I started really taking ownership of my personal brand six years ago. It was a year before I got fired. And it's been game changing for me. And open doors that I can't imagine. It's allowed me to attract business to me instead of forcing me to always chase business down. It's allowed me to build trust with others before I even know and meet them. When I first started my personal brand, it was six years ago, I was in corporate America, I was a cheap revenue officer, and the whole initiative why I did it was I remember we had such it was so challenging to hire and recruit talent in the radio business. Nobody wanted it. Everyone was old and aging out. Like I couldn't find young talented. I couldn't find the jewelies of the world. Like I wanted young talented females specifically because I saw they were the ones that were accelerating and succeeding in sales. I couldn't even get meetings with these young people. And so I thought, okay, I am so sick of chasing people down.
Starting point is 00:12:05 I need to reverse the flow and attract people towards me. And that's what made me launch a personal brand, which is so interesting because now, that's how I convert all of what I create into business is I attract it to me. I don't run and chase down business anymore. I create posts and then I attract opportunity to me and then I convert. And you will do the same thing every single one of you.
Starting point is 00:12:25 So it works. And again, Gary V is like the father of all of this stuff. I do not come up with the idea. But I did it for my corporate job. And it ended up paying massive dividends for me personally that I could have never forecasted. So no matter how you're going to use your brand today, know that it is time well spent.
Starting point is 00:12:43 It's compounding value for you. And it's going to benefit you. And it's going to use your brand today, know that it is time well spent. It's compounding value for you. Like, and it's going to benefit you in so many ways, and you already have a brand, so why not be intentional about it, right? So get clear on what your attention is. I remember when I first started, this is how I started, was my brand was about empowering others
Starting point is 00:13:03 and teaching, it was big and important to you back then that I wanted people to know you could be a leader, you could be in the sea suite, if you grew up poor, if you have blue hair, if you have blonde hair and a ponytail or if you were skirts or didn't. Cause when I was a kid, they said you couldn't unless you were white, old and more blue pantsuits. And I didn't like that,
Starting point is 00:13:21 that I had been told a certain way and it wasn't real. So that was like my full message. That's all I wanted to talk about. And so that's how, my brands differ now, but that's how it started. So my point is there's no right or wrong how you start. The key is just to start, right?
Starting point is 00:13:37 So I launched a website, I took all my social media channels public and I had an intention and an initiative to be the one that was holding the pen while telling what my personal brand was about. And I would teach back then about how to get ahead and business how to get promoted in corporate America. That was really like how the whole thing started, but the goal was so that people could get to know me
Starting point is 00:14:00 so I could attract talent towards me and start firing that way of people coming in and DMing me asking for jobs. And that did work. It worked great. So get clear on what is your intention with your personal brand? You already have one. So let's get intentional about it. How do you want to appear to others? How do you want to impact others? What are those brand pillars? And again, they can change. Like my at first was about how to get ahead in corporate America. And it's evolved many times since then. As you evolve, your brand is going to change and evolve with you.
Starting point is 00:14:31 People do business with people they know and trust. When you are forward facing, founder stories and big companies or any companies are so powerful, people don't want to just hand their money over to some blank spate. They want to know the people they're doing business with, right? Like that personal founder story and every one of you is a founder of your own business and your own brand. You've got to be telling that story so people know who you are. They will be much more readily interested in doing business with you when they know, like, and trust you. And the easiest way to do that is through creating content that's real to you, posting on social,
Starting point is 00:15:09 being a guest on podcasts, speaking at events, being featured in different lists. All this stuff is giving you credentials and credibility and just allowing you to be more and better known. This allows you to reverse the flow of business. It is so much easier to attract business to you versus trying to chase down opportunity. It's easier, it's cost-effective, it's more efficient. Unique value proposition, and this is a question that you want to answer for yourself, what is special different unique about you?
Starting point is 00:15:40 And there is always something, I mean, it does not matter who you are, there is always something. Right, so understand that that frequency and expertise and background and experience and what makes you unique is gonna connect with a totally different audience and somebody else, even if you're seeing the same thing, there's still massive value in it. So, on that, figure out what is your unique value prop as those 10 people in your life,
Starting point is 00:16:02 how they see you differently so that you can start looking at yourself with those rose colored glasses, just like we did yesterday with the guy from the Navy. What white space can you own? Listen, you don't have to own a white space. I did because nobody back when I got fired was talking about getting fired, right? So it was sort of like a white space. Anytime you can own a white space, you're going to grow faster. It's just, it's fact, right? Because it's unique and different, but you don't have to own a white space in order to move forward with a personal brand to brand yourself. It's great when you can, but it's, it's not necessary, and that can happen over time as well. Depend on yourself if the power grid ever quits for a day or longer, January marked the third time a power station in North Carolina was damaged by gunfire recently. Starting point is 00:19:58 You're welcome. All right. Create community and convert. Okay. So listen, there's a plethora of different kinds of content. I'm simplifying it here because I just believe keep everything as simple as we can. But really, we're creating content to create community. So that could be my positive messaging stuff that I was saying earlier.
Starting point is 00:20:20 If success was easy, everybody would have it. And that's just a quote card. That's just creating community and and like adding value, right? I'm not asking. I'm not selling anything. Then there's content that is like directional in your face, like by this book now, like I'm converting into paying clients I'm seeing for business.
