I'm going to walk you to the ambulance.
That story in Ray, after police say he rolled an SUV he'd stolen from an older couple,
after stabbing the driver at a rest stop.
He moved the car.
And I looked over and he was like in the grass and there was blood all over. couple after stabbing the driver at a rest stop. I have this heartbreaking story out of New Mexico
and how a police officer may have nearly missed the attack.
Ask him something.
About what?
Honestly, dude, I think he was in a bathroom stall this morning while I was peeing in there
at 7 a.m.
Welcome to Crime Fix. I'm Anjanette Levy.
On April 14th, David Adams and his wife were driving through New Mexico. They were retired and moving from Colorado to Arizona, so their car was packed full of their stuff. The couple
had pulled over at a rest stop to use the restroom in Colfax County that's northeast of Santa Fe.
Adams's wife described what happened when she walked out of the restroom.
Do you have your license or anything on you?
It's all in the car. It's all in the car?
Okay.
He would have his wallet in his pocket,
but we pulled up to use the bathroom.
Uh-huh.
And I went in and he,
that's always done before I am,
and I came out and he was laying on the grass.
I came out and I looked over here and I thought,
well, he moved the car. Uh-huh. And I looked over and he was laying on the grass. I came out and I looked over here and I thought, well, he moved the car. And I looked over and he was laying on the grass and there was
blood all over and the car was gone. Okay. And it was, it's his chest, it's really bad.
Okay. And the car is full of things. We're moving. And there's a couple computers in there. There's a printer in there. There's all kinds of bins. And they kept asking me if there was a gun in there.
My father-in-law had a World War II pistol, and that's in the wheel well. It's in a cardboard box. It would be hard for them to know that it was there unless it just sit in the car.
Can you imagine coming out of a restroom and finding your husband wounded like that?
One officer in particular was really surprised that this stabbing happened at the rest stop
there in Colfax County for one particular reason. Okay, when did this happen? I was here this
morning. Really? That officer had been there at that rest stop
a short time before this happened. And a maintenance worker appeared to have been
there earlier in the morning before that. Someone got stabbed to death.
I just left from here. So I checked everything. Okay. Did you see anybody suspicious?
Sure. See anybody that stood out that looked violent or anything?
Not, not.
See, I just got here at 5.30 and I checked everything and yeah.
I was here at about 7.
I came in here to pee.
There was nobody.
There was a guy in the bathroom going to the bathroom, but I didn't see him.
Was he in the bathroom?
There was a guy going to the bathroom, but I did my business and left.
You just hang out by your car for a minute. They might have more questions
for you, all right? This was absolutely shocking. Another officer asked David Adams' wife about
the car they were driving. If they could track down that car, New Mexico State Police knew
they could track down the person who stabbed David Adams.
All righty. So did you get a description
of the vehicle and everything?
Well, we gave it to the 911, but it's a
BMW
X1
SUV
dark gray
Colorado
plates. Did I say
2016?
It's a small SUV, but it's a dark gray. Okay. It had both of our phones in there and my purse is in there. Okay, what's your phone number? And the phone is turned on. The officer suggested that dispatch try to ping the phone. That's technology that can be used to track a phone's location. And it goes to this chest. It's really bad. Okay. And the car is full of things. We're moving and there's a couple of computers in there. There's a printer in there. There's all kinds of
bins. And they kept asking me if there was a gun in there. My father-in-law had a World War II pistol, and that's in the wheel well.
It's in a cardboard box.
I don't think it would be hard for them to know that it was there.
It wasn't just sitting in the cold.
Okay.
Do you have a blanket or something?
If you want to go to my unit, you can come sit in the back just to stay warm, okay?
David Adams' wife is incredibly calm.
She's likely in shock, but she's also trying to figure out if medics are making any progress in treating her husband.
I'll give him a call now.
What for?
Good. It's a homicide.
Uh, is he 10-7?
Can you tell me if he's still breathing?
I'm not sure.
They're trying to work on him now, so.
I'm going to take her to my unit.
She's freezing, so.
Okay, yeah.
Can you find out if he's still breathing?
Yeah, just let him work on him and see what we can do, okay?
You could go ahead and sit back here. I'll turn the heater on for you.
Yeah, yeah, that's fine. I'm just going to turn the heater on though.
This case about the murder of David Adams
is so incredibly sad, but I'm able to tell you about it because we have sponsors here on Crime

Sadly, David Adams, as you heard, he didn't make it. Police are also,
at the same time, trying to get a good enough description of the vehicle to track it down.
Do you happen to know the license plate number to your vehicle or no?
It's a Colorado plate. Okay. Three letters and three, add space and then three numbers.
Okay. But it's, I'm guessing it's a pretty recognizable vehicle
since it's a BMW X1 and everything, right you know, the whole back end. Yeah. Okay.
Yeah.
At this point, the officers don't know if the man who attacked David Adams might still be at that rest stop.
They have to make sure that he's not, so they start moving toward the restrooms to see if the man with the knife is hiding inside.
Colt, that's the sheriff's office.
Good. Did you clear the other side? Sheriff's office.
Did you clear the other sign? Sheriff's office.
