She holds a PhD in STEM cell biology
and tissue engineering.
She's a co-inventor of five patents
and co-author of numerous scientific publications.
She relocated from Brazil to Silicon Valley in 2016
to found one skin, a fast growing longevity company
developing products to promote skin age reversal by targeting a central driver of aging,
the accumulation of senescent cells. Carolina and her team are disrupting the outdated
anti-aging skincare industry with their groundbreaking research around skin and longevity. Carolina, thank you so much for being here today.
Thank you so much for having me.
I'm excited for this chatting.
Oh my gosh, I am too.
So, Carolina, will you take us back to
you were living in Brazil?
I mean, this is just a big jump that you've left Brazil,
moved to the US, started a company.
I mean, to me, it just sounds like a lot.
So can you give us a little background
into how this happened?
Yeah, definitely.
So I was in Brazil, finished my PhD around by 2014.
And I always wanted to translate to the science
that I was developing for so many years in academia
in order to create something to really bring an impact to people's lives.
And after I was finished my PhD, and at that point, we were studying a lot of STEM cell biology
in tissue engineering, and basically how we can replicate human tissues in the lab.
So we started a project back in Brazil, basically another company.
We tried to make that company work for two years
for several reasons.
It didn't work out.
Like the Brazilian ecosystem for biotech
was not, you know, ready yet,
the market was not really big enough
to absorb our technology.
So we were looking for ways that we can, you know,
basically keep that dream alive and continue to work on this project. So we found this opportunity at an accelerator here in San Francisco called in the bio.
And in the bio was just like the perfect place for us to be because they basically help like scientists to become entrepreneurs and to start a company. And this was like a lot of what I was not finding Brazil,
that kind of resource, that kind of knowledge.
So I moved here in 2016, and I was honestly not prepared.
Like I was a scientist, I was definitely not an entrepreneur.
I had a very basic English, and I didn't know anyone in the city.
You know, I saw this as an opportunity to make this dream happen.
So I packed my bags and I came here.
And it was a very challenging time.
Obviously, at the beginning, we didn't know exactly
what would be our product or our technology.
So we went through several different like pivots. So basically we started
with this approach of growing human skins in the lab to replace animal testing. This was already
like a demand that we were seeing like from several industries, but mainly from the cosmetic
industry that it does not justify to test animals to develop a cosmetic. So, basically, we could grow human skins in the lab and you can test this new cosmetics
in the skin tissues that we grow and this could be, you know, a great way to test those products
and not use animals. But we didn't get a lot of traction for this first idea. So, we pivot
to the second idea that was, okay, let's test how this
anti-aging products work if they actually work because we know that anti-age is a huge, obviously
market, everyone is crazy about it, but consumers are still lost like how do I know if this product
is actually promoting any rejuvenation effect. There are so many marketing claims,
and unfortunately, there's a lot of like pseudoscience
and snake oil as well.
So we thought, okay, we can offer these skins that we grow
and measure the age of this tissue
that we are growing the lab and see if any product can,
you know, change the biological age of this skin.
I really like reducing the biological age of this skin, ideally reducing the biological age of this skin.
So we started to get more traction there.
We saw, okay, companies were in treasurer,
like I wanna validate if my product
can actually rejuvenate this skin.
And consumers were also in treasurer,
like I wanna know if the product that I'm using
is actually rejuvenating this skin.
But what we found really fast is that none of the products that were in the market, they were designed to target
aging itself. So basically, the products are designed to improve like the surface of the skin,
but aging is happening at the deeper levels of the skin and all of the companies, all of their products, were basically missing the market.
And because we are scientists and because we are on top of the latest research around
like the biology of aging and we know what's driving aging at the cellular level that if
we intervene there, we could promote a better effect.
We decided like, okay, we're not testing products,
we're going to develop a new product that can actually target aging at the source and promote
a real age reversal effect. But it took us like a few years to actually land into the product that
we are today. So a lot of research, a lot of learnings. How did you not give up during this time?

That's a great question.
When I was 18, I remember that my dad gave me this book about, you know,
kind of how to succeed in life and the first thing is to have a very clear purpose.
