Starting point is 00:00:52 Crime Alert, I'm Jennifer Gould. Breaking crime news now. A woman who claimed to be a sex trafficking victim has been sentenced for the murder of her alleged abuser. 24-year-old Crystal Kaiser of Milwaukee was sentenced to 11 years in prison for the 2018 killing of Randall Villar III. The 34-year-old is accused of sex trafficking and sexually abusing her when she was 17 years old. Kaiser also faces five years of extended supervision following her conviction for second-degree reckless homicide. Kaiser's plea deal, reached in May, spared her from a potential life sentence by allowing her to avoid a full trial. The case has sparked widespread debate, with advocates for sex trafficking victims arguing that Kaiser's actions were a desperate response to years of abuse.
Starting point is 00:01:48 Kaiser admitted to shooting Villar twice in the head and setting his house on fire after he allegedly raped and filmed her and other underage girls. She claimed she acted in self-defense when he assaulted her after she refused sex. Prosecutors, however, disputed the extent of Villar's involvement in trafficking, suggesting he was merely a client rather than a trafficker. They highlighted Kaiser's social media post, which included a selfie with the caption, quote, my mugshot, end quote, as evidence of her intent. Kaiser's defense invoked a 2008 Wisconsin law that provides some immunity to sex trafficking victims for crimes committed as a direct result
Starting point is 00:02:34 of their trafficking. Despite this, though, prosecutors argued that such laws were not intended to cover homicide. The case drew significant support from anti-violence groups who argued that trafficking victims sometimes feel they have no other recourse. Yasmin Vafa is the executive director with Rights for Girls and spoke to Fox 6 about the sentencing. It's a heartbreaking decision. We are still letting so many of these young girls fall through the cracks. Kaiser is scheduled for a restitution hearing on November 8th. She will serve 11 years of initial confinement with a projected release in 2033, barring any changes in her legal circumstances.
