The way she tells it, you are a lot more involved in what you're telling me here.
I'm a lot more involved? How would I be a lot more involved?
A woman details her part in the most sadistic crime ever prosecuted in one Indiana county.
And I just seen this like crazy animal looking at us. And I mean, it's crazy.
I take a closer look at the case of Heidi Carter, her confession, and the horrific crime that landed her in prison.
Welcome to Crime Fix. I'm Ann Jeanette Levy.
This case out of Indiana sounds like
something out of a horror movie. It started with a meetup on a dating app and ended with a couple
being tortured, a man being murdered, and police in Evansville, Indiana killing a man who they
believed was armed. Heidi Carter is serving a 65-year prison sentence for her role in all of
this, and she's on video in a
police interview room talking about her role in this night that left two men dead and a woman
scarred for the rest of her life. A jury in Vanderburg County found Carter guilty of three
charges, aiding, inducing, or causing murder, aiding, inducing, or causing rape, and criminal
confinement. Authorities had evidence that
Carter's fiance, Carrie Hammond, was the person who actually strangled and assaulted the two victims.
Together, though, police say Heidi Carter and Carrie Hammond restrained a man and a woman in
chairs with duct tape at this house in Evansville and beat and tortured them for hours until Carrie
eventually choked the man to death with a belt.
That man who was killed was named Tim Ivey. He was 50 years old. Now Carter had placed an ad
on a dating app looking for a woman to join her and Carrie Hammond for a threesome. Documents
affirming Carter's conviction state, in June 2021, Carter sent a social media message to a friend and told the
friend that she and Hammond wanted a pet, which she explained was a submissive little
Carter and Hammond could have any time all the time and do what we want. Then in July,
Carter sent another message to a friend stating she was a sociopath who liked righteous violence. Then in August, Carter sent another
message that said, I want a pet. When I'm done using and abusing her, then sell her or dispose
of her. The documents are really, really graphic. And they described Carrie Hammond walking in on
Carter, Tim Ivey, and his girlfriend in the middle of a threesome. And then the horror begins. Police were called to
the house that October in 2021 after a woman named Cynthia, who Heidi Carter had asked to
clean her house, ran away from the home in terror after seeing Tim Ivey's body.
She found an off-duty police officer in the neighborhood. We know. Police walk through the house to clear it.
That's standard procedure.
They found dogs.
Rebecca, what's your name?
Somebody.
Somebody stay with him.
What's your name?
Stay with me.
Okay, I got you.
Hey, you got any weapons?
The surviving female victim was hiding under blankets in a bed.
Officers also found Heidi Carter.
The neighbor said that she saw her and a guy just coming and going from the van all night long.
So who's the guy in there? Carrie Hammonds. That's your boyfriend? No, he's my ex-fiancé.
Okay, same difference. Okay. There was another girl named Amanda and her boyfriend,
and Carrie killed Amanda's boyfriend in the house. What's she saying?
He said it was Barry Hammonds. Were boyfriend in the house. What's she saying? He said with his bare hands.
Wait, were you in here or did you just get here?
No, I...
You just brought her here, didn't you?
That was earlier, okay?
And when I was gone, that's when he had done it.
And then...
There's somebody dead in the house.
Yes.
Yes.
Yes.
This is exactly the kind of case where it gets me thinking about how important it is to really
know about the people that you're going to hang out with. I searched Heidi Carter's name on
truthfinder.com to see what would come up. The murder case out of Indiana did not appear,
but an older case where she was accused of resisting arrest did. Truthfinder is really
great because it will show you things like a person's past and current addresses, phone numbers,
social media accounts, and of course, those criminal and traffic records. If you want to

Heidi was blaming her fiancé, Kerry Hammond, at the scene.
She was arrested and taken to the police station.
And right off the bat, she throws Kerry Hammond under the bus again.
Yeah, that's my fiancé.
I'm trying to leave him, but he, like I said, he raped me a couple times today.
Who's your fiancé?
Carrie Hammond.