You're in here not to social yourself. That's what she said.
She said there's a handgun in their vehicle too.
Or does he have one?
No, he had a knife in his handgun.
Alright. Yeah, this is where he was stabbed.
Sheriff's office!
Clear.
Single.
The officers then check a second restroom just to be safe.
All right.
Good?
Yeah.
See, it's got it in here.
Damn.
All right. All the way down. Police have put out a bolo, a be on the lookout for the Adams's SUV.
One officer said he might have actually seen that SUV that morning. There was a car going south that matched the
description. I didn't know what the car looked like though. It's important that they have
a description of this car, but they still don't know what the driver looks like. Do
they have a description? What do you look like?
I don't know. I think he was the only one that seen him.
He was the only one? Nothing at this time. I'll call back with more details if I get them.
At some point, the officers spot the SUV and a chase begins. Every officer in the area flies to the scene. One officer pulls up and the SUV is on its side. It's rolled over many
times. The couple's BMW is absolutely mangled from the rollover crash, but the driver,
he appears to be okay. How many times did it roll over? I have no idea. I got here last.
I'm going to walk you to the ambulance.
Police say the man who stole the car is named Dorian Reyes, 21 years old,
and that he stabbed David Adams at the rest stop and then stole the car.
You wanna go on the back or you wanna go on the side door?
Yeah, I'm gonna go on the side door instead.
Wait, let me sit on this thing with me. Officers walk Ray to an ambulance to make sure that he's okay and that he doesn't have
to go to the hospital.
All right, which color bones are in?
This one?
This one.
This one probably has a bruise on it.
I know what that is.
Where you wearing your seatbelt?
Huh?
Where you wearing your seatbelt?
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Yeah?
Anything back here hurt?
To the right.
To the right?
Go up. Right, right there. Right in there? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Anything back here hurt? To the right. To the right?
Go up.
Right, right there.
Right in there?
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Anything down here?
Right there.
I don't know how it's going to work.
I'm going to kind of touch you around, okay?
All right.
No pain?
Take a deep breath for me.
No pain? No pain?
I'm going to keep touching, okay?
I can't hear anything on hips.
Are you sitting left?
Your leg hurts?
This video is likely a little blurry here because Ray is getting medical treatment.
He's in the ambulance for a little while, getting checked out by EMTs. A police report says that Dorian Ray is actually from Georgia
and that he stabbed David Adams several times and then stole the SUV. The report says that
the forerunner had been stolen from a man at 9th Point a day earlier in Aurora, Colorado.
The victim described the person as wearing an Afro-style wig.
Wigs matching that description were found at the truck stop.
It appears police believe Ray stopped at the truck stop to ditch the forerunner and steal another car.
Back to the ambulance where Ray is being checked out.
The EMTs decide he doesn't need to go to the hospital.
Instead, he's off to jail.
I got him on this side.
You want to get on that side?
Yep.
Hop up, buddy.
Watch your head, too.
Watch your head.
Got him?
Yeah.
All right.
Good job.
Want to just double check those cuffs?
Are we in a better position for it?
Good, good. You think those are tight enough?
We're good? Okay. I can get a finger in there, so...
Yep. Let's go.
Watch your six- two, two.
Mm-hmm.
Guys, traffic.
As police load Ray into the cruiser, that officer who was at the rest stop earlier had this to say after seeing Ray up close.
Did I ask him something?
About what?
Honestly, dude, I think he was in a bathroom stall this morning while I was being in there
at 7 a.m. So it's possible that that officer missed Dorian Ray and what happened to David Adams
by just moments. The Adams's SUV, as I mentioned, was mangled from the rollover crash,
but one of the officers went to the vehicle in the hopes of finding Joyce Adams's purse.
Said it was a bag. You need a picture?
Here's a purse. Good. Okay. Let me see if her phone's in there. Hopefully.
Damn, her phone's not in there.
It might have gone.
Just lodged.
There's her.
He went through it. The medication that Joyce Adams needs is also missing from the purse.
It's insulin.
Do you want to come in?
Sure.
I don't want to interrupt you guys.
Oh, that's my purse.
Yeah.
So, not to interrupt you.
But apparently my wallet and...
So...
Can I...
Oh, yeah, absolutely. I could not find a phone in your vehicle
um all the zippers were open on the purse when i when i got it
so the wallet was separate but and it was open um there was no phone. I can't have taken my phone. My life is in my phone. So the phone more than
likely is inside the vehicle, but there's so much stuff in that vehicle. While Joyce Adams was happy
to have her purse back, her life has been shattered. Her husband murdered on what should
have been a simple stop at a rest stop. I have to be able to function and he took two of my credit cards.
So unless he threw them out the window, they're on him. So as far as it being on him, from what I
understand, he didn't have anything with him. So they might be in the vehicle still. We don't know
for sure though, but we'll try our best, like I said. They would not have fallen out of here.
Dorian Ray was photographed by police and a cell phone was found in the search of the car.
Ray pleaded not guilty to charges of first degree murder, armed robbery and unlawful taking of a motor vehicle.
That's it for this episode of Crime Fix. I'm Janette Levy. Thanks so much for being with me. I'll see you back here next time.
