Brian Koberger on video at Costco, just hours after he murdered four University of Idaho students. It's just one of several new pieces of video that we're seeing from the Moscow Police Department. I'll go through them and tell you what they show. Welcome to Crime Fix. I'm Anjanette Levy. Brian Coburger, of course, is just two months into his time at Idaho's maximum security institution where he's serving four consecutive life sentences. He's admitted to murdering Maddie Mogan, Kayla Gonsalvis, Zana Kronodal, and Ethan Chapin at the House on King Road on November 13, 2022. That date changed Moscow forever, and it shatter. the lives of four families, Maddies, Kayle's, Zanas, and Ethan's. Those four young people died for absolutely no reason at all. As Moscow police investigated and identified Brian Coburger as a suspect,
Starting point is 00:01:14 they traced his movements that day as best they could, and they found a lot of videos of him and, of course, photos. I've already shown you the countless selfies, but the one from that day, The infamous Thumbs Up in the bathroom mirror selfie is just creepy knowing what we know now. It's frightening. Brian Koberger's hands are red, likely from scrubbing them, and he has a Band-Aid on one finger. Later that morning, it was 12.34 p.m. on November 13, 22, when Brian Koberger, wearing the same clothes he wore in the thumbs-up bathroom selfie, walked into Costco in Clarkston, Washington with a bottled drink in his hand. He met a clerk who was standing at the door because at Costco you, of course, have to show your membership to get in.
Starting point is 00:02:00 You can't shop there unless you're a member. We don't know exactly what he's saying to the woman or what he was hoping to shop for, but Brian Koberger was in the market for something that day. He is in the store for less than a minute because he can't shop there. He's not a member. He leaves. At 12.36 p.m., you can see Koeberger's White Alantra pull out of the Costco lot. 10 minutes later at 1246 p.m., Coburgers' White Alantra pull out of the Costco lot. 10 minutes later at 1246 p.m.
Starting point is 00:02:23 Coburger's white elantra pulls into the Albertson's grocery store and it parks. Three minutes later at 1249 p.m. If you look toward the top of your screen, you can see that Coburger is walking through the parking lot and toward the store from his car, which appears to be in the middle of the lot. He walks down the sidewalk for a short time and then into the store. Koberger enters the store and walks toward the aisles at 1249 p.m. He's there looking for something.
Starting point is 00:02:51 Coburger isn't in the store all that long because at 1256 he goes to the self-checkout and remember by this time he started paying for everything in cash according to court documents he's no longer using a debit or credit card why we don't know no one has ever said why maybe he just didn't want to be tracked after this Brian Coburger's phone it goes off the network again from 536 p.m to 8.30 that night his phone does not report to a cell tower in a similar way to the way it wasn't reporting to a tower at the time of the murders. We know at that time that his phone was definitely off. So I want to bring in someone to discuss what we've been watching and what else you're going to see. He is Gray Hughes of the Gray Hughes Investigates YouTube channel. So Gray, you got a hold of these videos. I want to know your thoughts on, first of all, Brian Coburger, you know, what's so weird to me about these videos and what creeps me out and now has me wanting to like look over my shoulder at everybody I pass is the fact that Brian Coburger has now admitted to murdering in cold blood
Starting point is 00:04:03 for college kids and he goes home apparently and showers and scrubs up his hands and takes a thumbs up selfie and then just kind of sachets around Costco and Albertsons and like nothing ever happened. Yeah, I think that's kind of the thing that everybody is noticing is how casual he is. And he knows that inside of a house, and, you know, interestingly, they hadn't even gone into, I think, about the time he's over at Albertsons, it's like when the 911 call and people are showing up. So it's sort of weird to just sort of envision back, all the way back in Moscow, Idaho, that there's bodies that haven't even been discovered yet, And he's out there just, like you said, sashing around, just for, you know, buying coffee and looking totally like somewhat like a normal person, although we look at him differently because we know what he did.