Carrie?
Mm-hmm. I've been trying to get away from him, and I...
Had that in your pocket?
I can't even think. I'm sorry. Anyways, he killed him.
Okay.
He kept wanting to show his body.
Who?
Carrie did.
Here, that's your boyfriend.
No, no, he's my fiance.
Okay, your fiance.
The detectives want to know more about the relationship between Heidi Carter and Carrie Hammond.
He asks some follow-up questions.
Just since I moved here, I've known him since, I don't know, say, maybe March or something.
This year?
Yeah, just talking to him through Facebook.
Right, and when did you and he, like, hook up and start dating?
When I moved out of here.
Which was when, August?
July.
July.
Oh, yeah, because you were staying somewhere else in August is when you moved to Stinson.
Yeah.
Right, okay. So you and Carrie have been dating since July?
Yeah.
Okay.
Now, he's been in, like, work release type things, right?
Mm-hmm.
Okay.
How long has he been doing that?
I'd say, oh, my gosh, since January, I think.
Okay. So the whole time you two have been dating, he's been, since January, I think.
Okay.
So the whole time you two have been dating, he's been at the safe house?
Okay. Okay.
Okay.
Do you know what he was in trouble for that ended up in the safe house?
I think a syringe or something.
Oh, yeah.
Something drug related.
Right.
Okay.
Okay. Okay, so you moved in with Jason in August.
Now, according to Heidi, Carrie was not faithful during their relationship.
At one point, she claims that he encouraged her to sign up on dating sites to find other romantic partners.
What do you mean by him encouraging you and what would happen?
It was prompting because I would have never done it.
I've never been on a dating site.
It's just not something I would have done.
Because before the dating site, he pushed me to just randomly find a woman that we could hook up with.
That's not my thing either. Did you do stuff like that too? to just randomly find a woman that we could hook up with. Right.
You know?
That's not my thing either.
Did you do stuff like that too, or was it all due to dating sites?
No.
When I would be with them, he would make a comment,
and I would say something.
I mean, I wouldn't just, like, it's not like a,
I mean, there would be a couple times that I would try to, I guess,
hate on somebody.
I would just make a joke or something.
I don't know.
But the dating site, what was your question?
I'm sorry.
You're going to get another one.
Oh, that's okay.
Would it lead into sexual relationships with other people?
Like you and him and other women, other men?
Like what would you guys do?
Me, him, and another woman.
Okay.
But he was going behind my back of the head, picking up hookers and stuff too.
And, like, I didn't know that, but I just found that out.
In terms of you and him and other women, how often was that stuff going on?
That happened twice before, and that was through, let me see, okay, the first one was Danny,
then there was Kelly, and then...
We're not using the surviving victim's name since she is a survivor of sexual assault.
What was it that you met her on?
A cane or something.
So then I told him, he gets out of the safe house, I pick him up,
explaining he's wanting that to happen.
Well, she has a boyfriend, okay, and she said that their schedules collide or clash or something like that,
and there was only a certain time she was basically going to go behind his back.
Well, then it came to that she was trying to come over while Carrie's at work in the third shift,
and she was wanting to come over and have her boyfriend come with.
I told Carrie, and he said no.
And I definitely, like, if he would have told me to do that, then I think he's just, I don't know,
probably would have, like, with another man, like, if he wanted another man there.
Because I really didn't want him to be with another woman, you know.
But anyway, so that didn't happen.
Well, then then fast forward,
that was like a few days ago or something. Fast forward, I was still a little bit in contact,
but she said something about coming over. Tim Ivey and his girlfriend went to Heidi's house that night to hook up. They discussed this on the app along with boundaries and things like
that. Heidi admits the three of them drank alcohol and used methamphetamine.
They watched pornography and a snuff film.
Then Carrie arrived, and he was furious.
Were you guys in the middle of doing your sexual stuff
when Carrie came in?
Yeah.
Okay, and he got pissed off?
Yeah.
What did he do then?
Well, like I said, he started, he hit him, he hit her,
and he, then he.