Starting point is 00:20:41 And then in my opinion, there's a merge and blend of both. And that's what I'm, I've been very intentional about doing a better job up. And where I made huge mistakes that I don't want you guys to make mistakes, I for years just created content to build community and didn't convert. Here's why that's a failure is number one I could have been making more money, which means I could be doing more good in the world and helping more people. Epic fail, but I also didn't even let people know how they could work with me. So people would want to be working with me and they wouldn't even know, right?
Starting point is 00:21:12 Because I wasn't making it available to them. And that same goes for all of you. Like, if we don't let people know, oh, here's how I could add value to you. Selling is helping, right? The more we show up and sell our services, our products and our offerings, we're helping other people. Don't deny people that opportunity
Starting point is 00:21:31 to get the help that they need, because truly that's what you're doing. That's what I was doing for years, because I thought, oh, I don't want to be too salesy on social, that's embarrassing. Actually Gary Vee has a great book. I think it's called Jab, jab, right hook, but his full strategy is around create content to build,
Starting point is 00:21:48 create, create content to build new boom, hit him with a sales hard pitch. So he does two and then one. So his, he, he'd be horrified if you knew just for years, I was just doing, no, no, no, no, right. Like his thing is to create community boom, hit him in the face with a sales pitch. If that is like, he's the freaking leader of all social media,
Starting point is 00:22:08 you know, or at least definitely one of them. And that's his success in building that. That's a, you know, again, only take direction from someone who's been where you want to go. That dude's always hitting you. He's selling his podcast. He's, you know, he's selling his books. He's selling his new companies, his new wine company. You know, he's selling everything. And Kelly Roach, the one that I showed companies, his new wine company. He's selling everything.
Starting point is 00:22:25 And Kelly Roach, the one that I showed you, you're going to follow her on social. She's awesome. She was the one that she's like, she hit me in the face. She's like, you're sleeping on multi-million in business. She's like, and I'm really disappointed in you. She hit me really hard. She's like, you're not converting people enough. And I just was like, wow, thank you for talking to that.
Starting point is 00:22:43 So meaning, I still create content, which is like some of the quote cards I said, but I will always, when you go to the comments, that first comment is from me converting them to something. I'm either saying need more support, like the post above, slick here, and I've got your back, and it's driving them to my podcast,

Starting point is 00:23:20 Can I think, like, listen, and it's nicer, because it's like, listen, some people aren't even going to see that you guys, right? Like, not everyone's going to go look at my comments, but sometimes people will see it and sometimes it does convert and it's worth doing. Like, don't, don't sleep on the opportunity. It's not offensive at all. And, and I, I'm so glad I'm doing it. Now I wish I had done this sooner. I never post on my business page. The reality is your personal page will do exponentially better than your business page. It's just fact, people do business with people. Right, no one really wants to do business with your company.
Starting point is 00:23:52 You need to have the company profile up to connect it back and I have followers in my business page but I don't really do anything with that. I connect it to so people can see, oh, there's different offerings on here or whatever but I really am not good at posting from it. And my mindset is, I don't have a team of a hundred people like Gary Vee, right?
Starting point is 00:24:10 If I did, yeah, great content all day long boys, like go set it up and let's get it up. But I don't have that much bandwidth. So to me, I wanna be effective, efficient, and where is my best ROI? That's from my personal brand. One day, I will have those guys up there and that's what they'll do.
Starting point is 00:24:25 But for right now, I want to focus where I get the return and where I get the return is on my personal brand 100%. And there's so many different things you can do. Like, if I was going to spend more time, I would spend more time in the comments. If I was going to spend more time, I'd spend time on my competitors comments, right? And looing their audience over to me. If I was going to spend more time, I'd be targeting more companies competitors' comments, and luring their audience over to me.
Starting point is 00:24:45 If I was gonna spend more time, I'd be targeting more companies that I wanna speak for because I saw my competitors spoke for them last year, and I'd be in their comments, so I show up. So they see me, oh, there's Heather. I should check out Heather. Maybe she shouldn't speak for us, right? There's so many savvy ways that you can get into people's heads
Starting point is 00:25:01 just by going and gauging on their comments. And then there's a whole DM strategy that you can have by going into the DMs and shooting people, Hey, I saw that you like my post recently and meant the world to me. There's so many, to me, that's better use of my time versus creating content for my business page. That's just my opinion on it. Starting point is 00:27:12 And there was a new story of the submarine that, you know, the people were trapped in and whatnot. And it's a horrible story. But, you know, what is the business situation there that you could add some perspective from? Like anything, like there's anything that when it's trending, like you can just talk about that trending situation and like relate it back to your audience and to you
Starting point is 00:27:33 and like how you would have handled it differently or like or you know, just your perspective on it or what you thought they did well or didn't do it. Like all of that is content. So sometimes people get hung up on like, what am I gonna create for content? Take a look at all of these trending news stories. There's so many that you can jump on.
Starting point is 00:27:49 Again, it doesn't just have to be unique to your industry. It can be your spin and take on it. And maybe you're in sales and you're like, okay, here's how I would frame this up. What are your thoughts? Give it to me below. And then now all of a sudden your community's commenting on how they would have framed it up differently, right?
Starting point is 00:28:06 And then gave and starts spiking. I decided to change that thing and I'm like, I could have been more excited for what you're getting here. Start learning and growing. And inevitably something will happen. No one succeeds alone. You don't stop and look around once in a while. You can miss it.
