Crime Alert, I'm Nancy Grace.
Breaking crime news now.
A mother and daughter found shot dead
in what appears to be a murder-suicide,
but investigators determine the scene is staged.
Police say Megan Hargan shot her mom and sister,
then tried to make it look like the sister pulled the trigger.
Motive? Money.
Just the day before, Hargan tried to transfer $400,000 from her mother's bank account.
Nancy, Hargan was reportedly jealous that her mother was helping her sister purchase a home
while she received no such assistance.
Mom Helen Hargan was found with a single-point-blank gunshot wound to the top of her head.
She was found in a bathroom with a.22-caliber rifle wedged between her legs. Meghan Harkin's defense attorneys say that
Helen Harkin put the gun to her own head and fired using her toes. Harkin was tried twice
as a juror in the original proceedings attempted to recreate the suicide herself and told other
jurors it was impossible. A judge deemed that recreation outside research,
and Harkin received a second trial, also resulting in a guilty verdict.
Megan Harkin handed two life sentences.
Salvatore Schifano, 66, gets a warning from a Florida cop
after trying to cross crime scene tape at a fatal Clearwater plane crash.
Then he's later caught in the scene of the plane crash,
the crime scene,
taking video on his phone. When approached by police, he identifies himself as medical staff,
but can't tell cops for whom he works. Stefano arrested, now facing charges of resisting an
officer. He apologized, all right, but then explained he was just trying to take the video
to sell it. More crime and justice news after this.
Now with the latest crime and justice breaking news, Crime Online's John Limley.
According to authorities in Hawaii, a 10-year-old girl discovered dead in her Honolulu home last
month died from years of abuse and neglect, pneumonia and starvation. With details,
here's Sydney Sumner with Crime Online.
Honolulu Police Homicide Lieutenant Dina Thomas says that the child's parents and grandmother
were taken into custody on suspicion of murder, kidnapping, unlawful imprisonment, and other
offenses. The grandmother and parents were arrested on Friday morning. It was in January
that police were called to a home in Wahiawa, just outside of Honolulu, and discovered the girl dead and appearing emaciated. The household included a total of
six children. Four of them were the parents' biological children. Thomas stated that the
couple were the girl's legal guardians and the adoptive parents of a four-year-old boy.
Thomas noted that the young boy was also emaciated and appeared to have been abused or neglected.
The lieutenant also said that the other four minors exhibited no evidence of maltreatment. Now to New York City as a 15-year-old
boy has been charged as an adult with two counts of attempted murder after it's alleged that he
shot a Brazilian tourist in the leg in Times Square and then opened fire on a police officer.
The teenager, identified by authorities as a resident of a
Manhattan migrant shelter who came to the city from Venezuela late last year, is being held
without bond after the assistant district attorney stated that he, quote, cannot be trusted to return
to court. This, according to our friends with the New York Daily News. The teen is also charged
with assault and possessing a weapon in connection with the
shooting incident that started in a sports store and spread to midtown Manhattan streets.
A man who admitted to killing four employees at a marijuana farm in Oklahoma in 2022 has been
handed a life sentence. Once again, Crime Online's Sydney Sumner. According to court documents,
47-year-old Chen Wu entered a guilty
plea to four counts of first-degree murder and one count of assault and battery with a deadly
weapon related to the murders committed on November 20, 2022. Wu, who was also listed as
Wu Chen in court documents, is accused by the prosecution of shooting and killing three men
and a woman in a garage at the property west of Hennessy, a town located roughly 55 miles
northwest of Oklahoma City. Wu received a 20-year prison sentence for the assault charge and a life
sentence without the possibility of parole for each of the murder convictions as part of a plea
deal. His sentences are to be served concurrently. Two days after the murders, Wu, 47, was apprehended
in Florida and subsequently extradited to Oklahoma. Prosecutors claimed in court documents that just before Wu shot and killed the victims,
he had sought the return of his $300,000 investment in the pot operation.
Thanks, John.
