Saturday was a milestone day of community, fireworks, and shared celebration as our nation marked its 250th birthday.
But across the United States, Independence Day was once again marred by gun violence.
From backyard family barbecues to crowded public beaches, the sounds of celebrating.
celebration were violently replaced by the ring of gunfire in multiple states. We're looking at a
double shooting weekend in Brooklyn, New York, chaos on the coast in Hilton Head, South Carolina,
a disrupted celebration in Pensacola, Florida, and a neighborhood block party turned crime
scene in Mount Clemens, Michigan. Beginning in New York City, the holiday weekend saw two
distinct troubling shootings unfold in the borough of Brooklyn. The most devastating incident
occurred late Saturday night in the iconic Coney Island neighborhood.
In a residential courtyard on West 30th Street,
a family gathered together for a late night 4th of July barbecue.
According to NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch,
at approximately 10.35 p.m., an unknown male dressed entirely in black
in wearing a black ski mask open fire directly into the courtyard,
discharging at least 10 rounds from a pistol equipped with an extended magazine
before fleeing the scene on foot.
The toll is staggering.
Eight people were shot.
Tragically, four of the victims are children.
Young boys aged 14, 12, 7, and 6.
The six-year-old was struck in the abdomen,
while the other young boys suffered wounds to their legs and thighs.
Alongside them, two men and two women were hit.
Seven of the victims are currently listed in stable condition,
but a 21-year-old woman remains in critical condition
after being shot in the chest.
Police are actively investigating if there is a connection to a gang-related homicide
that happened on the exact same block last week.
New York Mayor Zoran Mamdani condemned the attack, stating there is no place in our city for this kind of violence.
No arrests have yet been made.
Just hours after the Coney Island shooting, in the early morning hours of Sunday,
violence struck the Crown Heights neighborhood.
This time, it appeared to be a targeted ambush on law enforcement.
An NYPD officer assigned to a July 4th violence reduction deployment spotted a man carrying a firearm on surveillance video shortly after 4 a.m.
As the suspect closed in on an unmarked police vehicle, officers attempted to engage with him, but the suspect shot directly at the car, hitting Detective Robert Carroll directly in his ballistic vest.
Fortunately, the vest did its job, and Carol escaped with only minor bruising.
A second officer suffered minor injuries to his face and shoulder.
instantly returned fire, but the suspect was not hit. Following a short foot chase, the 18-year-old
suspect was subdued and arrested. Officers recovered a 9-millimeter handgun. Two shootings in one
burrow, one shattering a family barbecue, the other targeting the police. More crime and justice
news after this. Listen, and you're there for heart-wrenching knockouts.

Moving down the east coast to South Carolina,
a holiday beach getaway turned into absolute chaos on Hilton Head Island.
Around 8.20 p.m. on Saturday, Caligney Beach, a popular public access area, suddenly turned into a chaotic active shooter scene.
What started as a physical fight between two groups of young men quickly escalated on the sand.
Weapons were drawn and shots were fired directly into the crowd, leaving seven people recovering from gunshot wounds.
Fortunately, authorities report no fatalities, but the gunfire sent hundreds of beachgoers sprinting for cover in the dark.
Local law enforcement moved remarkably fast. The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office announced Sunday morning that they arrested four teenagers in connection with the shooting, heavily utilizing local surveillance footage and flock safety technology to track them down. Jaden Haas, 18, is charged with attempted murder, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, an aggravated breach of peace.
17-year-old's Marcello Royal and Quasier Davis both face identical attempted murder in weapons charges and fellow 17-year-old.
year old Christopher Capers is charged as an accessory after the fact. Hilton head mayor Alan Perry
released a statement to reassure shaken residents and visitors, emphasizing that while this reckless
incident does not define the island, the town will address it with total resolve. Meanwhile,
down in the Florida panhandle, Pensacola was also added to the list of cities forced to confront
holiday gun violence. Around 120 a.m., gunfire erupted near the intersection of Palafox and Intendencia streets.
was heavily crowded with people out celebrating the 4th of July weekend when the shots ring out.
A 19-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene. Six other people, their ages ranging from just
16 to 26 years old, were injured in the hail of bullets. Pensacola Police Chief Winstrom says the
six surviving victims are all currently hospitalized, but they are thankfully expected to survive
their injuries. At this hour, no arrests have been made, and the search for suspects is ongoing.
The final fourth shooting took place in the Midwest, specifically Mount Clemens, Michigan, just outside of Detroit.
Just past 11 p.m. Saturday, McComb County deputies responded to frantic 911 calls regarding a shooting at a neighborhood block party near court and Clemens streets.
Deputies arrived to find a bloody scene. Five people had been shot. Much like the tragedy in Coney Island, the victims here included youth.
Officials have confirmed that three adults and two juveniles suffered apparent gunshot wounds.
All five were rushed to area hospitals. Police have not yet released the identities or current
conditions of the victims, and the search for suspects and emotive remains highly active.
Local authorities are pleading with anyone who attended the block party or has smartphone
video footage to step forward immediately. Five shootings from the beaches of South Carolina and Florida
to the residential streets of Brooklyn and Michigan. In total, dozens of Americans,
including at least six children, spent the day after Independence Day in hospital beds instead
of enjoying the rest of their summer weekend. It is a stark, repetitive reminder of the underlying
crisis of gun violence that continues to shape public spaces in America, even on the days meant to unite us.