And the beginning, I didn't know like what was my purpose.
But with time, like, I knew that I love science and I knew that I love like helping people
to live better, like live a better life. So in the beginning, I thought, okay, maybe I'll find a cure,
I'll be a scientist and I'll find a cure for disease. And then that's it, right? Like I made my
contribution. But then when I started studying aging, I was like, okay, if I can actually target aging and then we are living
healthier for longer, so basically are preventing the diseases. So I'm helping people in a much more impactful way.
That really resonated with me. And when things were going really hard, I was trying to, okay, if this doesn't work out,
what I'm gonna do, I'm gonna go back to Brazil,
I'm gonna work for a biotech company,
and I couldn't picture myself doing anything else.
And then I thought, okay, I found this as my purpose,
like this is gonna work no matter what,
and I'm just gonna keep doing my best every day.
The first year was like the hardest one. I really pushed like my limits
and I went through some really, you know, down moments during this accelerator program. There was
time that we were presenting and there was a rank of all the companies that were presenting and
I was not doing well and we were like the last one the ring. And that day, I felt like really, I don't know,
I felt like really down, but I didn't give up.
And at the same day, I also got an email that gave us an opportunity later on in the future
to present the company.
And then on that second presentation, I won the best speech.
And that opened so many doors for me. So looking back it's
just so interesting how you see that a lot of times like there will be so many reasons for you to
give up but there is also like a small sign that you shouldn't give up you know you are invited to
do this and I was always like you know holding into all the opportunities that I had and I was always like, you know, holding into all the opportunities that I had.
And I knew that I could do it. I knew that a lot of people told me,
hey, maybe you should go back to Brazil and try something there.
Maybe this is not for you. And then, you know, I was like, okay, you were on my list.
I'll prove you wrong. So I'll stay in like, in a few years.
Yeah, so I think you need to have very like that certain
side of you that you are doing like what you should be doing.
If you don't see you doing anything else, just like keep going.
And obviously it's hard. I mean, that's why most company fails.
That's why obviously it's hard to succeed in life because it requires a lot of resilience, a lot of determination.
And really, I just built that, you know, thick skin because I was punched so many times, you know, in the face, like in so many ways, not only in professional, but my personal life, I had so many challenges that it just keep building that inner strength
that you just know that coding this toysism,
the obstacle is the way, keep going, keep going.

So true, but that's not easy what you did the amount of pivoting and then the determination
and the commitment to not knowing exactly how that was going to unfold. How long did it
actually take you to come up with your first one skin product where you felt I've got
something. Yeah, so when we decided really to research this new product and find a new molecule that could
actually target aging, it took us around like three, four years. And I know it's because we are
being like really truthful when we talk about like we want to make a significant impact in reversing aging is it's
hard obviously you know humanity is trying to figure out this for you know 2000 years or more so
I think we were very diligent and rigorous with our research so we only would bring something to
the market when we felt that we had something like better than anything else and it was like worth pursuing that idea.
So it took us around like three, four years and then once we found our main peptide and I can
explain more how it works. Okay, we saw, okay, we have something that's really unique, really powerful.
I think there is a great opportunity for us to bring this to the market and really communicate how was this developed? Because this was not developed using the classic, I would say, cosmetic
rational. There was like a more, you know, biotech or pharmaceutical rational, like really trying to
address the root cause of aging, validating this internally. So we thought that there was an opportunity to bring this story.
And also like the concept of longevity, of like helping people to not only live longer,
but live healthier, you know, kind of getting the knowledge that will help us to make better
choices today so we can experience a better health tomorrow. So we decided to create a brand which was another challenge
because obviously scientists are not marketers.
And then a lot of people again doubted that,
oh, you girls are like,
this is not for you, like this.
Creating a brand is easier for you to,
I don't know, publish a paper.
Anyways, again, we ignored those people
and we said, okay okay we're gonna bring this
product to the market. So it took us another year and a half to really like get
the product message in the visual identities and all they is strategy to bring
the product to the market. So we finally launched in 2021 and the first year was
it's still a very challenging year because we're, again, learning how to
commercialize a product.
Everything is new for us.
We don't know any marketing tactics.
