Starting point is 00:00:00 Crime Alert, hourly update, breaking crime news now. I'm Jackie Howard. The trial for a Texas man accused of murdering a Houston couple and their six-year-old daughter got underway with a surprise. Do you still wish to proceed in pleading guilty to this jury? Yes, sir. Fine. Xavier Davis, 32, entered a guilty plea to capital murder charges in the deaths of Gregory Carhey, 35, Donyevia Langway, 29, and the couple's six-year-old daughter, Harmony. Police say Davis forced his way into the family's apartment, shooting the couple in front of three of their children. Six-year-old Harmony was shot in the head. Her older sister,
Starting point is 00:00:39 10, shot in the arm, pretended to be dead, listening as the killer FaceTimed an accomplice. After Davis left the home, the surviving daughter locked the door and began calling family members for help while trying to protect and comfort her baby brother. That child was the only person. That child was the one person Davis did not shoot, say police. Another eight-year-old boy was not home at the time. Harris County DA Sean Thierry praised the 10-year-old's actions. It's amazing and what she did to get help. I don't think that there are many adults out here that could have done what she did and then to have you know the the mental capacity to call her parents to call her grandparents and her uncle to get help there for herself and her little brother. It's amazing. And what she did probably helped save her little brother's life.
Starting point is 00:01:32 Police charged Davis with three counts of capital murder and a single count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. But by that point, he was already in custody for an unrelated case. Police were led to their suspect by a matchbook. It takes a $1 bill. He puts the rest of the cash in his pocket, and he hands that to the clerk. He's now bought his matches. The matches that are going to show up at that field
Starting point is 00:01:58 in parallel next to the car that he stole so he could drive it to the Toro Place apartments. The police investigation also led to the arrest of a second suspect, whom police allege ordered the murders. A woman who had dated Lagway, who had just learned she was pregnant with her fifth child. Alexis Williams also charged with three counts of capital murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Williams and Davis had been friends
Starting point is 00:02:25 since they were children. Williams reportedly told Davis that he could rob the family home and take what he wanted if he would just carry out the killings. She has pled not guilty to all charges. Investigators say they connected Williams to the shooting through FaceTime and phone calls showing Williams did not want to be there in person, but did want to see the aftermath. More crime and justice news after this. I'm Nicole Parton. Just over a month ahead of Sean Diddy Combs' upcoming criminal trial, the hip-hop mogul is facing new allegations of sexual assault in a civil lawsuit again.
Starting point is 00:03:07 An unnamed individual from Southern California referred to as John Doe has accused Combs of sexual assault that allegedly occurred on the set of a commercial between 2022 and 2023, according to a complaint filed in the New York County Supreme Court. This report was reviewed by the USA Today, who reported it first. Doe, who identifies as a photographer production assistant, claims he initiated a conversation with Combs while they were working on a, quote, high-profile commercial. According to the allegations, after Combs invited Doe to his trailer, he reportedly demanded oral sex from the man in exchange for promises of career advancement, calling the alleged incident a blatant sexual quid pro quo. The lawsuit states Combs presented his interaction as a pivotal opportunity for Doe's career.
Starting point is 00:04:01 Despite his reservations, Doe felt compelled to seize what seemed to be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. It further suggests that if Doe didn't not satisfy Combs' demands, his career would suffer. Doe, who does not recall the specifics of why Combs was present at the scene, claims he is a victim of sexual battery and is seeking a jury trial. Combs' legal representatives issued a statement reaffirming his innocence, saying, No matter how many lawsuits are filed, especially by those unwilling to disclose their names and identities, it does not alter the fact that Mr. Combs has never sexually assaulted or trafficked anyone, regardless of gender or age. They added, We exist in a society where anyone can file a lawsuit for any reason.