And you said hit, was this hands, fists?
He was using different things.
Weapons?
Yeah.
I mean, what?
I can't remember.
I just remember seeing his face.
It was just like, and it was.
Whose face?
Terry's. Okay. Did you ever do anything to try just like, and it was. His face. Terrible.
Okay.
Did you ever do anything to try and stop him when he was hitting them with the bomb stuff?
Yes.
Yes.
I have, when he, the whole entire time.
Like, and he knew, and he was using, he was using my fear, not one of his own. The woman or the girl, Cindy, the short one that was...
Okay.
Was there later?
Yeah, because I was just trying to protect him.
He attacked somebody else in the past.
I went to pick him up from work.
This 20-year-old kid was riding with me.
My son is 18.
And we pulled out that dirty on camera broad day like,
Carrie comes, rips the door open and starts beating on us.
And I put my body, I was yelling at him, I said stop this fucking kid.
And I put my body in between him and the kid, you know like,
so it isn't to the best of my ability yet.
Right.
Oh God. It isn't to the best of my ability yet. Right. Oh, Lord.
Christ, so what happened after, you know, he hits them with the bat a few times?
He's just really clipping out.
Like, he's got this crazy, raged look.
And it's, I feel like it was,
I mean, this is in the morning time.
And I'm trying to just calm him down, you know,
just, and he ties them.
I don't know why I can't.
Heidi minimizes her actions.
She tells the detectives she feared Kerry.
Because he was very violent. I mean, I've caught that 20 times. minimizes her actions. She tells the detectives she feared Kerry. Like I said, I was trying to keep him calm, you know. Like, I didn't want things to get worse with those two,
and I didn't want to be in their position either.
Right.
So he wanted to have sex, and I let him have sex with me.
Like, he didn't break me then, but...
Right.
Yeah, and he...
He was...
Throughout this, because like I, as time went on I got more comfortable
with standing up to him and stuff, um, but uh, throughout it he said this is, this is
my fault, this is my doing, okay?
Or no, maybe it wasn't throughout that, um, I think it was after he killed that guy.
Okay.
Um, and he was blaming it on me.
You said earlier something about his bare hands?
Yeah.
So what did he tell you?
He didn't go into detail, okay?
Well, that's a detail right there.
Well, that is a detail, but he said with his bare hands.
And I knew he had blood all over his pants.
Like, there was blood everywhere, okay?
And he was in the middle of cleaning it up.
It was like a s*** bed bath.
And when it was just her and I, I asked how, I said, did you watch what happened?
And she said, yeah.
I said, why didn't you close your eyes?
What did she say happened?
She said something about him beating him and then something about, like, strangling him with something.
The detective clarifies and tries to get Heidi to say why she helped move
Tim Ivey's body. Do you have a gun? No. I had a gun when they picked me up. Okay, Terry,
when I was out at the van, okay, because I kept dragging him, he tried to, okay, and I stopped that, and I, you know, protected her, and we were
trying to get away, okay, at this point, Tim's body is racked up, and it's got stuff on it,
like, right there in my dining room, you know, my dog was laying on top, like, all this,
Terry sits on it like it's a fucking couch, and he kept making threats that he was going to show me,
and the shorter girl, Cynthia, anyways,
He's making threats to do what?
To show us his body.
Okay.
I mean, I had seen him dragged and pulled.
Oh, my God.
Did you help him move the body out of the room?
No, I was there when he did it.
Right.
I was in the bedroom.
When his body was there, like it just stayed in there.
I had to walk past it.
I've never had to deal with something like that.
Did you help him move it?
No.
Are you sure?
I'm sure.
Okay.
Now, detectives had already interviewed the female surviving victim while she was at the
hospital, so they have her account of what happened, and the detective interviewing Heidi decides to confront her.
So there's some things that she told me.
Spent some time with her at the hospital.
There's some things she told me that don't exactly line up with what you're telling me.
About what?
About what went down in the house after Carrie came in.
Okay.