We're learning on the fly.
But one thing that we're really good is really to be able to learn fast and adapt, like
really fast things and like, okay, this is not work.
Let's try something else.
And then on the second year that we had our product
to the market, things started to take off.
And today we're in a very healthy place.
The company's growing, the company basically pays itself
already.
So we pass through that phase that we call the best value,
right?
That pure that anything can happen in your company can die.
You run out of money, you're out of business, and that's simply it.
So, yeah, I think looking back, there were a lot of ups and downs, but today,
it's really good to see that all these efforts and the investment that we put on the research
is paying off off because consumers
are really happy with the product. We have great results and so that's exciting now.
Yeah, no, that's such a great point that you make because a lot of times and I so feel
what you're saying in my own regard for my business, when you get into something new,
when you take a risk on yourself, when you're trying to create a new space,
there are no guarantees and your belief in yourself,
your commitment to your purpose and your passion
propelled you facing the naysayers,
facing the people telling you to go home.
And then once you were able to even get that product,
that was a great realization.
You made, oh, now we need to figure out marketing.
Now we need to figure out how to launch a brand.
Wait a minute.
This is what we were good at, the science.
And now we have to figure this whole thing out.
That is so true.
And any time you try something and you start stumbling into,
oh, and then there's this next level that I have to figure out
and unlock.
So good for you, that you didn't let that stop you.
Yeah, no, thank you.
And actually, I enjoy this process.
I think one of the beauty of being an entrepreneur is,
at least for me, like first time entrepreneur,
is just like learning every day, every day is a new thing.
I need to learn about how to scale a company now,
how even you know potential to diversify your marketing
channels and hire people and keep
me people motivated. So every day is a new challenge and it just keep like you're bringing
really like you know open and active and excited to learn and to tackle that next challenge
and then give me the next one. Here we you. I can see that you are so motivated.
Tell us a little bit about the science behind one skin and how it's so different from everything
else that's out there.
Yeah.
So as I was sharing, when we looked at all the anti-aging products in the market, what we
realized, most of them were either based on retinal or acids, or even they have some
peptides that can induce collagen,
but none of them were actually targeting
what's causing aging at the cellular level.
So retinols, for example, how they work,
like they induce what we call cell renew,
so it causes a peeling effect,
like the upper layers of your skin are peeling out,
and then you are growing a newer layer
of your skin. But that doesn't mean that we are tackling what is actually driving agents.
So you are just growing like a newer freshers skin, not necessarily a younger skin. The main
like downside of red now is the side effects, right? A lot of times people will experience like irritation, inflammation, and
while you are peeling off, you are basically removing your skin barrier, which is
so important to protect your skin against the environmental stressors and
pathogens and pollution. So retinitis is kind of a double-edged sort in a way
that it will make it look good,
but it has like some, you compromise your skin,
at least for a period of time.
So when we looked at the science of aging,
we found one mechanism that was behind all tissues aging,
not only the skin, and this mechanism
is the accumulation of damage cells,
also called senescent cells,
that build up in our tissues over time. And basically those senescence or zombie cells, we call them
zombie cells, are cells that are already like really damaged, they have divided either like over
50 times, they should not continue to divide otherwise they could even become like a cancer. So they stop dividing
and they start secreting inflammatory signals that spires the healthy cells around the two age
faster. So we like to compare a senescent cell with like a rotten apple in a basket because one
you know bad apple can really spoil the good cells. So that's what's happening in our tissues when we have senescent cells like those cells
are really basically deteriorating the tissue.
And our hypothesis was, and we saw other studies
that were doing this successfully for other tissues.
If we can remove those senescent cells
just like the bad cells, then the healthy cells
will proliferate, we start to function normally again, we start
producing more collagen, this improves your skin barrier, and this, you know, even improves your
appearance as well. So no one was doing this in the industry, so we decided to start testing new
molecules, more specifically peptides, because peptides, it's a biological molecule, it's obviously a small piece of a protein
and it is generally safe. So we tested nearly a thousand different peptides in the lab to find
which one could actually decrease the amount of those senescent cells in the skin. So again,
these took us around like two, three years. Once we found this peptide, we tested like in aged skins
that we can grow in the labs.
