Now with the latest crime and justice breaking news, Crime Online's John Limley. We begin overseas as Russian President Vladimir Putin says hand grenade fragments were discovered in the bodies of those who perished in the plane crash that killed mercenary leader Yevgeny Prigozhin on August 23rd. For more, here's Sidney Sumner with Crime Online. Putin claims that no evidence of a, quote, external impact on the private jet was discovered by investigators.
Starting point is 00:02:02 Ten individuals were killed when a flight that was traveling from Moscow to St. Petersburg crashed, including Prigozhin and two of his senior lieutenants from the Wagner private military contractor. Putin's assertion could not be independently verified. U.S. intelligence agencies first determined that the accident was caused by an intentional explosion, and Western officials have cited a long list of Putin rivals who have been murdered. The Kremlin referred to claims that he was responsible for the accident as an absolute lie. The results of a Russian probe have not been made public. Brazil, where the Embraer business jet was made, offered to join the investigation, but Moscow declined. Putin did not directly address the cause of the tragedy, stating only that the investigation was still ongoing, but his remarks seemed to imply that a grenade explosion took the
Starting point is 00:02:50 plane down. The biggest significant threat to Putin, who has been in power for more than 20 years, came from Prigozhin's spoiled uprising in June. The crash occurred exactly two months to the day after the insurrection began. Back in this country now, as Wisconsin authorities say, a man who illegally entered the state capitol with a loaded handgun and demanded to meet Governor Tony Evers later returned at night with an assault weapon after posting bail. According to Tatiana Warwick, a spokeswoman for the State Department of Administration, the suspect approached the governor's office on the first floor of the Capitol at 2 p.m. Wednesday, wearing no shirt and carrying a holstered revolver. A message from Capitol Police distributed to legislators and their staff stated that the 43-year-old man
Starting point is 00:03:36 threatened to stay until he saw Governor Evers to discuss, quote, domestic abuse toward men and would not leave until he saw the governor. According to Warwick, Evers wasn't in the building at the time. Researchers at Boston Children's Hospital have found that during the previous 10 years, the number of children killed by firearms has increased by 87 percent. Once again, Crime Online's Sydney Sumner. Data on fatal and non-fatal shooting injuries from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Injury Reporting System in Atlanta were evaluated by researchers who discovered that the rate of fatal wounds climbed from almost 14 deaths per 100,000
Starting point is 00:04:16 children in 2011 to more than 17 deaths per 100,000 in 2021. According to a report published in the medical journal Pediatrics, 2,590 children died from gunshot injuries in 2021 as opposed to 1,311 in 2011. Over half of all non-fatal injuries fell during the same time frame, with motor vehicle injuries falling by 47 percent. In order to make a more precise prediction of the overall trends in pediatric injuries and aid in the development of preventative measures, the study examined patterns in both fatal and non-fatal injury among children. The report comes at a time when there have been increasing calls for stricter gun control in the U.S., particularly from political progressives.
