Daniel was just 22 years old and had his entire life ahead of him. He should still be here, but he died as the result of his injuries that he suffered during a crash last February, and that crash was caused intentionally, according to detectives in Flagler County, Florida. Flagler County is about halfway between Jacksonville and Orlando on
Starting point is 00:02:13 the east coast of Florida. Leah Mumby faces a vehicular manslaughter charge in the crash that killed Daniel Waterman. The charge was upgraded after Daniel died last month. Back on February 9th, Leah and Daniel had attended a party for the big game. It was a Sunday night. The couple left the party, and then Leah's phone appeared to call 911. The car crash and is not responding to their phone. The emergency location is, latitude 29.5815. Longitude minus 81.2364 with an estimated search radius of five meters.

Help, help, help, help, help. With an estimated search radio to five meters, this message will repeat in five seconds. I'm going to die. Hello. As deputies were dispatched to the scene, a woman can be heard screaming.
Starting point is 00:03:21 Daniel, wake out, please. Daniel, wake up, please. Hello, can you hear me? The owner of the phone was in a severe car crash and was not responding to their phone. That woman screaming is Leah Mumbie and she was pregnant. A deputy arrived and found an SUV crashed into a tree. He walked toward the vehicle and heard a woman crying. Can you copy for it to 28?
Starting point is 00:03:59 Hey, Tina. Tina. Alpha Julia, Alpha Julia. A. A.J. A.J. going to be a white Honda passport. Firefighters had their hands full.
Starting point is 00:04:14 They were doing their best to help the people inside the SUV. Where is she? She's on the first. She's on the truck. Oh, Oh! Oh! Thank you.
Starting point is 00:04:31 Oh! Ah! hallo! Ha! Ha! Oh! Oh! Oh!
Starting point is 00:04:39 Oh! Oh! Oh! Oh! Oh! Oh! All right. All right?
Starting point is 00:05:07 Where is your girl? Your girl. I don't think we need this anymore. Hey, Elena, are you there? No. No. I think we need this. Call her again.
Starting point is 00:05:27 Let's get a back for you. Let's get it back. Let's drop this. Let's drop this. We'll get it back for it. We'll get it back for it. Eleven. I didn't see it. Oh. When there, when they did the wood one, I basically drove like really slow and I'm like, up, there it is.
Starting point is 00:05:49 It's just her from what I believe. I don't know. She lost control or she was hit. While an investigation will need to be conducted into what caused the crash, helping the people inside the SUV is priority number one at this point. At first, it appears there's only a woman in the driver's seat, but then, the deputy is told there's also a passenger. I have agrival breathing no pole. Do you have one? Agrile breathing no pole from the passenger side.
Starting point is 00:06:24 You have a second rescue, Atlanta? There's a passenger. Yeah. You need nervous? No, for you. What you need? Just get her out. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:06:37 What do you got with the other patient? He has no. polls, but he's acting with me. Okay. Let's work on getting her out. You have your second rescue coming, right? No? I got... Elena, go through me on command, okay? You're good. You're good. That was a good call, though. Jump on that. The driver, of course, is Leah Mumbie, and the passenger is Daniel Waterman. The two were a couple, and at this point, the first responders, they don't know what happened before the crash. But apparently, it wasn't easy to find the crash scene.
Starting point is 00:07:09 That's how far off the road the SUV was when it hit the tree. I couldn't see it. I couldn't see it. Oh. This is a little one. I basically go really slow and I'm like, oh, here it's. How many octaves? They just heard from mine.
Starting point is 00:07:37 Gotcha. Okay? I got to talk to forward. Hmm. Go. Oh. Oh. Oh.
Starting point is 00:07:49 Oh. Oh. Oh. I'm so. In this next section of the video, you get a better view of just how far off the road. The SUV Leah Mumbi was driving traveled. Just jump to meeting with a man behind it. I'm trying to hear about my right side.