Starting point is 00:04:59 You know what I mean? Think you've seen it all. Think again. 50 ways to catch a killer brings you real cases where detectives had to flip the script to take down cold-blooded killers. Hosted by 50 Cent, this isn't your typical crime show. It's a high-stakes twist-filled ride into the. the minds of investigators who think outside the badge to break the case. Starting point is 00:05:26 again. Watch 50 Ways to Catch a Killer with 50 Cent exclusively on Fox Nation. Right. I mean, we look at it differently now, but if we had been in Costco that day, if we had been in Albertson's, we would have thought nothing, nothing about him except just we, he would have just, he would have just, been nondescript, not noticeable. The lady at Costco, I'm sure, maybe barely remembered him, except you don't really go to Costco unless you have the membership. You know that, you know, you go to Costco only if you can get in. And I'm sure the lady was like, oh, you have to have a membership and you have to pay and da-da-da-da-da. So he turns around and walks out. but I just to me I'm like wow it just shows an ability to either compartmentalize or just a coldness that I
Starting point is 00:06:23 an iciness I guess you know I'm sure his defense attorneys don't like it when I would say something like this but it's the truth you have now admitted to hours earlier stabbing to death four college kids and taking off and literally you're just walking around in your Nike's and in your nice little dress shirt shopping i don't i am just horrified kind of by this and it's just it just kind of highlights that evil can walk among us i mean at this point it doesn't really matter if the defense attorneys or they were just playing the game i mean hey this is my first client i've ever had that I really believed in his innocence, they always say. But that's just garbage. Yeah, but they put out a statement saying, you know, oh, we're still representing his rights.
Starting point is 00:07:15 I mean, he still has rights and everything like that. I get that. But you know what I mean? Like, they don't want to talk publicly about this. I'm sure maybe one day they'll write a book or something. Maybe they've got some documentary going. I have no idea. But you know what I mean? Like, yes, I think that he was probably a very difficult client for them to deal with. I actually have the feeling that they've been working on trying to get him to plead guilty for a long time. And they just kind of went through the motions and then finally had their last ditch efforts. And those all failed. And they said, if you want to save your own life, this is your time.
Starting point is 00:07:55 And then they finally made the deal. I think there was a deal in the works with all of them, even the prosecution for a while, just sort of conversations and then it finally came through you know i'm still really angry i think bill thompson uh absolutely let you know other family members down etc by not getting the um you know some sort of a statement by coberger of what he did and then where is the the knife etc even if it's just to put on record and it doesn't matter that he he might lie at least he said something that you can put out there and at least give the family some answers to maybe part of it, whether or not it's all true or not, you know?
Starting point is 00:08:40 Very frustrating. Yeah, I think it's frustrating to a lot of people because he was allowed to walk into prison with what I call that currency. I feel like it is currency. Whether anybody else agrees with that or not, I mean, it's my opinion. So, Gray, you've gotten your hands on some other video, and it's the video we've all read about in the probable cause statement about where his vehicle was spotted, how they identified it as suspect vehicle one. We now know that's the white Hyundai Alontera. So tell me and show us what
Starting point is 00:09:14 you got. All right. Well, here we go. So this video right here is on Indian Hills Drive. And this is when it first shows up on, you know, in the probable cause document, for example, it's the first time it shows up and it drives by and then it passes two more houses right after that and it's pretty amazing that they can see the vehicle in those other shots and you'll see here in a second this one's really simple though so it drives by this is one that they use in the probable cause document that like i think 326 drives by and then right after this um you know they don't have it edited upwards like the next second later the next shot so I mean I can I can scrub it forward and get to the next one I think it's coming up right here so way up here
Starting point is 00:10:09 on the upper left-hand corner you'll see some lights moving around and that's where that is wow so I don't know if you can see up there see how there's just a little bit of light movement up there we're just slightly hitting the van just for a second and there it is right there the top of the van they know that's the car because of the timing and that house is right next door two houses over from the first one and then after this it switches over to another camera yeah this one's pretty interesting because the in this shot it's just another house over way up in the top of the screen there you'll see a light of right now that's the vehicle coming into the screen how it's lived lit up up there you'll see it and it'll come in and if you zoom in which we won't do here you can literally see the window on the elantra but it takes uh you know they just give us a block of video so i'm just showing you the whole thing right now we're at 320 there it is right there