Okay.
Like, you helped restrain her.
You helped tape up Tim.
You encouraged him while he was raping her.
I encouraged him?
Yes.
Okay. You had a gun in your hand
in that bedroom
threatening both
and Tim.
You told them that you
knew people in Indianapolis
that knew how to get rid of bodies and that you
guys were going to kill them both
and get rid of them. She saw
a gun in your hand.
You helped you did help move Tim's body from one room to the other i acted like i was going to this is after he had sex with me okay and i i that's why
i don't have paintings on okay um i said i acted like i was going to okay what about the other
stuff i mean her saying that you helped tie them up, that you helped restrain them.
And that I encouraged him to rape her.
I said, I didn't rape him myself.
That you had the gun in that room and made threats to both of them to kill them both.
And you prevented them from leaving.
Yeah, I mean, you were a lot more involved in what you're telling me here.
I'm a lot more involved?
How would I be a lot more involved?
What happened in the room?
I knew that he was going to come in and do this?
Maybe not that, but that you were involved in holding them captive and restraining them
and being a party to all of this stuff that happened in the room
and making these threats and having the gun in the room.
I said that I was going to take her up because I'm acting like I'm with him, okay?
Like I'm not, I wouldn't stop him and they acted like I was going to do it, okay? Okay And I, like, they act like I was going to do it, okay?
Okay, when you say you did act like you were going to do it.
Because I told him that I would tell her.
Because after he raped her, okay?
The detective continues with this strategy, confronting Heidi with information that he received from the victim,
who told him that Heidi was in control of Carrie, ordering him to rape her.
But you physically, like, acted like you were going ordering him to do it. I didn't want him to, you know, to hurt.
But then it's like, you know, what if that's the, it's like, I just couldn't do it.
I couldn't, you know.
Did you have the gun in that room?
No.
Why would she say that you do?
I have no clue.
That whole situation, even without a gun, was intense enough, okay?
Yeah. Yeah, so, but if I had the gun at any point, I would tell you. I'm sitting here being straight up with you about enough, okay? Yeah, yeah. Yeah, so, but, um, and if I had the gun
at any point,
I would tell you.
I'm sitting here
being straight up with you
about everything, okay?
I'm telling you how, um,
and, oh, my God.
Did it, she...
What does it benefit her
to make this stuff up, though?
You know what I mean?
She just got beaten
and raped
and watched her boyfriend get murdered
all in front of her today.
I know.
So why would she just make stuff up about you
if it didn't actually happen?
So what is she saying?
She's saying that you helped him.
That I helped him?
Yes.
No, I didn't help him.
But you helped him.
No, I didn't.
But I restrained her.
Yeah.
Okay, now, the threats, like I said, when I was trying to put the redirected or whatever from her to him,
I did do, okay?
Then the detective offers a scenario to Heidi to see how she'll react. Did you in any way have him over there to have sex with them knowing that Carrie was going to come in and catch you guys?
No.
Like to piss him off?
No, no, no, no.
If you guys have been fighting or whatever, was it a thing to just make him mad?
No.
Now remember, the reason police were called to the home in the first place, that woman Cynthia, who was cleaning the house, she saw Tim Ivey's body and she ran for help. Just after 11 p.m., Evansville police arrived on scene
and they noticed that Carrie had stepped out of the front door, clutching what appeared to be a
gun. Body-worn cameras capture the events. Officers continued to yell commands at another male that
they could see just inside the doorway. After officers gave numerous loud verbal commands, the male disregarded their commands and rushed
out of the front door in an aggressive manner. He was holding an object in his hand that he pointed
at officers. Officers believed this object was a gun and several officers fired at the suspect
to stop the perceived threat.
We're now going to show body camera footage from one of the officers who was
on the scene.
Keep in mind this is not as close as the dash cam.
It's a little further away, but the audio is going to be way better on now. Hands up. Come out now!
Hands up! Watch out now!
Come out of the house! Come out now!
Come out now! Get out of the house!
Hands up!