Starting point is 00:04:49 Thankfully, there is a fair judicial system to uncover the truth, and Mr. Combs is confident he will be vindicated in court. Notably, Texas Attorney Tony Doesby, who is representing Doe, stated, quote, we have diligently pursued this litigation to ensure the voices of these alleged victims are acknowledged. I'm Jennifer Gould. The arc of LaShawn Eugene Johnson's life has taken a shocking turn, plummeting from the heights of NFL stardom to the depths of federal criminal charges. The former running back, 54, stands accused of operating a massive dog fighting ring. The FBI's investigation culminating in the seizure of 190 pit bulls
Starting point is 00:05:34 from his Oklahoma properties, a record breaking confiscation. This indictment reveals a calculated operation, a stark contrast to his celebrated athletic career, and a chilling echo of his prior animal cruelty conviction. Here's Kevin Chambers, State Director of Animal Wellness Action, talking to Tulsa 6 News. The punishment needs to be strong. The public has asked for that. They have made it a felony for that reason. Federal prosecutors allege Johnson, under the moniker Malkant Kennels, ran a sophisticated dog fighting enterprise across Broken Arrow and Haskell. He reportedly bred and sold champion fighting dogs,
Starting point is 00:06:19 some bearing names like War Pony and Boot Stomper, boasting about their brutal fighting records. One dog, Hog, reportedly achieved eight victories, evidence of the operation's alleged efficiency and brutality. The October 2024 FBI raid, resulting in the largest single-person seizure of fighting dogs in U.S. history exposed the scale of Johnson's alleged crimes. Authorities claim his trafficking fueled the illegal dogfighting industry, subjecting countless animals to unspeakable cruelty. The seized pit bulls are now under the care of animal welfare organizations. And again, this is not Johnson's first encounter with dog fighting allegations.
Starting point is 00:07:07 In 2004, he pleaded guilty to state-level animal fighting charges for operating crazy side kennels, resulting in a deferred sentence. That prior investigation yielded the seizure of over 80 pit bulls from his Tulsa residence. The federal charges Johnson now faces carry significantly harsher penalties. Each of the 21 counts carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine potentially resulting in decades behind bars. Johnson, a former third
Starting point is 00:07:41 round draft pick who played for the Green Bay Packers, Arizona Cardinals, and New York Giants, once enjoyed a successful NFL career. His resilience, particularly after battling lymphoma, was celebrated, but these allegations have severely tarnished his legacy. Johnson pleaded not guilty at his arraignment and is scheduled for trial on May 5th. He is currently prohibited from owning pitfalls. I'm Drew Nelson, a young man in California who's at the center of public outrage after police officers tased and beat him while he was suffering from a seizure behind the wheel. The disrespect of the violent way he was treated and acknowledging that he had the seizure. A citizen speaking at a town hall where police chief Joseph Vasquez acknowledged their failures.
Starting point is 00:08:32 That trust has been fractured, and we need to build to get that trust back. Jack Bruce, age 22, was driving home in Hercules April 1st last year after visiting his grandmother. He suffered his first ever tonic-clonic seizure while driving. His car slowed, rolled off the road, and came to a stop against some trees. He was uninjured but unconscious. A bystander turned off the ignition and took his keys. Another called 911 and reported that Bruce appeared to be having a seizure. That information was passed on to police and paramedics. Three Hercules officers responded, Angel Garcia, Michael Thompson, and Joshua Goldstein.
Starting point is 00:09:12 According to the lawsuit Bruce filed in February, all three were aware he was likely having a seizure. Body camera footage shows the officers first observing Bruce as incoherent and barely responsive. At one point, Officer Goldstein told another officer, quote, don't move him, he's having a seizure, just let him be. But minutes later, their approach changed. Officer Garcia began poking and shaking Bruce.
Starting point is 00:09:35 Firefighter paramedic Daniel Collier arrived and asked Bruce if he had any medical conditions like seizures. As he never had seizures before, he said no, but appeared confused and oriented. Let's go. Let's get out of the car. You're going to get tased. We want to help you, but do not fight us. You will get ripped out of this car. We're not playing you. He's conscious breathing. Looks like he's having a seizure. Doesn't smell like alcohol or anything like that. I don't see any drugs. After using the taser, officers pulled Bruce out, grabbing his limbs and hair. Garcia tased him twice more.
Starting point is 00:10:08 Bruce, screaming in pain. This is an iHeart podcast.
