Acquaintances Siobhan Tyler and Lauren Martin get in an argument at a friend's party. Their friends break it up and the women seem to go their separate ways, but Lauren follows Tyler home to continue the argument, live streaming the encounter on Facebook. When Tyler arms herself with a baseball bat and a nine millimeter, Lauren tries to go back to her car, but Tyler shoots multiple times.
Starting point is 00:00:33 Paramedics rush Lauren Martin to the hospital with several gunshot wounds. She dies of her injuries. Nancy, the argument between Tyler and Martin, a photographer, apparently stemmed from photos Martin took of Tyler. Tyler's girlfriend, Lakevia Pringle, has also been charged in Martin's death as she also live-streamed the attack. While the video is unclear because it was so dark outside, the audio is pristine, and Pringle is heard encouraging Tyler to shoot Martin just before a gunshot rings out. Savon Tyler, 34, charged with murder. Ronald Spiker stumbles on an unlocked trailer and can't stop himself to its contents. He decides he can't live without an old box TV he finds inside. He loads it on a golf cart also stored in the trailer, planning to use the golf
Starting point is 00:01:20 cart as a getaway vehicle. The trailer's owner spots Spiker backing the golf cart out and calls 911. Florida cops, on foot I might add, chase down Spiker who unsuccessfully tries to navigate a wooded area in a golf cart. Cops find a baggie of meth in Spiker's pocket. Ronald Spiker, 60, believe it or not, old enough to know better, facing burglary, theft, and drug charges. Ah, the perils of making a getaway in a golf cart. More crime and justice news after this. Now with the latest crime and justice breaking news, Crime Online's John Limley. In a high-profile case that sparked national debate on immigration, Jose Ibarra, accused in the February killing of Georgia
Starting point is 00:02:11 nursing student Lakenhope Riley, has waived his right to a jury trial. Instead, his fate will be decided by a judge in Athens-Clarke County, Georgia. Prosecutors allege Ibarra, a Venezuelan national, attacked Riley, a 22-year-old nursing student at Augusta University, as she was jogging on the University of Georgia campus. Ibarra faces a 10-count indictment, including charges of malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, and kidnapping. The court alleges he struck and asphyxiated Riley with evidence suggesting he intended to sexually assault her. Prosecutors who are not seeking the death penalty aim for a sentence of life without parole.
Starting point is 00:02:56 After a waiver signed by Ibarra was presented, Superior Court Judge H. Patrick Haggard ruled the waiver was made voluntarily. Jury selection was set for last week, but with the waiver, the trial has proceeded as a bench trial. Ibarra, who entered the U.S. illegally in 2022, was arrested the day after Riley's body was found. The case quickly became a focal point for immigration policy debate, with prominent figures including President Biden referencing Riley's tragic death amid calls for stronger border security. In New Hampshire, a judge has slashed a landmark $38 million abuse verdict against the state down to just $475,000. Here's Crime Online's Sydney Sumner with more.
Starting point is 00:03:45 Rockingham County Superior Court Judge Andrew Shulman acknowledged the decision was difficult, calling it a miscarriage of justice, but agreed to cap the award to comply with state law, which limits claims against the state to $475,000 per incident. The plaintiff, David Meehan, alleged years of sexual and physical abuse at the former Youth Development Center in Manchester during the 1990s, sparking a sweeping criminal investigation. While a jury sided with Meehan in May, confusion arose over how much could be awarded, with jurors marking one on the verdict form, possibly misunderstanding the cap's application. The state interpreted this as liability for a single incident, despite Meehan's claims of over 100 episodes of abuse. So far, the judge has denied Meehan's request for a retrial to clarify the number of incidents, though a full retrial remains a possibility.
Starting point is 00:04:35 Meehan's case is among over 1,100 filed against the state following his 2017 police report with 11 former employees facing criminal charges. Only one criminal case has reached trial, resulting in a mistrial in September. Yet another case involving Bradley Asbury, accused of aiding in an assault, is scheduled for trial this week.
