Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed human. Crime alert, hourly update. Breaking Crime News now. I'm Sidney. 19-year-old Carmelo Anthony is now being housed in strict isolation, entirely separated from the general inmate population at the Conn County Jail. This major development comes immediately following his conviction
Starting point is 00:00:22 in subsequent 35-year prison sentencing on Tuesday for the brutal murder of 17-year-old Austin Metcalfe. A representative for the Collin County Sheriff's Office detention facility confirmed that Anthony is indeed separated from the general population, stating explicitly that jailers are focused on ensuring the safety and security of all inmates. However, the representative declined to comment on the specific underlying reasons why Anthony requires isolated housing at this time. He will ultimately be transferred to a Texas state prison to serve out his multi-decade sentence, though officials have not yet provided an exact timeline for that transfer from County Lockup. A jury in McKinney, Texas, required just three hours of deliberation to return a guilty verdict. The tragedy unfolded in April of 2025 when Anthony walked into a rival high school's tent during a track meet, sparking an altercation that culminated in the fatal stabbing of Metcalf. Collin County Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Elizabeth Ventura provided emotional and graphic testimony
Starting point is 00:01:21 during the trial describing how the sheer force of the knife attack left a large gaping wound that directly pierced Metcalf's heart. Anthony's defense team argued that the teenager acted in self-defense during the altercation. However, prosecutors shattered that narrative by highlighting that the victim, Austin Metcalf, was completely unarmed, while Anthony brought a knife into the confrontation. Although Anthony was only 17 years old at the time of the killing, Texas law permitted prosecutors to try him as an adult. Though Judge Roach allowed the jury the option to consider a lesser charge of manslaughter,
Starting point is 00:01:54 which would have capped the sentence at 20 years, The jury rejected it, aligning with the prosecution's pursuit of a full murder conviction. His youth did protect him from facing the death penalty under the law, but prosecutors pushed hard for a severe sentence. Following the sentencing, Collin County District Attorney Greg Willis held a press conference to express gratitude toward the community, specifically praising the young people who stepped forward to testify. We thank all the parents and their brave kids who did the right thing. despite the trauma of witnessing the senseless murder at a school track meet, they cooperated fully and testified truthfully. Their courage was essential to securing justice in this case.
Starting point is 00:02:35 District Attorney Willis made it clear that without the immense bravery of those student witnesses, securing a murder conviction would have been an uphill battle. He extended his thoughts to the victim's family before delivering a stark warning to anyone bringing violence into local schools. This verdict sends a clear message. Violence like this won't be tolerated in our Collin County community. And we remain committed to protecting our schools and standing with victims and their families. Following those powerful statements from the prosecution, Anthony awaits his permanent prison assignment in total isolation. More crime and justice news after this.

On Saturday, June 6th, William Billy Schmidt was returning home at around 1.30 a.m. after watching the NBA finals with his friends at a local bar. As he walked along the 1900 block of D'erfor Street, he was targeted by thieves. Surveillance footage obtained from a neighbor shows Billy walking toward a man and demanding, give me back my phone. Moments later, another individual walking just ahead of Billy turns around, draws a weapon, and fires a single fatal shot into his
Starting point is 00:04:19 chest. Billy's father, Bill Schmidt, spoke out to Fox 59 about the devastating sequence of events. I'm still just shocked that this happened. He was chasing a kid who took the phone, and another kid came around and shot him. Billy was a dedicated student studying digital journalism and media communications at Penn State University, and he was on track to graduate this coming December. In a statement, Penn State expressed their deep sorrow, writing, we are heartbroken this morning to learn the tragic death of William Schmidt, and we share our deepest condolences with his family and friends. The Philadelphia Police Department is actively searching for the suspects involved in the theft and shooting, but no arrests have been made. Billy's father expressed shock
Starting point is 00:05:04 that his son attempted to pursue the thieves, noting that Billy was typically an easygoing young man. Billy's sister, Anna Schmidt, broke down in tears while speaking to Fox 59, pleading for answers. I miss him so much I don't understand how someone could do this to me and my family. And I think he's just going to walk into the door. I want justice for him, for my family. The authorities are urging anyone with information regarding this senseless act of violence or the identities of the suspects to contact the Philadelphia Police Department immediately at 215-686 tips. New Hampshire Supreme Court has overturned the murder conviction of Adam Montgomery,
Starting point is 00:05:51 previously found guilty of brutally beating his five-year-old daughter Harmony to death in 2019 and then hiding her remains, which have tragically never been found. Montgomery's conviction on the second-degree murder charge now vacated due to illegal technicality, the Supreme Court said, resulted in an unfair trial. The High Court ruled that prosecutors should not have tried Montgomery's second-degree murder charge alongside an earlier separate second-degree assault charge from months prior. The justices argued that hearing evidence of the first beating improperly led the jury to assume he must have committed the fatal December assault, creating an impermissible inference.
