But you know what?
This road rage is getting so common.
And I've seen them all over the news.
A fit of rage lands a man in prison likely for the rest of his life.
I have the details on how one moment of anger turned into a lifetime of consequences for a man in Florida.
Welcome to Crime Fix. I'm Annette Levy. Acting on anger, it is never, ever a good thing. And it can come with irreversible and sometimes tragic outcomes. In recent months, I've seen a number of road rage incidents with reports noting aggressive behavior and intense confrontations. In extreme cases, they end in violence. And this one was no different.
A flood of calls came into police on January 22nd, 2024, just before 6.30 a.m.
First, there was a female caller.
Orleans, the police 911, this is the human recorded line.
What is the location of your emergency?
I think there was a road rage incident.
There was a white car trying to get into, they were in the middle lane trying to get
to the left lane, and they were blocking the land of traffic behind them.
And as I was passing them in the right most lane, I heard what sounded like.
gunshots and the white car has like their window down and they were yelling at the car behind them
and the whole how many gunshots do you think that you heard like three you think you heard about
three did if anybody was shot i don't think so how long ago was it was like uh maybe a minute ago
luckily other witnesses called in and the second caller that was a man he said the driver of the
vehicle needed medical attention quickly.
I think maybe someone's been shot.
So why do you think someone's been shot?
I've seen a lady get out of a car and shoot as a dude in the car in the car in front of her.
And was it like a handgun or a rifle or a shotgun?
Bandgun.
Okay.
And what was she wearing?
Do you remember what she was wearing or no?
Like a sweatshirt, I believe.
Deputies in Orange County, Florida, were the first to arrive on scene.
If you could block that, you turn off right there.
They said it happened as in the intersection,
but they don't know exactly where, but you'll just start taping it off.
All the county's working it.
Now, because of the nature of the call, this is a multi-agency response, so all hands are on deck.
They said it happened right here, so I'm going to get these cars out of here,
and I'm starting looking for the shell cases, and I'm here in this area,
and they'll probably just take this off right here.
What's in Heather up there?
The police are dispatched to the intersection where callers reported the shooting occurred,
but neither of the subjects involved are in sight.
However, in the far left lane, police spot and recover three 45 caliber shell casings.
Certain deputies are tasked with canvassing the area in a nearby parking lot.
They locate the victim's vehicle near the shooting incident.
The victim was bleeding from the head, unconscious, and not breathing.
Deputies pulled the unconscious man out of the vehicle to perform CPR and other life-saving measures,
until EMS arrived. Then a fourth shell casing was recovered in the plastic cover at the bottom
of the windshield on the passenger side. Two more were discovered near the rear window and trunk lid.
So a total of six rounds were fired from a firearm, which strongly suggests this was no
accident. It was intentional. As police are interviewing eyewitnesses, the other vehicle involved in
the incident pulls into the same lot. A witness points to the suspect. He's a Latino-looking male
with black hair, a black beard, and he's a little scruffy. The alleged shooter was identified
as 26-year-old Nicholas Carasquillo, and deputies detained him. With the suspect in custody,
half the job was done. While officers secure the scene and start the investigation, a woman
approaches. Matt, were you able to get in contact? This way. Where you trying to go?
What?
The Blue Hyundai.
What about a Blue Hyundai?
If you want to call me.
Okay.
What do you mean?
Um, is this where...
Walk over this way with me.
What's the deal with the Blue Hyundai?
I just find out over there she's supposed to be with somebody who's the occupant of the Blue Hyundai.
What's your name?
Give us a couple minutes.
Who are you trying to make contact with?
Nicholas.
Nicholas what?
Could you spell that?
C-A-R-R-A-S-T-U-I-O-O.
That young female turns out to be the suspect's girlfriend.
Following the shooting, Carasquio allegedly called her
and asked her to come to the scene.
Deputies see if she has any insight as to what happened.
Coming from your house? Where are you coming from?
Okay. You live in the area?
Okay.
Okay. Let's go over.
What about?
What about?
and then I got me to my phone on.
Okay.
And she said, I'm pulled over.
That's how that works.
I'm just waiting.
The place that's going to come.
It's going to be a thing.
Okay.
So I'm going to come.
That's all he said.
And I said, okay, can I see him?
