Renowned North Carolina horse trainer John Vic Russell gets in an argument with his son while working on the farm. Russell gets in his truck, seemingly to drive off, but instead gets a gun and starts shooting at his own son, striking the horse his son is riding. The horse, a Grand Prix jumper named Franklin's Tower, had to be euthanized due to his injuries. Russell's son's fiancée has said that he is extremely shaken by the incident, heartbroken, and concerned for his father, who has now been released on a $90,000 bail. One of Russell's lawyers, Jennifer Lobb, has urged others against rushing to judgment,
Starting point is 00:00:43 claiming health issues could have made Russell's mind foggy or that the gun could have accidentally gone off. Russell, now charged with assault with a deadly weapon and animal cruelty. A man traveling with his horse stops at a Florida hotel for the night, leaving the horse in its trailer. 3 a.m., a man riding a bike past the hotel notices the trailer and stops, breaks the lock, coaxes the horse out, and rides off on his bike with the horse in tow. Now with the latest crime and justice breaking news, Crime Online's John Limley. We begin in New York State, where a suspect has been apprehended on Long Island in connection
Starting point is 00:01:31 with the Gilgo Beach murders, a series of homicides that have remained unsolved for over a decade. With the latest, here's Sydney Sumner with Crime Online. Ever since human bones were discovered along a New York seaside highway more than 10 years ago, the story has attracted a great deal of public interest. The murders went unexplained for many years, and the mystery served as the inspiration for the 2020 Netflix film, Lost Girls. According to an official who spoke with our friends at the Associated Press, the suspect was apprehended at a home in Massapeca. The official spoke to the AP anonymously, as they were not authorized to discuss the details publicly. Investigators have long
Starting point is 00:02:08 been baffled by the deaths of 11 people whose remains were discovered in 2010 and 2011. Young female sex workers made up the majority of the victims. Several of the bodies were near the town of Gilgo Beach, about 50 miles southeast of Manhattan. An interagency task group comprised of detectives from the FBI, state, and local police departments was established last year with the intention of cracking the case. The Ohio Supreme Court has granted a three-year stay of execution for a prisoner found guilty of murdering fellow inmates during a 1993 riot. Keith Lamar was found guilty of aggravated murder in 1995 for the deaths of five prisoners at the Southern Ohio Correctional Institution in Lucasville during the uprising. Lamar was given the death penalty for four of the murders. The inmate's execution
Starting point is 00:03:00 date has now been moved by the Supreme Court from November 16, 2023 to January 13, 2027. Lamar's attorneys contend that the only evidence against the 54-year-old prisoner came from fellow convicts and that prosecution hid additional evidence of his innocence. Police in Los Angeles say that undisputed lightweight champion Devin Haney has been taken into custody on a felony firearms charge. Once again, Crime Online's Sydney Sumner. 24-year-old Haney was freed on a $35,000 bond after being charged with concealing a weapon in a moving vehicle. According to online court records, a municipal court date has been set for August 3rd. Bill Haney, the boxer's father, manager, and trainer,
Starting point is 00:03:45 told ESPN that Haney was in the back seat when police made a traffic check. The elder Haney claims that the accusation is, quote, a misunderstanding that will be solved when Devin goes to court. It's unfortunate that he was arrested with his armed license security, and I'm confident things are going to be worked out. At 135 pounds, Haney defeated Vasily Lomachenko in May by unanimous decision in Las Vegas to maintain his championships and raise his record to 3-0. Following an Associated Press investigation last year that resulted in jail sentences for a former warden and chaplain, now two former officials of a federal women's prison in California have entered pleas of guilty to several charges of sexual abuse.
Starting point is 00:04:29 The San Francisco Chronicle reports that Andrew Jones, a former culinary supervisor at the Federal Correctional Institution in Dublin, pled guilty to six felony counts of sexually abusing three of the women under his supervision. Prison call center guard Nikki Nunley entered a guilty plea to four counts of sexual abuse and five lesser offenses involving abusive sexual contact with five different women. Both admitted to lying to authorities and entered guilty pleas. Dee Warner has a family friend pick up her nine-year-old daughter for the weekend. She plans to have a discussion with husband Dale Warner about ending the marriage. The Warners get in an argument, but Dale Warner claims they reconciled later that evening and Dee fell asleep while he was giving her a back massage on the living room floor. Warner says he moved Dee to the couch before heading to bed himself.
Starting point is 00:05:20 Next morning, he leaves for work 6 30 a.m. Dee's still asleep on the couch. 9 a.m., Dee's adult daughter comes by for Sunday brunch.
