaranteed success. I wasn't there yet. I am finally now, but it took me a while to get there. That's one of the changes I would have made if I could go back. And this is what I want for you listening. If you are in those challenging moments right now, belief is everything, that belief that you can.
Starting point is 00:13:20 Here's how you obtain that. You start stating it before you even believe it. You start looking at your past success and saying that is social proof that I have that this next thing is going to work too. You fire the villains and negative people around you. You get them out of your life. And typically, if you've been in a toxic work environment, you're going to have fired your villains and get ready for launch and take off. I asked for help. That was another thing that I did right away when I got fired.
Starting point is 00:13:45 I put a post up and it said, hey, I just got fired if I've ever helped you in any way I need to hear from you now. That post went viral. Right? Ask people for help. Be vulnerable and be you. Don't dress differently. Don't put a mask on a proverbial mask, not the stupid COVID kind. But, you know, be the real you. When you show up as the real you, you will attract the right people towards you. For a long time in corporate America, I would put my hair in a bun, wear glasses when I didn't even need them, which is super annoying because now I do need them. But, you know, I was trying to be someone I wasn't because I, I I thought if I showed up in a different way that lady who hated me would like me.
Starting point is 00:14:27 Not only did it not make her like me, she could have cared less. She just always hated me. She was threatened by me, I'm pretty sure. But here's the thing. Not only did it not work, it didn't help my situation with her, but it made me less confident. It made me question myself more. It made me a weaker B-rate version of me, a non-real version of me.
Starting point is 00:14:48 And when I showed up as a weird, distorted, not-real version of me, the wrong people got attracted to me. People who were non-real versions of themselves. Starting point is 00:16:47 anywhere and everywhere, the more we're going to attract the right opportunities to us, partnerships, love, whatever, right? So step into that real you, own it, and really be intentional about your beliefs of what is possible for you. And remember this, successful people don't know the how they just believe in themselves that it will come to them. The answers will come, the doors will open. I've been saying so much lately when I work out in the morning, God, please close the doors that are no longer meant for me and please open the ones that are. Please steer me there. And I think about it all the time.
Starting point is 00:17:24 I'm very intentional about this. I want to be steered to that right partnership, that right product launch, that right idea for business, right? I'm so open to it. I don't need to have the answer today. The answer will reveal itself. And I know that, like I know it, like I know it. And I want you to know that, too.
Starting point is 00:17:44 Get intentional. Get clarity. Create space for yourself. Get rid of the negative people. Get rid of the negative social media. Create that space. Write down on a piece of paper what your goals are. Start visualizing them, thinking about it. You will start to materialize the answers and the way you don't need to know the way today. It will be revealed to you. That I definitely know. So I want you to have that belief. And the other thing that when I look back on when I first got fired, I did hang on to anger at first. I was so pissed at that lady. And I was pissed at her brother for not, you know, telling me because we had been close friends and he never told me.
Starting point is 00:18:26 I felt betrayed. I held on that negativity for a while. That was an epic fail. That slowed me down, right? Had I dropped that negativity, had I forgiven him, not on the phone, but just, you know, said out loud, I forgive you, I move on, I release you from my life. you know, I wish I had known to do those things. So I'm telling you now, it will help you, right? Forgiveness. And again, for yourself, not for the other person. And you don't need to call them. You can just say it out to the universe. You know, I release this person from my life. I forgive them for what wrongs have occurred. And I release the negativity. And I'm at peace. I have total acceptance to this situation. And I realized this was a gift to me. And I'm ready to start receiving the blessings ahead. And that pivotal. switch, you know, choosing to reframe it, choosing to see it differently, will open up the doors, just have faith, right? Martin Luther King Jr. talks about or talked about, faith is about taking
Starting point is 00:19:23 the first step even when you don't see the whole staircase. You just have to take the step. And I constantly have to remind myself about that, but that goes back to our beliefs and our beliefs in our self and our beliefs that we are safe in this world and this universe and the beliefs that goodwill come to us. In any situation, any time, there are people thriving, and there are people barely getting by, I truly know that the difference is in the knowing, in the believing. So get clear on believing in yourself. Get clear on that you don't have to have the whole way and answers figured out yet, but you do need to be open to receiving the blessings that are coming for you because they are. Just get clear on it. Make the space. Get rid of the negative
Starting point is 00:20:07 people, write down what some of these big time goals are that you have and start watching everything realigned to make sure that the right doors do open for you and show up as that powerful version of you. Remember, until we respect and believe in ourselves, no one else will either. So don't go into a job interview as a B-rate version of yourself. You'll attract B-rate people that don't really believe in you because you're not really believing in yourself. Show up as that most powerful version of you. Remind yourself of your past success. Remind yourself of who you are and what's made you successful up into this point and amp that up even further. The world needs more light and more goodness and you and I can bring it. We can play a role in this crazy world
Starting point is 00:20:53 that we live in. We can make the world a better, brighter place. But you've got to turn up that light and stop playing small. I think I've mentioned to you guys before. I am part of a creator team at LinkedIn. And so I have a creator manager and he happened to be in Miami and I met with him. And we were talking and he said, hey, if you could have anything, Heather, right now and I could have a hand in helping you, how could I be of help? And this is so cool. I said, oh my gosh, well, we're on the beginning of, you know, women's month is March and International Women's Day. I'm sure LinkedIn with its 400 million users is going to be doing something to highlight women, is there any way you could nominate me to be one of the women that they're going
Starting point is 00:21:36 to feature? And he said, well, yeah, I could do that. He said, and you could reach 400 million people. He said, but don't you think you should go bigger? And I sat there looking at him in stunned silence, right? Like, I thought that is big. 400 million people seeing my profile, possibly following me, possibly subscribing to my newsletter, possibly buying my book. Like the domino effect here could be huge, right, in my mind. And so I stopped for a minute and I thought, how could I go bigger? And I couldn't, it didn't come to me. So I said to him, well, how could I go bigger? And he said, have you seen our new TV commercial, global TV commercial that's literally reaching billions with the B billions of people? And I said, no. And he pulled out his phone and he showed it to me. And he said, did you see every
Starting point is 00:22:21 person that was in that ad? I said, yeah. He said they're all content creators on the content creation team just like you. And so in that moment, he, he, He opened my eyes, which I'm so grateful for, to there is bigger than what you even see today. I didn't know that that was even possible until he showed me what was possible. So I guarantee right now for you, you're not going big enough. You're not asking the universe, world, God for enough. You're not asking the people you're dealing with for enough because you don't realize there's something so much bigger available to you out there.
Starting point is 00:22:54 So yes, I'm going bigger in 2022, and I hope you do too. and for all my haters out there, no, I'm sending you love. I'm sending you light and I'm hoping for a better year for you. And for all of my rider dies, like that DM I got today, thank you so much. You make all the difference in my days, my years, and quality and joy in my life. I so appreciate the reviews that people have left of my book, of this show, for sharing the show.