And we could see that the peptide by reducing the amount of those
senes and cells reactivates collagen production again
induces proliferation, is strengthens your skin barrier
and improves like the thickness of the epidermal layer as well.
Meaning that your skin is stronger,
is more functional, more resilient.
And we can actually measure how much we are reducing
the age of the skin as well.
So we can quantify that we reduce like 2.5 years
the age of the skin in the lab
over course of like five days. Obviously this is a lab experiment. We can translate exactly to humans, but it shows us like, okay, is that different just targeting the surface of the skin,
this peptide can actually penetrate,
go to the deeper layers and reduce
the amount of those aged cells and then help
your own tissue to basically regenerate
and rejuvenate the skin from the inside out.
And the other great point is that
there is no irritation of no side effects. It actually helps like reducing inflammation
and sensitization. So I usually say people love retinol for whatever reason,
combine with a product like ours because we'll help like counter the react to this side effects of red no. So at least you can get like the best of both sides. Oh, if red no is not for you,
this is like a great alternative. And a lot of people have switched and have seen also
better results as well.
Yeah, I mean, I use the products and have been using the products for months now. And
I will tell you, I am a person and I don't know if anyone listening has a sensitive
skin.
And I've had sensitive skin of my whole life, whether it be I could get a rash on my
arm from, I mean, virtually nothing, you know, walking outside to my skin gets very,
very red and, you know, it can feel hot.
And I was signed up for retinol for years because that's what society has told us.
Yeah, I didn't know any better, right?
We only know what we know.
I'm not a scientist and I'm not setting it
like how you devoted your life to this.
So it's so interesting because the majority of companies
are selling and pushing retinol,
that's the messaging I hear as a consumer
and I continue to buy it.
And like you said, I see, I can tell
because I can see skin coming off.
So I'm like, you gotta be working great. Well, I stopped using the retinal when I started using one skin.
And it was so interesting. A couple of things came up for me. I'm 49 years old.
And I will tell you, sometimes I was having breakouts at 49, like, what is this?
I need to deal with fighting wringles. I can't all of a sudden be having adult onset acne
that I would joke with people and say this,
but it was truly because now that I've used your products
and read so much about your science,
my skin was irritated and like you said,
there was inflammation that I was dealing with
that I don't have any ish,
I mean, it's completely gone.
And there was also that element of feeling
like your skin looks thin.
And I, mm-hmm.
There are people you will see on the streets
and their skin just looks thin, like something's off.
And you don't know.
I even felt a difference.
And like you said, like, it seems my skin seems stronger.
It's not red anymore.
I'm not having any breakouts.
My skin looks hydrated, but the craziest part, Caroline,
and I hope you can explain this.
And it's hard from a consumer standpoint is,
I don't have to use 18 products to have success
with one skin, and it freaks me out sometimes.
I'm like, someone will see me getting ready.
And they're like, you're not gonna use a hydrating serum.
You're not gonna use this.
And I'm like, stop it.
I'm just trying to follow the program
because it's working, and just want to stick to it
So how it's very very confusing
Yeah, but I mean in the end I think the industry pushed us like so much on like you need more products and more products and more products
And honestly, that's not the reality like if you find like where we you should like
reality, like if you find like where you should like intervene to really address the problem, you can get like with a few products, you can get like your best, your health is skin. So that's
like the philosophy at one scene. And honestly, the more products that you put out there is just,
I mean, for people it's confusing, you needed to evaluate all the ingredients if they work for you, if you're
not going to have any sensitization to any ingredients. So if you can nail down, what are
the main ingredients that can make a difference in your skin and can really address the problem
at the source? That's what we believe that's the best thing to do. Because in the end, obviously,
you need to nurture your skin,
you need to support your skin health,
but you don't need like 10 products to do that.
And a lot of times more,
it's just like causing more, you know,
stripping is just like,
you can easily compromise your skin
with so many products out there.
So being very thoughtful, very mindful of like, what are
the essential ones?
And stick to them consistently.
I obviously consistence is really important to see results.
But that's why we like to simplify.