Right now, I don't even know where he's at.
So we're going to find out.
Do you have your idea on you?
Sure.
It's okay.
I understand.
You just get woke up?
Okay.
This is a girlfriend.
She was called and informed that he had to use his gun in self-defense.
How'd you get here?
Got you.
If you're not saying the indication was the hot double doors,
drive the motion and...
Do you want to wait in your car?
It's cold out here, so...
I can't hear the alarm going off from the other side.
I don't even know where he is right now, so...
Do you want to wait?
But do you want to wait with us?
Yeah.
Yeah.
Um...
We'll have you sitting in the back.
You don't have any weapons on you.
You need to make sure we don't have any weapons on you.
Yeah.
Yeah, we'll just check your back.
You don't go to that door.
Um, there's all the way.
I'm just showing up to your waistband.
I know you're probably energetic in here.
Here.
And here?
Yeah.
pocket too excellent you can sit on down it's a little warmer and you're going to do it out there so
you're welcome some time passes but the girlfriend grows weary and requests an update
is there you're just talking to everyone and trying to figure it out I mean it takes
it takes some time I'm sure they'll you know somebody will come over there and talk to you
Yeah, just give him a minute.
It takes a while.
But you're okay?
No, I'm just confused.
Yeah, it's a lot. It's a lot.
As long as you're okay, you're not hurt or anything.
Yeah.
Do you know if he's okay?
You know if he's okay?
You know if he's okay?
Uh, there's a lot of ease.
I'm here for Nicholas.
Oh, okay.
Given her state of confusion,
it's likely that she isn't aware of the whole situation
or that her boyfriend was the alleged aggressor.
She expressed some concern for the victim.
The person who was shot?
Mm-hmm.
He's okay?
I'm not sure that.
They took him to the hospital.
So, you know, I know he's, they took him there a while or though.
So I'm not sure what his status is.
Yeah.
At this point, the deputy is right.
The victim was taken to the Orlando Regional Medical Center by EMTs, but the police report
indicates upon arrival at the hospital at 7.4 a.m.
That driver.
30-year-old David Alexander Sly was declared dead.
Almost immediately, he was taken to the medical examiner's office where an autopsy was conducted.
The autopsy revealed that David's death was a homicide caused by a gunshot wound to the head.
Later, we learned that Carasquillo made another panicked phone call after the shooting.
I guess shot somebody.
I don't know, I know.
I was saying a son shot somebody?
Yeah, but I know that's not.
That's not, you know, he would call me screaming, crying,
the guy cut him off and started rushing towards him
and everything on the road.
So, that's why it's not like him, you know, this is a good kid, you know.
He was going to work this morning and, you know, veterans.
He came from the Army, you know,
the Gladys Place, everything, so I don't give, but he's not,
he's always a calm one, you know.
He's all of my nephews, he's, like, they look up to my son,
He's always talking to him, so I don't know what's going on.
I'm right about there.
I'm sure someone will come over and talk to him a little bit.
Where does your son work at?
He works with me.
Oh, okay.
And his girlfriend, where was she was with him?
Where was she going?
Does she work with you as well?
No, she should have her, she never came in her, she didn't have her.
Everett's a primary.
the black kia. Oh, okay. I thought someone.
Okay.
Okay. I thought I want to know for a...
Before I can get to his business.
I'm not sure.
It's not as far as the tent world is.
We're walking on a garage.
Okay.
And I was going home to work and that's when I got home.
Before leaving the scene, body-worn cameras capture a very real but very brief exchange between
two deputies.
It's not what we used to release, the game shooting is a good robbery.
Yeah, yeah.
But you know what, this road race is getting so common.
And I've seen them all over the news.
I see them.
You realize like eight out of ten people driving?
Mm-hmm.
Do you want to have to for it?
The first time we catch a glimpse of the shooter is when he arrives at the Orlando
Police Department and he's wearing work attire from the shift that he never made
too.
Just hear what's going to happen right now.
We're going to switch handcuffs since he's a deputy who are those officers.
And then we're going to bring you up to one of our rooms and then we'll get you out of these
as soon as possible, okay?
Okay?
Where we'll either source or wall.
Hold on button, actually.
A little bit.
A few minutes.
Now it's going.
I don't know.
I don't know.
