Now with the latest crime and justice breaking news, Crime Online's John Limley. South Carolina prosecutors are pursuing the death penalty for James Douglas Drayton,
Starting point is 00:02:22 a 26-year-old man accused of a brutal crime that shocked the Inman community nearly two years ago. For the latest, we turn to Sydney Sumner of Crime Online. The decision, announced by the Seventh Circuit Solicitor's Office, comes as Drayton faces charges for the fatal shooting of five individuals in October of 2022. Although the Solicitor's Office has yet to comment on the rationale behind seeking capital punishment, the gravity of the charges is clear. Drayton is accused of murdering five people, including four who were found dead at the scene in a home located in Inman, roughly 13 miles northwest of Spartanburg. The victims, identified as 37-year-old Thomas Ellis Anderson, 49-year-old James Derek Baldwin, 59-year-old Mark Allen Hewitt, and 32-year-old Adam Daniel Morley, were killed in what authorities
Starting point is 00:03:01 have described as a drug-fueled rampage. A fifth victim, 19-year-old Roman Christian Miguel Rocha, succumbed to his injuries later at a hospital. The case has drawn significant attention not only for the number of victims, but for the circumstances surrounding Drayton's arrest. Spartanburg County Sheriff Chuck Wright revealed that Drayton confessed to the murder shortly after his arrest, stating that he was under the influence of methamphetamine and had not slept for four days. According to Wright, Drayton was staying at the home where the killings took place, a location known for frequent drug use. Drayton also reportedly surrendered the firearm he claimed to have used in the shootings. Following the murders, Drayton fled to Georgia, where his run from the law ended after a high-speed chase.
Starting point is 00:03:42 Deputies in Burke County, Georgia apprehended Drayton after he allegedly attempted to rob a convenience store at gunpoint and kidnap an employee. At the time of his arrest, Drayton was driving a vehicle taken from the Inman crime scene, this according to authorities. While no trial date has been set, the decision to seek the death penalty places this case within the broader context of South Carolina's capital punishment policies. The state, which has not conducted an execution since 2011, recently sought Supreme Court uphold the use of the firing squad, lethal injection, or the electric chair as methods of execution. This ruling has reignited the debate over the death penalty in South Carolina, making the outcome of Drayton's case one that will be closely watched. Thanks, John. Gordon White,