So it makes easier for people to follow like the routine.
I'll tell you personally that I had just in the past two
years started noticing that my skin on my legs seemed like
creepy.
Nothing, I'm sure other people probably weren't noticing it,
but I certainly was noticing it.
And I never stopped to think, oh, there's got to be a
product out there.
I mean, thank goodness you stopped to create one.
But when I started using the body part, I literally saw, I would say it was within two weeks.
I mean, it was noticeable difference.
My skin is not creepy at all anymore.
I'm like, how does that happen so quickly?
Yeah, it's all about the peptide
and the other supporting ingredients
that basically help you skin to produce more collagen again.
So, you know, the creats comes with like the loss of collagen,
the breakdown of collagen that comes with the aging process.
So, our cells are still there and they just need like some kind of, you know,
some push, some activation to start like doing what they used to do again.
And obviously remove those bad cells that are, cells that are kind of impairing the good cells
to work at their best.
So I'm so glad that you share that
because the body has been like a great success
for so many people.
And even for older people that when they skin
gets pretty fragile and tends to tear really easily,
people have seen amazing improvements in their quality of lives because they used to get
bruises skin all the time.
They used to be flaking, eating.
And that obviously affects your day to day.
And we were happy to be helping these people to ameliorate those conditions.
So it's so interesting how we decided from a moisturizer,
we already went to your body because we don't want to ignore
like the 97% of your skin, that's the rest of your body.
And a lot of companies just focus like 10 to 20
products for your face and don't care about your body.
And in the end, we need to treat the skin as a whole,
right?
Like the skin is our largest organ.
It is like protecting our whole body.

We have data showing that the skin aging and the generation
because it accumulates those senescent cells that
start producing inflammation can actually impact
our blood levels of inflammation
because the skin is kind of covering your whole body. So if the inflammation is coming from
your skin eventually we'll get into our blood. So one of the studies that we ran with the body
product was actually treat your skin topically and collect blood and measure the effect of a
topical product on the levels
of inflammation in your blood.
And we could see that in three months, we can significantly decrease some of inflammatory
cytokines that's in the blood.
So really interesting to see like, okay, I need to take care of my skin.
It is impacting my overall health.
Like inflammation is one of the main drivers
of age-related diseases and chronic diseases. So if my skin is a source of inflammation, I need
to treat my skin as well. So I think there's so much that comes with this product and we are really
proud that people are seeing, like benefits like you're seeing, but we're delivering even more that you can't even see.
When you advise people that are trying to products for the first time, what do you like to
tell them in regards to when they can typically see results? I mean mine came within two weeks,
but is that normal? Yeah, that's a great question. We run clinical studies for all of our products. But so on the clinical study, we usually measured the efficacy
after six and 12 weeks.
And we see that after six weeks, you can already see a significant improvement
and it gets better with 12 weeks.
So it gets better with time.
But some people will see results earlier.
I think you're too very depending on each skin type.
I would say that from two to four weeks, you can already see an improvement in hydration
in your texture, on the roughness of your skin.
It's going to feel much more like smoother, but the real makeup of changing the makeup
and inducing collagen, this can take up to three months. So we ask our consumers to try it for three months.
Some people will see much earlier, some people will see around three months or even a little later, it varies. But that's the data that we been conditioned like I was that you have to be peeling your skin off and you need to have retinol all the time.
How do you advise them to make that leave because I know for me initially I was like, oh gosh, I'm so nervous to take a month off to even give it a shot.
I'm so grateful I did it, but that was one of the things that I was thinking about. Yeah. And honestly, I was exactly like you. I started using Red now because I had acne.
And then I kept using for its anti-aging properties. And I was peeling all the time and I was like,
okay, I'm getting younger. And that's I don't like how I look. But okay, this is for a good purpose,
you know. And then it wasn't until we start testing red now comparing other molecules in the lab
that, okay, this is supposed to be our gold standard.
So this should perform really well.
And when we start seeing the genes associated with aging and inflammation, going like super
high, that's not how it's supposed to be. So at that point,
I basically stop using red now. And what I usually say is that, okay, this could be the acute
phase of red now. In which the beginning, you can get like more redness, more inflammation.