I don't know.
I'm sorry.
All right.
All right.
Thanks, man. I appreciate you.
Yeah, no problem getting in this week.
Yeah, no, lots of people.
It's a huge reference.
Thanks again, man. Appreciate it.
We're going to be.
I'm going to be able to be.
There.
Once we get you all situated, we'll take your handcuffs, okay?
Yes, ma'am.
That we're not uncomfortable.
Do you want any water or anything?
Snacks, have you eaten this morning?
No.
You good?
I'm okay.
All right, huh?
So we'll get you in there.
We'll get you out of the cuffs.
We'll come check out of your minute or so, and see if you can change your mind if you want anything to eat or drink.
We got you.
We got you.
Investigators leave Keraskio in the interrogation room where he sits alone in his thoughts.
He spends about an hour alone in that room.
Here, sweet, just in case you decide to look something, okay?
If you want anything else, just let us know.
In the interrogation room, Carasquio, he didn't hold back,
telling Detective Price exactly what happened.
According to the affidavit,
Caraschio said the vehicle came from the far right lane
and switched in front of him,
causing him to apply his brakes a little harder.
After Carasquio honked his horn and flashed his headlights,
the driver of the white vehicle put down his window and said something to him.
Keroskio couldn't hear what he was saying and open his driver's door because his window doesn't go
down. He began exchanging words with the driver of the white vehicle. The traffic light turned green
and traffic started moving, but the white vehicle, it did not. So Keroskio reached into his glove box
and retrieved his firearm, which is a 45 caliber semi-automatic. Keroskeo advised he kept his right foot
on the brake, put his left foot on the pavement, and stood outside of the vehicle with his
firearm in his right hand. He pointed the firearm at the driver of the white vehicle and told him
to get out of the road and drive. The driver of the white vehicle didn't move, so Caraschio then
chambered around and pointed the firearm at the ground next to the white vehicle. Caraschio fired one
round into the roadway. Several seconds later, he fired more shots at the driver of the white vehicle.
Caraschio advised his intent was to maim the driver because he wasn't moving.
Carraschio admits he never saw a weapon in David's hands or that he ever exited that vehicle.
There were only words exchanged between the two, but Carasquio describes that he felt trapped
and the only way out was by picking up that 45 caliber semi-automatic and shooting.
Based on Carasquio's admissions, officers believe there is enough probable cause to charge him
first-degree murder.
Hey, we're running a roll, okay?
It just took a little while.
It's fine.
I took a while.
I was knocking for a while earlier.
I did be in the water bottles.
Okay, so where'd they go?
All right, just grab them.
Great time.
So while you've been in here, I've been writing a report
I submitted to the judge.
The judge has signed and approved a murder in the first decree of Restborn.
So you are currently being in charge with the first three murder with the firearm.
Okay?
That's what you are currently in the state as of right now.
Keroskio maintained that he shot 30-year-old David Alexander Sly in an act of self-defense.
His charges were later amended to second-degree murder and shooting into an occupied vehicle,
According to an online obituary, those closest to the victim called him Alex.
He was a certified forklift operator, but at the time before his death, he had just entered the hospitality industry working for several food service companies.
Alex was actually on his way to his first day in a full-time role at a job when he was shot and killed.
Alex loved music, Earth Day concerts, car races, a good steak, expensive sneakers, and most of all, his family.
He leaves behind a wife and a son.
His wife wrote online.
My first memory of David was unforgettable.
He came into the Merritt Island Taco Bell for a job interview.
His smile caught my attention immediately, and he was so polite, impressed me with
pushing in his chair from the table he sat at when he was interviewing with my boss.
He was the best thing that ever happened to me.
He was so loving with my older sons.
It only made sense after we found out we were pregnant that it would be a boy.
He loved all of our sons unconditionally.
I'm so thankful for having the chance at having the time of my life with my soulmate.
The case went to trial in March of this year and a jury convicted Carasquio of both charges.
He was sentenced to 50 years for the murder charge and 15 years for shooting at an occupied vehicle.
A judge ordered the sentences to run concurrently, meaning at the same time, not back to back.
Carasquio is appealing his sentence.
And that's it for this episode of Crime Fix.
I'm Janette Levy. Thanks so much for being with me. I'll see you back here next time.