Starting point is 00:11:15 boom you drove by right so that's all they have but they know that's the car because it's all lined up in the same time frame so then we'll just move on to the next one this is at the A&W right as it's coming on to I think it's Steiner Avenue and making its way into the area and this is at I think 328 and then I don't know if you could even see it it was pretty crazy it's like right up in the upper right-hand corner right there I see it yeah and that's the one that shows that it's absolutely missing a front license plate let me just play that it right there if you look right over here in the upper
Starting point is 00:11:55 right end corner you have if you zoom in on you can really see it's really obvious it doesn't have a front plate on that shot but we're looking at the full surveillance footage here what's amazing to me was how quickly they were able to gather all of this after getting his name off of the DNA hit from the from the FBI yeah i think they work backwards too so they see this white elantra driving around at the house and then they sort of of go backwards and then canvass the areas and then move out and i mean it's amazing they found the indian hills drive camera footage you know because that's like way far you know like a mile and a half away on a kind of a random street so let's go to the next one here and this is ridge road so this is
Starting point is 00:12:47 right when it's coming into the area so i'll show you where this is so that a and w was right here it just drove right through this intersection just then when we saw it with no front license plate and that's significant because people in pennsylvania don't have that front license plate and koberger's vehicle apparently didn't have one and then the next shot we see it's driving by right here and we're getting right near the crime scene now because the crime scene is right over here and he drives this direction goes on the taylor avenue and then goes into the area So this building has two cameras, one facing this way and one on the north side here, and they're simultaneous to each other. So I kind of, I'll just show each of them independently.
Starting point is 00:13:33 So here is the first one it's driving by. And then this camera actually picks it up as pretty crazy shot here, but here it comes. And then you can see it through the woods as it goes around a curve to then get on to Taylor Avenue and what that is is right here that's the curve so that camera is probably shooting about like this and it goes around that curve and you can't see it but then ends up turning left there and then this is the video that's already been out there in the public the Linda Lane mm-hmm 1320 Linda Lane and it drives by here I'm gonna move it forward because it doesn't come by for a while
Starting point is 00:14:20 Right around here. There it is. And there's the vehicle at 3.2948 driving by right there. And then after that it goes into the complex, I call it. You know, the 112 King Road, where the camera is. It goes into there, and we're not showing that because that's not new. Now, this is new footage here. This is the Paradise Drive.
Starting point is 00:14:47 So let's just play that again. Right here, and you can see the vehicle, and these are also simultaneous videos. So there's another video right after this that shows the exact same moment in time on the same house. So here it is right here. You can see the motion sensors, the green boxes, and there he is driving by. And then where that is on here is just for people to understand what was happening. After the vehicle would be in the complex, it would leave, drive out, come back around in these back neighborhoods and then come all the way on to Walanta Drive here and then right here is where we're seeing that it comes down
Starting point is 00:15:31 and it takes a right and drives this direction and it's this house right here that has that camera so we just saw it go like this now the next shots you'll see the car comes down and does a U-turn so it'll come down and do a U-turn up here and it's really interesting because you can see on top of the car the reflection that tells them it does a U-turn so look out for that but look how it went and look at the top of that pickup truck and watch the little light see that light going up there that's what's showing that it's you doing a U-turn and then it does it again at 348 you can actually see the car a little bit itself
Starting point is 00:16:16 and then it turns and goes up and there's the light of the U-turn going back up. It's pretty interesting. I mean, it's cool that they were able to notice those little things like that. And then at 401, remember, after seeing the DoorDash driver, the vehicle drove out of, didn't go into the complex because they, you know, Coburger saw that the DoorDash driver was there. He drove really slow right here. And then instead of going into the complex, he drove all the way around. like this, and the only time that he did that, and then he passes the house right here.