Starting point is 00:06:29 The ruling read that the state produced much stronger evidence that Montgomery committed the first July 2019 beating with four witnesses who claimed they noticed harmony with a black guy. Several of those witnesses also testified when confronted about that bruise, Montgomery admitted to striking the little girl. The evidence in the allegedly fatal December beating was weaker. Only Kayla Montgomery, Adam's wife at the time, who was offered a deal in exchange for her testimony, witnessed the assault. She said that Montgomery beat Harmony in the head for soiling her bed in her sleep, saying immediately afterward of the attack, I think I really heard her this time. The defense attacked Kayla Montgomery's credibility and
Starting point is 00:07:09 argued she was truly responsible for Harmony's death. The backlash of the vacated conviction was immediate. The adoptive parents of Harmony's younger brother released a searing statement saying, we are absolutely disgusted. The reality is, more protection is in place for this monster than Harmony ever received. But before there's panic, Montgomery is not walking free. The court upheld all of his other convictions, including abuse of a corpse and tampering with evidence. His 43 and a year sentence for those charges stands completely unaffected. Furthermore, the New Hampshire Attorney General's office has already confirmed they are absolutely pursuing a retrial for the murder charge, stating they remain entirely confident in the facts of the case. Chilling new details are
Starting point is 00:07:56 emerging from the tragic November 2025 murder of 18-year-old high school senior Anna Kepner aboard a carnival cruise ship. Federal court transcripts have just revealed exactly how FBI agents zeroed in on the prime suspect, Anna's own 16-year-old stepbrother, Timothy Hudson. According to testimony from FBI agent Andrew Deval, the biggest break in the case came from a device Anna's family said she was never without, her cell phone. Hudson allegedly tried to destroy the phone, smashing the screen and dumping it in a trash can on the opposite side of the ship, but he couldn't destroy the digital trail. A crew member found the battered phone and turned it into the ships lost and found. Despite the heavy damage, the FBI managed to download its contents, giving them a digital map of the cover-up.
Starting point is 00:08:41 By tracking the phone as it pinged off four different ship routers over 20 minutes, the morning after Anna's death, agents cross-referenced the locations with ship surveillance cameras. The footage placed Timothy in all four spots. He was even caught on camera standing by that exact trash can for 22 seconds before returning to his room. Adding a haunting detail to the timeline is Anna's missing Apple Watch. While the watch, it's safe. was never recovered, agents determined it stopped recording her vitals between 7.50 and 10 p.m. the night before the phone was dumped. Timothy Hudson has been indicted by a grand jury and due to the severity of the crimes will be charged as an adult. He faces charges of murder and aggravated
Starting point is 00:09:23 sexual abuse, carrying the possibility of two life sentences. Despite prosecutors pushing for him to be remanded into custody, a judge recently ruled that Hudson will remain in the care of his maternal uncle as he awaits trial. A terrifying scene unfolded in the heart of New York City as a violent attack left multiple people wounded. A suspect is currently in police custody following a mass stabbing incident near the heavily crowded Penn Station on Sunday evening. The violent encounter has left at least one person fighting serious injuries and sent several others to local emergency rooms, sparking panic in one of the busiest transportation hubs in the United States. According to official reports from the Fire Department of New York, emergency medical crews rushed to the intersection of
Starting point is 00:10:07 West 33rd Street and 7th Avenue just after 7 p.m. Sunday following several frantic calls for help. First responders arrived at the scene to discover multiple victims suffering from varying degrees of stab wounds. The FDNY has confirmed that a total of six civilians sustained injuries during the knife attack. While five victims suffered minor to moderate injuries, one individual suffered major serious injuries. Emergency vehicles transported five of the injured to Bellevue Hospital, including the most seriously injured victim. The sixth was transported separately to New York Presbyterian for evaluation and treatment. Law enforcement quickly moved to secure the area and track down the perpetrator. The Amtrak Police Department, which is officially leading the
Starting point is 00:10:52 investigation, announced that a suspect was successfully apprehended and taken into police custody. At this hour, the specific circumstances that led up to the multi-person staffing remain entirely unclear. Authorities have not yet released the identity of the suspect in custody, nor have they provided any official details regarding a potential motive behind the sudden attack. This act of violence occurred during an incredibly busy and high-profile period for New York City's vast transportation network. Penn Station was experiencing massive crowds moving through its corridors on Sunday, driven in large part by sports fans as the New York Knicks continue their highly anticipated NBA finals run. Additionally, the city has been experiencing a massive influx of international and domestic visitors
Starting point is 00:11:36 arriving in the region ahead of major scheduled FIFA World Cup events, making security at the transit hub a paramount concern for local officials.