Starting point is 00:08:45 Are you going to be any of the immediate? Alright, I'm going to grab my traffic place. I got it, I got it. We're going to be able to be. We're going to be. I don't know. I think about it. I think about it.
Starting point is 00:09:25 I don't know. I think of the Okay, just say D.O.A? Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Yes, sir.
Starting point is 00:10:10 Okay. So the one in the passenger is going to be single coming? Yeah. Great. Let's go right now. Let's go right now. Hello. What's that? What's that smell?
Starting point is 00:10:54 What else you got, Joe? I heard we're calling for two heads. Did any help with that? Yeah, that's all right? Oh yeah. Yeah, that's a source of sound down. Okay. Yep.
Starting point is 00:11:52 Now, sorry. Sorry. Now it took some time, but eventually EMTs pulled Leah Mumby from the driver's seat and they loaded her into the ambulance. As the ambulance prepared to leave to take Mumbie to the hospital, Daniel Waterman, her boyfriend, remained in grave condition. Leah was at least conscious. You could hear her crying and yelling for help. She said they were arguing. They were arguing. Well, the chiefs got slaughtered today, too, so. She said she just finished drinking too today. Oh, my God. Oh, that was part of it, but.
Starting point is 00:12:52 That's us. Yeah. Track three. Alright, well I'm gonna try to knock this out, played it up before we get seven, so we don't have to be here for six hours. Give me anything from us? No, I mean, I'm just trying to find a wallet, but other than that. You want some help, sir?
Starting point is 00:13:21 Yeah, good, that'd be awesome. We're trying to find a wallet, a hurt. Can't see . Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. her purse is over here for some time but he would later awake from that coma and he claimed that Leah Mumby drove her SUV off the road intentionally after they got
Starting point is 00:14:44 into an argument. His mother told a local newspaper in Syracuse, New York, where Daniel is from, that Daniel could barely talk so he pointed to letters on a board and made sounds to communicate what had happened that night. A Florida Highway Patrol detective wrote an affidavit. On May 15th, 2025, I conducted a recorded interview with Daniel Waterman. In his interview, Daniel stated that he and Leah were in an argument due to personal issues with Leah finding out she was pregnant that day and a text message Daniel received from a female friend in New York. Daniel and Leah exchanged expletives. Daniel stated, Leah began driving recklessly. Daniel stated she slowed down to 50 miles per hour and he tried to get out of the car, but then Leah began to speed up to 80 to 90
Starting point is 00:15:32 miles an hour. Daniel stated the last thing he remembers before the crash was Leah told him, I don't care what happens, you'll get what you deserve, and swerved off the roadway, colliding with a tree, making Daniel incapacitated. The detective spoke to Leah Mumby about that. He wrote, Upon speaking with Leah, several days later, after Leah was released from the hospital, Leah claims to not know what happened prior to the crash and only remembers waking up in agonizing pain. Leah Mumby's unborn babies survived the crash, thankfully, and we would later find out that Daniel believed that the baby was his. Meanwhile, the cousins Daniel and Leah had been watching the big game with that night, Jessica and Sarah Stappenbeck told Flagler Live that Daniel and Leah left before the
Starting point is 00:16:16 end of the game. Jessica told the outlet she was the last person to speak with Leah that night before the crash, and she claimed that Leah called her twice as she was driving and was upset about Daniel being in touch with a woman in New York. Jessica claimed that Leah took Daniel's phone from him while she was driving, and that just minutes before the crash, she got a text from his phone that read, this is what he gets for being a liar and a cheater. Now, as part of the investigation into the crash investigators looked at the event data recorder for the SUV. That's basically the vehicle's black box. The FHP report states, the vehicle is moving steadily at around 93 to 95 miles per hour, three to five seconds prior to the crash. The accelerator input increases four seconds prior to the
Starting point is 00:17:03 crash. The brakes were not applied. The report then describes the impact point when the Honda collided with the tree. Speed, 52 miles an hour, accelerator pedal, 100% throttle at the time of impact, brakes, off, stability control, still engaged, steering, 175 degrees indicating a hard right turn. Flagler County prosecutors charged Leah Mumbie with reckless driving, causing serious bodily injury and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. The last time that we discussed this case, I showed you a video that Daniel's Aunt Tiffany posted on TikTok back in July.