Your skin can either adapt over time. If you feel that you're still like peeling and inflamed. This is
definitely not good. So usually we recommend if you can adapt you can use
retina like two or three times a week in a way that don't feel that your skin
is being like sensitive or I would say even like vulnerable because for example
when you're peeling if you go to the, you feel that you are much more susceptible to sun damage.
So this is definitely not good.
So if you feel that red now is not like compromises,
can still like, and parents with a product,
with like hours that can really like nurture
and help your skin from the inside out.
I'd say, okay, if you want to continue two, three times a week, only at night,
but if you want to, you know, completely switch to your product that does not cause any
irritation and targets like the root cause of aging and induces collagen, hyaluronic acid,
the similar levels of retina, one scheme is like a great alternative.

What age should people start using your products?
There is no, I would say, limit in terms of how young.
Usually we say, like, when you are 25,
if you're already looking to prevent aging,
our product works really well on the preventative side because it
basically helps your skin cells to be more efficient in repairing damage. So if
you're exposed to, you know, sun all the time, it's good to have a product that
will help your skin to always be fighting those aging docers. But most people
that use our product, they are over 30s because they already have the
signs of aging and they want to basically treat those signs or minimize the wrinkles and the fine
lines. So there is no limit from 20, 25 to customers that are 80s and they are still seeing results
and they send us the before and afters and it's on
the website that you guys can check and it's so impressive, it's so nice to see when someone,
oh I'm 67 years old, I start to use your products and you know I had amazing results, this is
why before and after, this is kind of the best rewards from our work
to really see how we are impacting people

What about how many, I'm thinking of everything

on their journey. Well, I personally think it's a great part for men
because men don't want to be doing something that's seven or ten steps.
Exactly. A simple, right? Like a...
Simple. Wash your face, put a moisturizer, you're done.
And now we are coming up with a sunscreen
soon. So it'll be like the last step that's missing. So that'll be super exciting because we have
also great data on this sunscreen because we added the peptide. So the sunscreen protects from
the damage, but the peptide helps reversing the damage. So if you have accumulated damage over time, which
many people have, like a lot of people like sun tanning and doing all the crazy stuff,
and we didn't know better at the time, right? It was lack of information. So we're really

the skin here, it's around 20 to 30 years older than just the skin around your cheeks or temple.
So can you imagine that like this skin ages, we know that ages faster, but having this biological data was so interesting.
So we know that accumulates more of those senescent cells.
So we decided to create a very powerful formulation
that contains a higher concentration of the peptide
and other active that helps like with the puffness,
like circles and really other concerns around your eyes.
And the clinical study from this product
is the strongest one.
Like we see amazing improvement on hydration,
on elasticity, on firmness, and the skin barriers,
well, many that the skin is getting thicker,
is getting stronger.
So we launched
this product at the beginning of the year, and it's been like, you know, already our second best

It's so simple. It's scary, but it works. It is incredible. And one of the things I want to mention to you, you're packaging and how thoughtful you were about your, if you can just talk to us a little bit about that's really impressive.
Yeah, obviously we care about helping people's health, but we also care about our planet. And we feel so bad when we see so much plastic out there

They're kind of, you know, we can collaborate or if you're
you know, interested in exiting, let us know. But from the other ones, I don't think that we're
not getting any attack or anything because we have the data to prove everything that we say. So
it's hard to fight against the data, right? So I think we have this amazing advantage that
the data, right? So I think we have this amazing advantage that we continue to have like our research team in the lab that is developing the science and generating the data. And if you are a subscriber,

Is there anyone that shouldn't be using the ones can products?
they are designed to be safe first for every single skin type. So as I said, it works for people from 25 to whatever age they are different skin types.
So we haven't had any significant adverse effect from a different skin type.
So it's definitely suitable for our skin types.
And you said that you cancel, you use retina,
you just want to use that on a different day
and take a day off from using one skin.
No, actually you can use in conjunction.
So I definitely recommend either like applying one skin first
and retina on top, basically you are creating a layer
of protection when you have one skin.
And then you add the red now to do do its work but without again damaging your skin.
