More crime and justice news after this.
Now with the latest crime and justice breaking news, Crime Online's John Limley.
A Nevada teenager who pleaded guilty to charges including attempted murder for the assault on a female Las Vegas high school teacher more than a year ago that left her with multiple injuries has been given a sentence of 16 to 40 years in state prison.
For more, we turn to 22 to 55 years in prison.
In a plea agreement that avoided trial in connection with the after-school attack at El Dorado High School, the defendant also admitted guilt to attempted sexual assault and violence with a deadly weapon, resulting in great bodily damage.
Other charges against the teen were dismissed. Crime Online is not naming the teen because of
his age nor the teacher because of the nature of the crime. In court, the accused apologized
and expressed regret for his actions. His court-appointed attorney, Tyler Gaston,
explained to the judge that the side effects of an asthma medicine his client was taking
were to blame for his client's behavior. The drug is said to produce mood swings, night terrors, and hallucinations.
The attack in April 2022, which happened after classes had ended for the day,
caused the teacher to leave her job. She told the judge that she felt imprisoned psychologically
and physically. The death penalty may be sought in the case of a man suspected of killing five
neighbors in Texas after some of them complained that gunshots were keeping an infant awake.
The man was indicted for capital murder of multiple people. Francisco Oropesa, a 38-year-old
Mexican national who had been deported numerous times in the years prior to the attack in April
outside Houston, is a Mexican national,
and the prosecution has not yet decided whether to seek the death sentence against him. He is
already facing five counts of murder as of May. In August, Doropeza is due to appear in court.
His attorney, Anthony Oso, stated that his client will enter a not guilty plea.
A man detained earlier this month in California
has been sent back to Florida to stand trial for the murder of a woman in 1984.
Once again, Crime Online's Sydney Sumner. According to a statement from the Hillsborough
County Sheriff's Office, 65-year-old Donald Santini has been arrested and taken to a Florida
jail on a charge of first-degree murder. After Santini's arrest on June 7th,
Florida detectives flew to San Diego, at which point he was subsequently extradited to Tampa.
Santini had been evading capture since June 1984 when Florida officials secured an arrest warrant
connecting him to the strangulation death of 33-year-old Cynthia Wood from Bradenton.
Three days after Wood disappeared on June 6th of that year, her body was discovered in
a wet ditch. Santini was last spotted with Wood. According to the arrest warrant, a medical
examiner determined that Santini had strangled her and his fingerprints were discovered on her body.
Santini appeared numerous times on the TV program America's Most Wanted in 1990, 2005, and 2013.