Starting point is 00:17:42 It showed Leah Mumbie turning herself in. at the sheriff's office. She posted a $25,000 bond. Now that her charges have been upgraded, she turned herself in yet again and has posted a $150,000 bond. Now, back in July, a medical helicopter flew Daniel from Florida to New York so he could continue his recovery at his home with his family. His mother said that he was improving and he was actually able to get out of bed to use a wheelchair for physical therapy. And because he believed the baby Leo was carrying was his, he was taking on parenting classes. Tragically, Daniel contracted pneumonia, and on October 8th, he passed away. I spoke with his Aunt Tiffany Waterman about her family's loss. He was wonderful. What I want
Starting point is 00:18:26 everyone to know is he was just starting his adulthood. He was just maturing, you know, realizing about life and what it really means. And it was beautiful to see him becoming the man he was going to be before that ended too abruptly. He was always an athlete. He was in entire life. He was so strong. He was 6.5. He was a big guy. And he was the best cousin to my children who looked up to him. He could do no wrong ever. He was definitely about family. He loved us just so deeply. It's just sad because everything was just cut way too short. What sports did he play? He played. If he tried at any sport, he was amazing. He was the best. His passion was basketball, though. Yeah, being 6'5, I think that would make him a pretty good basketball player.
Starting point is 00:19:17 Very good. You know, when this happened, take me back to when this happened. I just can't even imagine getting that call that he's been in this horrific crash. Yes. I was, I was sleeping in bed. I'm a boring, you know, mother or two, sleeping in bed. And it's a little after 2 a.m. And I got the phone call from my grandmother. And she had already spoken to my sister, his mother. And she told me about the crash. And she said it doesn't look good.
Starting point is 00:19:53 He's probably not going to make it. And it just killed me. He was in the hospital fighting for so long. And, you know, it sounded like there was hope that he could make it. And then, you know, he wakes up from this coma and, you know, he's able to communicate that this was intentional. I mean, what was the family's reaction when that happened? Um, I think we were more concentrating in like, uh, we was able to come to just watching him come to was absolutely amazing. It actually took us a little while to try to understand he was trying to tell us something.
Starting point is 00:20:35 You have to just imagine, like, put yourself there coming out of a coma. It was a kind of induced coma. And we were able to use an alphabet letterboard. And he, and we pointed to every single letter until he spelled it out. And he spelled out an entire statement. There is a baby involved in all of this. And it sounds like you guys, we were talking before we started, that your family has kind of been kept in the dark about the baby. and the birth of the baby and Daniel it seems like believed the baby was was his baby so talk to me a little about this part of that of the story okay so we have been definitely kept in the dark there hasn't been any communication between our party or the opposite party um Dana was looking forward to meeting his baby holding his baby
Starting point is 00:21:34 and raising his baby. That, I think, is what kept him going in the hospital. He would try to do exercises to and strengthen his arm and say, I'm going to be able to hold my baby. I'm going to get out of here. So it's definitely something he was looking forward to. But we have no information or details about anything. The only thing we did know when accident initial happened, she was in communication with us, and she did, you know, send some updates and sonogram pictures. And We did find out it was a girl. So that is basically the extent of our knowledge of the entire pregnancy. And the baby was born.
Starting point is 00:22:14 You know, she did give, Leah did give birth. I have no details on the birth whatsoever, but we have heard, yes, that she has had the baby. Her due date was October 10th. So that is to be expected. And we'll continue to keep an eye on this case and follow it as it moves. through the court system. And that's it for this episode of Crime Fix. I'm Ann Jeanette Levy. Thanks so much for being with me. I'll see you back here next time.
