We begin in Wisconsin as a recent autopsy has ruled that the death of a black man penned to the ground by security guards outside a Milwaukee hotel is a homicide. Let's bring in Sydney Sumner of Crime Online for the latest. The man, identified as Devontae Mitchell, suffocated while being restrained on June 30th. According to the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office, Mitchell was also under the influence of cocaine and methamphetamine at the time of his death. The findings detailed that

This confirms the Medical Examiner's Office's preliminary determination that Mitchell's death was a homicide. Previously, the Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office and police investigators stated they were waiting for the full autopsy results, with the case being reviewed as a potential homicide. Assistant Medical Examiner Lauren A. Decker signed the autopsy report on July 31. It stated that Mitchell's fatal injury occurred while he was, quote, restrained in prone position by multiple individuals after drug use. The report also noted Mitchell's hypertensive
Starting point is 00:03:05 cardiovascular disease and morbid obesity as significant conditions. Mitchell stood six feet tall and weighed 301 pounds. An investigative report released by the medical examiner's office revealed that Mitchell was restrained by four individuals after being combative in the hotel lobby. According to police, he entered the Hyatt Regency Hotel, caused a disturbance, and fought with the guards as they escorted him out. Relatives and their attorneys, who reviewed hotel surveillance footage provided by the district attorney's office, described seeing Mitchell chased inside the hotel by security guards and then dragged outside where he was beaten. Civil rights attorney Ben Crump, representing Mitchell's family, stated that a bystander's video circulating on social media

Crump, representing Mitchell's family, stated that a bystander's video circulating on social media shows security guards with their knees on Mitchell's back and neck. Crump has questioned why no charges have been filed in connection with Mitchell's death. In a statement, Crump and Mitchell's family called for immediate charges against those involved based on the autopsy findings and the homicide ruling. Now to Indiana, where a man charged in a mass shooting over a stimulus check has now been sentenced after taking a plea deal. Once again, Crime Online's Sydney Sumner. That Indianapolis man has been sentenced to 145 years in prison for the fatal shootings of three adults and a seven-year-old girl following a dispute over federal COVID-19 relief money. The Marion County Prosecutor's Office says that
Starting point is 00:04:25 28-year-old Malik Halfacre pleaded guilty in June to four counts of murder and one count of attempted murder related to the attack that occurred in March 2021. The shootings took place inside an Indianapolis home where Halfacre's former girlfriend was shot and injured. The bodies of her seven-year-old daughter, her mother, her brother, and a male cousin were discovered at the scene. Authorities revealed that the argument leading up to the shooting centered around stimulus money that Halfacre's ex-girlfriend had received. After the violent act, Halfacre took the money, his girlfriend's purse, and her car, then fled the scene with their 6-month-old daughter, who was unharmed during the incident.