Starting point is 00:16:52 But first, this camera picks it up coming around the corner, and then it drives right in front, and it's just the absolutely perfect view of the Alantra, and that's how they were able to determine that it was a 2014 to 2000. That's how they were able to determine that it was a 2014 to 2016 vehicle. You'll see the headlights coming down here in a moment and curving right here. So you can see it in the background there. I'm not sure what my phone keeps beeping over and over again. I see it right there.
Starting point is 00:17:34 And then look at this shot right here. Watch this. Look at that. That's a clear, clear shot. I mean, it's incredible. And he's driving around. And this is his final approach into the, complex where he goes in and he kind of does the three-point turn a couple different times and then
Starting point is 00:17:51 parks and goes in and commits the homicides and then this is later so after the homicides he drives that long route home you see him the probable cause this is when he's heading back into Pullman and he drives by right here I think this is Johnson Avenue and you see him right here here's the vehicle driving by and then it's picked up on a gas station camera just over around the corner so you can even see it see right back in the upper right end corner that camera picks him up and you can see it see way back in the upper right it's driving turning and it's about to turn right and then go on to Johnson Avenue and this one is amazing because this shot here shows that
Starting point is 00:18:41 it's missing a plate again watch this look at that I mean that's when you zoom in on that you can really see that does not have a front plate so now we see a minimum of two times where it does not have a front license plate and that would really indicate that yes that would you know a trial it would have been see that's the same white elantra his cell phone matches it moving here it does not have a front license plate and that matches a vehicle that was came in and we tracked it to the crime scene Yeah, it's pretty amazing. So there it goes, and there's one more piece of surveillance here. And this is that same gas station that's going to drive by right there on the right. And amazingly, you can see this. Now watch, see that green light in the upper right-hand corner? That was green, but that's actually for the highway.
Starting point is 00:19:35 So he's pulling up to a red light, but then it switches right on him here. So his light's going to turn green. And I think you can literally see his vehicle, see the lights go through that intersection right there, the headlights are turning, and then it goes around. That's amazing. I mean, you can see the entire thing. And then that's what heads to going back into campus
Starting point is 00:19:58 where he lives. So there you go. So at trial, I think they had this all chopped up, ready to go. This is what they were going to lay out for the jury. They were going to have somebody testify to this and show the cell phone stuff along with the car yeah yeah they would have put this all together i think that's that's why it's so devastating it's like they track him come into town a vehicle a
Starting point is 00:20:24 wide of launcher missing a front license plate that you see on the a and w then sequential cameras pick it up and then you see it go into the complex and they keep tracking the vehicle around and then the homicides you know he the white elantra actually parks it about 408 and then between 408 and 420 I think it's more like 413 to 418 is when he goes into the house and he kills all four victims then he you know exits at you know let's just say 418 he's exiting the house and by 420 and 47 seconds he's leaving at a high rate of speed and then he turns his phone on near Blaine and they track his cell phone and then that matches up with the white elantra as it's pulling back into
Starting point is 00:21:10 Pullman and it's also missing the front plate again. So, I mean, then his DNA is found on the knife sheath that was on Madison Mogan's bed with Kayla Gonzalez. So it's just very, very damning. I mean, he had no, he had no shot. That's why his attorney probably said, you're probably going to get the death penalty here. You know, it would just depend on one holdout or something on the jury, maybe not giving it to him, you know. Well, Gray, we appreciate you coming on and walking us through that video, as always, I appreciate it. Well, thanks for having me. And these are just some of the videos that Moscow police have released.
Starting point is 00:21:48 There could be many more coming out. So stay tuned. And that's it for this episode of Crime Fix. I'm Janette Levy. Thanks so much for being with me. I'll see you back here next time.