Get out here now!
You've got to reach down there again!
Turn the house around!
...right and then just upstairs.
Everybody make sure you've got a good cover.
Get on the ground! Put your hands up!
Alright, just roll in that bearcat and bring it straight down the stairs.
All right, clear. All set. I'm sitting in the front row anyway.
Get into the front row now! Put your hands up!
Get into the front row now!
Put your hands up! Officer shot and killed Kerry Hammond, believing he had a gun.
Heidi was not aware of this, so toward the end of the interrogation...
Where were you when you heard the gunshots?
Where was I?
Yeah.
Are you talking about when after the cops did?
Right. When you heard our gunshots.
I was on the curb.
Okay. Did you see what happened?
No.
No?
No, but can you tell me?
Or should I not be able to handle it?
I mean, we ended up having to shoot Kerry
because he had something that looked like a gun in his hand.
You killed him?
Mm-hmm.
Yeah, our officers did.
Okay.
That's...
He came out and had what looked like a gun in his hand
and wouldn't put it down, so.
Um, I'm, honestly, I was thinking about killing him myself, like, and that was a f***ing thing for me to have to.
And, um, he, like, I think my roommate had a.22 that he used, that he,
that he was working to keep me safe.
Police later confirmed the item in Carrie's hand was a piece of metal or
plastic twisted into the shape of a firearm.
Once officers were able to determine that the suspect was no longer a threat,
they moved him behind cover to render aid and
allowed other officers to safely clear the home.
The suspect was pronounced dead on scene.
Once officers cleared the home, the two juveniles were located upstairs and were unharmed.
They were safely taken out of the home.
Officers located an adult female victim who had been tied up, shackled, and had visible
injuries.
She was taken to a local hospital for treatment detectives obtained a signed search warrant for the
home another individual was located inside the residence but unfortunately
was deceased and beyond help the manner of death appeared suspicious and gruesome
he had been restrained duct-taped beaten and strangled it was incredibly gruesome. He had been restrained, duct taped, beaten and strangled.
It was incredibly gruesome.
What about did he do anything?
You saw everything he did. You were there for the majority of it.
I was there for the majority of it. Not all of it. When I come back, he had a pair of
like a fishnet stuff wrapped around her neck and yeah I don't know everything and you know what everything that you say you say that like I bet
I enjoyed it you don't understand that I gotta live the rest of my life knowing and seeing him
and seeing him
been through some shit in my life okay I would never say that you wanted any of this to happen
but you were a part of it I was a part of it yeah I mean you could say that you wanted any of this to happen, but you were a part of it. I was a part of it?
Yeah.
I mean, you could say that I was because if I was really a part of it, it would not have been like that.
If you really didn't want to be a part of it, you would have done more to stop it.
You left that.
You were gone.
You could have done more.
Do you know what I was... But instead, you helped tie them gone. You could have done more. Do you know what I've...
But instead, you helped tie them up. You helped hold them down.
I didn't help hold them down. I did not help...
You watched and encouraged him to rape her.
I did not encourage him to rape her.
You certainly did what you were done. You did a lot of...
I learned it. Can we cope with this situation or manipulate the situation with him or something or getting something else?
Like, it's a whole lot of thinking that I was having, like, just acting.
Maybe I didn't make the best decisions, but I never wanted no part of that.
Never.
Okay?
I mean, I shouldn't have been getting high and drinking.
I should not have been running a hook. No, I shouldn't have been getting high and drinking. I should not have been running a hook.
No, I shouldn't have been.
Okay?
I shouldn't have let him touch me.
I don't recall that part.
Did it happen?
Yes.
Heidi Carter is serving that 65-year sentence.
Her first trial actually ended in a mistrial.
She was convicted of all charges in her second trial.
Cameras aren't allowed in court in Indiana.
She had told the court, yes, I was living in sin, but did I commit any crimes?
No.
And that's it for this episode of Crime Fix.
I'm Ann Janette Levy.
Thanks so much for being with me.
I'll see you back here next time.
